    Editorial Review

As you've probably heard before, an unexamined life... may be pretty darn boring. You can remedy that with All About Me, a journal filled with checklists and fill-in-the-blank questions divided into 25 categories, including sexuality, ego, wishes & dreams, opinions, emotions, memories, and choices. What authors have affected you? Do you believe in God? What film can you watch over and over? Ever had sex on an airplane? Do you want to be buried or cremated?

All About Me can serve as a fine tool for improving your self-knowledge; it's also been used by couples who want to get to know each other better, and would make great fodder for getting a party going (especially the question, "Does a photo of you naked exist?"). If you're interested in self-actualization or improving your relationships, you'll find the book fascinating, while anyone just looking for a fun way to spend a rainy day or make a long trip go by faster will be rewarded, too. ... This is a nice.. beginner journal about the self. It would also make a wonderful present for a teenager or someone who may want a more sillier type of question. It has quite a few questions that are one line answers, and questions to me that don't really seem all that interesting or needed for a true "About My Life" journal fanatic. Silly questions are the "How do you put the toliet paper on" type of questions. It may be a cute gift or research method if your starting to get serious in a relationship and you want to find out some facts about someone. However, if your looking for a journal that you want to be able to fill out, and pass down to generations to get a real sense of who you are, you should look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars its all about me
I think this book is helpful and fun at the same time.

Get this book as a starter journal, or as a way to rediscover you.The questions are probing, but easy enough to answer.Along the way...fill in the blanks on your road to discovery. You will learn a lot about yourself by using this book.

Further, you can share your answers with your best friend or lover to open yourself up to them too. It's sometimes easier than talking to share with written words. This is an excellent door opener to everyone. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A beloved classic since its initial publication in 1947, this vivid, insightful journal is a fitting memorial to the gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Born in 1929, Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her marvelously detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic, quarrelsome intimacy with her parents, sister, a second family, and a middle-aged dentist who has little tolerance for Anne's vivacity. The diary's universal appeal stems from its riveting blend of the grubby particulars of life during wartime (scant, bad food; shabby, outgrown clothes that can't be replaced; constant fear of discovery) and candid discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent (everyone criticizes me, no one sees my real nature, when will I be loved?). Yet Frank was no ordinary teen: the later entries reveal a sense of compassion and a spiritual depth remarkable in a girl barely 15. Her death epitomizes the madness of the Holocaust, but for the millions who meet Anne through her diary, it is also a very individual loss. --Wendy Smith ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diary of Anne Frank
When I picked up this book for the first time I was afraid it will be a typical Holocaust-book with concentration camps and lots of suffering. Instead it turned out to be a somewhat typical (though exceptionally well-written) collection of records of the everyday life of a teen I could more or less identify with, and it was a surprising and welcomed feeling. Even though it was written decades ago, the diary is so fresh and vivid we feel like we knew Anne personally, and she is so optimistic, so full of life that when the diary abruptly comes to an end, it couldn't be more shocking to see the empty pages after her last entry. The thought of so much optimism, so much vitality being crushed between the cruel hands of history is even more heartbreaking when one knows that if she held on for just a few weeks more, she would have survived it.

I read both the old and the new edition of the diary. Yes, the Anne of the old edition is more likeable, but the Anne of the new edition is more real. Sometimes I felt like I was an intruder in Anne's private life when reading about her innermost secrets, and I can only hope she really meant it to be published.

I believe the diary is genuine. I know very well that girls aged 14-15 usually don't write this well, but she might have been the exception. Some say it was written by her father, but the optimistic tone of the diary is not that of a person who lost all his family in a death camp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong and Realistic
Reading the whole diary was a very big influence to my life. What happened in world war II and how bad people were treated is just devastating. This book gives you a good insight from the point of view of what really happened. Also Anne Frank's diary was about her changing from being girl to woman also. Yes there are some parts that seem like she is just yapping her mouth but that is natural when you convey your feelings to your personal diary. Every book has good points and bad points. I will write on both

    Good Points
    1. Gives good perspective of what WWII was like
    2. Lets you know a person who deserved to live
    3. Helps understand children going through puberty and how their mind changes
    4. Reminds us of the horror of what the Nazi's did and should of never happened

    Bad Points
    1. Anne at times carries on and on (but she wanted to be a journalist)
    2. If you are looking for a book that is straight to the point this isn't that kind of book (This is a diary)

Overall I love this book for its reality and down to earth point of view. Makes you think about what it was really like. Anne Frank was a girl that was killed just for her belief in God. The Nazi's should never been allowed to do this but it happened. May the mistakes of WWII never happen again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great account on the holocaust
This book gave a good view of this young girl's life and what a lot of people had to go through during the holocaust.Anne Frank wrote a good detailed account on how bad the holocaust really was and how she handled the problems. They translated her writings to make it feel like you actually knew here and you felt sad for her during her hardships. Her courage and strengths encourage many and this is a very good first person account on the holocaust. This is a very powerful story that makes me fell horrible that those kinds of things were happening to people and that Anne Frank had to go through this experience. ... Lighten up, NANCY!This book is meant to be FUN.It's not a BIBLE.I think the authors have enough respect for the readers to think we can THINK for ourselves.I'm a 40-year old woman who has never had a hard time showing her bad-ass side, and the friends & men in my life like me this way, though they sometimes fight against it!That "edge" comes with the territory- if you want a smart, funny, interesting woman in your life, guess what? She may have a bad girl lurking just below the surface. These books are all hilariously funny and completely respectful of the women they're geared towards- I'm suprised someone like Nancy even picked it up!Did she stumble into the wrong aisle?I loved this one, and really enjoyed the Guide to the Open Road- coffee almost shot out of my nose as I read it in the bookstore cafe.FUN!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is amazingly simple...I could have thought of it myself...had I not just been dumped and thinking about little else. The exercises are simple, yet helpful. It allows you to vent your feelings without doing anything stupid, humilitating yourself and making the situation worse.I'd recommend it to anyone who's been dumped and suffering a blow to their self-esteem

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes My Job Easier
I'm a therapist who was presented with a copy of The Breakup Diary by one of my patients. She told me she wanted to use it as a template for our discussions. I took it home, looked over the exercises, and was surprised that this book was written by a comedian. The exercises were actually very helpful. Coupled with therapy, this book really helped my patient get over her Ex. I have since purchased 25 copies to give to my patients who were going through similar problems. I really recommend this book. It's light and funny but a very helpful read. - Dr. MGB

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
My copy of The Breakup Diary just arrived yesterday and I LOVE IT!I stayed up until 2 o'clock in the morning doing the exercises and I couldn't wait to get back to them today.I swear, it's like I have a therapist sitting right on my table just waiting for me to "talk to."I'm buying two more copies to keep on hand for friends.I've kept journals after breakups, but always sort of wrote all over the place.Never pinpointing specific problems to help me find solutions. This nails the problems on the head and really helps you open your heart and let it all out.Great idea.Great book.Highly recommended. If I could give it 10 stars, I would! ... Editorial Review

Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy.

If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humor, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married." The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me feel all warm and British inside.
Right then - just finished watching this absolutely super movie, and am now going to piddle around acting rather terribly British, what?Don't get your knickers in a twist Duckie, I'll hop right to the point - I bloody LOVE this film.

Loosely inspired by Pride and Prejudice, but in a way Ms. Austin never intended, what with all the shagging and all, the movie is not exactly like Ms. Fielding's book either. One of things I liked about the book was the little diary notes, which obviously couldn't be brought out the same way in the movie, and quite a few other side stories had to be scrapped as well, including the entire ending.Bridget's friends and family have had their parts drastically cut, to make way for a first class compact comedy, focused almost entirely on Bridget, Daniel (loving the beaver) Cleaver, and Mark Darcy.

Never-the-less, like the book, the movie is a laugh out loud affair, with Renee Zellweger accurately capturing the spirit of the awkward and ditsy Bridget, Hugh Grant being the consummate cad, and Colin Firth (sigh) replaying an updated yet still straitlaced Darcy.

Guest appearances by Salman Rushdie and Jeffrey Archer add a little literary support, and the DVD is loaded with features like deleted scenes, comments from the actors and director, as well as from Helen Fielding.

My suggestion would be to read the book first, then watch the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Someone exactly like him
In the tradition of good British romance comedies, in my opinion, even surpasses Four Weddings.I loved this movie, loved the music, loved Colin Firth with his intelligent, aloof ways. All character bits, down to bridget's relations were all great comics.'I like it. Very much. Just as it is...'

