    Editorial Review

This talking book comes with an interactive "magic pen" that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as "Strike one!" for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games.--Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I would pick this over the writer's Leappad
I have both a LeapPad+Writing and regular LeapPad like this one, and I can honestly say that the extra writing feature is not worth the extra money.Stick with the LeapPad regular and get a lot of LeapPad readers.Make sure that you don't buy this if you have babies that tear things up, though. My son has all the LeapPad books, but half of them are unsalvageable because of my toddler that likes to chew on EVERYTHING.The LeapFrog customer service is awesome, though... they have replaced my books for $10 each so I don't have to go out to buy new ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Toy I have ever bought
I bought a pink and purple LeapPad for my daughter when she was three for Christmas. She is five now and still plays with it every single day. Everytime a birthday or Christmas rolls around she asks for more LeapPad books. This toy has been a godsend during car and plane trips, hotel and restaurant entertainment, and any other situation when children need to sit still.

She has learned the alphabet, numbers, spelling, and reading from countless hours on this pad. She owns several books and each get used all the time. I think this is honestly the best toy invented in a long time. She has been able to figure it out because it is well thought out for the young user. They can hit the stop button with the pen to stop it, or hit the Go button to continue each story. Each book also has games and other activities, so they are well worth the money. It is impossible for my daughter to get bored with it because each book is countless hours of reading, games, music, and excitement.

I encourage all parents of young children to buy this LeapPad. It is well worth the money. It is a toy that they will not grow out of in a short amount of time because the books range in ages.It is not only educational but very durable. Our LeapPad has been dropped countless times and is still intact. The only complaint I do have is that it tends to consume batteries quickly and you need a screw driver to take off the cover to put new ones in. Other than that, that is the only negative I have to say about the LeapPad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Toooo sloooowww for my boy
My boy has the attention span of a 4 year old. Why? Because he is 4 years old. He has no patience for the slow pace of age-appropriate leap pad materials. The learning games are too short, too slow, and too repetitive for him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year olds 1st real dollhouse
I bought this doll house for my four year old last year. She just loves it and it has horses too. She plays with her loving family all of the time. This is a great basic dollhouse that folds up easily for storage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Toy I've Bought Yet
This is the first time I've gotten such good use out of a toy that I felt compelled to tell others about it.I bought this two years ago when my two girls were age 2 1/2 and 8 months. It was a great gift because I could put the accessories on my childrens' wish lists for the rest of the family to buy for Christmas, birthdays, etc.

My girls play with the dollhouse and/or the people almost every day! It's their favorite toy. It's made a great travel toy to take in the car, to church, camping, etc.as we can take just a few people/pieces on the road.It has been very interesting to see how my girls act out our family. It's excellent pretend play.Be sure to get the grandparents too.

My main suggestion is to buy extra sets of people.Fisher-Price changes the appearance of the people every few years and now I'm shopping for replacements on eBay.Also, they tend to get lost and they really are the most important part of the set.If you have more than one child, you'll want extra sets of people to avoid the fights anyway.

The stable tends to disconnect and the swing does fall off easily, but the fun my girls have had with this toy greatly offsets those tiny problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun

We've had this toy for four months and it has been played with quite a bit by our two preschoolers! However, the knife broke within the first week of use. The kids found a plastic play knife to use instead and don't seem to mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars my 20 month old son loves this toy
This set of little pieces of wooden food attached with velcro is endlessly interesting to my son, he plays with it at length and returns to it after other activities. We were somewhat concerned about the safety of hime using the wooden knife, but it seems blunt and curved enough to not be a danger.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is there a doctor in the house?
My now 5 year old got this toy for her 3rd birthday and she has not stopped playing with it-she loves to line up all her dolls and stuffed animals (sometimes even her 3 year old sister) in the "Waiting Room" to get their examinations and necessary shots. It is a MUST for any kid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for little ones!
We go to the doctor quite often so I knew my 2 year old would get a kick out of this. However, like the other reviews, the case should be bigger and a bit more durable. Also, my son doesn't like to use the put the stethoscope over his ears because they are too tight and hurt his ears. I tried it myself and it really does hurt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Durability & Value
I must have went to 5 different stores including my local Toys R Us in search of a "doctor kit" an none of the stores had one.I finally found one at a learning store for $17, but when I opened it the pieces were cheap plastic and didn't seem like it would last very long in the hands of my 2 yr old.I returned it and ordered this one on Amazon.com for a lot less and free shipping at the time.DS LOVES IT!It's Fisher Price, so you have an idea of the durable plastic. I fit all the pieces in the case without any trouble, so I don't know what all the complaints are about.I did put the body & eye charts away for when he's a little older since at this age he just wants to bend them, but that's not a big deal to me. I'm sure he'll be playing with this occasionally for years to come. This kit is just what I was hoping for.

P.S.- it arrived just 3 days after I ordered it -regular shipping!

    Lp Electronic School Bus

    Toy

    Editorial Review

School buses are colorful, noisy, and full of big kids--the ultimatemeasure of excitement for a baby or a toddler. This lightweight but sturdyplastic school bus measures just under a foot long and has smooth roundedcorners and real rolling wheels. Inside are two kids, a wheelchair for one toride in, and a bus driver. Push down on the bus driver for flashing lights, sound effects ("beep, beep!"), pronouncements from Carlos the bus driver("It's time for school!"), and a dual-tone version of the popular song,"The Wheels on the Bus." Getting the people in and out of the bus is easy.Open the door to let them aboard, or fold down the back hatch to create awheelchair ramp and entrance. The bus's open top and windows provideadditional access. Colorful, durable, and easy to play with, this is a goodpick for vehicle-loving tots. --Elisabeth Fredrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little toy
My son (16 mos) loves this toy and making the bus driver talk.He drives it around and plays with the little kids taking them in and out of the bus.It is well worth the 16 dollars I paid for it considering it is one of our most played with toys here.

5-0 out of 5 stars favorite little people toy
I think this is one of the best 'little people' vehicles as it is very easy for kids to put the people in and out, has a back door, front door and open top. There are extra seats for other 'little people' characters if you have them.My son was 2 when he got this toy and was really into school buses. He still likes it and so does my younger child. Its a great addition to other 'little people' sets and also great on its own.The only thing is you'll want to be careful you dont lose the driver as he is the only one shaped in a certain way to make all the sounds and lights when you push down on him in the drivers seat.Overall a great toy.

With both straight and curved tracks, connector tracks, and a repair shop, along with a bridge, a mill, and three Thomas & Friends trains (including Thomas himself), this Day at the Works train set comes with everything you need to enjoy an afternoon of wooden railway excitement. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for 18 months and up!But expensive...
The Thomas train and train collections are durable toys. Their real value, though, is that playing with the toys allows children to act out the great Thomas and Friends children's stories they read and watch.

This is a nice layout that provides far more track than the usual figure 8 layout that gets purchased first. It also provides a scenic mat, a tressle, and a building. But it is very expensive. There is generic track available that costs far less. Our kids haven't noticed the difference. IT IS EASY TO CREATE ELEVATED TRACK AND BRIDGES USING LEGO OR DUPLO PIECES AS SUPPORTS. GENERIC CRANES ARE AVAILABLE FOR MUCH LESS.

Kids' imaginations can remarkably supply buildings and water towers and cranes, etc., so that they won't even miss what might be lacking from less expensive sets. And families can build some of these items themselves out of old boxes, etc.

    Purchasing recommendation:
    * Choose which type of Thomas trains you will 'standardize' on. There are three kinds: This size of wooden trains from Learning Curve; larger, plastic, battery-operated trains from Tomy; and smaller, die-cast metal trains from Ertl. The wooden trains have the most products and accessories available.

    * The clickety-clack (grooved to look like real railroad) track in the Thomas series is great, but it's expensive; I recommend buying generic track. ... You can literally save hundreds of dollars by buying these kinds of sets.

    * Buy the Thomas and friends engines separately--and wait for sales. The kids care about the characters, so no short-cutting (ie., Brio or generic trains) here.

    * Look for trains bundled with VHS videos. You can get a video and a train (on sale) for about the same price as a train alone. ... Read more

    Classic BABY born Ethnic Doll

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Baby Born received the Dr. Toy Best Classic Toys Award for 2001.Children who love to play Mommy or Daddy will take special delight in parenting with German-made Baby Born as their offspring. From her dimpled knees and "outie" bellybutton to her individuallymolded toes, Baby Born is crafted in amazingly realistic detail from high-quality vinyl. Besides lookingmore like a real baby than most dolls, Baby Born performs seven bodily functions: she eats her cereal, drinks from her bottle, goes "potty," wets her diaper, sucks a pacifier, sheds tears, and cries--all without theaid of batteries. And she comes with everything you need to take care of her, including a potty, diaper, bottle, dish, spoon, and special cereal. Because she isn't battery powered, her "parents" will need to lend ahand with some of her digestive processes. Young children will need grownups to help them understand thethorough (and somewhat humorous) instructions. Baby Born received the Dr. Toy Best Classic Toys Award for 2001. --Lisa Whipple ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought this doll for my four year old daughter. I was looking for a Miracle Moves Doll, but I can't seem to find the ethnic ones in any store. My daughter saw me looking at dolls, and fell in love with this one. She doesn't know that it's supposed to do anything....because it doesn't. We tried giving the baby a bottle of water, but the doll didn't "drink." It makes no noise and is very hard. Her Miracle moves doll was wonderful until the skin on the face was torn off by another child. This doll is just a "stand in" until we can find her another interactive doll.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very Leaky Doll
I am 12 years old, and still love dolls. I had recently gotten some money as a gift, and begged my parents to take me to Toys R Us. When I had pursuaded them, they took me to the store, and I went straight to the doll isle. after browsing a while, I noticed that the older version of the baby born was on sale, so I decided to buy one. BIG mistake. When I got her home, I tried feeding her her bottle, but even when held at the right angle, water leaked through her neck. Also, when feeding her, I couldn't get the food through her body. I couldn't make her cry, and her "ability" to squeak and make child like noises turned out to be one of the simple squeakers that are found in most dog toys. Overall, this was a very disappointing purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The doll that grows with child....
This doll I got my daughter when she was 2 1/2...I know it's rated for 3. But I got it to help her potty learn, it really helped, she is now 5, and still plays with the doll, she dresses her, it's name is Kasey, we use premies diapers, and baby clothes, I highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic toy that is always a winner!!!
My 3 and 4 yr old daughters love this! It's one of the few toys they have, that kids of all ages will play with. They have a lot of cousins and this is the one toy that each and every one of them will play with.

I even catch myself grabbing a gob of playdough and creating something!!!The best thing about giving playdough as a present, is even if children already have this - they can always use more... and will have more to share with their friends!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Play-doh is a go-go!
I bought this gift for my little cousin.Although she opened dozens of gifts at her birthday party, this was the toy that all the kids flocked to - young and old alike.Heck, even I joined in on the fun. This set includes lots of new colors and fun accessories as well!Bottom line:a GUARANTEED great gift at an even greater deal!

She's able to whip up anything she wants. I was worried about the duribility of the doh press becuase i remember bending mine trying to push the play-doh through but it looks like they are making them out of a thicker plastic. Blue bounds into her first feature-length film ready to sing. She gets sidetracked along the way, of course, but that's part of thebrilliant Blue's Clues formula. Each half-hour TV show presents engaging, easy-to-grasp mini-mysteries that are within toddlers' reach. This timeBlue; her huge-eyed, slightly loopy human companion, Steve; and theircadre of talking-object friends are scurrying around, preparing for abackyard music show that day. Everybody picks a number to perform;Blue's is a duet with Tickety Tock, but the clock contracts laryngitis.Who will be Blue's new partner? A game of Blue's Clues reveals thehardly reluctant replacement. The standard discovery of three cluesfollowed by the usual wind-down song would add up to a colossaldisappointment in a feature film, so substantial rounding-out isprovided. Steve stumbles onto a keyboard inhabited by a note calledG-Clef (the unmistakable voice of Ray Charles), who gives a tour of howto make a song. First you pick the notes, then you work on rhythm, thencomes tempo, and, last but not least, "you've got to give it soul."This movie's themes include perseverance (Tickety Tock can't sing butfinds a way to contribute anyway) and self-empowerment. Blue's BigMusical Movie is a feast for little eyes and ears; the sets are socolorful they hurt grown-up eyes, and the songs--especially the onethat gets the Charles treatment--are all sing-along-with-me winners.--Tammy La Gorce ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MOVIE LENGTH BUT...
more like an extended episode of my daughter's favorite show, Blues Clues: Blues Big Musical Movie has been watched by my daughter over and over and over. Unlike "Barney's Big Adventure" or the Wiggles movie (which both were done with movie film), Blue's Big Musical Movie was filmed in the same manner as the television show. On the two aforementenioned children's movies, the colors are washed out like most adult films and my daughter loses interest quickly (15 minutes tops). In this Blues Clues movie, the colors and resolution are exactly the same as the 1/2 hour television show. Therefore, she watches the entire movie from beginning to end. She finds it captivating and I thoroughly enjoy it as well. I play guitar so I appreciate the "how to write a song" segment. The lessons taught in this movie ("don't give up", "song maker upper" and "team work") are all done very well. All in all, it's an episode/movie that I know my daughter (2 1/2 years old as of this writing) will continue to appreciate and enjoy as she gets older and so will I.

