Editorial Review

This GameCube starter kit comes with one jet black GameCube, two jet black controllers, and one memory card Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others.

For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files; the company has concentrated its efforts on games. The prelaunch titles we've seen play uniformly smooth, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional "bottlenecks" that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down, hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based media rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas. While most other systems likewise store their games on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as it is to deter would-be software pirates.

Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers--Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can only play Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars.

The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games. It even has a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gamecube, Xbox, or Playstation 2?
I own a Gamecube but I can still comment on the Xbox and Playstation 2. Gamecube has exclusive titles that are very good (Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Resident Evil, Mario, Zelda.) The DVD/CD is on the down side, but problems do exist with the PS2's DVD, and you have to buy a remote for the Xbox. I love the GCN controller except for it's lack of buttons. The connectivity with the Game Boy Advance is a plus. Gamecube drops in the online category, but paying for a monthly service really doesn't appeal to me. The Gamecube has a fair release forecast with Rogue Squadron III, Pikmin 2, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy CC, and Metroid 2. My second console choice would be the Xbox. The Controller-S is a big improvement from the original controller. The Xbox controller is best in my opinion. DVD capabilities add to the Xbox's power, and there is no need for memory cards because of it's built in hard drive. The Xbox dominates the online world with Xbox Live. Xbox has a strong line-up of games (Halo, Metal Gear Solid, ummmm...oh yea Splinter Cell), and a good selection of upcoming games (Halo 2, Perfect Dark, Splinter Cell 2). In last but fairly close is the Playstation 2. The ability to play the hundreds of PS One games is awesome and the DVD function is okay. The PS2 is the least powerful machine but it still performs up to par with the GCN and XBOX. Online play is standard with good games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto). I'm sure Sony will keep Final Fantasy and GTA alive especially with the upcoming release of the Playstation Portable. My advice: Don't buy a Playstation 2 just yet. Sony is releasing a PSX, which is an advanced PS2. The PSX doesn't have DVD problems and it can record your favorite television shows on it's 120GB hard drive. First, buy a Gamecube. Then an Xbox, and then a PSX. Thank You!

5-0 out of 5 stars "What's this purple cubed thing?"
When I first received the Gamecube for Christmas, my first question was, "What's this purple cubed thing?" Of course, I had heard about the GC, but I hadn't planned on purchasing it until I really had the chance to look into more infor about it. I'm a big fan of Nintendo systems, and I've been buying them for years, but I wasn't sure what the GC had to offer me.

This is a gamer's console. Yes, it looks a little comical in nature (a purple cube... that's cute), and the games being advertised with the system might have seemed a little childish(Luigi's Mansion?). Don't let that fool you though. This console is for people looking to game. It doesn't play your favorite DVDs or your music. Instead, Nintendo offers you crisp graphics and enjoyable gameplay.

I think Nintendo is sticking to it's roots and keeping a firm control of games and characters that have made their consoles popular over the years, BUT more and more games are being made for this system (Silent Hill, anyone?). This console has such titles as Metroid, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil available for play, and these are not what one would consider "childish" games.

Also, this system is geared to suit everyone's gaming needs from children to teens to adults. That's a plus in my book. Playstation and Xbox (both of which I own as well) seems to have the older gamer in mind (The average gamer is 28 after all) and tends to forget that children do play these systems. I don't think Nintendo has forgotten that. That's one reason it will remain a favorite with me.

If you're looking for just a valuable gaming experience, this is definitely a good way to start. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Normally, Nintendo contract players such as Mario, Pikachu, Link, DonkeyKong, Bowser, and Kirby are generally happy and well-mannered, but in SuperSmash Bros. Melee, the pleasantries get thrown out and the gloves (exceptfor Mario's) come off. This update of the N64 favorite features these and othervideo game icons in furious, yet utterly absurd fisticuffs that usually make fora smashing good time. Just make sure you have at least one human opponent topound on.

Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked),the game has a pretty standard premise--let Nintendo's stars beat on each otheruntil the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knockingopponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. In typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. The actual combatisn't as intricate as in other fighting games; however, the ultra-cartoonylayout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usuallyfound in similar titles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee's strength lays in the mayhem created infour-player fights. The camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so allcombatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the bestvisuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, andthe movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Donkey Kong lumbersand Princess Peach fights with grace.

