5-0 out of 5 stars The best rpg of all time
This game has so many items (over 11000)! the graphics are really good for the time period it was made. the story is easy to understand. there are many characters to unlock while you travell around two vast worlds! you can always choose your battle type which makes this game more fun. there are three battle types full control no control and semi-control. these make the battles suit the person playing the game. once you start playing you wont want to stop thats a guarantee!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
I love Final Fantasy, it has everything other games have, story and gameplay, but something on it wan't right, battles. Star Ocean, surpasses in every way, the conection of the story with Earth and not only imaginary world. Thect that humans have such an impact in the universe, the detail of the UP3. I'm not that far yet, still going to Aquios, but DAMN. its awesome, easier to control your health, of course if u use certain special moves u lose HP, but only makes an impact in the beginning while ur still weak. His character in the beginning seems kind a retarded but i'm starting to see a change, into a more competitive, no-rule-stuck up guy. I approve it, manufacturing, real battles, MAZES, HUGE... not like Final Fantasy that all u have to do is follow the trail... BUY, u wont regret it,
sorry this is for the new one...

4-0 out of 5 stars An RPG with something that many lack...
All gamers have had the experence of playing a game (be it an RPG or anything else) they felt had its fair share of flaws, but has that one, very bright redeeming quality that makes all those flaws take a backseat to that one positive.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is one of those games. Star Ocean's appeal (at least in my case) can be summed up in a single word: combat. Star Ocean's combat system is probably the game's most notable feature. The real-time battle system, which has a very arcade-like feel to it, is a very enjoyable change than your standard-fair RPG battles. It's just so much fun to destory enemies with a volley a special attacks from you and your allies. The skill system is also a plus as well, increasing characters stats and developing other usefull, non combat skills.

Unfortunately, the rest of Star Ocean's elements aren't quite up to par when compared to the hustle and bustle of battle. Graphically, Star Ocean is behind the times no matter where you turn (excluding the FMV's). Actually, the game's graphic engine is very simular to a 1998 Square-Enix title, the often overlooked and bashed-to-no-end SaGa Frontier (one of my favorites - yes, I'm serious). The fact the game uses most of the same graphical tricks empolyed by a game two years earlier underlines this fact.

Storywise, Star Ocean 2 suffers another, slightly smaller blow. While the story is generally good, it seems to drag on until you reach the second disc, where you do more exploring and fighting and the story begins to unfold more. Characters aren't as developed as well in Star Ocean compared to other RPG's such as Final Fantasy or Wild Arms, though the game tries to make a very obvious effort to do this though the use of the private actions system (where you enter a location and your characters split up and you can talk to them on a one-on-one basis to discover more about them - this affects the outcome of the game in various ways). I will give the developers credit for trying though.

Musically, Star Ocean 2 has it's ups and downs. Some of the tunes can be quite annoying, but no game score is without it's duds. However, when you hear the battle themes played near the end of the game for the final bosses, which mainly are of heavy rock/metal variety, all is foregiven. Soundwise, the characters various soundbites during battle are cute at first, but become annoying really quickly (how many times can you remember Claude saying "that's around 50 points" after a battle - too many to admit when I'm sober).

Even with it's flaws, Star Ocean: The Second Story is an above average RPG. While I'm not sure if I would call it a "classic",I would recommend it to anyone who had the time or showed interest in the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most musical game ever...
Rhapsody is one of the best games Iplayed EVER!!There might have been some minor flaws, but thats it.The background music might not be so good, but who CARES? Once you get playing the game, that shouldn't bother you too much.
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure doesn't take long to complete.Despite that, it totally rocks! There are some really interesting puppets to befriend. When you do, they'll have mini-tasks for you to complete. You have the choice to do that or not.
The illustrations are really great.Personally, my favorite parts of the game are the illustrations and the songs.. ^_^

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!

Here, the adventure begins. Tales of Destiny II is a real-time action RPG that takes place within two massive worlds. Its engaging storyline presents a huge cast of characters, each with distinct personalities and abilities. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great game!!!!
I didn't think it was all that great at first because of the poor english voice actings, but once you really get into the game, it's no problem at all! The small faults wouldn't affect th game-play too deeply, and after all, fortunately, the voice acting gets better as you advance in the game. The voices do match the characters well, although.

Anyways, like I said, don't let the voices get to you, after all, it's an honest to goodness, excellent game!!! It's one of the most memorial ones I've played, even though I've been through many rpgs. Once you've completed the game, it'll have you thinking, "Why does it have to end!" Lol.

The main plot is quite alright, although it wasn't one of the strong points of this game. The character developement and the events that take place within the whole main plot makes up for it big time though. Although to repeat again, the main plot isn't that bad anyways.

The little morals and dialogues in the game are so touching. One of the strong points of this game.I found myself trying to stop tears when Meredy questions Reid what good memories really are. This game also brings a good point to discrimination.

The characters are simply brilliant. You get to really understand them and they're great. The character developement is great. In fact, this was what motivated me to write this review even though I'm not that sort of person, really. You'd think a 15 year old would have better things to do. But I thought I really should to put in my compliments for this game. And yeah, the characters are simply lovable.

The battle system is excellent. This game really sticks out from the rest of the rpgs how getting into battles can be also fun too, not like the others how you'd wish you could run away from all the annoying, boring battles. The voices in the battles aren't that bad, in fact, with the full awesome animation of swordsman techniques and spell casting for each character, simply excellent. The awesome battle music gets you going too.

The graphics of this game was pretty satisfactory I guess. Even though it's 2-d, it's still beautiful. I don't get what people were complaining about. After all, animes are 2-d. the backrounds have a nice, crisp look to it in my opinion.

The music wasn't that bad either. Even though the tunes weren't THAT catchy, it still has depth and feeling in it. It also has mood in it. I should know, I love music. Like Reid's hometown music, it has a homey, gentle feel to it. Oh yeah, and the battle music. Awesome. But not to be biased, I've played other rpgs too, and yeah, theirs isn't bad either. Still, the battle music for this game is GOOD.

Oh yeah, and not to forget about the mini games. They are fun. The game developers sure know what fun is. I've found myself playing Meredy's dancing thing over and over, trying to continously beat my own record. Lol.

The anime intro in this game was so cool!! It looks great. You should see it.

Anyways, I think I'm done. Ps. A very memorial game. I recommend it. Even for rpg haters. The battles system is so much better!

Editorial Review

Each installment of the Final Fantasy series has featured strongstorytelling, characterization, and strategic combat, fun minigames, and hoursupon hours of captivating gameplay. The 10th title in the series is noexception. This is the first time a Final Fantasy game has appeared on thePlayStation2, and it takes full advantage of the increased technicalcapabilities.

The story this time concerns Tidus, a blond-haired star of a sport calledBlitzball. While he is playing in a match, Tidus's city is attacked by an evilforce called Sin, and everything is destroyed save Tidus and his guardian Auran. The adventure begins as the pair are somehow transported to another world. Fromhere on, it's standard Final Fantasy gameplay: fight battles, manage experiencepoints, learn new powers, and recruit a motley crew of nonplayer characters tojoin your quest.

The graphics, however, take things to a new level. They are amazing not only fortheir realism, but also for their imaginative art design. The world these heroesinhabit is breathtakingly beautiful, flowing, and full of inventive surprises. You haven't lived until you've surfed cables high in the air, or ridden agraceful airship through the clouds. The stunning effects are on display whenyou use magic in combat, summon gigantic monsters, and use fire columns todevastate your foes.

One new element is voice acting. The innovation yields predictably mixedresults: it's wonderful to hear spoken dialogue rather than read subtitles, butas with most games translated from Japanese, the acting is mediocre andsometimes unintentionally hilarious.

Still, the game's new graphics engine and solid gameplay are sure to please fansof the series waiting to see what Square has in store for them. While FinalFantasy X doesn't offer much innovation, it also doesn't disappoint. Andfortunately, with Final Fantasy XI already in development, the title isstill a misnomer. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics
  • Epic story line
  • Voice acting

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game (I'm not a kid, I wanted an anonymous review)
First of all I am a avid RPGer and have played many, many different titles. Although FFX was not the best it was certainly very good.

Graphics- Nine out of Ten. The FMVs were beutiful and lifelike. If you have ever see one you will agree. However, during gameplay some of the transitions werent as good as they could be. Also the characters could be choppy at times.

Story- Ten out of Ten. In the beginning the story can be kind of confusing and boring. Although once you get farther into the game it gets better and better. There are several good plot twists which keep you interested. Also, for the people who do nothave any kind of patience this game is not for you. The cutscenes can be "long" (they are not really that long, try Xenogears and Xenosaga if you want long, but if you don't have any patience they will be horrible).

Gameplay- Nine out of Ten. I thought the gameplay was good, although there were some problems with it. I personlly loved the Sphere Grid it was a fun and different way of leveling up. But, once you get most of the sphere grid done you are grossly overpowered and it gets very, very easy to win battles. The random encounters are a little bit too frequent in my opinion, but you need them to level up. I also liked how you could switch characters during battle.

