When the Pawn Hits fulfills the promise of Fiona Apple's debut, Tidal, a strong statement given that her first outing was one of 1996's most exciting collections. Dark and emotionally dense, Apple's sophomore effort is awash in alluring and witty undercurrents that belie its creator's youth. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fiona is an artistic genius.
Fiona Apple is an artistic genius. I love this album for it's depth, honesty, poetry, and intensity of spirit. The way Fiona's voice cracks at the end of the song, I Know, is hearbreaking. And the way Fiona compairs one way love with anorexia in the song Paper Bag is ingenius. I wish there were more artists like this out there on the scene today. Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Corinna Fugate, and Vanessa Carlton stand as one of a kind songwriters. I hope they release Fiona Apple's new CD soon! I will be the first to buy it! Free Fiona!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another bite from the Apple
Recently I picked up Fiona Apple's second album, When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Fight And He'll Win The Whole Thing `Fore He Enters The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest Of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right....which is typically shortened to When the Pawn... I was inspired to do this by my recent listening to the unreleased Extraordinary Machine, which is floating around all over the internet, and I would buy in a heartbeat.

So, When The Pawn... is another excellent album from Fiona. I've been listening to it mostly as I drive to and from work this week, and have fallen in love with a number of the tracks: "To Your Love", "Fast As You Can", "Limp", "Get Gone", and "A Mistake" are the ones which come to mind. Fiona has her own rather unique musical style, a mix of rock and blues and jazz and funk which complements her interesting and thoughtful lyrics.

This is not dance music. The songs don't all sound the same. The lyrics don't read like they were written by a teenager. If that's not your cup of tea, perhaps you should move on.

It's too bad that musical crap like Britney flourishes, while Fiona creates excellent music and is mostly ignored. Even the Grammy-winning Norah Jones can only aspire to be as thoughtful as this.

So, in case you were wondering, I do recommend this album. ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars Vastly overrated
I don't know who the people leaving all these "she's a genius" reviews here, but let me tell you, this album is a huge disappointment. I bought the album lured primarily by the glowing reviews, and I feel cheated.

The music is neither melodic nor touching, instead she produces a cocophany of loud noise and hopes her fans will see it as a "wonderfully elaborate arrangement".

The vocals are unremarkable, the composition is mediocre, and the lyrics are hardly poetic. This is just another singer riding high on the hype generated by her record label. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Even electronic toys have gone extreme. Kids love the original Bop It, an electronic toy that challenges response time to pull, twist, and bop different parts of the toy. The extreme version adds two more tasks, more sounds, and a taunting, smart-aleck announcer who directs the game. As you get better, the game moves faster until you miss a beat and lose, accompanied by a fair amount of noise and ridicule from the toy. People who don't think they'd ever want to play Bop It Extreme won't be able to put it down; it instills a compulsive need to bop till you drop. It can be played in a group and makes a good party game--even for serious adults. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too much, and makes you lose track of time!
I absolutely LOVE and RECOMMEND this toy for all children and adults. Not only do you get to test your hand/eye coordination and listening skills, but you can have a blast while doing it and challenge your friends and family. My only issue with the BOP-IT EXTREME is the volume, it's not something you can play in quiet/ without disturbing others, I had to solve the SHHHHHHHH BE QUIET issue by putting some duct tape over the speaker to muffle the nosed down a little bit, there is NO volume controls. but overall it's a very fun and unique gift to give and toy, and it makes for a great drinking or party game for adults!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Special needs Bop-It Genius
My second son has cerebral palsy and struggles with lots of skills. However, much to my surprise he excels at this crazy little game! I am a physically able bodied woman approaching 40 and my high score so far is 17. That's on a GOOD day. My son just hit his personal best score of 130. Imagine his dismay when I looked it up online and informed him that the top score possible was 250. He doesn't know what he will do after 250. Now, if only someone creative could formulate a way to MARKET this skill. ;+) If we didn't already have Bop-It Extreme I would much prefer the second edition because of the volume control and/or headphones. However, I do like the fact that we have to master some patterning and math skills to figure out the highscore from the sound beats. Happy bopping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bop it Extreme II is the best!!
Bop it Extreme II is a really fun game. I first played it at my friend's house. We played it for hours and held exciting competitions. It is probably one of the best electronic games that I have ever played! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

She has a precocious 3-year-old sister who tends to leave wet nappies at the foot of her bed, an insane cat who is prone to leg-shredding "Call of the Wild" episodes, and embarrassing parents who make her want to escape to Stonehenge and dance with the Druids. No wonder 14-year-old Georgia Nicolson laments, "Honestly, what is the point?" A Bridget Jones for the younger set, Georgia records the momentous events of her life--and they are all momentous--in her diary, which serves as a truly hilarious account of what it means to be a modern girl on the cusp of womanhood. No matter that her particular story takes place in England, the account of her experiences rings true across the ocean (and besides, "Georgia's Glossary" swiftly eradicates any language barriers).