4-0 out of 5 stars Dear Diary
    Dear Diary,

Tonight, I went to see 'Bridget Jones' Diary'. I know. I'm a guy and I didn't go with a woman. But I went. I'll confess. I went to one of the most anticipated 'chick flicks' in years without a woman. I don't know. I just feel that the whole 'chick flick', 'guy movie' thing is a disservice. If the movie is good, why shouldn't everyone see it? If the movie is bad, no one should see it. Calling 'Someone Like You' a 'chick flick' does a disservice to females. Does that mean that they like tepid, recycled cr*p? I hope not.

I had a feeling I would like 'Bridget Jones' Diary', which is why I went on opening night, sitting in the middle of hundreds of women with their boyfriends and groups of female friends.

I was surprised by how much I liked it.

Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a young, single woman living in London. At 32, she begins to wonder why she can't have a meaningful relationship. She begins to wonder why she isn't married. Her mother is no help. She attempts to fix Bridget up with Mark D'Arcy (Colin Firth), a former childhood friend. Things don't go especially well and she runs into the arms of her boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). Their relationship blooms, hot and heavy, until...

'Bridget Jones' Diary' is certainly not the most original movie in the world. It is pretty evident who Bridget will end up with in the end. One of the things that makes the film great is the journey. Bridget has to deal with Cleaver's boss, an older gentleman who cannot remember her name, a lecherous 'uncle', three friends, a mother and father who are having their own crisis and her own relationships with D'Arcy and Cleaver. There are a lot of funny lines in the film, lines that are that much funnier because they arise from only slightly exaggerated circumstances.

Zellweger is terrific. From the moment she opens her mouth, any doubts about a Texan pulling off a convincing British accent disappear. She becomes a young British woman, and they are very different from young American women. She has the mannerisms, the tastes, the size, the accent of a young British woman. Zellweger received a Golden Globe award for 'Nurse Betty", also a great film, and deserves another one for this role.

Usually, a film with ongoing voice over sort of sends me over the edge. However, the voiceover in 'Diary' is very good. It serves to highlight points in the film, rather than bridge them and make up for a lacking narrative.

Grant plays a character very different from his ultra-romantic, slightly dithering standard (see 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' and 'Notting Hill' for prime examples) and he reveals that he actually has a bit of range.

Firth is a real find in this film. Usually relegated to period British films, Firth portrays a very handsome man who gets on Jones' nerves. His ability to woo Jones' provides for some very romantic moments. Zellweger and Firth are a great, romantic couple. The fact that they have to work for the relationship only adds to the authenticity of the story.

Jones' mum and dad are played by Gemma Jones and Jim Broadbent. Each is a very good actor, but their story seems tacked on and irrelevant. It only serves to draw us out of the main story, rather than compliment it.

The third act has problems. Primarily, it goes on too long. We already know who Jones' is going to end up with, get to the scene in which it happens. The third act reminded me a bit of the television series 'Moonlighting' and the reason the series drove its viewers mad. The series took forever to get David and Maddie together. 'Diary' takes a long time to reach the inevitable.

Overall, Diary, I really enjoyed 'Bridget Jones's Diary' and can't understand this whole 'chick flick' moniker it has received. If a film is good, shouldn't everyone go to see it?

This book is such tripe....absolutely awful, badly written, annoying - Wolf is unoriginal and bland as beige. Someone left this at my friend's resturant and I thought I would give it a whirl....big mistake! Don't buy this unless you think that 'Ashlee Simpson' is talented or 'Phantom of the Opera' is the best opera EVAH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilariously Funny!
I didn't think I would ever come across another character who would make me laugh the same way Becky Bloomwood (of the Shopaholic Series) did.

DIARY OF A MAD BRIDE is the side-splitting accounts of Amy Thomas, a magazine editor, who is planning her own wedding after vowing not to become a Bride(zilla) like many of her friends.
She wants her wedding to resonate with the same unmatched qualities of her love for her fiance Stephen. In this process she finds that love is one-of-a-kind, but that weddings are a celebration to be relished NOT always matchless.