Sound- Seven out of Ten. The music was okay, just okay, nothing really stuck in my head the way it did with some other games. The worst aspect of the sound was the voice acting ugh! Sometimes it was completely laughable. But, in my opinion it was not that big a deal.

Overall I thought this was a great game. If you don't have patience hovever this game will be like pulling teeth for you. It took me 50 hours to beat this game on my first playthrough. Which is fairly long for an RPG (I have played much longer). But I do recomend this game to people who have a patient bone in their body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I have this game and almost up to the final boss and this is the first Final Fantasy to have voices in it.It has a sphere grid to level up your characters.

2-0 out of 5 stars No, no, no, no, no.....
I played this game for a long, long time (about 35 hours) and quit before beating it. Here's what I think:

First, the pros.

1. The game has good graphics for its time, definitely, although some animations are a little excessive. Backgrounds mix between 3D and pre-rendered, all usually unique and beautiful.

Okay, that about does it for the pros. Now, the cons.

1. The battling is, to put it simply, horrendous. Although the battle system is faster than previous FF games, it is inexcusable to have such a basic battle system in any RPG today. Seriously, its less advanced than many SNES RPG's. No time limits (as in FFVI, FFVII, or Chrono Trigger), no real-time implementation, nothing. Just plain, "select attack and watch" battling. Oh wait, there is one new aspect. During battle, you can switch characters in and out, which does lead to pretty handy healing or power-up situations. I'll admit, that aspect is interesting.

2. When you're not battling, the game is at its worst. It goes like this: first, there is a cutscene, then a long, painfully linear path full of random encounters every 10 seconds, and then a boss. That's it. For 35 hours or so, cutscene, linear path, boss, repeat. It starts out fun (which is why the game recieved such great reviews), but about 15-20 hours into it the fun is gone. At around 30 hours, it starts to get painful.

3. The plot is drab. I hear all these great things about the plot, but I can't agree. The plot, like the rest of the game, is basic and not innovative. It also goes from passable to just plain lame by the end of the game.

4. Audio is also drab. Music is good, but nothing sticks in my mind like Chrono Cross or the SNES RPG's of old. Voice acting starts strong, but all of the voices get very, very annoying later on.

5. Characters. Ugh. All of them are stereotypes. Tidus, the protaganist, is your typical hero with the "let's go get 'em!" attitude. Yuna is your female caster who is quiet and sensitive. Auron is your "cool" character, whose sole purpose is to be cool, and fails miserably. Rikku is the underage female who's your hyper-active and painfully annoying character, designed to test the young male gamer's Photoshopping skills. Lulu and Kimahri have no personality whatsoever. However, Wakka is a very interesting and fresh character, the only interesting one in the game. He has the best voice acting, also.

6. Blitzball. I expected a real time, soccer-like experience, but no. The developers got lazy and made it a simple turn-based borefest.

7. The Sphere Grid. What idiot thought of this idea? The old way of leveling up was fine, but the developers decided to change it for some reason. It's basically a new way of leveling up, but the thing is you level up at such small increments so often (it gets very annoying to go to the Grid after every few battles) that you never feel like you're getting more powerful. It's a perfect example of something that changes a game, but doesn't improve upon it. I definitely prefer the old style of leveling up.

Overall, the game is fun for a while (which is, as I stated before, why it got such good reviews). The whole game just gets worse and worse as time goes on. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Final Fantasy VIII
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
CD-ROM (22 September, 1999)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.

The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • A story to beat all stories
  • Characters worth caring about
  • Hey--it's from SquareSoft
  • Stunning animations
Cons:
  • Too many random battles
  • Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
  • Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

4-0 out of 5 stars To final fantasy players.
Before I got this game I was playing Final Fantasy 7 and was use to it.When I got this game it stunned me with how many battles you have to fight, but that's ok becuase it keeps you busy.At first I did not like it, but as the game progressed I ended up getting hooked on it.All I can say is that if you do not like role playing games you should not buy them, but if you are into role playing and a Final Fantasy fan this game is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why does everyone hate this game?!!?!?
Ok. In 1999, this game was releaed. Many people were like, "OMG! thiS gam3 suck comp@ too vee eye eye!!" But I loved it. It's not as good as VII, but only by a hair.

Gameplay:10/10: A new RPG where you are in the military SeeD. You have many summons called GF's. It's a long game, about 45 hours. Lots of sidequests, too.

Ok, many have complaints aboutthe Junction system. "It's too complicated! Wahhhh!" Well, READ THE GODDAMN TUTORIAL!!!! *Is glad to get that out of my system.

Graphics:10/10: For the time, they are excellent. The FMV's kick ass!

Music:10/10: Another high point. You might be humming the great tunes!

Story:9.5/10: OK, there is a lot of bashing with it. Personally, I liked Squall and others because they act realistic. Plus, lots of plot twists.

Overall, a great game overlooked by many. So relax, and quit complaing, guys!

2-0 out of 5 stars Terribly lame in content ...
My reviews contains spoilers. That being said, you should read it anyway.

Graphics: A+
It was pretty. Possibly brought out the PS's greatest potential.

Gamplay:B-
Wasn't terrible, but wasn't a lot of fun either.

Mini-games:A
FFVIII has a very fun card game you can opt to play.It was my favorite part of the game.

Story:F
A ridiculous love-story mixed with pubescent amnesiac orphan-soldiers fated to destroy a witch repeatedly due to a time-loop.Try to imagine all of the most horrendous story cliches thrown together. If you can't, FFVIII would be an enlightening though torturous experience for you.

The Characters:F-
Only the lead character has any amount of depth, but it never turns out to be more than: "At first I was a lonely brooder. But now that I opened my heart to friends and love, I have the strength to fight!!"Everyone else receives no true development what-so-ever.Most of them have practically identical pasts(amnesiac orphans). They're all teenage soldiers, much like the cast of power rangers. They all have distinct cookie-cutter personalities, much like the cast of power rangers. And these uninspired piles of cliche-excrement that saves the world routinely, much like the cast of power rangers.
The only explanation I could think of for this terrible, un-dynamic cast is that Square wanted to appeal to younger gamers by making a game about a soap opera about pretty high schoolers that have no parents and kick butt.

Anyway. With so few redeeming qualities, don't subject yourself to it.To be honest, I *liked* this game when it first came out.But I was also 13 at the time.Replaying it with more mature tastes, I've realized the content was terrible. There's no better way of describing it then: It's *stupid.* ... Editorial Review

Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience.

The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is cool!
I don't have this game but it is so cool(Just so you know,I'm 12 years old and will be 13 next January).I will play this game someday.I watched my older brother play Final Fantasy VII.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as top notch as the other FF's!
To sum things up, FF VII is a good game, but I find it is overrated. When it was released in the late 1990's it set the standard for graphics not only for RPG's, but for all video games from there on out.But in terms of the game itself, it leaves some things to be desired.

The characters for example, were not as well developed as they should have been. The lead character, Cloud, got about 80% of the character development, while the others only small bits are known about them. But I will say that each character does have his or her own unique personality so this area may not bother players too much.

The music in FF VII unfortunately, was horrible in my opinion.Especially when compared to other Square titles such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and even Final Fantasy IV (which is well over 10 years old). The battle music was good, but the rest was flat and uncreative, especially the music on the world map. Those of us who are familliar with the work of Square had expected much better in this department.

The game play was good. The materia system was a nice touch that added variety to the basic magic-using RPG.Basically, every character in the game can use spells, but they have to equip a materia onto their armor or weapon, and gain points through battles to learn each spell the materia has to offer. The only downside is that once the materia has been unequiped, the spell(s) go with it.But nonetheless, the materia system had breathed new life into the RPG world of magic-using.

You also have side quests, secret/hidden items and weapons, and secret characters just like most RPG's.The graphics are good, although the characters look very polygonized in their smaller forms. The CG scenes are beautiful. This is one area Square always dominates. They did a great job with those in FF VII.

It saddens me to give this game only 3 out of 5, but I must be honest.I love RPG's, especially the classics from Square, but I just don't think that FF VII deserves to be up there with CT, FF IV, and FF VI.Even the ending of FF VII was disappointing, because they did no follow-up on the characters. It's a good game overall, but it had the potential to be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars :)
best characters and storyline iv ever played....plot twists..great character development..this game does everything right.. Cloud:the main character is a bad ass, manley man..despite the fatc it probaly takes him 3 hours in the morning to do his hair..but hes cool none the less..barret: a black guy who is also manley and has a really bad temper...tifa:huge boobies, wears short shorts and is probaly really pretty if the graphics were better..oh and shes nice and obviously wants to get into clouds pants...aeris: a good girl who probaly shouldnt stand under balconys or anything somebody can jump on top of her... cid: foulmouth badass...this game has a lot of bad asses...red XIII: plays the role of the wise old man...though hes not a man and techinically in his years hes onky a teenager

