Barbie of Swan Lake: Barbie as Odette
    by Mattel
    Toy
    list price: $19.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Odette, Swan Lake's enchanting and enchanted princess, has never looked less like a water fowl. According to the story, Odetteis spitefully turned into a swan, but here Odette is all-girl from her tiara-topped curls down through her ballet slippers. Her gown, designed with a nod to the famous ballet, is the prettiest a doll could own. It's pink and blue with several sheer layers of skirt and feathery tendrils of fabric that adorn the waist. Barbie also has an ornate, corseted bodice and jeweled choker, but the real showstopper is undoubtedly the glittering plastic wings that light up and flap when the two buttons on the doll's back are pressed. --Diane Beall ... Barbie of Swan Lake: Lila Unicorn and Carriage
    by Mattel
    Toy

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

A noble purple unicorn with glittery blue mane and tail pulls a spectacular pink and blue carriage bedecked with decorative swans: what could be more fairy-tale-ish? Add Barbie and Ken (or other figures--dolls not included), and the Swan Lake story becomes positively romantic in the hands of Barbie fans. Based on the video, Barbie of Swan Lake, Lila the Unicorn and her carriage can set the stage for hours of imaginative play. The carriage really moves, and girls can play with the shiny locks of Lila with the brush and barrettes included. Lila stands 10 inches tall and 10 inches long; she and the carriage are made of hard plastic. "Girly-girls" will go nuts over Lila! --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

Bratz Formal Funk FM Late Night Limousine
    by MGA Entertainment
    Toy (05 September, 2003)
    -- our price: $79.99
(price subject to change: see help)
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

"Formal Funk" is characterized by this all-inclusive, Prom-bound, stretch limousine. Chrome detailing, a gray interior, and cushioned, pivoting seats (with working belts) pronounce its luxury. For realism, the limo's head and taillights illuminate, the tinted windows lift, the horn blows, the wheels turn, and the gear and steering wheel move. That, however, is where "formal" ends and "funk" begins! The hood hides a real FM radio, and the trunk contains a "mega-bass" speaker, which spouts tunes clearly. A smoothie bar (the Bratz are never without one) rests between the backseats, and a lift-up dash houses a "primping station" The funkiest thing of all: the limo's roof comes off to make it a convertible! Other accessories include a "pop-up" TV screen, perfume, makeup tools, and more. Required: 5 "AA" batteries. Warning: choking hazard due to small parts. Not for kids under 3 years. Diane Beall ... Lil' Bratz Deluxe Fashion Mall Playset with Exclusive Nevra Doll
    by MGA Entertainment
    Toy (14 August, 2003)
    -- our price: $69.99
(price subject to change: see help)
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Ah, finally a setting that shows the Lil' Bratz in their native habitat: the mall. This all-inclusive play set lays out the total "mall" experience, in intricate detail. It's an undiscovered universe for those who aren't old enough yet to handle the real thing. It's certainly cheaper. Even if your kid has already been baptized at the perfume counter and stuffed at the food court, they'll appreciate the set's effort at authenticity. "Mall music" coming from the record shop/magazine store has tiny CDs the dolls can listen to with thimble-sized headsets. There's also a movie theater, cosmetics and clothes boutique, and tons of detailed accessories and features, including a working escalator. Required: 2 "C" batteries for the escalator, and 3 "LR44" batteries for the music store.--Diane Beall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Magazine
Last fall, I picked up an issue of "Discovery Girls" at Kroger. After skimming a few pages, I decided that it was worth a try, and asked my mom if she would buy it for me.I read through the entire magazine in one night, and enjoyed it very much!I bought a couple more issues after that until I finally decided that I just needed to get a subscription.I ordered at an off-time, so I ended up having to wait a couple months until I got my first issue. But boy, was it worth it!You can just imagine my excitement when I came home from playing outside and found an issue of "Discovery Girls" waiting for me!

Contained in each "Discovery Girls" magazine are:

    - Information about this issue's real life "Discovery Girls".If you find that the "Discovery Girls" company is coming to your state soon, and you are between the age of eight and twelve, you could be one, too!"Discovery Girls" get to have fun and hang out together, model for pictures that will be featured in the magazine, possibly try out a new product, and spend a day at someplace fun, ranging from a salon to "Build-A-Bear Workshop".Two girls are chosen to be cover models.