A painless way of learning a few things about shapes, numbers, letters, opposites, and good manners, Best Learning Songs Video Ever is an engaging treat for young kids who love music. The story finds Huckle Cat and his buddies putting on a backyard variety show that draws the entire town as an audience. With Huck as master of ceremonies and Lowly Worm as stage manager, the children of Busy Town entertain their families and friends with tunes about the fundamentals of an education. Besides Hilda Hippo's ABC song, there's Oly Owl's melody about shapes, and Alex and Anna's song about opposites. My daughter loves it!!!!!Very educational, and our all around favorite. My 16 month old tries to sing along with the songs. This DVD covers all the basics a toddler needs to learn from counting and the abc's and counting to shapes and opposites. It is really reviews all the basics in one fun DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended!
This is my 2nd Richard Scarry DVD - I also have the ABC DVD.Of the two, I think the ABC is better, but this one is quite good too.It covers a series of concepts with a song each, like counting, shapes, prepositions, alphabet, opposites etc.Of the songs, I don't find any of them memorable except the one teaching the alphabet, which is super (A is for apple, B is for bed, C is for crown that you wear on your head etc).

The DVD is about 30 minutes long, which I find ideal - you can get a bit of housework done without making the TV too much of a babysitter.

Be aware that the Richard Scarry DVDs look a bit low-tech, they are not flashy and polished like Sesame Street DVDs.

When Baby Bear must learn his alphabet in one day, Big Bird patientlytakes him under his wing in Do the Alphabet. Only "The Method,"(a hilarious combination of dance, song, visualization, and grouptherapy) can help Baby Bear on such short notice. The result is 40minutes of ABC's Sesame Street style, where vibrant educationalcartoons, enthusiastic kids, famous guest stars (here, Billy Joel), andharmonizing Muppets make lasting educational impressions. Children ages2 to 6 will enjoy the upbeat musical numbers dedicated to variousletters; a favorite segment features the Boogie Woogie Piggies andtheir flashy rendition of the alphabet song. Throughout the well-pacedshow, Big Bird offers just the right blend of coaching and friendship, much like the ace support-group leader he's mildly spoofing. Hats offto Sesame Street for helping Baby Bear--and his viewingaudience--understand that learning takes time, patience, and a teameffort. --Liane Thomas

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful teaching tool!
My daughter loves Sesame Street, so we picked up this video on a whim.Great purchase! At 20 months old, she says her alphabet and counts to 15.It's not just number recognition, either -- she counts items on pages of books and groups of toys. She loves Ernie and Baby Bear, and loves to sing along and dance to the songs. We're very pleased!

4-0 out of 5 stars Do the Alphabet
I have to say my 12 month old daughter loves do the alphabet she tries to sing along with the songs and dances. This video definitely has her attention.I wouldn't say just because baby bear can't pronounce words correctly my child would speak that way. Unless that is all your child will hear day after day. If the child is conversating with you then baby talk will not be an issue. My daughters vocabulary is very advanced for her age and I don't see her having any speech problems because of the way baby bear talks. As the previous parent suggested. The video is just meant to enforce what you are already teaching you child so they see the alphabet in different settings, cards, toys etc. And help them learn. Not teach them how to talk.My daughter loves it and so do I!!!! The song is very simple and easy for any child to remember.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do the Alphabet- a great disappointment
I bought this video along with some of the Elmo's World videos which my son loves, and I was so disappointed after watching it only once.I will not let my 17 month old son watch it as he loves to watch Elmo videos over and over.I don't want him watching Baby Bear doing his "mispwonunciations" while my son is in this stage of learning speech.I do not want my son to listen to the "mispwonunciations" and pick them up and then have to teach him the correct pronunciation later. It's hard enough for them to learn speech but their learning is based on what they hear.Since Sesame Street does not include an age guide on the outside of the video, I'm not sure if they meant for this to be for older children and maybe it isn't a problem when they're older but I plan to donate this video because I wouldn't even give it to another mom to have then go through this.Maybe in a library or a doctor's office where children only view the tape occasionally it would be OK but this was NOT the video for my family to own.I also will not be bringing home anything else with Baby Bear speaking in it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great if there's a new baby on the way!
My son is 2 1/2 and we are due with our second child next year. He loves to talk about the baby and read books about babies on the way. This book does a great job telling kids about changes that are occurring in mom.......why mom is so tired, why mom's tummy is getting bigger, etc. There are a lot of words in the book, so if your child can't sit still for more than 15-20 minutes to read a story, this book isn't for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Missing Pieces
This is one of my 4-year-old's favorite books, but she stopped reading it when we lost the 5 press-out figures. We don't know how to replace them other than to track down another copy of the book. Also, the storage bin on the last page does not work for the tokens. Great concept, but maybe next time the play pieces could snap on so we don't lose them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, poor construction
My three year old and my 16 month old both love Bear and were excited to get this book! The pieces however are way too flimsy and too difficult toplace into the slots in the book. If the book had been constructed a littledifferently, it would have been far more enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars bears book
This is my 22 month olds favorite book. The only problem is that the play pieces are to thin, causing them to tear slightly when she plays with them to roughly. They can easily be repaired with tape. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alphabet Art Puzzle ~ I Recommend for 18-Months and Up.
In shopping for puzzles over the last few years I've noticed that the manufacture's age recommendations seem to be a bit off. When puzzles are too advanced, the simple solution is to put it up for a later date; however, when they are too simple, they're a waste of money.Unfortunately, the Alphabet Art Puzzle was one of those disappointments.

The puzzle encourages thinking, and matching, but I'm not sure it helped to teach the alphabet. In addition, some of the images are too goofy for this age group. For instance, a piece of Rope is shaped into the letter "R," but a 3-year old don't associate with such a thing.Another example of this, is the letter "Y" for Yarn.Wouldn't a Yo Yo be a better solution? The raised pieces do offer a new motor challenge from plastic knobs, but they are too shallow for the board.I can't seem to move this puzzle without dropping several pieces on the floor. My son found this frustrating as well.

What's more, I think the age recommendation needs to be adjusted.I purchased the Alphabet Art Puzzle when my son was 2-years and 4-months old. It's recommended for children 3-years and up, so I thought it would make a good choice. It didn't challenge him at all.The second time he worked it, he completed it in less than 4-minutes by himself. That said, my son has benefited from the puzzle. He likes working it, and continues to ask questions about the pictures.I recommend it for children 18-months and up, as they will find it more challenging than a 3-year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really terrific puzzle!
This puzzle is one of my favorite gifts to give all the youngsters in my life.I've given it as a shower gift, a birthday present, and a Christmas present, and the kids have all loved it.It has held up very well, even with a few pretty destructive types. It's very visually engaging, and most kids can figure out what most of the pictures represent. Only a few are tricky.Overall, I highly recommend this puzzle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
My now 2 year old began playing with this puzzle (which was handed down from his old brother) when he was about 12 months old.By the time he was 15 months old, he knew all his letters! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great puzzle for growing the mind!
I purchased one of these puzzles for my daughter who is almost 3.The puzzle was a big step up for her.It was like doing an adult puzzle with the edges and interlocking pieces. She can get most of the puzzle together by herself. It is great for concentration and searching as well as the skills she uses to get the piece in place.I think it is a great puzzle to take a step up from the baby puzzles.
