This gameis what PSX is all about.
The graphics are bigger and bolder in VR2, and the action isfaster. You will actually see other cars on the track and race them rim torim, unlike CMR where racing is done strictly by stage, without ever seeingother cars on the road.VR2 is more difficult, though not impossible.AndVR2 has one feature that seperates it from CRM: a track creator.Gettingbored with the same old tracks?Just make your own.Sorta takes one backto Excitebike on 8-bit NES.CRM seems to be more of a simulation, anddeeper than VR2, with many things to learn, in addition to someGran-Turismo-esque "license tests". And that might be thedeciding factor, are you more inclined to play an arcade-style rally game(a la Sega Rally) or do you want a game that has less flash, but moresubstance (a la Gran Turismo). Both games are tremendous (yeah, I haveboth) but unless you're a true rally racing freak, you could easily settlefor one of the two.The choice is yours. ... Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit by Electronic Arts Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (16 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Few racing games for the PlayStation can approach Need forSpeed III: Hot Pursuit in terms of car selection, track layout, andsheer fun. Combine the game's quality with the fact that it was addedto the PlayStation's bargain Greatest Hits collection, and youhave a title that deserves to be in the library of any racing fan. Hot Pursuit gets its name from our favorite mode of gameplay, inwhich players try to exceed the reach of the long arm of the law bygreatly exceeding the speed limit. The ultimate goal is to beat youropponent to the finish line, but usually it's hard enough just dodgingoncoming traffic, swerving around police roadblocks (complete withspike strips), and trying to keep pursuit vehicles from slamming youoff the road. It's nearly as fun to watch replays as it is to race, andwe've only discussed one of the game's five types of play. Thisdiverse, fast-paced racer is definitely a keeper. --T. ByrlBaker Pros:

Need For Speed High Stakes by Electronic Arts Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (16 November, 1999) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Need for Speed series is already established as oneof the best racing game series on the PlayStation. Need for Speed:High Stakes continues the tradition in fine style by adding severalnew elements to the gameplay, and offering a wide variety of tracks andcars. Where the previous game in the series had you running from the law, this one has you racing for pink slips. Sure, you can still playcops and robbers (this time even playing the role of John Q. Law),but the real fun in this game comes from racing to win so that you canbuy a better car. Once equipped with faster wheels, you can hook upwith a friend to race for titles in the two-player mode. High Stakes boasts the best graphics in the series, but theycome at a price: slowdown. All too frequently, we found ourselveshitting a wall or an opponent's vehicle because the game stuttered aswe drove into a graphics-intensive portion of the track. Good visualsare nice, but they should never come at the expense of gameplay. Still, when else will you get a chance to blow away a buddy's shiny newMcLaren F1 in your "lowly" Corvette? --T. Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed by Electronic Arts Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (11 April, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review It's obvious that the developers of Need for Speed: PorscheUnleashed put a lot of research into their creation. There's enoughinformation about the legendary series of Porsche automobiles to satisfyany car aficionado, and this game contains tons of models--from late1940s cars to recent 2000 models--from this marquee brand. Despite concerns that the presence of a single car brand would result ina lack of variety among racing options, Need for Speed: PorscheUnleashed does offer an impressive amount of diversity. Not allPorches are created alike, and the old 356 handles much differently thana newer 911.Thus, there is much potential in this all-Porscheoffering. Unfortunately, while this game has received strong critical acclaim inits PC incarnation, the PlayStation conversion contains some problems. For example, the track graphics are a bit muddy, and the cars appearfuzzier in this game. Worse still, the physics model for driving is wayoff. Surprisingly, older titles in the Need for Speed series lookand play better than this. Unless you are a Porsche nut, steer clear ofthis one. --T.