The author, Louise Rennison, is a British comedy writer and it shows. WhetherGeorgia is dealing with wearing a bra ("OK, it's a bit on the loose side and does ride up round my neck if I run for the bus"), pondering kissing and how to know which way to turn your head ("You don't want to be bobbing around like pigeons for hours"), or managing the results of an overzealous eyebrow-plucking episode ("Obviously, now I have to stay in forever"), she always cracks us up. Georgia struggles with the myriad issues facing teen girls--boys, of course being at the forefront--but she does it with such humor and honesty it almost seems like a good time. This refreshingly funny book is ripe for a sequel, which readers will await in droves. (Ages 11 and older). --Brangien Davis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the cheesy stuff that girls are reading?
This book is cheesy, immoral, and disgusting. Like a list of how to go from a goodnight kiss to a LOT more, wink wink. It is poorly written and tasteless. It's about a boy-crazy, sex-hungry, brainless, bratty 14 or 15 year old who hates her parents and little sister and practically drools for boys. Good grief, there's plenty of people who could write bette (insert proper word) than this! (I'm 16, but I cannot use an adult form!! 8-[

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but just about
Such an adorable book!Cute as all get-out.I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy this book so much as I'm well past my teenage years; however, it was one my daughter wanted to read and the title looked interesting, so I gave it a try.

Georgia doesn't have all the answers, but doesn't always pretend like she does; she is the typical 14 year old and then some. How does a woman of Louise Rennison's age write such an appealing character of such a tender age? However she is able to do it, she does it brilliantly.

This book was a quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable.Even though it's a lightweight, it's definitely a feel-good lightweight, not one that leaves you wishing you hadn't bothered.I got such a kick out of Rennison's Georgia. And the minor characters you could sense as people, like her mom, dad and sister - not as afterthoughts.

I read The Year My Life Went Down The Loo by Katie Maxwell before I read this book; what a ripoff of Angus, Thongs... it is!And a very poor one at that.

I look forward to reading more of Louise Rennison in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
I'm not really a book person but I decided to get one with a voucher that I had. This book was well worth it, it's so funny.
Georgia and her diary entries are hilarious, and language such as " piddly-diddly department" and nunga-nungas are well thought up.

    The Wizard of Oz

    VHS Tape (19 October, 1999)

    Editorial Review

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon ... 1-0 out of 5 stars some say it's a metaphor for capitalism
i say it's one of the worst films of all time.

horrible script, terrible plot, atrocious acting. worthless and overrated.

it's funny how nowadays people complain about how mindless films like XXX and Dodgeball are destroying america, well, Wizard of Oz is the original XXX, nothing more than eye candy.

this "film" is one of two films that i wish were never created.

    the other being ET

1-0 out of 5 stars So dumb
So you think this is good eh? Well,it stinks! There is'nt much point in watching it. This movie should be a movie only babies watch. For some reason,my sister likes this movie!?! Now tell me,what could be more pointless then watching a little girl and other stupiod characters (tin man, scarecrow, etc) going to a castle where the Wizard turns them back to where they belong. Boring!

    Graphics 0/5
The worst graphics in history. Even movies like Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer had cooler graphics. When I'm watching it,I force myself to see once I get to the castle part..... woooosssshhhh I run out of the room so I don't see this totrure.

    Sound 1/5
The sound is okay. But difinitly not the best

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring, stupid questions
It's obvious that 8 balls suck, it's just some random answers that may not be true; or you could get a repetitive question and does no more but to waste your time over un-true questions.

If a robotic company invented a talking 8 ball with no random questions and can be your pal as a lie detector, than that one I like..

When my parents questioned me a few weeks ago about my finances, I knew I was in trouble.
I had missed 7 car payments and they had wondered how I let that happen. I told them about how I consult my psychic before I purchase anything. They looked upset, very upset. My psychic hasn't been making good decisions lately, so that's how I was in so much trouble.
When they asked how much my psychic charges, I let them know, she is $35 for a 10 minute session. And, I do have to advise her a lot because I make a lot of purchases.

To help my financial status, my parents gave me one of these to cut down on psychic fees.
Believe it or not, the 8 Ball is actually more accurate than my previous psychic, Helga The Unbeleivable!

I have done very well for myself since I got my 8 Ball and now I think I might be able to buy those buttock implants I've been looking to get for a few years now!