As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game's existence, thesingle-player mode is decidedly weak. The game features an adventure mode that playssomewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. Sadly, despite its goodlooks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best whenthere are two or more players with controllers in their hands. --MarkBrooks

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat
  • Many new characters and other goodies to unlock
Cons:
  • Single-player experience is comparatively weak
  • Too cute for a few folks
  • Adventure mode is boring

5-0 out of 5 stars There's is Hope!
The Gamecube, ah the Gamecube. It's good, but not good enough, but hey, that's just my opinion. I did not want a Gamecube, I did not! But I decided what the heck, I loved the original Super Smash, so I bought The Super Smash Bros. Melee. Oh my god! this game was so good, I loved it, My PS2 seems like nothing compared to Super Smash. It's a great game, and it has such a huge lasting appeal or replay value.

Gameplay: The controls are suprisingly easy, if you can button mash, this is your game, if you're not so good at controls, you need some practice. but very easy.

Graphics: C'mon, you know you like them, kicks the PS2's graphics outta the the park! And they run very smoothely. The only problem is how you can run right through people, but who cares! (8/10)

Entertainment: What do u think? So much, with the BIG variety of characters, nice variety of levels, multi-player, you know, a lot of entertainment is to be had. (10/10)

Replay Value: A lot! You'll never want to stop! Okay, you will, but you'll want to fit it into your schedule every day, yeah, it's that good!(10/10)

Difficulty: C'mon, if you think it's hard, you won't have too much luck on hard or very hard mode. (9/10)

Overall: Sure this game has it's flaws, but what game doesn't?! It should be 19.99, but it's so good, it's still 30.00, and it's a Player's Choice! Buy it, it's really, really worth it!
(9/10, overall score) (not an average)

Finally, There's hope for the Gamecube!!

GameCube Wavebird Wireless Controller

Editorial Review

Wouldn't it be nice to play games without a cord stretching across yourliving-room floor, especially if you have little kids or large dogs in yourhousehold? Nintendo's Wave Bird isn't the first wireless controller ever broughtto market, but it's a whole lot better than what came before. You may remember abrief fad a few years ago with spotty infrared devices. These units failedbecause they were a lot heavier than standard controllers, and also because theyrequired a direct line of sight between the controller and the infraredreceiver. The Wave Bird is much lighter (it weighs a bit more than a regularcontroller) and uses radio frequency signals for reliable game control atdistances of up to 20 feet. Unless your playing on a stadium-size TV screen, that should be more than enough. The unit will last for about 100 hours of useon just two AA batteries and has 16 channel frequencies, so you'll easily beable to hook up four controllers without interference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Controllers Ever!
I swear by these controllers. I have 3 of them and they are workhorses. Couldn't lose the signal if you tried. Highly Reccomend!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Story on the WaveBird Wireless Controller
I first heard about this brand in the Toys "R" Us big toy book.
On Christmas Eve I went to aunt Helene's they have a cool projector and my cousin Matt played with the GameCube on the projcetion screen. He was busy playing an NBA basketball game, and I wanted to play a game with him. So my mom told him to play a game with him, and I picked Mario Party 4. I had the WaveBird wireless controller. When the game was over I wanted it so badly.
I have a baby brother he's a toddler now so he's curious and I don't have to tangle the wires to prevent him from getting it. Instead I can just keep it in a safe place. Also I play on the floor, and it's more comfy playing on the bed. I haven't got it yet because Mom just ordered it.

4-0 out of 5 stars WhyBuy This When you can get a corded controller?
Why? Because it is much more durable. I own 3 corded contollers which I bought at the same time as my only wireless. The corded ones broke about 1 year hence, the wireless is still going strong. [...] In any case, if you are looking for an excellent gaming experience Purchase this item. SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Game Cube Mega Memory 16X Memory Card

Editorial Review

The Mega Memory 16X memory card holds 944 blocks of space for game saves, team statistics, and other file types associated with today's games. It has 16 times more space than Nintendo's Memory Card 59, and that extra space means you won't have to sacrifice your old high scores just to save new ones. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The many many other reviews on this page are right
This card will let you down in the end. If only I'd read these reviews before I bought it. The night I got my GameCube back in March, I bought this memory card along with it, thinking it'd be great because it had so much memory space. And up till now, it was fine. But about 20 minutes ago, the card became corrupted. I tried shaking it, blowing off dust, trying different slots, selecting no on the "Would you like to format?" selection screen again and again, but nothing works. All my data is unusable now. My Sonic games, Metal Gear Solid: TTS, Super Mario Sunshine, all of it, unusable. Now all I'm left with is regret. As another one of the many many people who were duped into buying this piece of junk, all I can say is: DO NOT BUY THIS. I can't stress that enough. It's just not worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ya it is junk.
I just bought the new Mvp baseball yesterday, and of course I needed a bigger memory card, because the game takes more than the usual memory cards worth of space.I went to Fry's Electronics and saw this one that was 1000 blocks, where the only other one there only had 251 blocks and it was 3 dollars more expensive.I now see why.I put my memory card in.Transferred some game stats to it from another card, and started my season of baseball. After the first game I saved it.When I went out of the season mode, and came back in 15 minutes later, it called said the memory was corrupt and needed to be formatted. This was after only playing one game.I don't consider that very reliable even if it was suggested that there might be overheating or other issues. So for the third day in a row I will be going back to the store tomorrow to return. What a waste of time.Do not buy under any circumstance.Based on these messages I am not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Problems Here
I have had the Mega Memory 16x for almost a year and it never gave me any problems. Wel, one minor problem, but it can be avoided. When I play my Madden 04 franchise, after a game I save and it says the file is corrupted, so I simply save the franchise again. As long as I have the corrupted file on the card, it never corrupts again! People with corruption problems, try just leaving the corrupted file on the card (don't erase it!) It worked for me, and it should work for you. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Spider-Man: The Movie brings your friendly neighborhood web slinger to life with engrossing realism, proving that a superhero game of such complex nature can be achieved with nearly flawless and nonintrusive gameplay. Be it wandering the city's environs in search of villains, or just checking out your surroundings by web-swinging high above them, you truly can do whatever Spider-Man can. It's all here: high-flying aerial battles, the ability to web up and yank your enemies close for pummeling, and the capacity for crawling or web-zipping up, down, and over any surface--and that's just for starters. All in all, this is one involved game that does not fail to live up to the hype.

The game parallels the motion picture's story line, steering you through a progression of challenges that begins with the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer, and ends with a final showdown with the Green Goblin. You begin as Peter Parker dressed in his wrestling costume and must defeat a variety of thugs throughout each level before advancing to the next set of challenges. The game gets progressively tougher as you encounter, in turn, Shocker, the Vulture, Scorpion, and, of course, the Green Goblin.

Visually, Spider-Man is a treat: cityscapes unfold in realistic detail and are enhanced by sunlight shining between buildings; cutscenes offer seamless animation; interiors are painstakingly re-created; and Spider-Man and his enemies are well rendered, moving about the screen in clean fashion. As an added bonus, most characters are voiced by their movie counterparts, and the training mode features the sarcastic wit of Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. --Larry White

Pros:

  • Detailed controls bring Spider-Man to life
  • Challenging gameplay enhanced by numerous fight styles
  • Stunning visuals at every level
Cons:
  • Camera angles slow to respond at times
  • Some interiors too dark
  • Repetitive one-liners

2-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic
This game isn't nearly worth what I payed for it. The camera for the game is backwords and you can't fix it, and it has other camera glitches that get very irritating. I decided to get a cheat so I could play the last level instead of wasting my time, but five minutes looking for the cheat wasn't worth playing the last level. I beat spider-man 1 for the playstation 1 at least 7 times and I would recommend it instead of spider-man the movie if you have a playstation 1. (...)

its waaaaaaay to simple it takes 5 minute a mission thats 5 times 22 it equals 110 minutes of gameplay that not even two hours.even oon hard mode its simple.Im sorry i just dont understand why it got peoples choice but i hate it. but the graphics are all right and the fighting is all right thats why it got 2 stars. 5-0 out of 5 stars best console ever?
This review is not particuarly for the "Smoke" edition, I own the basic black one with grey controller which isn't listed at Amazon.

I bought one when PS II and Gamecube were already on the market after played a friends N64for a couple of months.
Great games! I always thought Playstation was the console to have, but when I checked the games for both consoles I bought a N64 straightaway.
When you look at the best games for both systems (a top 10, if you like) the N64 has the best games:

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Perfect Dark
GoldenEye 007
Super Mario 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Donkey Kong 64
Banjo-Tooie
Paper Mario

Ofcourse playstation has great games: Metal Gear Solid, Tombraider, Gran Turismo, Medal of Honor, Tekken 3, but no adventure game comes close to the Zelda games and there isn't a platform game on the playstation that matches Banjo, Mario and Donkey Kong 64.
Gran turismo is a great race game, but I don't like racers that much. And Tekken is a...fighting game...enough said.