    - Articles giving helpful advice about things such as friendship, jealousy, getting along with siblings, and more.Unlike most magazines, "Discovery Girls" actually gives GOOD advice that will really help you with your problems. And besides the longer articles, there is also a section called "Ask Ali", where you can send in a letter to "Ali", and possibly receive an answer in a later issue.

    - Plenty of room for you to speak, whether it be sharing advice with fellow readers, telling an embarassing moment, voicing your opinion about a certain topic, telling a fictional story, sharing something shocking that really happened to you, or asking questions and giving ideas to the editors.

    - Lots of cool quizzes! Some are just for fun, but others can teach you a little bit about yourself. For example, featured in the most recent issue are the quizzes: "Are You a Drama Queen?", "Case Closed!" (Are you too quick to judge people?), "Which Star Could Be Your BFF?", and "What's Your Trollz Style?" ("Trollz" is a product). They are entertaining, nicely-illustrated quizzes that you will be giving to your friends.

    - Sports advice.A new sport is featured each issue. Some past ones have been basketball, softball, track, and I think volleyball.I personally never read the sports advice, since dance is the only sport that I am involved in at the moment. But if "dance" is ever mentioned, I'll read every little word and detail!

    - Celebrity pages.Want to know more about a celebrity?Maybe find out just how much you already know about them?Celebrity pages (ranging from quizzes involving them to interviews) are featured frequently in "Discovery Girls".

    - Craft ideas, one or two comics, occasionally something along the lines of a word search, and more, meaning more fun!The crafts are unique, too! They're not all just "scissors and paper" crafts. One in particular was REALLY cute!It was making cute snack-size treats for your mom on Mother's Day.

    - Opportunities to learn more about other countries and cultures. In each issue, one girl from each country is interviewed, tells a little about her life, what she likes to eat, what music she listens to, and some other things, and then there are facts such as "things that make that country unique", and "the traditional way to dress in that country".This month's country was India!

    - Chances to win cool stuff, and advertisements for new books, movies, toys, clothes, and much more. There are also website names featured in certain areas, so that girls who love to surf the web and do online shopping will never get bored.

If that doesn't convince you that "Discovery Girls" is a great magazine, then it isn't the magazine for you.But I love it, and I can't wait to get my next issue!

    Notes to parents:

A new issue of "Discovery Girls" comes every two months.

Some slightly older-girl content is featured in certain issues (such as "Which Bra is Right for You?").So be aware that bras and boys ARE talked about occasionally. But also be aware that there is no profanity, crude language, or anything else of the sort.

1-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT For 8-11 year olds
I'm 13 and i think that this magazine is the "grown-up" version of American Girl but is still too babyish and boring for preteens, so 12-15 year olds try Girl's Life,it's sooooo much bettter!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars SAVE OUR TWEENS
I would like to applaud you on your magazine's target audience. There were no magazines for girls my age when I was a pre-teen.I'm glad that you addressed the ongoing problem of mean girls and girls growing up too fast.I recently submitted an article on both of those subjects to my writing work shop, and it was well received. Please let me know if it would be all right to mail you a sample of my writing. Because I remember what it was like to be a child, I think that I can share some valuable ideas with young readers.Angela Tanzi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ag rox!
i am a longtime subscriber to ag and i have learned so much and had so much fun reading it. i cant wait to get my newt one. there are no ads and directed at girls between the ages of 7 and about 14 or 15. its a great magazine to give for a gift.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT for 12 year olds!
American Girl says it is for ages 8-12. I seriously think it should be ages 7-9 or 10. First of all, the magazine is only 6 issues a year for $23! I don't know about you, but I think that's a waste! Plus, the magazine only has 49 pages! Also, American Girl doesn't really have things girls in the older age range care about- fashion, quizzes with real meaning, and stuff like that. It seems all we ever do is make crafts, make parties, cook, look through the magazine in less than half an hour, and so on. If you have a daughter who thinks she wants this magazine, think again! It's like throwing away money and this magazine has no form of education in it. Basically the staff is trying to make sure that 7 year olds enjoy it without adding in the stuff 12 year olds like. NOT for 12 year olds, and NOT a good combination!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Still a great magazine. . .
I admit, the magazine needs work as many of these sweet tweens pointed out, although I feel that it should be changed for different reasons.
One reviewer knowingly wrote that she knows what it is like to be thirteen- she says that its not about crafts or fun, but growin up, body image, and boys.Oh, my heart breaks for you.Look at yourselves- are the teenage years really only for flirting and prettying oneself to fulfill a stereotype set by a pressuring society? Is it really that horrible for girls to get their heads out of the stars' faces and look towards the real ones, set goals and be themselves.Woe for you dear thirteen year olds. The times will have come and gone, but what do the empty rituals of flirting and countlessly applying mascara to look older, when in turn YOU are the ones looking immature.

I am 15 and a half, and love American Girl. Girls are given a chance to be themselves, and yes reviewer, it is okay to be silly and not worry about who thinks what. I suppose I would be considered a failure in your eyes because although I am intelligent and artistic, I actually admit to reading AG and watching the Andy Griffith show, and (gasp!) have not yet had a real boyfriend. I may have cancelled my subscription, but that is only because I am broke. And yes, I would like the magazine to be changed- I'd like a stronger message about beauty from the inside, and yes details about puberty, high school, and college, urges to abstain, and promises that girls can to anything. As to the boy issue, maybe information on fun things to do with your guy-friend, how to ask him out, how to deal with letting go, but let readers know that having a boyfriend is not mandatory.I'd like non-biased information pertaining to current events, right alongside with the silly quizzes and fun crafts of yesteryear. Now, aside from what I'd like, I hope some realize that there is so much more about American Girl than what you see.It is a magazine geared towards girls, regardless of age.I still enjoy reading it. Keep your subscrption.Try to look past the hype. You don't need Teen People to experience being a teen.Just good friends, and maybe a few ideas from good old AG.

Sorry if this is too long, but I must let teens know that they can be themselves- it's not really about the makeup or the boys, but what is inside. And that is what American Girl is about. And who can possibly be too mature to be themselves? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Moon
A great magazine for 10 & under, but not for 11 year olds.It had enough about crushes, but not to much. The history article was good.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Moon
First of all, I really used to like New Moon. I'm rather growing out of it now, but I still take a peek at copies I find once and awhile.

I love what this magazine commits to--their focus on women's rights and the environment. I love that it teaches that body image is not the only thing, that women are strong people too, and that we are all on this earth together--that it is our job to preserve it for future generations. The liberal leaning of this magazine also appeals to me. However, I do think it's a little to anxious to talk about puberty--that's what books are for, not magazines. Going from reading a feature on a girl from Africa to reading about periods--well, that's just a little too much for me. It really breaks up the flow of the magazine. Also, I didn't enjoy this magazine much after I was thirteen, by then I wanted Cicada instead.

All in all, however, this magazine is definetly worth getting for kids. I still like most parts of it, and it has some great teachings.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
I love New Moon it is perfect for the girl who isn't totally ready for J-14 or Teen People but has good enough stuff for young teens. It is filled with great stories and uplifting advice. 5 Stars all the way. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
Cutesy, fluffy, but of no use to girls who actually have problems in life. When girls are at the crucial age of 11, 12, or so, and when they are just starting to discover their interests in boys, when they are just beginning their journeys towards womanhood, it is no time for them to be bombarded with information on how to kiss a boy. That comes much later.
Girls who act so mature, kissing and dating boys when they are so young, are doomed to a life of divorce and unhappiness. THey will think that every cute guy who comes along actually cares about them. Girls that age have more important things to worry about than catching a cute guy. I am very disappointed...I thought this magazine would deal with issues such as grades, building better relationships with your parents, dealing with your raging emotions. But GL is all about cute styles, bikini-worthy bodies, little blonde girls, and boys. Yuck.
That said, it does have some cute quizzes. But again, totally useless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT For 12-15 year olds
I think this magazine is perfect for girls who "graduated" from American Girl and\or Discovery Girls, i know i sure have, it really deserves 5 stars! I loooooooooooove Girls Life!!!!!!!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars One word-Awesome!
It's a awesome magazine and it's not a superficel magazine but it has too much on guys and how to get them. But there's advice, cool new fashions, and much, much more! At first my mom did't like it but then she liked it when I told her about it and how I was getting older. I bet she's glad that I don't I don't read crap like J-14 and Bop. I love this mag, but Teen is my fav, but this mag comes in second. It's a grown-up version of Discovery Girls and cooler than American Girl! ... Read more