This book serves as a comic relief as well as a tutorial guide for all women who ever dreamed, are in the process of, or even are someone's bride.

I really enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly bland
I picked this up at LaGuardia on a flight out of NYC- I can't resist a novel that promises lurid sex with the backbone of an actual plot. The first few chapters were fairly engaging but it became redundant and tedious thereafter. While it contains some mediocre sex and a mediocre plot, you just never feel anything for the characters to transcend all that mediocrity. The story was as superficial as the characters and while it may have been intentional- as a metaphor for the lives of the girls- it didn't work very well.I was left feeling like I couldn't care less if things turned out fine for the heroine or not. This book feels like it was written languorously in the first 2/3, then sped up to get published on time in the latter 1/3.The only real bit of tension and intrigue is treated with the tired gimmick of skipping ahead to the future where you see that things worked out in the end but you don't see how they got to that point.I'm sorry I can't be more positive, but this book was a real disappointment.

2-0 out of 5 stars WEIRD
This book is weird.I did find it an easy read for the first half of the book and then a bore the second half.It is about a High-End Escort who makes... wait.. only $350/hour?From what I understand that's hardly high end in most US cities. In NYC where this escort is supposed to be living it's barely above low-end.The way the character describes her schedule there's no way a girl who charges that little can afford the high priced restaurants/bags/shoes/apartment, etc.. that the character lavishes herself in.In fact, after doing the math, a person can probably just about make ends meet in NYC under those circumstances.
It reminds me of the show Friends. Here all these poor young people trying hard to make a living at acting/catering/ etc...are still able to live in these Amazing NY apartments... plus they and all their friends and extras in the background are caucasian... Yeah.. That's JUST what NYC is like.RIIIGHT.
I found the book to have its moments, but mostly it was just plain inplausible.

1-0 out of 5 stars boring piffle
Absolute waste of time.No plot and does not have a story.Total bore. Quan is trying to be like Candice Busnell in that she is trying to make it read like "Sex In The City" with prostitutes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Improves one's mind
"Kissing your hand may make you feel very good but a diamond bracelet lasts forever." So says Lorelei Lee in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes." With the emergence of Lorelei, Anita Loos invented the chick-lit genre as we know it, with witty looks at love, jewelry, and gold-digging in the sparkling 1920s.

"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is the diary of Lorelei Lee, a pretty young flapper originally from Little Rock. Since she has managed to get engaged to a married man, and might be hit with a scandal, Lorelei goes overseas. She cuts a gold-digging swathe through Europe, dazzling wealthy men, seeing the "Eyefull" Tower, and recording thoughts both witty and vapid.

Loos followed up her hit novel with "But Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes." The sequel is the story of Lorelei's travelling buddy Dorothy, as told by Lorelei. Dorothy has led a more colorful life -- she started off in the circus before heading to NYC. There, she became a Ziegfield Follies Girl, and then a "companion" to wealthy men.

Anita Loos's "Gentlemen" books first started when Loos encountered a starlet who had men tripping over themselves to help her with her things. Loos was as pretty, as young, and much smarter, but nobody helped her. What was different? Loos was a brunette, and the starlet was a blonde. You do the math.

Loos had a fun, deft sense of humor. She skewered flappers and/or gold-diggers, wealthy men, and the social mores of the 1920s. She also deliberately litters her books with misspellings and run-on sentences, adding to the feeling of overal ditziness. At the same time, her books are such good light fun that they can be read without taking note of the satire.

"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" gives a wink-nudge look at the flapper era, while giving us the origins of the present-day lite chick-lit genre. Fun, fluffy and amusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly entertaining
This is a great little book (actually, two books in one).I laughed put loud throughout it and hoped that it would never end."Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is rightly considered a classic, its sharp and bitingly witty insight is something one never seems to see in a book today (indeed, humour in a book today seems to be rare - sometimes it seems that all new fiction books are depressing and morbid; and if you feel this way too then you should read Loos' clever and refreshing novels). This is a classuc that you will want to read over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wry, funny and timeless
If you appreciate wry humor and satire, wonderfully written, this is the book for you. A quick read that never disappoints. Every gentleman should read this by the time he turns 25. ... Read more

