5-0 out of 5 stars Great game for a 6 year old!!!
I bought my daugther this game for her 6th birthday and so far it is her favorite. She picked it up right away and it's easy for her to do! She also got the Barbie Princess and Pauper game, the Nicktoons Freeze Frame, and Disney Princess game and this one is much easier than all of them. I even enjoy playing it!

3-0 out of 5 stars difficult for beginners
This game is an ok game, like others have said, for younger kids its a bit difficult. One thing tho yoiu do not hae to write down the password after each level, just when you decide you want to stop. This way when you turn the gameboy back on you can get back to where you left off.Dora just needs the glasses to get past the bush or whatever is blocking her path and then you can take them off and see clearly. It is necessary to get al the crystals which can be pretty difficult for the usual Dora fan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Hard for Younger Gamers, Get Pirate Pigs Game instead!
Super Spies opens with screen shots of Dora and friends telling you what the problem is and what you're going to need to do in written form.So if you're kids don't read yet, they just get some SILENT pictures to button press thru. Then the game starts, and they need to be able to watch for the backpack image in the corner of the sceen, and then know to press it, find the right item, and continue. The first item she needs is glasses so she can see hidden ways thru shrubs or objects. The problem is that with the glasses on it's hard to tell what's happening.Once you finally finish a level, you need to write down a password to save your place.UGH.I was hoping for cute Dora music, and easier game play since Dora is really aimed at the preschoolers.Game has annoying repetitive "game" beeping sounds, but not Dora music, with the exception of "I'm the map" everytime you advance to the map section.Big Bummer.I then bought the Pirate Pig game for Dora and it has what I was looking for!Music & easier gamelay! So pass on this and get the Pirate game! You'll be glad you did! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Confusing If You Stick With It - - Persistence Pays
... I give it 4 stars for the reasons mentioned further below. It is given 1 less star from perfection by me because 1) AT First, it is not user-friendly & clear-cut AND because overall the minigames (while original, ingenious, challenging, diverse, thought-provoking, engaging, humorous, etc.) are truly on the difficult side, even in Normal Play mode.

Once you comprehend the purpose of the items bought/granted, converting items to power notes, planting items on another's bingo board, winning stars from the mini games to place on bingo board, trading crystals to buy power notes, and MOST IMPORTANTLY USING YOUR POWER NOTES CONSTANTLY DURING MINI GAMES TO ENHANCE YOUR WINNING CAPABILITIES, this game is right on the money.Speaking of money, for the lowered asking price of this game, you cannot go wrong. The sound, color, music and graphics are superb, crisp and pleasing.

My 9 year old son has played this game for four days straight, and continues to enjoy it.He is pretty adept with game play controls and is an above average player, yet he would lose often and was not disappointed or discouraged--just resolved to conquering the particular minigame as you can PRACTICE as much as you want.I, too, have played a couple of full games with him and was not bored; neither was I angered by not winning much. The minigames are engrosing and quite fun; I do not regret buying this game.

Pros:Practice Mode, MiniGame Explanations, Lengthy MiniGames, Enjoyable and Diverse Games; Graphics & Sound are Great

Cons:Not for Under 6-Year Old Crowd Without an Adult; Mini-Games a Little on the Tough Side

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great game to play with your kids!!
My 5 year old daughter and my 10 year old son love this game.I sat down and played with it one day and have played it every day since. It took a little time for my 5 year old to understand the idea of the bingo card on the board game but once she figured out how to buy items, win stars in the mini game and place block items on other peoples bingo boards it has been a blast. This game is a lot like Mario Party only with the twist of the bingo cards. If you let the game run until after credits you will be rewarded with disney cards, there is no fast way to get to them but the kids enjoy looking through all the characters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing game board play
Being a fan of Mario Party and Shrek Party, I thought Disney's Party would also be enjoyable. Unfortunately, I am irritated that I paid $40 for this thing. The game play is confusing and takes forever to set up and explain, the on-screen text (for the directions) is really hard to read and is extremely verbose.

The mini-games are fun once you figure out how to play them, but game play is lame. You don't get to roll dice and move along a board. Instead, there is a little roulette that determines where you go. You have to play a bingo-style game with items and stars and there are these items, "power notes" and gems to keep track of (I can't even explain it in a way that isn't extremely confusing).

Overly convoluted, confusing, poorly designed and difficult to read - stay away from this and get Mario Party (4 or 5) or Shrek Party. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My 5-year old Loves it!
For a young girl with a simple fascination with horses, this is a cute game. However, I can see how horse aficionados may not be totally satisfied with 'realism' issues. It is not Pixar, but the graphics and realism are probably adequate for the intended audience.

My daugher was able to complete the game with some assistance in about 1 1/2 hours. Now she's playing again on her own.She enjoyed customizing her hourse and picking outfits for Barbie.

The game worked fine on my daughters Windows XP/Celeron system.

    (...)

