    Editorial Review

Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home.Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Score
I think that this soundtrack is very under-rated for how great it really is. I love this soundtrack so much, and the music goes so well with the movie. Although it is hard to find a copy at a reasonable price, you think Disney could re-release it. My favorite track on here is Reunited, which is at the end of the movie when the pets make it home.

5-0 out of 5 stars !!! HOMECOMING KINGS AND QUEENS !!!
HONESTLY, WHO DIDNT CRY WHEN THEY SAW SHADOW LIMPIN HIS WAY OUTTA THAT BUSH? COME ON, IF YOU SAY NO YOURE A LIAR! THIS MOVIE IS THE ONLY MOVIE FROM MY CHILDHOOD THAT STILL JERKS AT MY HEART STRING AND BRINGS THAT LITTLE TEAR OF JOY TO MY EYE EVERYTIME I SEE IT. MY KID LOVES IT AS MUCH AS I DO, AND I TELL YOU, WE GO THROUGH AT LEAST A BOX OF KLEENEX EVERY RUN THROUGH!

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
This movie was the best I've ever seen. I love animals a lot.

A family moves to San Fransisco; leaving a freind on a farm to watch their pets. Sassy(the cute, prissy, and fun-loving himalayan)is stuck with her dog friends, Shadow and Chance. The three pets go on a journey through the mountains, trying to find their way home. The adventure goes from huge grizzlies to wild mountain lions. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Charlize Theron is the latest stunning blonde to be hanging around some big ape in a Hollywood movie, this one a remake of the 1949 semi-classic with echoes of the superior King Kong. Theron plays the daugher of an American researcher killed by poachers in Africa. The baby gorilla left in her care grows up to become a hugely tall and broad specimen named Joe, living in the mountains as a mostly unseen legend among people who live there. Along comes an eco-minded emissary (Bill Paxton) from a California sanctuary, who talks the jungle girl into providing safe haven for Joe at the L.A. facility. The transition is not without discomfort, but everything is aggravated via a conspiracy of poachers to get Joe into their own greedy hands. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) uses a combination of special-effects techniques to give Joe life and personality, and he succeeds quite effectively. The requisite giant-ape-goes-amok scenes are all in place--a couple of them pretty intense--as is a conclusion that finds the simian hero performing a stunning feat of escalation. Underwood attempts to give a little modern spin to some classic Hollywood conventions regarding wild hearts lost in civilization, and the results are pretty agreeable family fare. --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MIGHTY NICE MONKEY BUSINESS
Sure, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG is a somewhat mushy movie.SURE, it has all the cliches you expect.Sure, some of the special effects are a little rough. But sure, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG is a wonderful entertaining movie, sure to bring a little tear to the eye, and entertain even the hardest cynic. In updating the 1949 classic, director Ron Underwood (who gave us the first TREMORS)has pleasantly remade the original to make it more accessible to these ever changing times. From the opening scenes where little Mika Boorem (Hearts of Atlantis) and her doctor mommy Linda Purl are besieged by heartless poachers to the last thirty minutes where some really exciting climactic action scenes occur, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG delivers the poignant tale of an oversized gorilla who just wants to be loved. The special effects crew do a fine job on giving Joe his own personality with the especially effective use of Joe's eyes, and ironically, he and Charlize Theron have a remarkable screen chemistry, actually better than her chemistry with co-star Bill Paxton. But then the movie isn't really about Paxton and Theron; it's about Joe and Charlize. The dynamic Regina King (from RAY) does a nice turn as the doctor who also bonds with Joe; and even self-centered David Paymer as the conservancy head finally warms up to Joe.Of course, a movie like this would be nothing without villains, and we have two good ones here:Croatian actor Rade Sherbedgia wants revenge on Joe because after shooting Theron's mother, he loses a finger and thumb to the then infant Joe; Peter Firth (Equus) is the more compassionate (?) sidekick who claims that Rade is "not a hunter, but a murderer."The climax in the heart of LA, on the freeways and finally at Palisades park delivers nicely.
I wasn't expecting a whole lot when we bought this movie, but it was a pleasant surprise and I recommend it for family viewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best movie ever just got even Better!
This movie is really good to own. Lots of fun for the hole family to injoy! This movie is really nice. The first time I watched it. I had to own it! I think you might injoy this film!

3-0 out of 5 stars MIGHTY Family fun
A feel good story for the whole family, don't expect "Mighty Joe Young" to knock you off your feet.Instead, watch it for the good "Beauty and the Beast" storyline that is well outlined for any age group to watch.
There is some violence in this movie, and smaller children may be frightened by "Joe" at first, but if they can control themselves through the first few minutes, they'll fall in love with him. There is very little, if any, foul language.
The story is simple:Girl and giant ape are moved to the city, girl and giant ape want out, man in love with girl helps, everyone ends up happy.
If you're interested, "Joe" looks fairly realistic, especially for the time this flick was made.
Overall, a good family show that all can watch.I highly recommend it for its entertainment value. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney's success with animation in the '90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid) worked on the songs, the best of which is sung by Billy Joel, who provides the voice of (the Artful) Dodger. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favourite Disney Film!
I saw this film when I was 15 years old. I love this film very much. The story is perfect, and the music is my favourite part of this film. "Once upon a time in New York City" is my favourite song in this movie, the melody is perfect and this song always give me courage. The characters in this movie are lovely, especially Oliver and his little master, Jenny! And Rita is a beatiful female. If you're a Disney fan, this film is worth viewing to you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Disney's standards!
I recently picked up a copy of Disney's animated "classic," Oliver & Company, a somewhat twisted retelling of Charles Dickens' novel, 'Oliver Twist'.What we have here is a ridiculous story about a kitten, taking the role of Oliver lost in the streets of New York and picked up by a bunch of street dogs lead by the poor Fagin, an outcasted, poor man who's problem is the need to pay a huge debt he has with mean Mr. Sykes, a gangster of the most evil kind. However, you really can't feel bad for Fagin, since he borrowed money it is his duty and he should have to pay back, not be able to get off the hook easily by literally getting rid of the gangster Sykes.Oliver joins this street-wise gang for a few days until he is brought home by the kind Jenny Foxworth, a somewhat remade of the sweet orphan girl, Penny from a previous Disney release, The Rescuers. The story-line is pretty strong, not at all like the original Dickens' tale but rather well-plotted, the animation is good but the whole film has a dirty feeling due to too many details in the backgrounds of the streets of New York.

It's films like these that give a bad name to the Disney animation releases of the '80s, a period in which Disney release lack-luster films such as The Great Mouse Detective (1986) or The Black Cauldron (1985), which were unable to capture the charm they had achieved previously with hits like The Rescuers (1977) or Pete's Dragon (Also, 1977).The film is good for a one time viewing, this DVD lacks quality, so it is very unlikely that you will find it worthy of your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Movie with Great Heart
Disney's Oliver and Company fully deserves the five stars.I first saw the movie on video in the early nineties, and I must have been in a bad mood, because it didn't stick with me.But I just saw it again, in fact I watched it two times in a row.My husband watched it the second time with me, and he loved it. I think that this video should be in every child's personal collection. It has such a wonderful message of believing in yourself during tough times, compassion, friendship, love, and doing the right thing.

Set in Manhattan, the backgrounds and art of Oliver and Company are a treat.I did not appreciate the art of this movie the first time I saw it.The backgrounds and scenery are brushed with dark browns and blues, evoking the simultaneous urban grit and inexplicable pull of New York City.

Based on Charles Dicken's Oliver Twist, Oliver is a homeless kitten who falls in with a gang of stray dogs. The gang is led by Fagan, voiced by the irreplaceable Dom Deluise.(What would animated movies be without Dom Deluise?)Oliver soon meets Jenny, a lonely, loving little rich girl, and he is torn between his two families. The evil Sykes, to whom Fagan owes money, has plans to hold Jenny for ransom.

Billy Joel and Bette Midler provide their speaking and singing voices as Dodge and Georgette. The original songs in this movie are so special.

    Editorial Review

A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intact after almost thirty years without watching it
At shortly over an hour of runtime, "Dumbo" will always leave you wanting to watch it again and again. I watched it again yesterday, after close to thirty years without watching it, and the same feelings I had when I first caught a glimpse of it came back intact. The storyline is simple: a baby elefant (Dumbo) gets separated from his mother, and he works his way through obstacles with the help of his mouse-friend (Timothy), to get his mom back.