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, uh...
This game is cute. Really it is. It's music is adorable too. For me it was a little difficult being that I was eating at the same time but heck. It's graphics are a little out dated, and the story line a little weak, but I guess it is okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute and fun game!
The reason I love this game is because I love Hello Kitty, and I love video games! In this game, you must help Hello Kitty get out of an uncharted island by gathering differrent items in 11 stages of the game. But watch out for those blocks, they could be trouble! The bonus rounds are a bit hard, but hey, you can deal! This game rocks! It's enteraining, graphic rich, the perfect video game! Don't quit when you're stuck, because your prize is worth while!

5-0 out of 5 stars cool game!
Cube Frenzy is a Tetris-like puzzle game with a very high cute factor! I was at first interested in this game because I am a big fan of Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty and Badtz Maru. I was happy to find that it isnot only fun, but challenging too. As you beat each level, you getdifferent Kitty's to play with and in Extra mode you unlock differentcharacters too. I like to play as Purin! Anyways, the most challenging isto play on the "Hard" difficulty level because you have to obtainall the prizes in a certain order. Also, the music really stays in yourbrain, which may be a blessing or curse... you decide!:) ... Read more

Editorial Review

Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classicChrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy namedSerge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and onein which he drowned 10 years earlier.

Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphicsand a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increaseyour power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physicalattacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attackssetting up fierce blows.

The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interestingcharacters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds toadvance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear tolook similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closerexamination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in oneworld thrives in the other.

My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexitiesof the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with earlybattles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic.--Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Lavish, vibrantly colored graphics
  • Unique battle system involving elements and casting awayrole-playing clichés like experience and magic points
Cons:
  • Easy battles due to powerful offensive and cure elements
  • For hours, players will be saying, "Get to the time travel stuff"

3-0 out of 5 stars Chrono Cross -- On its own
When I purchased this game, I had no idea that it was a sequel, and had never played the first game, Chrono Trigger. I really can't say how well Chrono Cross stands up as a sequel, but as a game on its own, it gets 3 stars from me.

Good things about Chrono Cross are the graphics (very nice, including the movie sections), the character designs (there are dozens of characters, and each one's look has been well thought out), and the music (even the world map music is good).

The gameplay is mostly fun, though the battles drag on and on when you start the game and don't have high-leveled characters. Once you get the hang of the battle system and have some good spells and characters to use, they become far less repetitive.

There are definately some bad things about Chrono Cross as well. Having never played Chrono Trigger, the plot made absolutely no sense whatsoever to me. This made it even more difficult to figure out what I was trying to do. At times, I had to wander aimlessly because the game wasn't clear what I was trying to accomplish at that point. Another low point of the game is the number of characters (40+). I got the feeling that the point of the game was not to try to save the world, but to see how many characters you can collect. Which brings me to my last gripe. You're expected to beat the game more than once (preferably at least 3 times all the way through). There are other events that you can trigger to happen and other plots which can unfold by choosing other paths, but honestly, I didn't feel the game was worth wasting another forty hours to beat just to get all 40 characters and seeing a different ending, especially when the original ending was so weak.

Overall, if you've never played Chrono Trigger, expect to be lost a lot. It does have its moments, but for the number of hours required to beat it, you're better off looking for something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chrono Cross Versus Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross is a game that you'll either love or hate.Your opinion is based largely on whether you view the game as the sequel to Chrono Trigger, which is a somewhat controversial issue as the game description states that it is while a game producer, during an interview, said that it's not.

One aspect of the game many find repulsive is that there are 40+ characters, resulting in shallow storylines and 9 or 10 lines on average per character throughout the game. The flip side is that you get to experiment and combine very different characters to form a team that you want.If you enjoyed the intimate friendly party in CT, you'll find that lost in CC.

In terms of storyline, CC does a good job of creating a story that is complex but makes sense at the same time. However, as mentioned above, if you're hoping for a continuation from Chrono Trigger, you'll once again be disappointed as none of the characters from CT are playable in CC.In fact, at least one character from CT meets a tragic end, which throws out the happy ending in CT.In terms of continuation, the plot does follow CT well minus the fact that Schala from CT looks completely different in CC (No wonder Magus couldn't find her!)