Midnight Motion Lamp with White Lava and Blue Lamp

    Editorial Review

The lava lamp was invented in 1963, and in 1965 this hypnotic incendiary made its way to NorthAmerica--just in time to herald the psychedelic era. Faster than you could say, "Peace, brother," theundulating oozing motion of lava blobs flowing through liquid became de rigueur in every swingingpad. As the Summer of Love gave way to the Me Decade and the Greed Is Good '80s, the lamp lay dormant, waiting for the day when its unadulterated grooviness would be rediscovered by a new generation. Now thatday has arrived, and Lava World International is ready with this classically simple, unbelievably easy-to- assemble Midnight Lava Lamp. With its clean lines, tastefully understated black base, and unearthly blueglow, this lamp is sure to complement (almost) any décor.--Lisa Whipple ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool item but not perfect
I own one of these wonder toys. I recommend them for the top of every desk in the world. These little devices are not perfect. Here is a list of complaints... 1) they will actually heat up your office. This is fine in the winter but in the summer one does not need to actually ADD heat to their office. 2) after about 6 months of use (you really need the soothing effects daily) the little globs just don't flow like they once did. After about 23 hours of work the glob just likes to sit on the bottom. When this happens you WILL get cranky as you no longer have the bubbles to relax you. 3) the bulb burns out after 643 hours and 22 minutes. Can't figure that fast? Well bub, that means you will have to replace the bulb about every 4 months or 3 times per year.

I just got my lava lamp 2 days ago and I just want to say that this is a really good lava lamp. The color will lit up your room in the dark. The only bad thing that when the lava inside is heated up, and you shake it or accidently bumped into it, the lava will break apart temporarily. And you have to wait like one hour for it to become back to normal.Another thing is that when you first get the lava lamp, there are lots of airbuble in them. You have to let it run for a week for the buble to be gone. ... Editorial Review

A stupendous historical saga, Braveheart won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for star Mel Gibson. He plays William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish commoner who unites the various clans against a cruel English King, Edward the Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan). The scenes of hand-to-hand combat are brutally violent, but they never glorify the bloodshed. There is such enormous scope to this story that it works on a smaller, more personal scale as well, essaying love and loss, patriotism and passion. Extremely moving, it reveals Gibson as a multitalented performer and remarkable director with an eye for detail and an understanding of human emotion. (His first directorial effort was 1993's Man Without a Face.) The film is nearly three hours long and includes several plot tangents, yet is never dull. This movie resonates long after you have seen it, both for its visual beauty and for its powerful story. --Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
I feel sorry for everyone who rated this movie with 4 and less stars, they miss out on the enjoyment of one of the best movies ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Film, Two Thumbs Up!
Mel Gibson has produced and helped brew up a masterpiece.
William Wallace is a Scottish commoner, a bit on the rowdy, adventurous side, but for the most part normal.
To summarize this epic in a sentence or two, Wallace fights for the freedom of Scotland, and slightly because of a rage triggered by the murder of his beloved, Murron. After countless attacks and a couple of battles, Wallace's life comes to an end.
This is a phenomenal movie, though it has very discreet imperfections (which all movies have), it is thought-provoking and well beyond poignant. I must warn you that this film might have you sobbing, it had me doing so.
Don't expect a fairytale ending, and don't expect everyone to be happy. I grant you, yes, there is a lot of fighting, I, not one to be affected by gore, did have to shield my eyes from the slaughtering, but the battle seens are worth the movie.
This is not an intellectual film, and it is not an action flick. It's a work of art.

1-0 out of 5 stars Actually it's mostly baloney.
William Wallace was nothing like the dude portrayed in the movie. For one, he did not get to fornicate with the crown princess. In reality, at Wallace's death, the princess was only a little child. If he DID fornicate with her, then so much the better that a pedophhile was torn to pieces.

On another front, I have to say that the plot is rather cheesy. The good guy is done injustice (his woman was slain) and is out for revenge. That's his primary motive.Somewhere along the way the freedom of Scotland got into the fold, almost as an afterthought. In this regard it is not unlike the US's case for the Iraqi invasion -- freedom being used as a tool to elevate a completely mundane cause. But this is after all a Western movie for the consumption of the Western masses.Certain things sell well -- the more-or-less revisionist history of a fight for freedom being one, the other being the good guy getting the girl -- and are exploited to the fullest extent.

In the whole, this is altogether a rather banal film.Hence the 1 star (actually 0.5). ... Read more

A wonderful blend of deduction with a form of 20 Questions. Two players try to deduce the identity of their opponent's "Mystery Person." Using game boards with 48 frames apiece and an equal number of cards displaying character faces, players ask one another yes or no questions that help narrow the pool of possibilities. Through process of elimination, the identity of the Mystery Person slowly becomes evident. As kids' skill levels grow, their questions become more strategic, allowing them to solve the mystery faster and faster. The faces on the cards are cheerful and clever and designed to give subgroups among the 48 characters just enough similarities to challenge players. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Fun & Easy
My 5 year-old has played this game every day since he received it as a birthday gift 4 weeks ago.I don't mind playing it with him because it moves fast, challenges both players, and isn't only based on luck (i.e. Candyland, Chutes & Ladders), so no one cries when they don't win.We just play again. He is developing strategies in asking better questions. He can beat me fair and square.I do wish there were more girls, though, because, as he has already figured out, if you are guessing a girl, you almost always win.

3-0 out of 5 stars Newer isn't always better...look for the 1998 version.
I'm an educational therapist, and had borrowed another therapist's "Guess Who?" game to use with students.I found it to be great for students who need work on visual discrimination, and it builds categorizing skills and other thinking skills. The game I borrowed had a copyright date of 1998.I found this game so useful that I decided to buy it for myself, but, though Amazon.com pictures the 1998 version, I got a newer, but not improved, version. The only improvement is that it comes in a smaller box, so it's more portable. My main complaint is that the drawings of the faces are very simplistic, and lacking in any character, in contrast to the very detailed faces of the original game, which actually exude personality. In addition, though it looks as though Milton Bradley tried to show a little more cultural diversity than in the original game, they still aren't representing genders equally; still only one fourth of the characters are female. Finally, the "deck" of face cards is not a real deck this time, but small rectangles that you have to punch out from a card.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty fun
A couple teenagers were playing this when I was little and that's how I found out about this game. I've bought it since then and played it a lot with all ages. Usually when I'm playing with teens, I'll play the more complex version that includes having 2 face cards instead of just one. Most of the time, the 2 people have totally different features and you have to try to narrow it down without flipping down the wrong people!
So try the variations as well....you might discover something! ... Read more

It's "the game that ties you up in knots"! Twister has beenaround forever, and it's still as much fun as you remember. The gamebox contains a spinner, a plastic mat marked with colored circles, andthe rules, which are brief. You don't need anything else except a groupof friends. A referee spins the spinner to come up with a color andwhether a hand or a foot is to be placed in a circle of that color. It's easy at first, but after four or five spins you'll be more tangledthan a plate of spaghetti. If you fall, or if any part of you except ahand or a foot touches the mat, you're out, and the last player left isthe winner. If you're looking for something to break the ice atparties, this game is it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic for all ages really
Surely everyone knows Twister? My first encounter was when my sister got the game for her birthday in 1976.
She and her friends had a ball with it at her party, then the adults had a go; or rather the Dads.
The Mums all seemed to wear frocks in those days and they didn't want to disgrace themselves at my Sister's party! The Dads on the other hand, would be really dumb at the drop of a hat to make us kids laugh.
I remember it being fun whatever age I was (I played a lot of games at college and we were all pretty giddy with wine then, much like the Dads back in 76!).
You can't fail to enjoy it, just be careful if your back is troubled or you have any injuries that are healing. Oh and be careful if you play with someone with stinky feet! the game really is a "shoes off" number, This is a fine idea but I remember back in 76 one of the Dads was not so sweet and one of my college buddies was rank! This means the mat needs a wipe down occassionally, otherwise there is a unfortunate lasting pong every time you open the box!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars It's a blast!
I have played this for years at birthday parties, but finally got one of my own last summer. So I took it to a Summer Youth Camp with me...and about 25 of us teens took turns on there. It was such a blast!
The only thing I would say is, if you have back or neck problems, you might want to skip this one. Or you could always be the spinner person. Either way, this one's tons of fun!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Twister-4 1/2 Stars
Twister is a very nice, fun, calm game. If you have any sort of party with friends this is a great game to play. And it's not really any age limit, just as long as you know your right from your left. ... Read more

The foursome come roaring out of the blocks with their latest collection. The album's first single, "Beautiful Day," raced to the No. 1 slot on the U.K. singles charts and received a similar rapturous reception stateside. From its shimmering preamble to its sweeping, infectious chorus, it perfectly stakes out the middle ground between the anthemic U2 of the '80s and the more grounded group of the '90s. With Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno sharing production chores again after having taken a break with Pop, the U2 team enters the new millennium with their lineup--and mission--intact. --Steven Stolder ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of sh**!
This album is full of rubbish! They can't make music...why they don't just quit? It would be the best...this is like Radiohead! Terrible!

4-0 out of 5 stars Its really not that bad.......
........this was U2 (apparently) going back to their roiginal sound after the more experimental (but much better) Pop and Zooporopa and Actuang Baby.

The problem is its little poppy and was liked to much by the mainstream pop audiences, which probably lost them respect from their fans.
This is a fantastic album when you compare it with "How to dismantle an atomic bomb"
everything they did was great until after the promising "electrical storm."

2-0 out of 5 stars Leave it behind!