The animation from 1941 couldn't be more basic: simple figures, pastel backgrounds most of the time -nothing fancy. Yet the combination of it all, with some classic music tracks and unforgettable lines, make out of "Dumbo" a movie for the ages, one that has survived time, and that will continue to appeal to everyone no matter how old, no matter when. In particular, since I first saw it in Spanish when I was a kid, I loved being able to play the Spanish language track, and relive the dialogues the way I remembered them. This 60th Anniversary Edition DVD truly belongs in your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars I be done seen about everything when I see an elephant fly
The stork delivers a baby elephant to Mrs. Jumbo, a female elephant who is a veteran of the circus. However, when the newborn is ridiculed because of his truly enormous ears and dubbed "Dumbo," Jumbo just can not take it.One day a circus customer over steps his boundaries, Jumbo protects her baby, and punished by being locked away. She is kept separate from Dumbo and the other elephants.Dumbo is left with the other circus elephants that quickly segregate themselves from him.Dumbo's act is relegated to the butt end of jokes with the circus' clowns.Nevertheless, Timothy Q. Mouse sees more then just big ears in Dumbo. He assists Dumbo in achieving his full potential, and once again seeing his mother.

"His disgrace is our own shame."

Ben Sharpsteen (Fantasia and Pinocchio) directs Dumbo.Dumbo is a much underrated Disney classic. The film delivers a life lesson: everyone is different. One should not make fun of someone because they are different.Once they spread their wings and fly, it is a beautiful thing.Sharpsteen began the film in a dark fashion that included thunderstorms.By the end of the film you had dancing elephant, pink elephants, and funny crows.Dumbo had sharp contrasts, but the movie came full circle.

"Those city folks are sure in for a surprise."

Dumbo does more then just teach one of life's most important lessons, it is also fun.The film includes multiple animals.I remember last year while watching this film again for the first time in a long time I had forgotten what a great character Timothy Q. Mouse was.He is the type of character you emphasize to children: "this is the type of human being you want to be, one who sees the good in everyone."The crows are also extremely fun characters, probably my second favorite in the film after Timothy Q. Mouse. They provide additional comic relief. The scene where Timothy Q. Mouse and Dumbo gets drunk, and they see dancing and pink elephants is very similar to the Alice in Wonderland scene with strange creatures.

"Your Mom ain't crazy, just broken hearted."

I believe Dumbo is a must have for your DVD collection.Despite being underrated, it is a very, very solid film.I am not saying it is a top five Disney film, maybe not even one of my top ten favorites (right on the cusp). However, it is an extremely well done and well put together film.I also credit this film as being a film for all ages.

    "You're a climax!"

    Grade: A

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for the kids.
"Dumbo" was the first Disney's film I view. It was sorrow and beautiful. The story of Dumbo told the children that mother's love is pure and deep, and it will last forever. The story told us that we should learn how to love people around us. And it told mothers that children need mother's love no matter they are young or grew up. I think the story told me that if I try my best, don't afraid of anything, I will succeed! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with theirdevoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? Only by meeting the irrepressible alley cat O'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. After they get a taste of the wide dangerous world, he guides them home, and Edgar gets his just desserts at the wrong end of a horse. As always, it's really the voices rather than the animation that are the heart of the Disney magic: Phil Harris is brilliant as O'Malley, Eva Gabor as Duchess is... well... Eva Gabor; but perhaps the most memorable turns are by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, who turn the old hounds Napoleon and Lafayette into a couple of bumbling Southern-fried rednecks. Their scenes with Edgar, and the musical numbers with Scat Cat and his cool-dude band, are classic. Most striking about seeing The Aristocats now is how deeply Disney's style of animation has changed since this was at the cutting edge in 1970. Perhaps the nostalgic, dated feel are just a result of being plonked down in Belle Epoque Paris, but the illustrations are fussier (a pity) and the animation and overall pace much less frenetic (sometimes a relief) than in more recent efforts such as Aladdin. --Richard Farr ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Charmingly fun Disney movie
Cats, kittens, dogs, and music -- a simple film kids will love. Horrified that his mistress's will leaves everything to her cats, the butler "kidnaps" Madame the cat and her kittens, and drops them off in the remote countryside so he can claim his mistress's fortune as his. Madame, with the help of O'Malley the alley cat, a couple of geese, and Scat Cat and his gang, must now find their way back home to their mistress.

The song numbers are wonderfully catchy, and the characters are loveable. The film is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.33:1, which, contrary to other reviewers and according to www.ultimatedisney.com , "is almost certainly the aspect ratio of the original animation, even if the case implies that a modification has occurred." Overall a wonderful purchase for your children.

The Aristocats is a wonderful movie to enjoy with the whole family!!! There are great sin-a-longs, for example: "Everybody Wants to be a Cat" has always been my favorite!!! Thanks for reading my review!
