Ferris Bueller's Day Off Director: John Hughes Average Customer Review: DVD (24 June, 2003) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $11.24 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Like a soda pop left open all night, Bueller seems to have lost its effervescence over time. Sure, Matthew Broderick is still appealing as the perennial truant, Ferris, who fakes his parents out and takes one memorable day off from school. Jeffrey Jones is nasty and scheming as the principal who's out to catch him. Jennifer Grey is winning as Ferris's sister (who ends up making out in the police station with a prophetic vision of Charlie Sheen). But there's a definite sense that this film was of a particular time frame: the '80s. It's still fun, though. There's Ferris singing "Twist and Shout" during a Chicago parade, and a lovely sequence in the Art Institute. But don't get it and expect your kids to love it the way you did. Like it or not, it's yours alone. --Keith Simanton ... Read more Features Reviews (293)

Rubik's Cube Average Customer Review: Toy -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Even if you've been living on Mars since the 1970s, you've probably heard of Rubik's Cube, the bestselling puzzle in history. Just in case, though, here's a recap: it's a 3-by-3-by-3-inch cube with rotating faces made up of nine squares that can be scrambled into (so it's said) 43 quintillion combinations. Getting the cube back to its original position (so that all nine squares of the same color make up each face) is incredibly challenging for most, though it can be mastered and solved. For those not gifted with superhuman spatial intuition, this mindbender comes with a solution hints booklet, which examines the cube's properties and offers clues for solving the puzzle. Whether it's a difficult toy or retro '80s kitsch you're seeking, Rubik's Cube is for you. --Rob Lightner ... Read more Reviews (41)

The Goonies Director: Richard Donner Average Customer Review: DVD (14 September, 2004) list price: $19.96 -- our price: $14.97 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review You may be surprised to discover that the director of the Lethal Weapon movies and scary horror flick The Omen, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. The Goonies, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes). --Samantha Allen Storey ... The Breakfast Club Director: John Hughes Average Customer Review: DVD (01 April, 2003) list price: $19.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh ... As a homeschooling family, we look for toys that will reinforce skills that we are teaching, challenge our children and that are fun! This toy has it all! Even my youngest, who just turned 2 enjoys playing this game. He is too young to really understand it, but loves the lights and music! The older children benefit from having an adult speak the color pattern out as they play, such as, "blue, blue, yellow, etc". We've found it to meet the needs of all learning styles when used in this way! I would definately recommend this toy to other families! And an added bonus, is that it's fun for the parents to pass the time with as well.

Lite Brite Cube Average Customer Review: Toy list price: $24.99 -- our price: $22.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Lite Brite offers a whole new dimension to creative play with the latest rendition: the Lite Brite Cube. While the space to create on is a bit smaller, artists now have four pegged panels into which they can poke colors. The cube requires adult assembly, but once thats done, its just like you remember. Choose a design sheet from the eight included--or go freeform with solid black paper--and start plugging colored pegs into their respective spots. Over 500 pegs are included in a rainbow of colors, and the cube has two drawers to store them in. (These drawers fall out quite easily and can cause a mess of spilled pegs, so be careful when transporting.) New to the peg world are Power Pegs--up to four of the same colored peg molded together for quicker completion. The Lite Brite Cube has a blue plastic handle at the top so artwork can be carried around (and shown off) easily. --Pam Lauer ... Read more Reviews (64)

The Princess Bride (Special Edition) Director: Rob Reiner Average Customer Review: DVD (11 January, 2005) list price: $14.95 -- our price: $11.21 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earnedits own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story. And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity... The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland ... Dirty Dancing (Collector's Edition) Director: Emile Ardolino Average Customer Review: DVD (15 January, 2002) list price: $14.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it,Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing inthe movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--itdoes take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby"Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey) has beenvacationing in the Catskills with her family for many years. Uneventfully. Onesummer, she falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle(Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world.Baby's father, Jake (Law and Order's Jerry Orbach), can't see the basicdecency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to findthat Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake. Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TVseries, and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze havechemistry, charisma, and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie withoccasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a corner!"--thatnonetheless carries an underlying message about tolerance and is filled with thekind of exuberant spirit that's hard for even the most cynical to resist. Notthat they'd ever admit it. --Kathy Fennessy ... Read more Features Reviews (243)