2-0 out of 5 stars This is NOTHING like owning your own horse
This game stinks. Ok, well the graphics are ok, but PLEASE!! PUT THE HORSE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE!!! I mean, COME ON!! You don't wear makeup when you go riding, you don't just jump on a pony and say "giddy-up' and TREES ARE NOT IDENTICAL!!! My Mum and Dad bought this for my sister (age-6) and even she thought it was crap! Mattel, please put some thought into your games. I own my own horse (a gray TB mare, Sterling) and this is not how you ride. Please try harder next time. Very disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Small Caution
Excellent books. But be warned: you may have to translate some of the awkward phrases and expressions that seem to pop up throughout Cleary's books. I thought she might be European, until I read her bio today. Expressions like "Gay" (meaning happy) and "Crayoning" (which perplexed my daughter until I explained that in America we call it "Coloring.")Things like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless
I read and reread these books to my daughters, and I am delighted to be able to read them to my granddaughters! It is so much fun to snuggle in bed and read Ramona books!Ageless and priceless...

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a favorite
I read these books as a child, and loved them.Ramona deals with childhood tribulations (fear of going to the principal's office, worrying about her family when her father loses his job, having to play with her friend's little sister whom she detests) that most children experience in some variation, and so a child can identify with her as they read and feel reassured by the fact that they are not the only one who has gone through these things. Also, many of her mischevious adventures are so entertaining and wonderful (for instance, when she makes a "toothpaste cake" in the bathroom sink using the entire tube of toothpaste).Even as an adult, I still find myself reaching for these sometimes to be reassured by an old friend and to re-live a childhood comfort. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EARLY CHAPTER BOOKS
When My son was younger these were among his most favorite books. He made sure we saved these so he could pass them on to his little brother to read to him once he is old enough. These are simple chapter books. They range in page count from about 68 to 96 pages I believe so they are relatively quick reads that can be read in a few nights depending upon your child's reading level. This set contains the first four books in the series:

    Book #1, DINOSAURS BEFORE DARK

Book #2, THE KNIGHT AT DAWN

Book #3, MUMMIES IN THE MORNING

    Book #4, PIRATES PAST NOON

The First, Dinosaurs Before Dawn tells the story of how jack and Annie (the series stars) first find the Magic Tree House and learn how the books can transport them to magical lands and worlds. The first takes them to the Cretaceous period. Through clues and reading the book in hand they learn and discover things about dinosaurs.

In the "Knight at Dawn", jack and Annie are transported back to medieval times. They find a castle and go exploring and find themselves on the run from the castle guards and worry they will never get back to the magic tree house.

"mummies In the Morning" Jack has always been fascinated by and pick up a book that has them traveling back to ancient Egypt.Jack and Annie enter a pyramid and get lost inside.Inside they find the ghost of an Egyptian queen whose been trapped inside the pyramid for ages and Jack and Annie try to set her free.

"Pirates Past Noon"Jack and Annie picture a wonderful beach and are transported to the times of Pirates where they are capture by Captain Bones who is seeking the treasure of Captain Kidd.

These books are geared for kids from the 2nd to the 5th grade I would say. They are entertaining, imaginative reads that help teach kids about history while being fun to read as well. Some have commented that the writing, technically speaking is weak. That may be in some spots but I feel this is mostly intentional as they are writing for 6 - 10 year olds.

These books are really a joy to read and I loved reading them along with my son.I'm glad we saved them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for begining reading, grades 1 and 2
This is probably the best series to get your kid (late 1st through early 3rd grades) launched into reading chapter books. They come in sets of 4, usually focused around a theme such as needing to recover 4 books in ancient history for KingArthur's library, find one book in each adventure. But kids don't seem to get involved with these meta-plots and so the books stand on their own as simply written adventure stories.

Over time, it gets a bit formulaic and thin: Tree house appears, travel in time, get threatened by somebody/something, escape with magical help, return home.Still, your kid will be good for at least 10 books.I'd skip the earlier ones since the later are somewhat better written/produced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, poorly written...
Ok, I'll say up front that these are great stories for kids to read.I've been reading them to my 4 year old for some time, and the pace, characters, and action are all perfectly suited. Each of these books grabs his interest and makes him excited about reading more.

The problem I've got with the series is the author's skillset with the language. Some folks may want to overlook this based on the content alone; I feel this view is simple and potentially detrimental to the child. For lots of kids these are first readers, and help develop a child's view of language structure. They're going to start off mimicking the writing 'style' the see; in the case of these books, they'll be seeing a lot of poorly defined (or non-defined) paragraphs, sentence fragments, and grammatical errors. They'll be seeing poorly written examples that will help establish the basis of bad writing habits which may take a lot of work to erase.Whoever edited these books needs a new career.

That said, we skip around the series quite a bit.The latest books are comparatively excellent as far as language mechanics. There's a definite progression in writing *quality* throughout the series, and content is high for all.I just wish Pope-Osborne had taken a creative writing class or two in the beginning.