This is a very cute little organizer, and uses two 1.5v batteries, FYI...so it is actually pretty easy to replace them. You can also remove the calculator/matchmaker and put your favorite picture on the front page which would then show through to the cover.Super cute and useful as an organizer and address book!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have ever felt like the only one...
Now you know you are not alone. Laurie Notaro calls to so many different aspects of things people actually do but will NEVER EVER say they did, that it will leave you in hysterics.
Being in College reading laurie in Java magazine, and the Rep she always made me feel that perhaps I wasnt the only wierd Kid out in the world. Crazy stuff just happends to some people and Laurie is one of them. May I also say that even in real life Laurie is gracious and polite and funny. Even when a particularly crazy fan in all black (and 21 years old at the time) mentions the dead cat in front of a bunch of aspiring mature woman who immidiately cringe even when it is explained because none of them managed to read the book and do not know the hilarity of the entire situation.

if you have ever fallen down in public while sober for no reason, Had a severely embarrassing food moment in public, or If you are scared of public bathrooms, locker rooms and high school reunions buy this book, read it and read it again. It is more than worth it, since it will make you laugh and realize, everyone else is the wierd one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great light and happy reading
this author is one hysterical woman. On the subway I laughed out loud at her funny and brazen life and love that this is so painfully honest.DOctors visits, granparents, and bad neighbors all make the grade.I whizzed through this b/c it was that good and that entertaining. you don't have a pulse if you don't laugh at the reckless behavior and silliness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written
This is the best book ever written. Hands Down. I laughed and laughed and laughed. If you read this book and become concerned with Laurie's "underlying alcohol addiction" then you are not a member of The Idiot Girls Action Adventure Club. I am in fact a cardholding member (well as soon as Laurie gets around to sending out the cards). BUY THIS BOOK! TWICE! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

One of the titles for the younger crowd in the Beginners Books series, My Book About Me has an unusual interactive twist--you make it up as you go along. On each page there's something new to complete, from "I weigh ___ pounds" to "My teeth. I counted them. I have ___ up top. I have ___ downstairs."It's a simple idea, but with a surprising amount of educational value--getting children to name their home country, to recognize and draw in the color of their own eyes, learn their telephone number and address, to name favorite clothes, foods, and colors, and more. Finally, there's a two-page spread where each owner of the book can write his or her own story. Illustrator Roy McKie's style is halfway between the P.D. Eastman of Are You My Mother and the mainstream Seuss of Cat in the Hat and Thidwick: The Big-Hearted Moose. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book my parents ever bought me!
I am so happy that this book is still being printed!I still like to flip through mine and see what I wrote as my favorite song was when I was 6, how many freckles I had, etc... I urge any parent to buy this book for their children-- It creates the greatest memories and it is also fun for the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Awesome, Awesome
I had this book as a little girl...and 30 years later, I still have it. I bought this for my son from the "toothfairy". He's 5 and can write basic ABC's, numbers and count. Very fun to fill out, keeps a high energy child very interested. This book provides many fun activites in order to be able to answer the questions in the book. His favorite part is fnding people to put their autographs in one particular section.

A must have for anyone with a child who can do some basic writing and counting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
I was happy to find this book still on the market as I had recieved one of these books from my grandmother when I was six and had fun filling it out with my mom. I still have the book although it's not in good shape after all these years. It is still fun to look back and remember what I was like when I was a young child. I plan to get one for each of my children and another for myself to transfer my childhood information into before my old one is completely lost. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has Bite
My Chaotic Life is an appropriate title for a journal that serves as a record of high school memories! It's both crazy and fun, and it provides all the spunk the title promises. There are no too perfect Sandra Dee memories here, no cheesy hearts and flowers, and no cookie cutter questions either. Without neglecting the essential stuff, this book manages to have sas, attitude, and style. On the edge, but not over it, the illustrations are hip, the questions are clever, and the moment is definitely captured. This journal is the perfect creative scrapbook for people who think out of the box; it's a fabulous place to record original thoughts and unique experiences. I would recommend this book for any student with individuality and personality. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How stereotypical.
I don't understand how anybody could find this "good for them" or feeling like they are "self-discovering themselves".

It's horrible how the writers of this, think there are only 4 kinds of people in the world. This is destructive to individualism and finding who you really are. What if there really ONLY was 4 kinds of people in this world? How terrible would that be?! The world would stop turning.

