Monsters, Inc. Scream Arena Average Customer Review: Video Game (19 September, 2002) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (11)
The game starts out with a short clip from the movie Monsters, Inc. and then sends the player into Monstropolis, the city where all the monsters in the movie live. There are many different stages, each representing a scene from the movie, but in order to get into a particular scene the player must succeed at the preceding arenas.Once the player succeeds at one arena, the next arena is unlocked. Once the player has selected the scene that he or she desires to play, the next step is to choose which monster he or she wants to be.I should mention that the game can either be a single player game where the player competes with the game itself or it can be a multi-player game, where the players can either compete head to head with each other, or work together to defeat the game's monsters. Choosing your monster is, in my opinion, the best part of the game.Nearly every monster, if not every monster, from the movie is able to be selected for use.Once the player has selected a monster, the monster will greet him or her by saying something along the lines of, "Thanks for choosing me!" Not only does the monster speak, but it also acts in the same manner that he or she did in the movie. The player's monster is then placed into the arena you have chosen, and the game begins. Some examples of the arenas you can choose from are: Main Street, Mike and Sully's Apartment, the Lobby of the Monsters, Inc. Building, and Harry Hausens, the restaurant in the movie. My favorite arena is the one at the Chinese Restaurant. In this scene, like all the other scenes, the object is to hit the other monsters with balls while your monster avoids being hit.The twist in this room is that there's a disco ball.Every time a monster is hit, he or she is frozen in that spot and begins to disco dance, giving the other monsters a better chance of hitting him or her. Not only is this game adorable, but it is very fun to play.I would highly recommend that if you have access to a Nintendo Game Cube, you rent Monsters, Inc. Scream Arena and play it with your friends. When I played it with my friends, we played for numerous hours every day we had the game, and never once got bored or tired of playing.Hopefully you will find Monsters, Inc. Scream Arena as enjoyable as I did. ... Read more Asin: B00006F2BE |

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (08 November, 2002) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.88 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Set in the year 2008, Ghost Recon is a Tom Clancy-inspired war game that puts you in command of a Special Forces unit pitted against Russian ultranationalists trying to rebuild the former Soviet Union. Although the story arc is grand in scale (in keeping with Clancy's style), the game doesn't involve you in the war's major battles. You'll actually spend most of your time behind enemy lines--rescuing downed fighter pilots, knocking out enemy patrols, ambushing armor columns. You control a six-man squad, divided into two teams, and you have the opportunity to handpick your squad members (and their equipment) after each mission briefing. You can switch your point of view to any of the six active soldiers--the soldier you control automatically becomes the leader of his team, while the other team operates according to orders you give via a map interface. Thus, you can move one team into a covering position, leave them with orders to provide cover fire, then lead the other team in to reach your objective. Or, break up your squad and try to achieve two objectives simultaneously. The level of detail and realism is incredible, right down to the way the soldiers communicate in hushed tones and with gestures. The complexity of the game requires an elaborate controller setup that takes a while to get used to (luckily there are plenty of training missions designed to help you learn the multitude of movement, weapons, and command functions). Once you get the hang of it, you'll find it's worth the time spent in boot camp. --Maile Bohlmann Pros:

ToeJam & Earl III Average Customer Review: Video Game (25 October, 2002) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Toe Jam & Earl franchise is an anomaly to the trend of hyper-realism and violence in video games, and this latest addition to the series excels at creating another gloriously fun and wacky cartoon experience. The goal of Toe Jam & Earl III: Mission to Earth is to recover the stolen Twelve Sacred Albums of Funk by exploring various levels on Earth, befriending Earthlings, and finding keys and presents to aid in the journey. The real fun of the game, however, is its funk theme. You can convert unfunky Earthlings to the ways of funk, and there are inspired funky touches throughout the game, including a gospel vocal trio that sings whenever a new level loads. The game doesn't take itself seriously, and to enjoy it, a competitive gaming mindset should be set aside. In two-player mode, the game promotes teamwork by allowing players to share health (just high-five each other) and immunity to attacks. The game's combination of 80s funk and overall goofiness won't appeal to everyone, but it's an ideal mix for parents in search of a game that they can enjoy with their kids (the game is rated Teen for animated blood and violence, but the gore is all cartoonish) and anyone else with an offbeat sense of humor. --Sung Nicholas Kim Pros:

Mario Party 4 Average Customer Review: Video Game (24 October, 2002) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Its a pretty bold claim but for many, Mario Party is the best multiplayer game series ever. No need for guns or complicated role-playing elements here--Mario Party is fun because its simple. The original N64 game created an entirely new subgenre--an unlikely combination of traditional board games and lots of ultrasimple arcade titles. The idea is that you travel around the board trying to collect stars, which must be paid for with coins, and you get coins by competing in minigames, which occur at the end of every round. These minigames generally dont last longer than a minute or two, and many are based on old Game & Watch titles. There are over 50 minigames in Mario Party 4, and each involves either a free-for-all, two players against two, or one against three (depending where you land on the board at the end of your turn). These can involve anything from skydiving to basketball dunking, or car racing to hide-and-seek, to name a few. Admittedly, this basic description of the gameplay might not sound too exciting, and indeed if youre playing with less than three human opponents it can be pretty tedious. But play it with the full complement of non-virtual rivals and the games infinite capacity for cheating, backstabbing, and ganging up allows it to completely transcend the humdrum sum of its parts. Theres nothing terribly new in this third sequel except that the graphics are much improved and the minigames are all new, but that really misses the point: get this game out at Christmas instead of Trivial Pursuit and youll wonder how you ever got through the holiday without it. --David Jenkins, Amazon.co.uk ... Kakuto Chojin Average Customer Review: Video Game list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Kakuto Chojin delivers a new level of realism where no two fights are the same, and there are no canned reactions: every punch, kick, and counter has a different effect. Heads snap back, sweat flies, muscles flex, legs buckle. Up to four fighters can engage in the action at the same time--go two-on-two or have an all out four-person brawl. Forget fighting pretty boys and supermodels. These are the folks you never want to meet in a dark alley. These fighters are tough--right out of some secret fight club. This is a grim, somber, deadly underworld, where fighters move among the shadows and battles take place on rain-soaked rooftops, dark alleys, and mysterious chambers. ... Read more Reviews (5)
The characters look like of bunch of clowns, literally -- bad knock off crosses between pro-wrestlers and circus clowns. The skinning looks like plastic. The gameplay is ridiculously easy, not to mention boring and repetitive. The so-called fountains of sparks and such are one corner in one arena. The arenas are all simple squares with no interesting features whatsoever. The blood effects are simply too pathetic to go into. In short this is an elementary tech demo not a finished game and I am shocked that it was ever released in the state it's in. THEY SHOULD PUT A SKULL AND CROSSBONES POISON SYMBOL ON THE PACKAGE BECAUSE YOU WILL DIE OF BOREDOM PLAYING IT!!!
CONS Finally I just wanted to say this game is a lot of fun.We have played Dead Or Alive 3, Mortal Combat:Deadly Alliance and Tao Feng: Fist Of The Lotus and they are fun but in our opinion Kakuto Chojin just has more STYLE. It's pretty unique and the characters don't seem to be like any I've seen in any other game. This may be the game's downfall as far as public opinion goes. I may buy DOA 3 and Tao Feng in the future but Kakuto Chojin is my third favorite XBOX game behind Max Payne and Halo. Microsoft did a wonderful job. I hope they don't give up on the fighting game market. I can tell they are trying to be outside the pack by making KAkuto chojin and Tao Feng.

Dragon Ball Z : Budokai Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (06 December, 2002) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Dragon Ball Z: Budokai faithfully recreates the popular Dragon Ball animated series, giving you the power to fight up to 23 familiar friends and foes in a variety of scenarios. It's not for the weak of thumb, so start out with a little practice, learning the powerful kicks, punches, and elaborate combinations that will lead you to victory. When youve mastered the skills, and warmed up your thumbs, jump into the tournament ring and defeat opponents--every victory wins you money to spend at Mr. Popos, buying and trading skills to trounce future opponents. The Story segment of the game may be the most fun for fans, though it diverges from standard gameplay. Where most games have long, elaborate series of gameplay, intercut with story, Dragon Ball Z intercuts very short interactive battles with long animated sequences portraying everything from the Saiyan Saga through to the Cell Games. The animation and voicing in these sequences mirrors the television series and even uses the very same voice actors as the show. Some fans may be disappointed when gameplay ends with the Cell Games--or they may take it as a sure sign that future games will be released to cover the remaining sagas. Fun? Yes. Flawless? No. Theres not a whole lot under the surface of the sagas--what you see is what you get. And you also might get a little carpal tunnel syndrome along the way--the button-mashing combinations needed to pull off the most awesome moves may not be friendly to fans forearms. Still, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai may be a slam dunk for fans of the series who now have the opportunity not just to watch the sagas, but to participate in them. --Maile Bohlmann Pros:
