Dragon Ball Z : Budokai Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (06 December, 2002) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Dragon Ball Z: Budokai faithfully recreates the popular Dragon Ball animated series, giving you the power to fight up to 23 familiar friends and foes in a variety of scenarios. It's not for the weak of thumb, so start out with a little practice, learning the powerful kicks, punches, and elaborate combinations that will lead you to victory. When youve mastered the skills, and warmed up your thumbs, jump into the tournament ring and defeat opponents--every victory wins you money to spend at Mr. Popos, buying and trading skills to trounce future opponents. The Story segment of the game may be the most fun for fans, though it diverges from standard gameplay. Where most games have long, elaborate series of gameplay, intercut with story, Dragon Ball Z intercuts very short interactive battles with long animated sequences portraying everything from the Saiyan Saga through to the Cell Games. The animation and voicing in these sequences mirrors the television series and even uses the very same voice actors as the show. Some fans may be disappointed when gameplay ends with the Cell Games--or they may take it as a sure sign that future games will be released to cover the remaining sagas. Fun? Yes. Flawless? No. Theres not a whole lot under the surface of the sagas--what you see is what you get. And you also might get a little carpal tunnel syndrome along the way--the button-mashing combinations needed to pull off the most awesome moves may not be friendly to fans forearms. Still, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai may be a slam dunk for fans of the series who now have the opportunity not just to watch the sagas, but to participate in them. --Maile Bohlmann Pros:

Time Crisis 3 Average Customer Review: Video Game (24 October, 2003) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (22)
STORY 7/10 This is the best story any of the Time Crisis games could offer. Usually, the story is pretty linear and retarded, but now the story has some twists. for example, on rescue mission mode is based around the character Alicia, who is on a mission to rescue her brother. Along the way, Alicia runs into one of her brothers comrades, which to my actual surprise, pulled a gun onto Alicia. The actual plot is that two of V.S.S.E's best officers were sent into the once-peaceful town of Astigos to stop the Zagorian forces from launcing tactical missiles towards Lukano. Along the way, they meet up with Alicia, the sister of a leader of the lukano troops, who joined up with them to rescue her brother. Enough of this though... SOUND AND MUSIC 9/10 This is the best music i have ever heard on any of the Time Crisis games. It is VERY catchy, and will force you to pause the game and listen to it. There is a problem with the music however. During the cutscenes, the music is so irritating that i want to bash the skull of whoever made that music, as it is very lame, not catchy, and makes me want to vomit. As usual, the Sound is top-notch on this game, as the gunshots sound like gunshots, and the enemies grunt and scream when you shoot them. Helicopters sound real, you can hear the engine in the jeeps, and so on. GAMEPLAY 10/10 The most fun light-gun shooting game available. this game portrays many challenges, such as helicopters, enemies shooting from jeeps, or the flamethrower enemies (ohhh those guys piss me off). A VERY fun and challenging item that they added onto this game are shields for the enemies. what I am talking about is that it doesnt take one shot to kill one enemy, but certain enemies have to be shot about 5 times to kill, making the game longer and more enjoyable. Another add-on that Namco produced was the weapon-select system. this system allows you to choose from four different weapons: The Handgun (unlimited), Machine Gun, Shotgun, and Grenade launcher(last three are limited). In order to receive more ammunition for the limited guns, you have to search and destroy certain yellow-armored soldiers. This new select system is very fun, and if for some reason you get angry at this one section, you can just shoot a grenade at all of the enemies, making you happier, and clearing that area. The one thing that I think that Namco should have left on from Time Crisis 2 is the double-gun mode....That mode was superfun. Namco created more Crisis missions, even harder and even more than before. Also, after you beat Arcade mode, you unlock a mode called the rescue mission mode, where you play as Alicia on her way to rescuing her brother. along the way, you can play a new feature: Sniper combat, which is pretty fun. GRAPHICS 10/10 top-notch. that all I have to say REPLAY VALUE 10/10 I, myself, play this game many times over again, as it is a very nice challenge with lots of fun in it. I recommend you buy this game with a guncon 2 (about 60 dollars. I know it is expensive, but you'll get over it) ... Read more Asin: B0000D8MBA |

NBA Street Vol 2 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (29 April, 2003) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.88 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review We could say that NBA Street 2 is the shizzle, or the sheezy, or the shizzit, but we won't--even though it is. You'll get enough street talk playing the game. Street 2 is just the best basketball game yet. Although it is an official NBA product, the fact that it's playground ball liberates Street 2 from the confines of fan reverence. Instead, especially in the "Be a Legend" option, it has a great sense of humor about itself. The boss of each city, once defeated, can be added to the player'sroster--and although they are caricatures, they're fondly and funnily done. Among the best are Stretch (a dunker from Harlem), Dime (a female ballstealer who resembles the singer Pink) and Osmosis (an Oakland version of "It" player Yao Ming). Our prediction? Kids who see Street 2 will not only want to play the game, they'll want to be street legends themselves when they grow up. And speaking of kids: parents couldn't find a kid- or teen-friendlier game. There's no adult language, and the color commentary is fantastic. It's much improved from the original game's repetitive "MJ, go on with your bad self"patter. Bobbito Garcia, a real-life streetball announcer, should get a "nice work" bonus. For that matter, so should the ambience-noise guys, who included, for example, a single cellphone ring in the background. Clever. Those not inclined to love sports games should trust in Street 2--it's visually brilliant, witty, and don't-take-it-away-from-me addictive. True basketball fans should get this game immediately, if not sooner. They'll best appreciate that all the old time players have their moment in the sun; for example, 5,000 points unlocks Dr. J, and a billboard between sets advertises Bill Russell and other pioneers. Classic hip-hop from artists like MC Lyte rounds out the impressive package. Kudos to gamemaker EA Sports Big for taking it to the hole. --Jennifer Buckendorff ... Read more Features Reviews (90)

True Crime: Streets of LA Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (07 November, 2003) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.88 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review True Crime: Streets of L.A. is a Grand-Theft-Auto-esque action/driving/shooter that allows you to take control of Nick Kang, a cop out to solve a strange rash of crimes and solve his father's mysterious murder. The game treats itself like a movie, with frequent dialogue and cinematics, a soundtrack filled with some of rap's heavy hitters, and some surprising voiceover talent, like Christopher Walken and Snoop Dogg. The missions given to you tend to involve shooting up or beating up (there is a big distinction between gun fighting and kung fu) a room full of bad guys, or simply have you racing against the clock in your car. In between, you can roam around and solve simple street crimes (mugging, car jackings, etc), or earn upgrades for your driving, shooting, and fighting abilities. The upgrade mechanism is important because while it's an entertaining way to add new gameplay elements several hours in, the early game leaves you with so few moves that the game is hard, or worse, boring. The game also features a Good-Cop/Bad-Cop karma system that rewards or punishes you for doing the right or wrong thing. Arrest criminals in non-lethal manner to get better endings, or terrorize the populace and have both citizens and police turn on you. While it can be an entertaining take on the Grand Theft Auto genre, True Crime tends to suffer from hit and miss execution. For every compelling game element, there's another equally awful one. There are several mission types that are completely devoid of any fun, melee fighting favors button mashing even after the nearly-useless string of upgrades, and the controls and camera seem to work against you more often than for you. Ultimately, hardcore Grand Theft Auto fans and the infinitely patient may be in for a treat, but everyone else is advised to think twice about this game.--Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover Pros:
