As you progress through the 1-Player mode, more features will be unlocked, such as new stages, new characters, and ways to alter the way characters look. In multi-player mode, you get to play with the characters you have found (5 original, 3 hidden) in the stages you have accessed (annoying for people who just play games for the multi-player modes). One of the things I didn't really care for in Rayman Arena is that in 1-Player mode, the challenges can get somewhat boring since the same challenges are in every stage. Also, the 1-Player mode is not very long. Let's put it this way:It's better to receive Rayman Arena as a gift than to buy it yourself.

Rayman 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (02 February, 2001) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Five years ago, the 3-D platform genre was exciting, as titleslike Crash Bandicoot and Mario 64 ruled the consoleroost. Since then, we have seen the 3-D platform genre fill out with afew copycats and some outright stinkers. However, there have been a fewclassics in the intervening years, such as Banjo-Tooie, and nowRayman 2: Revolution can join the club. Like past installments, Rayman 2: Revolution borrows gameplayelements from a variety of different sources, but they are sourcesworth borrowing from. Several elements from Rayman 2: The GreatEscape have been pilfered, including a similar story line.Revolution has a good combination of beautiful graphics, greatcontrols, and enhanced gameplay. This will astound both hard-coregamers and those new to the hobby. There is enough puzzle solving, lever pulling, item collecting, and platform jumping to keep even themost ardent platform enthusiast busy for quite some time. The pirate Admiral Razorbeard and his army of robots have enslaved theplanet, and it's your job in Revolution to help Rayman searchfor pieces of the Primordial Core and summon Polokus to get rid of therobotic pirates. The levels are even the same as they were in TheGreat Escape, although there have been some slight changes made tothe order in which they appear. Due to the power of the PS2 and thedetail put into reworking the levels for the game, they lookspectacular. Ubi Soft has mixed old-school gameplay with graphicspower, and those ingredients mixed together make this game a must-playfor gamers of all ages. Despite the borrowed elements from The Great Escape,Revolution for the PS2 offers up plenty of new things that willmake the hearts of platform gamers skip a beat, just like when theyfirst played Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot. It looks likethis time, Rayman will finally get the respect he deserves. --ToddMowatt Pros:

Many people keep saying that this game isn't any good because it's not as nice looking as Jak & Daxter nor a fun as Spyro or Crash and I would have to agree. One reason for this is that Rayman is not these games, but nonetheless it's a wonderful gaming experience.I know this is a first gen PS2 title and there are tons of better looking games on the market, but I would have to say that I really liked the atmosphere and environments of Rayman. The game was a little slow moving at first but if you have a little patience the intensity of the game will beging to increase as well as the fun factor. It may seem a little childish at times, which to me was fine, but if you need a little more maturity you can always slap GTA3 into your PS2 and get your fix. I gave this game a 4 instead of a 5 for a couple reasons; which seemed minor in the beginning but became very frustrating as the game progressed. The were as follows: 1. The constant loading and then asking you if you want to save was very very annoying, probably the worst I have ever experienced. There are times when you will come out of loading and then go thru a door or down a path and immediately be asked to save or continue and then the game would start to load again.I know this may sound like I'm overreacting, but when you have to go back and forth between areas, this becomes a real pain in the A**... real fast. 2.There is quite a bit of aliasing (jaggies) during the game although it is not overwhelming it is noticeable. 3.The voice acting was subpar and low in volume. There were times when I just couldn't make out what the heck the characters were talking about or what my next mission objective was. Overall this game is a solid experience and ,especially at the new reduced price, a solid PS2 purchase. It may not be the flashiest or most original title on the market, but what it lacks in luster in makes up in spades with consistency.

Rayman Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (23 September, 1999) list price: $54.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Many of the games in the budget-priced Greatest Hitsseries are showing their age, but Rayman's old-school 2-Dtechnology ironically gives it an edge in terms of longevity. This stillis one of the most beautiful, fun, and imaginative side-scrollingplatform jumping games ever released. You control the now-famous Rayman, a strange character with no arms orlegs (although he has feet and hands) and a propeller on his head. Somemay look at this as just another game where players run around and jumpall the time, but the charming graphics and incredibly tight controlselevate Rayman into special territory. The difficulty level isjust right at the beginning, letting players get a feel for Rayman'sbasic moves. Later levels require more advanced tricks and precisejumps, but the game is never unfair--something few 2-D side-scrollinggames can claim. If you can get past the too-cute graphics and see themfor the lush, imaginative visuals they are, the gameplay should keep youhooked for days. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Rayman 2 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (05 November, 1999) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Rayman 2 follows in the footsteps of Mario 64 andBanjo-Kazooie as another classic 3-D action game for theNintendo 64. Rayman, who is strangely huge in France, is a strangeyellow creature with hands and feet that are magically connected to hisbody by invisible appendages. This odd character can glide like ahelicopter and throw his fists around as well as jump, climb, and swim.As in any decent action jumping game, Rayman meets up with many friendsand enemies on his quest. Your mission is to rescue hostages held bythe vile Robo-Pirates. The game has an odd cinematic feel to it--perhaps due to its widescreenpresentation and cutscenes.A cute feature is the design of thecharacters, who speak in their own forms of cute gibberish.Graphically, this game is rich with deep dark colors spread out over 50levels and 20 worlds.Hiding in these levels are colored "lums" thatcan be used to open up new worlds or to restore Rayman's energy. Thesecome in handy when you want to breathe underwater for long periods oftime. Rayman must also collect magic masks and crystals, among othergoodies. --Robb Guido Pros:

Rayman 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (24 March, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Rayman 2: The Great Escape packs more charm and surprisesin a single level than most games can muster in their entire length. This 3-Dplatformer is designed in the same vein as Super Mario 64 for theNintendo 64and the Gex serieson the PlayStation. With the notable exception of SonicAdventure, Dreamcast owners have suffered through a dry spell whenit comes to action jumping games on the 128-bit system. Rayman 2was worth the wait. The back of the case describes Rayman 2's graphics as "lush," butthat may be an understatement. The game's environments and effects areimpressive. We were awed by the amount of detail that has been designedinto many of the game's environments. Perhaps more amazing is that thegame suffers no slowdown despite the high-resolution visuals. Pretty graphics aside, Rayman 2 delivers solid gameplay that willsuck in both casual and hardcore gamers. The controls are intuitive andspecial moves are easy to pull off. Rayman has a limited set ofmoves--basically he can run, jump, and shoot energy balls. Analog speed controlis fully implemented, letting users pounce through a field ofbutterflies or tiptoe around a sleeping guard. Several puzzles arescattered throughout the game, but they are so ingeniously designed thatyou'll never feel overwhelmed by their complication. We were hard-pressed to come up with many drawbacks to this game. Oneslight flaw is the camera angle, which can sometimes interfere with yourability to accurately control the on-screen action. Fortunately, thiscan usually be amended with a few quick presses of the camera controlbuttons. Other than that, Rayman 2 is as good as it gets in thisgenre. Better still, Dreamcast owners get a special bonus: this versioncontains some extra levels you won't find anywhere else. If you havemultiple systems, this is the version to get. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

Rayman 2: The Great Escape Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (03 September, 2000) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ubi Soft's Rayman character is the Rodney Dangerfield of action-platformcharacters. While smart, funny, and very hip, the poor little guy just can't getany respect from most gamers. It's hard to see why, as the little guy hasstarred in some of the finest platformers (both 2-D and 3-D) gaming has seen insome time. Basically a direct port of the incredible Nintendo 64, PC, and Dreamcastversions, the PlayStation's RayMan 2: The Great Escape has a lot goingfor it. Great gameplay, amazing visuals, and outstanding sound all combine tomake this platform title kick butt. As the Rayman 2: The Great Escapestory goes, evil mechanical pirates, led by Razorbeard, have enslaved theinhabitants of Rayman's world. You must help Rayman collect four magical masksto wake up a god who will make those pirates walk the plank. Rayman 2: The Great Escape is a lot of fun, and as you make your waythrough the adventure, you must pick up fragments of energy called "lums." Alongthe way, you will also be required to free cute characters that have been put incages and enslaved by the evil pirates. There is plenty of eye candy in Rayman 2: The Great Escape, the upbeatmusic is a joy to listen to, and the voice work is one of the best parts of thegame. The control scheme is very intuitive, which is essential for anyplatformer. It's very easy to pick up, but even the best gamer will still lovemastering the environments. Rayman 2: The Great Escape is one of the best platform games ever madefor the PlayStation. The game is challenging and addictive, and will appeal togamers of all skill levels. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

Rayman Average Customer Review: Video Game (08 June, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Rayman Advance is perhaps the first must-play Game BoyAdvance game available. It's a full conversion of the PlayStationclassic brought to life in vivid detail with level-by-leveloptimizations; gorgeous graphics; large, detailed, well-animatedcharacters; and that patented Rayman gameplay Ubi Soft has beendelivering for years now. Those unfamiliar with the character and story should expect yet anothercute take on the 2-D side-scrolling adventure game, but Rayman easilystands alongside Mario in terms of brilliance. Rayman, a cute,big-nosed guy with pompadour bangs and an infectiously upbeat attitude, isthe Guardian of the World. Oddly, he has hands and feet but no arms orlegs to support them. That doesn't stop him from doing his thing, however. His powers include jumping, clinging to ledges, using his earsas a helicopter, and, most importantly, punching. A helpful fairy dolesout these powers to you as you complete tasks and progress in the game.Rayman's task, as usual, is to defeat enemies and free creatures(called Toons) caught in great iron boxes. Also, Rayman collects"tings," which he can use to barter with magicians as he rids hisbizarre little world of oppression from the likes of colorful bossesMoskito and big, bad Space Mama. The most striking features of Rayman Advance are its graphicsand gameplay. The design is extremely creative; there are tons ofthings to bounce on, ride, and grab, and plenty of other tricks to do.It's the sort of game that always has you doing something new, which isno mean feat considering it spans 60 levels. Rayman is a first-rate 2-Dplatform game for all ages. Hey, pardon the pun, but, well, everyoneloves Rayman. --Andrew S. Bub Pros:

The Clock People work all day and all night, to keep the tower turning, running. Yellow faded glasses strapped to their heads with leather bands, dirty overalls, dirty jackets, all brown with dust. They hammer and pound pins into cogs to keep the time from stopping. The clocks face glows, illuminates the town beneath it, but it's dark as night on the inside; dark and dusty.