And imagine a Playstation that will not load scratched discs or freezes for no reason at all.
Playstation looks better at first sight, but isn't that good build.
N64 is very well built and the game cartridges (cassettes) last forever.

The N64 controller looks ugly, but its handling is superb...blahdieblah.
This console made me go for the Gamecube and not the PS II or Xbox.
Overall this is the best console made, Gamecube still has to proove itself in my opion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 3rd generation of nintendo.
I have only had this system for 2 years but I already have 12 or 11 games. My personal favorite The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Don't forget the N64 was the King of gaming sytems.
It sure beat PS1 in Grapics and Audio sound but it lost in Game
selection. I do agree with most of my N64 comrades that this system is more for younger gamers but thats Ok with me since I
have 4 younger sisters. Sure I would like a PS2 or Gamecube but
N64 is a good all around system. I got the system with an Atomic purple controller and a normal grey controller. I really want 4 more games before you can't find games in stores anymore.
I really want Majora's Mask the 2nd Zelda game for the N64.
Today I was at the Mall when I saw a kid with 3 N64 games I couldn't believe he had bought that many games from the same store since N64 games are hard to find. If anybody reads this review and you have a N64 in your closet and your playing your
PS2 switch them and play some classic N64. Let your PS2 fell
the neglect that your N64 gets all the time. Since you'll stick your PS2 in closet to play PS3 one day if a PS3 ever comes out.
I hope my review was helpful.

Editorial Review

A first-person shooter that mixes spy and sci-fi, PerfectDark is both a thoroughly engrossing one-player experience and ariotously fun multiplayer romp. Easily one of the best games of itsgenre on any video game console, this long-awaited follow-up toGoldenEye 007 is a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners--and a damngood reason to be one if you're not.

The futuristic Perfect Dark casts players as Joanna Dark, asecret agent who becomes embroiled in a sinister conspiracy involvingaliens and an evil corporation. Gameplay is broken down into missions, each with objectives that must be unerringly completed beforeprogressing to the next mission. This is not your typical kill-anything-that-movesgame: putting a bullet in the wrong person, not keeping theright one alive, or perforating a seemingly unimportant inanimate objectcan often result in mission failure.

While Perfect Dark's solo missions play out much like those inGoldenEye 007, the game's fantastic multiplayer options areanother matter entirely. Cooperative and counteroperative simultaneous-playmodes allow for another player to join in on a mission as,respectively, a teammate or the enemy. However, the real fun here is inthe highly customizable Combat Simulator, a one-to-four-playersimultaneous-play mode that features both free-for-alls and team-basedchallenges and can include up to eight Simulants, computer-controlledcombatants of varying behavior.

Although Simulants make for decent adversaries or teammates, you'll wantto grab a friend--and an Expansion Pak, as only 35 percent of the gameis available without one--to fully enjoy Perfect Dark. --JoeHon

Pros:

  • One of the best first-person shooters on any video game console
  • Outstanding multiplayer game with huge replay value
  • Bevy of game options, cheats, and secret features
  • Excellent training mode with challenges all of its own
Cons:
  • Graphics get ugly when playing with more than two players

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Good
I have a rather large collection of N64 games, and still play them. This is one of those games that, even with the breadth of first person shooters available today, still stands out on it's own.Improving on the Golden Eye engine, you're given plenty of imaginative weapons to work with, from the Farsight gun that shoots through walls, to machine gun that allows you to cloak yourself, there's plenty of toys to go around.

The one player campaign is filled with replay value, especially with co-op and "counter-agent" options, allowing another player to either play a mission with or against you.Same format from Golden Eye exists here: easy, medium and hard difficulty levels with rewards for completing each.

The multiplayer does suffer a bit in terms of graphics, but the fact that you have so many options, from adding simulants, to changing the format of the game (team mode, death match, capture the flag, etc.), to customizing your level weapons, makes up for this.

Wisely, Rare placed some unlockable features from the Goldeneye games, including guns and multiplayer levels.Other secrets include hidden levels, cheats, etc.

In short, this has to be high on the "must" list for anyone who still plays N64 games.

For the sake of parents buying this for children, I will note there is some occasional cussing (guards sometimes yell "what the h***" when they see you), but this can be turned off on the options screen.Animated blood can also be turned off.By and large this is incredibly tame compared to what passes for "M" rated now, but it should be noted.