Anyway, Chrono Cross is a great game if you view it alone and avoid comparing it with the classic Chrono Trigger. The storylines take on a more complicated poetic tone and the characters system is largely different. These, however, still work in this new game.I would highly recommend Chrono Cross to those who have not overly idolized Chrono Trigger and were hoping for a Chrono Trigger clone on Playstation.

Happy gaming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Its no Chrono Trigger...but still an amazing, beautiful game
I finally played this game recently, quite a few years after it's release. At first I had serious doubts about it, as there seemed little connection to Chrono Trigger (which I am a big fan of), and the gameplay and story just didn't seem to be nearly as good. However, once I gave it a chance I really started getting into it.
I think one of the big downfalls of this game is that it is a sequel to such a phenomenal old SNES game, and everyone wanted it to be as good or better, which would have been a hard thing to achieve. In it's own right, this is an amazing game, regardless of it being a sequel or not.
It is a true sequel, and the story does tie in directly to the events in Chrono Trigger, however, that's about it...the story. If you want to see the characters or environments of Chrono Trigger, you're out of luck, as this game has all different characters and takes place in the El Nido archipelago, in the same world as Chrono Trigger but never explored in that game.
The other thing this game has in relation to Chrono Trigger is just the over all feel of the game...you can tell the same people made it.
The graphics of the game are incredibly beautiful, and though already quite dated, they still stand up well (they are comparable to say...Final Fantasy IX). The environments range from beautiful tropical regions to complex castles and dungeons, and all areas are very well thought out, fun to explore, and interesting. I'm glad they kept the overland map the same as in Chrono Trigger, making it fast and easy to get around. The music is wonderful as well, and while I would have liked to have heard a few more Chrono Trigger classics, I really can't complain...the music is beautiful and very well done.
The story is twisting and complex, and it's actually quite hard to keep straight what's going on sometimes and what world you are in, as the game takes place in two different dimensions of the same world as opposed to different time periods. The two different dimensions are very similar and it can be hard to keep straight what world you are in. Still, the story was very good, keeps you involved, and does end up having a lot of direct and very interesting tie-ins to Chrono Trigger. There is also a plethora of characters (near 40, I think), almost all of which have there own mini-stories.
That was one aspect of the game I have mixed feelings about. On one hand it's great and interesting to have so many unique characters to be able to use, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. But on the other hand, having so many characters makes it hard to really get into them, their stories end up being rather shallow, and you can never really power all of them up. You'll likely end up with a couple favorites of every color attribute that you use most often, which really isn't bad. Overall, they did a good job with the characters, and I like the system they used.
The gameplay is very fun, and although it is in most ways straight forward RPG, they do throw in some interesting twists to combat. Overall quite enjoyable.
There is an almost infinite amount of secret tidbits to unlock, so much that it would almost be impossible to find them all without the strategy guide. The direction of the game can change depending on choices you make, and conversations are always different depending on who is in your party. The game is incredibly open ended, and has multiple endings as well. This coupled with the fact that it has a new game + feature gives it incredible replay value. I just beat it the first time and I'm already replaying it again with all of my equipment, elements, and experience from the first play through to try and get a different ending.
Overall, I give this game five stars. It has excellent story, dialogue, graphics, sound, characters, and gameplay...every thing about it is great and it is a world you'll want to get lost in again and again. Alas, it is no Chrono Trigger, and a large part of me wishes they could have tied in some of the characters and places from that game a little more, but oh well. They did a different game in the same style as Chrono Trigger, and it's great fun. There are at least some fun little nostalgic elements, like at one point when you find an enertron and you can hop into it to fully revive your party, and when you get out you find "you're still hungry", along with the stomach growling straight from Chrono Trigger. Very fun stuff. Highly recommended to fans of Chrono Trigger, or just anyone who loves a good RPG with lots of replay value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars At long last....
Ive been eyeing Pocket Fighter since i first heard about it. At first it sounded like it wasnt so good but im glad i got it because its just what i wanted :)

To sum up; this game is great no matter what anyone says. Though its not for serious arcade players.
Plus+
-12 chara, much more then what puzzle fighter had(which is 6-8?)
-Street fighter and Darkstalker chara
-cameos of numerous other char(really well animated)
-if you like puzzle fighter you'd probably like this too

Downside-
-graphics are 2D(Looks more like snes. nice but not 3D)
-Not hard enough? (maybe for skilled players but seemed like a good challenge for me *shrugs*)
-only a few guy chara/mostly girls (i think this would be more enjoyable for girls)
-overly cute(if you dont like chibis, cuteness, etc then too bad for you)

If you like snes games especially odd and quirky imports then go ahead and give it a try. ^.^