So kids, don't buy this mind-numbing, spirit-crushing thing. Get a blank piece of paper instead, and write there how YOU feel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who Admits They Are Dysfunctional?
A cutsey journal geared towards young girls but fun for anyone. It even contains a test to tell just how dysfunctional you really are.

This journal has pages of crazy graphics and fonts, places for pictures of people who make you gag, lines to record your lies and mischievousness and many quotes from famously naughty people.A great gift for teenage girls as most of the questions are geared toward their mentality. Adults might find it fun to remember the old glory days as well. Silly and playful and fun for the young at heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really cool and cute!
I ordered this book and when I got it I couldn't wait to start filling it out!! It's a book for us people who need direction in filling out a journal. And this isn't an ordinary journal but a light-hearted therapist who listens to your life's hardships and lets you laugh about them. I would recommend this book for the 17 and older crowd because younger people couldn't fill as much out (because it has questions about all sorts of things, ranging from your first boyfriend, first hang-over, ugliest outfit, most demeaning job and...etc)

Anyways, if this sounds appealing...at least check it out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Not Easy Being Queen
I could not imagine why I would enjoy this book. The idea of being a beauty queen doesn't appeal, I am not from the South, I don't think the only thing men are good for is buying me jewelry. So for several years after The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love came out, I ignored it. Then I heard Jill Conner Browne on the car radio and nearly ran off the road from laughing.

The Book of Love is a ridiculously disguised excuse for Browne to dish out heaping servings of advice. It is all good-natured and upbeat, if not always prim and ladylike, if you catch my drift. The Sweet Potato Queens, who receive the ceremonial title of "Tammy" upon reaching Queendom, all know the magic words to get a man to do anything you want him to. They know the Best Advice Ever Given in the History of the Entire World. And they reveal all in this, the first Sweet Potato Queens book.

Fortunately, it is not necessary to dress up like a Sweet Potato Queen to benefit from the Book of Love. In fact, the SPQ costumes look rather like drag queen ensembles. In any case, if you get the audio version, just be careful while you're driving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous advice on becoming a queen for life.
I am not one who normally likes Southern Writers, but when they are as positive and funny as Jill Conner Browne, I will gladly make an exception. This book kept me laughing from first page to last, while it dealt out such a self-affirming attitude about life that I came away from it feeling much more empowered than I went in.

I would have to say that the Sweet Potato Queens are not for everyone. Teetotalers, Bible-thumpers, and prudes will not be pleased. But if you want to be a Queen, not just for a day, but for the rest of your life, and you can stand a little raucous good humor, then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jill Conner Browne, nobody does it better
There is something about all Jill Conner Browne's books...that make me want to scream - in shock and delight. I don't know if it's her innocent honesty about being not so innocent, or her flat out tell it like it is, but her books entertain and take us away to a place where life seems more interesting. I heard Jill speak at the Erma Bombeck Writers conference, and she was just as funny, in person as in her books. She writes like she talks and this book is no exception. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More than it seems...and the price is right
When you consider how much blank books are going for these days, this book is a bargain even though it's paperback. It has a page for every tarot card, with a brief meaning, and plenty of blank space where you can write your own personal notes about what that card means to you.

In addition, though the blurb doesn't even mention this, it comes with a miniature version of the "Tarot Nova" in cardboard, which you can "tear along the dotted lines" and then you have a little tarot deck. It's quite small, so it might not be of much use except as a conversation piece.Or, you could get a box/pouch/etc. and carry this deck in your purse in case you feel the urge to do a spur-of-the-moment reading in the coffee shop. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great book by an even better Soldier
I have had the privilege of knowing Monroe Mann personally which prompted me to read his book. Monroe is the type of fellow who can drift into your life briefly and leave his mark.

His book is a honest uncut un polished journal that speaks to EXACTLY what every young soldier remembers about basic Training. Reading Monroe's book was like taking a walk back in my life ten years ago.

An excellent read for old soldiers and a fine book for those considering service. New troops need to take Monroe's total honesty with a grain of salt. When you live Basic training it seems impossible, until you walk on that parade field with almost 300 years of American history that you are not a part of. Monroe is a fine officer who is credit to the service. If he can overcome his fears, frustration, and challenges to rise from a sideline sitter to a professional of the finest caliber should encourage any reader to seek his or her opportunity to place service above self and find a way a way to bring peace to our troubled world.