I'm not gonna go all deep in explenation, so just take my work , it's easy, fun, and affordable, so give it a shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,but
Okay, the game is very addicting. The sound, graphics, gameplay is all great! But I discoverd something else funer. Super Mario 64 DS. That game is way better. This game is good but that game is something you can't keep your eyes off. Remember when you finish the game and eyerything to do and ther'es nothing left to do, well this DS game has mini games. They are very addicting and fun! You can draw on this as well. The adventure mode takes longer folks. You can play as Yoshi,Luigi,Mario Wario. In The beginning of Super Mario 64,you could just walk in. But thwe DS version is different. You have to collect a rabbit to get in. There is more room's in this castle too with more levels. Instead of collecting 120 stars. You have to collect 150. If you don't have enogh money for a DS and the game but have a N64,dust off the original and have some fun. Or go out and buy your DS and game. Get whatever. You have to play this though. If you don't think I'm right, then you will be sorry. ... Read more

Limited Edition Platinum Game Boy Advance

Editorial Review

This is a special limited-edition, platinum-colored Game Boy Advance console.

When you first pick up the Game Boy Advance system, you'll be amazed at how little it weighs. At fewer than 5 ounces and a little larger than a deck of playing cards, the system easily fits into a shirt pocket without any sag. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands. The former design too often pushed the left and right thumb knuckles together during gameplay. The new layout is comfortable for all ages, and the center screen orientation makes it easy to see.

Game Boy Color owners will find the GBA's larger screen somewhat darker than they're used to, but that's because the screen is outfitted with antiglare technology. Like the old Game Boy Color, the color LCD is not backlit, so you need pretty good light to play by. Unlike that system, though, you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the hot-spot reflection of the light bulb in your screen.

But you'll also notice the graphics. Sporting what's basically a redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that you see on big consoles, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to throwing a touchdown pass to crawling through a dungeon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gameboy Rules!
First of all,I want to make it clear that I'm not giving this 5 stars because it's platinum but because it's gameboy.I would have given it 5 stars if it was blue, too. The point is that I just love gameboy.I have a GBC too and I still love it as much as I love my GBA.If anyone was ever going to get a game console,I'd reccomend a GBA.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
this was a realy cool hand held system especially if your playing Golden Sun 1 & 2

5-0 out of 5 stars Game Boy Advance Review
This is the greatest handheld system over. The game are cool because they come all other consoles too. I mean like there making the PS2 hit Grand Theft Auto 3 for GBA, Super Monkey Ball Jr. from Gamecube, and ect. It has a 32-bit processor and GBC only has a 8-bit processor. There are some sick accessories now so you can turn it into a tv, digital camera, mp3 player, radio, and more. You have to get this. The top 10 games are * Super Monkey Ball jr. * Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 * Golden Sun * Mega Man Battle Network 2 * Zelda:A link to the past * Crash Banticoot: The Huge Adventure * Crash Banticoot 2: N-Tranced * Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder * Spider-Man : The Movie * Mat-Hoffman's Pro BMX You have to get this thing now. p.s. Game Boy Advance SP is coming March '03 so you might want to wait for that. I hope you really invest in a GBA and a light you won't be sorry. ... Read more

Super Mario World

Editorial Review

Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo sits at or near the topof most "best video games" lists for a reason. At the time of its release, itwas a dramatic evolution of the side-scrolling Mario series of action-adventuregames, incorporating every gameplay element that worked in the older titleswhile adding a seemingly endless supply of new tricks. This new feature-completeversion of Super Mario World for the Game Boy Advance proves just howtimeless designer Shigeru Miyamoto's 1991 classic really is.

In true Miyamoto fashion, the game starts with simple running and jumping andgradually gets more complex. Soon, you're swimming, flying, tossing fireballs, and riding one of several Yoshis--cute little dinosaurs--that appear throughoutthe game. The overall level design has yet to be exceeded in a 2-D platformer, with each colorful level packed with enough secrets to keep players busy forweeks. A lot of precision jumping is required, but the controls are so tightthat directing Mario (or even Luigi, who wasn't playable in the original)becomes as natural as breathing within a few minutes of playing.