Footloose Director: Herbert Ross Average Customer Review: DVD (19 August, 2003) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie. --Tom Keogh ... The Worst Witch (The Movie) Director: Robert Young (III) Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (28 September, 1999) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $14.23 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is setin an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and blackschool uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching youngFairuza Balk.Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized GrandWizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over theschool. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less thanstate-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--mostbizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weirdmusic video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. Sixteen Candles (High School Reunion Collection) Director: John Hughes Average Customer Review: DVD (02 September, 2003) list price: $19.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton ... Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer Director: Kimio Yabuki, Bernard Deyriès Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (02 August, 1993) list price: $14.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The girl with the striped moonboots and royal-blue epaulets is back from the 1980s to save the world for a new generation of young viewers. This time the gal, her rainbow-tailed horse Starlite, and her sidekick sprite Twink must face down a selfish princess who has stolen the biggest diamond in the universe, preventing light from reaching the world, and sending earth into a neverending winter. (Don't try to justify the plot from a scientific standpoint.) The rerelease of this 1985 production marks the relaunching of the Rainbow Brite franchise, following the successful returns of other '80s era cartoon characters like Care Bears and My Little Pony. Nostalgic young parents will revel in the big hair and big shoulders, and little ones will just enjoy the pretty horses and the colors. This 85-minute movie may also have some appeal to young males as the secondary hero is a boy with a robotic horse. (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more Features Reviews (74)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Figure: Michaelangelo Average Customer Review: Toy (06 January, 2003) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When one considers the great sculptor Michelangelo, "wacky comedy" is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But in the ever-unusual world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Michelangelo is the comic relief character. He can still take care of himself in a scrap, though: He is here equipped with two nunchakus along with two ninja throwing stars. Also included is a rappelling hook set-up thats perfect for escaping dangerous situations. Parents may wish to consider discussing the notion of "cartoon violence" versus "actual violence" before handing a child a toy of a turtle that uses deadly weapons. The range of motion here is limited, but that can be overlooked. After all, even though theyre teenagers and ninjas, theyre still turtles. --Charlie Williams ... Read more Reviews (10)

Master Of The Universe Heroic Warriors: Smash Blade He-man Average Customer Review: Toy US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The old Masters of the Universe action figures featured good guy characters who, while certainly committed to defeating evil, never seemed all that upset about their crusade. But in the new generation of figures, He-Man in particular looks downright furious. I guess twenty years of pursuing Skeletor will do that to a guy. Apparently, it's also given him plenty of time to work out because 6-1/2-inch He-Man is flat out ripped. This new musculature will come in handy while lifting a 5-inch sword, a big shield, or his snazzy smash blade, which is a set of three spiky balls that can spin around on a single stick. He-Man can swivel at the hips with a springy action that makes swinging his weapons look even more intimidating. He'll need those tools, his new muscles, and all that pent-up annoyance to counter his funny looking getup though: fuzzy blue briefs and boots along with gold wristbands. --Charlie Williams ... Unicron Average Customer Review: Toy list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review All the Transformers must think it's pretty cool that they can transform themselves from a robot into, say, an airplane or a tank or a bus or whatever. We're sure they feel pretty powerful and intimidating when they pull off that neat trick. But compared to what Unicron can do, well, we're afraid that's small potatoes. Because Unicron can turn into a planet. That's right, a planet. You heard me: a planet. In the lore of Transformers, Unicron is long thought to be merely a legend until he shows up bent on taking over and the heroic Autobots must team up with the evil Decepticons to defeat him. Though it's difficult to rival the feat of turning into a planet, Unicron is pretty impressive as a robot as well, with glowing eyes and fist and three spring-loaded missiles. He even has a sidekick, Dead-End, who fits neatly inside Unicron's leg. --Charlie Williams ... Read more Reviews (61)