    Thank you Monroe

3-0 out of 5 stars Brutally Honest Account
Just finished reading this book. It's one heck of a coincidence that my wife is a graduate of the same college (Franklin) and recognized most of the names LT Mann listed in the Forward. The other coincidence is that I am an independent
film director/producer with a couple of projects under my belt, so when he mentioned his aspirations to be on the silver screen, I understood. I have a further confession; as much as I wanted to say "Oh Stop Complaining" I thought back to my Cadet Basic Training experience while in Army ROTC- and I was right there with him. One minute I hated it, the next I loved it, in the end I mostly hated the experience, it was never put into context, at 18 its important to be taught what the big picture is and the why, I was usually depressed, aboutas much as he was, and my entire life's goal was to be an Army Officer.Unlike LT Mann, I was not able to continue the program, but after 9/11, I felt I could do a little more for my country, [I was too old to enlist], but when I found out about the NY STATE Guard a couple of years ago I joined, and currently find myself in the Basic Officers Course at Camp Smith, (which is the main reason I purchased the book). His story puts things into perspective for me, and unlike LT Mann I am enjoying my experience. Most likely because it's nothing like LT Mann's experience, [The State Guard is not a Combat force], but I am serving, and I am proud for that. All in all I enjoyed the book, by the end I felt like I had gone through all the training with him, so if your looking for an honest first hand account, from the heart, this is the book for you. Lest I forget; Best wishes to Monroe in Iraq.
[I found out he's over there because I used the email he listed at the end of the book, and he responded, I do not know the author personally, nor does my wife.>>

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Disappointing
I read this book hoping that it would provide some insight into the Army National Guard experience.I was disappointed by the focus on the author's petty complaints and his obvious attempts at inflating his ego.He really wants to be a famous actor, and joined the National Guard to beef up his resume. The book itself is less informative than a show on the Military channel (watch Making Marines or Parris Island or Navy Seals to see what its like).

I was amazed at his efforts at self-promotion (over substance), both in the book and in real life.Visit his web page at monroemann.com (it refers to him as "Oscar Bound" in huge bold letters on the main page, and his bio hypes the standing ovations he received as a junior in high school).Read his entry at imdb.com (which he apparently wrote), then read the 5 star reviews on this page and you'll see that they are written in the same voice, and that he or his close friends are the only ones hyping this book.Maybe Mr. Mann will become a famous actor some day.It will be a good day because the truth will finally match the hype.

Really, don't waste your time or money on this book, it just isn't worth it -- and it will probably encourage the author to try and write another book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Adorable!
This book is so much fun! It's full of intriguing questions (for example, If you disappeared and your mate put out an APB for you, what would it say?) and cute illustrations, and it isn't "mushy" like most other bridal journals I've seen.I actually brought this book with us on the honeymoon, and my husband and I filled it out on the plane. We had a blast laughing out loud and reminiscing, and look forward to reading it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and fun wedding journal for anyone newly engaged...
What a breath of fresh, creative air I got when I bought this book. Ladies, you can't go wrong if you like art, whimsy, & humor. I have purchased the Vera Wang Book, Martha Stewart Wedding Planner, Legendary Brides, the Best of Martha Stewart...those are great for gathering ideas and writing about your budget...This book is for YOU. It's fun to write in, and you can fill it out with your fiance (you can write about his bad habits...but be careful, he can write about yours too!) I can't imagine having any other wedding journal;Plus, my fiance likes it too! It's a journal with places for you to write information about the bride and groom, the first date(which this journal calls "One Enchanted Evening"), from everything to how you got engaged, to cute yet sophisticated little pop up flaps to lift up and write about your wedding details. It contains a "Magic Spinner" that you can ask questions about your big day, and flaps to put cuts outs from magazines, etc. The artwork is very cool, and the whole idea of this journal is amazing. My fiance and I love the space under The Reception where you can write: "Who drank too much and acted like a fool," "How much moola we collected from the dollar dance," etc. If you are looking for something creative, artistic, and full of space to write everything about your wedding day, this is it. I bought it for myself, and have gotten two for gifts, and each person has loved it. Enjoy! ... Read more