As if packing the entire original game onto the tiny cartridge wasn't enough,Nintendo also put two multiplayer versions of the original Mario Brothersin there, which are playable solo or with up to three other people usingGame Link cables to connect all your Game Boy Advance systems. Both variants are a blast, but thesingle-player adventure is what kept us coming back for more. If you missed it10 years ago when Super Mario World appeared on the Super Nintendo, don'tmake the same mistake twice. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • The game is very replayable thanks to multiple level exits
  • Surgically precise controls
  • Outstanding level designs that never get old
Cons:
  • Speech effects that were added for Mario and Luigi get old fast

Features

  • rld. When riding Yoshi, Mario or Luigi can make their dino pal slurpup enemies, regurgitate fireballs and carry special items.
  • Like any Mario game, Super Mario World is crawling with secrets. In addition to hidden blocks and vines within the levels, many levels feature hidden exits which take a lot of exploration to discover. Finding these hidden exits is the only way to explore all 96 levels in the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Polishing a classic
There's pretty much a debate on the best Super Mario game: Super Mario 3, Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island(but you control Yoshi instead). Some might say Mario 64 but the lack of gameplay moves doesn't hold a candle to the many gameplay mechanics each one of the 3 provide. So we delve into one of them: Super Mario World.

Story: What little story there is. As usual, Princess Peach gets kidnapped(I swear that b**** needs bodyguards or take up karate or something). So it's up to Mario to save the day as he traverses worlds in caves, the chocolate level, underwater and in the air.

Graphics: This is Super Nintendo graphics so granted these aren't stunning anymore. But it does have a nice vibrancy to it and the variety of the levels adds some nice changes to the scenery without being too repetitive.

Sound/Music: I often call Nintendo good support music. Besides the Mario theme, nothing is really hummable yet it doesn't feel out of place. They added some voices for Mario and Luigi which as usual get annoying.

Gameplay: I remember playing this on the SNES and I was so happy I cleared all 96 stages, got the Star Road finished, the secret areas and everything. Now I have to do it again, ugh. All the levels are here with some minor tweaks.

It was this one I believe they introduced one of Mario's famous sidekicks: Yoshi, the green dinosaur who likes to eat anything and s**t it out and makes eggs that he can fling at people(only in Yoshi's Island and maybe some others). He also turned into a different colored Yoshi depending on what he ate. So red turtles gave him abilities to shoot fireballs while one enabled him to fly and another gave a slight earthquake quality when he bounced.

Mario 3 wins in turns of transforming Mario. In 3, he had the tanooki suit(that raccoon), the frog suit, that shoe, not to mention the fire flower and the leaf, capable of making him fly. With this one he gets the fire flower and the feather, giving him a yellow Superman cape where he can fly. It's different than the leaf cause that just made him soar straight up while here you can fly across. He can glide down by just holding the button while in 3 you had to repeatedly hit it.

The Mario Advance ports are great for us old school gamers who remembers playing Chrono Trigger, Uniracers and Final Fantasy III(officially VI but that's another story). Don't forget about Mario 3 and Yoshi's Island too.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an old classic, but it cannot overshadow Mario Bro 3
The game is good and then some. There is so much to do, you may never do it all.
The story is that Peach is not in the witness protection program and gets kidnapped once again. You and Luigi must save her.
On the map you can alternate between Luigi and Mario just by a press of a button. All in all, it does not matter. The game is no harder or easier. Luigi has a better jump but is slower than Mario.
In the levels your goal is to get to the end without dying. The twist in this game is that any red dot on the map means there is more than one exit. And many of them are hard to find. Upon finding them, you are able to gain access to a different path on the map.
This is a must. You will see dotted lines everywhere in a certain color. What you must do is find a certain special exit and you get to go to a block palace. They will fill in the lines with blocks that match the colors. Now these blocks give you access to new places and sometimes save your life.
Running around in the levels, you get four different powerups and they vary from mushroom to stars. If you had Mario before, you know what they do. The new addition is Yoshi. He can add an extra hit to your life and eat enemies and more! Plus, by special exits, you can go to star world. Beating a level there the right way will give you access to a new yoshi. Some will turn enemies eaten into fire while others can fly when they have any enemy in their mouth. They appear at random
The bosses can be brutal. Each boss either has three or four hits. You must find the special way to beat them. This will be easy, but causes you to keep readjusting throughout the game.
You may never do everything.
You need help to do everything. So buy a strategy guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Game EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
For a gamer like me, that is, someone who likes basic yet chalenging games, this is a must. Its fun never wears away, because there's always something new to do.Play either as Mario, who is fast but a bad jumper, or Luigi who jumps far and high.I love this game!!!!!!!! ... Read more

Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure marks the first time Crash has appeared on a handheld system. The game contains 20 levels and features six unique locations that take Crash from the Mayan jungle to frigid Arctic caverns. Gameplay modes include side-scrolling, 3-D chase levels and aerial dogfight combat sequences. Crash is once again pitted against his archnemesis, the evil Dr. Neo Cortex. Orbiting high above Earth, Cortex has decided to abandon his fixation on our hero and redirect his evil focus to world domination. Using his latest invention, a massive shrinking ray, Cortex takes aim and fires at Earth, shrinking the planet to the size of a grapefruit. Luckily, Crash's brilliant kid sister Coco is feverishly working on a machine to reverse the effects, but she needs crystals from around the world to power her invention. It is up to Crash to retrieve the crystals and help return the entire planet to its natural state. ... Read more

It will keep your kids busy for at least a month.Easier than Wrath of Cortex.Pretty good for a GBA game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super, but they can do better.
When ever a psone game hit's a new console it allways forget's something's.This game is the same thing. It was a great hit but they forgot a lot of important things. The game is called "The Huge Adventure" so you might think that the game is really big.WRONG!The game is super small.I can finished it a 100% in a maximum time of 6 hour's.Well the game is preety much the same as crash 2 and warped.Like the space, rocket, bike and underwater levels are from crash warped, amd the icy cave, polar ride, jungle and drain levels are from crash 2.The boss aren't different either.Like Tiny,N.Gin and cortex are from Crash 2, while Dingondile is from Crash warped. The other thing is that in the past Crash games there were in a total of 25 crystal's.While in this game there's only 20 crystal's.Allso in the past games of crash except crash 1, there were 5 boss. But in this game there's only 4, without the monster.Anyway's here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
Gameplay is really cool 10/10
Nice graphics9.6/10
Sounds,excellent10/10
If you're a Crash fan you'll like the music8.9/10

Cons:
TOO SHORT!
Not enough boss
Forgot a lot of things from the past crash games, but since this is crash's first gba game it's ok.

In an overall is games great and is a must to buy, but you'll finish it quickly.Get the game right away if you're a crash fan.If not rent it first. But still i say that get the game if i were you.

Editorial Review

Golden Sun is the first original role-playing game for the GameBoy Advance to appear in the U.S. And despite perhaps a too-familiar story line,Golden Sun's jaw-dropping graphics, deep magic system, and uniquemultiplayer arena mode truly show that the Game Boy Advance is capable of aserious RPG.

Game developer Camelot (which also made the legendary Shining Force series forthe Sega Genesis, and, more recently,Mario Golf andMario Tennis for theNintendo 64) designed Golden Sun from the ground up to take advantage ofthe GBA's horsepower, and it shows. Sharp, vivid landscapes, detailed towns anddungeons, and awesome weather effects--it looks like a Super Nintendo game withsome extra zing squeezed onto a handheld system. Fans of Secret of Manaor Chrono Trigger will appreciate the feel of this game.

But the game's greatest strength is its magic system. Your characters each havetheir own latent psychic abilities based on one of the four elements of alchemy(earth, water, wind, and fire). The characters will be called upon to use theirindividual forms of telepathy and telekinesis to solve various puzzles in thegame. Also, you can collect Djinn (elemental spirits) and link them to yourcharacters. Not only can these Djinn be summoned in battle, they can alsobolster or hinder your characters' latent psychic abilities, give them specialattacks, and even change your characters' class. This system is similar toFinal Fantasy VIII's guardian system, though far more intuitive and easyto master.

Golden Sun employs a basic turn-based battle system, but it has amazingspell and fighting techniques that really take advantage of the GBA'stechnology. The game achieves a nice balance between flashy attacks and thebrevity of these same attacks--a lesson the makers of other RPGs should learn.Battles are beautifully and quickly fought, and don't overtax the gamer.

The game also has an addictive arena mode in which players can fight monstersthey've already encountered in the game. Players can also link up with anotherGBA (this feature requires another Golden Sun cartridge) and fightagainst another party. While it's not true a multiplayer option, it adds a greatreplay value to the game.

Golden Sun's weakest point, however, is its standard-issue story. Inessence: boy wakes up amidst disaster, meets stalwart friends, and rises to thechallenge to save the day (all while living up to the image of his dear departedfather). The story is a little stale, but the mechanics of the game transcendthis flaw and bring the gamer into a state of handheld nirvana. --BryanKarsh

Pros:

  • Vivid graphics
  • Deep, intuitive magic system
  • Addictive multiplayer arena mode

  • A plot straight out of "RPG Story Lines 101"

5-0 out of 5 stars Good...but too short
I know they're leaving room for a sequal, but I finished in about a week of real time, and I didn't play that much.Plus, since you're stuck in Lalivero after you beat the final battle, there's no replay value.Although it left me eagerly awaiting the second one, it also left me feeling a little cheated. However, overall, this is an awesome game. The storyline didn't bother me, because the number of sideplots the ever-altruistic Isaac and crew feel the need to indulge in kept things varied and fun.Overall, I highly recommend this game, but if you're getting it, buy Lost Age at the same time, or you'll be really mad when you finish.Me?I'm promising myself Lost Age as a reward after I finish Finals Week, and I'm counting the days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Any RPG loving GBA owner should buy this.
Created by a little know developer called Camelot (they made some Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games, as well as Shining Force before they joined Nintendo), Golden Sun is one of the GBA's more exceptional games.

Golden Sun has one major achievement it had for the GBA.It pushed the limits of the system in terms of graphics. While the visuals for wandering around seem rather easy for the system to create, the battles are a spectacular achievement.Even though the characters and enemies are shown as animated sprites. The sprites themselves are not much to write home about, but regardless they are quite convincing and suit the battle setup more than you might expect. The battle screen is sort of a "quasi-3D" setup. The background and sprites are 2D, but they are executed in such a manner that they look 3D.Not only that, battle effects, such as spells and simple attacks, add wonderfully to the setup. The only real problem I can see is that some spell effects slow down the framerates (how fast or smoothly it runs) noticably, but it's all handled so well that it doesn't even seem like a glitch, and out of sheer irony it adds to the effect of some of the spells.

The sound is a mixed bag.The music score part is excellent.Everything from the main menu music, to town themes, and the grand world map music is great both technically and melodically. If any songs do get on your nerves, they either won't last long or are done in such a way that you can tune them out while playing.Sound effects, however, are very standard.A lot of them are recycled so much that it's practically mind numbing. However, none of it seems completely out of place, and there isn't much that will hurt your ears, so that's something to be happy for.

The gameplay itself only has one real flaw in my opinion. The battles are too easy. With the exception of most of the boss battles, regular battles tend to be so easy that the thought of using the run option will never occur to you (they also go so quick that there's not really a time issue involved either). There's also an issue where, if you set all of your characters to attack one enemy and that enemy is destroyed, the characters that attack him later have their attack wasted. This really isn't too much of an issue, though, and Camelot was smart enough to make the character automatically defend if that should happen (which means damage to that character would be halved... though I think that only refers to physical damage).

The story has gotten a lot of bad press in my opinion. However, it should be noted that if you play this game, the story alone may persuade you to buy the next game, GS: The Lost Age (which is already out). While that's not particularly a bad thing, as the combination of the two stories is really awesome, just be aware of the extra expense that may cost for your wallet. Also, it should be noted that this game is a bit on the short side (roughly 20-25 hours), but that's still not much of an issue in my view (just so you know, the second game in the series is roughly 40-45 hours long, so that one is lengthier).

All in all, the game is quite fun. However, there are a few quirks that I mentioned above that may get on some people's nerves, so just know what you're getting into. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One warning for you GBA owners
Nintendo advertises this cable to allow 4 people to play together off of one pack. Absolutely not a 100% true. Certain games such as NHL 2002, and other sports games, each player must have a pack to be able to connect. Many parents have found this out all too late on road trips and what not. Make sure you read the warning on the back of the game and instructions to see what you need for multiplayer gaming. (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars a major disappointment
i am a 45 year aerospace engineer and I can't get this piece of junk to work, even after re-reading the poor instructions several times.after messing around with it for a while, it finally does allow two GBAs to link, but its almost as if by accident...

save your money for a gamecube instead...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good accessory
With Nintendo's new Game Boy Advance came a new kind of link cable, one that was exclusively for the advance systems. Read on for the pros and cons of this accessory.

PROS:
-You can use it for multiplayer gaming and trading in some games, sometimes with only one game
-Up to three cables can be connected at a time, meaning up to four people can play at a time
-It's more durable than third-party accessories that do the same thing

CONS:
-It only works for Advance games. If you've got two Advance systems and want to link up on a Game Boy Color game, you'll need one of the older link cables.
-As another reviewer stated, the color scheme of the cable isn't too pleasing
-Third party accessories that perform the same functions are available for a lower price

If you've got a Game Boy Advance, make sure you buy one of these, as it is somewhat of a necessity. ... Read more