If you're reading these books to/with your child, you can do some on-the-fly editing. If your child has enough language skill to spot the mistakes, they'll be fine.Otherwise, you might want to proceed with a little caution, or skip ahead in the series. ... Read more

This is a really Neat leap pad book!My kids LOVED the movie! And were ecstatic, to get the leap pad book.It has some entertaining games, and my kids ask to play this book alot more than others. I highly recommend this book!It has alot of FUN stuff in it.I hope your children like it as much as my 7, 6, and 3 year olds do.. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Like it pretty much
Pretty nice game. The illustrations do not look exactly like the characters in the movie. They are more like cartoon illustrated (see front cover-- the illustrations inside are similar). This was a little dissappointing at first. The voices are pretty good, it has some nice songs, and teaches some educational facts about the sea.My son's favorite part is the deep sea page.

    Editorial Review

This animated feature based on the popular E.B. White book for children--about the special relationships between Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider, and Templeton the rat--is a straight adaptation from the page, with songs added. Endearing, heartbreaking, and ultimately wise, it may not please all of those with a strong attachment to the book, but it works all the same. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars one of the 50 worst films ever
Everything is wrong in the disaster as all the charm, sadness and drama of this classic is gone. Charlotte should be a hairy spider with a Lucille LaVerne type voice, not a gorgeous arachnid with Miss Reynold's soothing tones. This is a story of friendship and self-sacrifice which is totally missing. And the tragic death of Charlotte, which is the highlight of the story, is simply glossed over. Along with The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch , Charlotte's Web is one of a trio of worst children's films of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for preschool aged kids
Most movies are too scary for preschool aged children. But Charlotte's Web is perfectly tame and enjoyable. There is death, but it is presented as sad, not scary. This is the only video that my 3-year-old doesn't need to fast-forward through parts of. And, of course, she loves watching it.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Some movie!"
Wilbur (voiced by Henry Gibson) is a porker with a problem: He was born the runt of the litter and to the farmer (John Stephenson), he's not worth the price of feed. The farmer's daughter Fern (Pamelyn Ferdin) steps in and raises Wilbur as a pet. Eventually the hapless curly-tail is sold to the Zuckerman Farm, where he meets an interesting assortment of characters: There's a rude ram (Dave Madden), a gabby goose (Agnes Moorehead), and a ravenous rat (Paul Lynde) named Templeton; but lonely Wilbur finds a true friend in the kindly, wise spider who lives in an upper corner of the pigpen. The spider is called Charlotte (Debbie Reynolds) and once she learns that sweet and shy Wilbur is in danger of becoming bacon bits, she spins the words "Some Pig!" in her web.

Sweet story, soft and gentle animation, cleverly-written but sometimes annoying songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW- But sorta hard
Man this is so cool! I don't even HAVE it, my friend brought it when she came for a sleepover and we practically played it all night! It is sorta hard, especially the Jasmine part, and Belle is the easiest, however I like Cinderella. You play as all six of the princesses so it's like 6 games in one.
Game controls (Note these are for Chapter 1, and you can press start to pause and you can open chests by going in front of them and pressing A):
Belle: B to throw snow ball, left and right to move, A to jump, down to make a new snowball.
Cinderella: A to bonk Lucifer on the head, B to clean the floor, Left and right to move.
Ariel: Up down left and right to move, B to blast with the trident.
Aurora: A to turn butterflys into fairies, B to put the guys to sleep, left and right to move.
Snow White: A to jump, B to sing and put the wicked trees to sleep, Left and Right to move.
Jasmine: Up down left and right to move. Go over a switch to activate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Varying levels of difficulty
This game was my 5 year old daughter's first for her new GBA SP.She was able to play Cinderella right away, and worked her way up to Sleeping beauty and Snow White, completing all the chapters for each. She found the 2nd chapter for Belle easier than the first, simply because she didn't know that Belle could make more snowballs (we figured this out by accident).Ariel and Jasmine are still a bit too complicated for her to get through (I found them difficult the first couple of times), but it is a challenge she looks forward to.I believe this range in difficulty is a plus for the game as any child can begin it and work their way up.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Disney Classic
I'm an adult and I love video games. I chose Disney Princess because I'm an avid Disney fan. This game only took me a few hours to complete but was highly entertaining along the way. The single-player game is somewhat halting, with not a lot of room to move around (fixed paths to move in, you go where they tell you to go) in the game play but for any girls, ages reading level and up, it is fabulous. The colors are vivid and there are many levels with items you have to find while keeping your life up. I recommend this game for any Disney fan. ... Read more

My daughter got this game for her birthday & she can't stop talking about it!All of her friends want to come over & play the game, because she tells them how fun it is.Sometimes the kids need a little help from adults, but it is still great fun!A great gift to buy for someone!

My 6 year old LOVES this game. Encourages great thinking & logic skills. Teaches about process of elimination to figure out what the answer is. She can read a little but she doesn't need to to play. We just got the game & have played it only a handful of times so durability is unknown, seems as though it will hold up very well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED GAME. Actually fun for adults too. Can't wait until my 3 year old can play with us.

Well, i had recently purchased this game on April 9. it is expected april 13- 14. I read the reveiws and now i don't want this game. I plan on returning it and buying Clue. I had no idea it was for kids ages 4-8. none of my sisters are that age. I thought Clue would be hard thats why i purchased this game for my 9 year old sister and my self(12). now if i just read the instructions for clue i might find it easy. So if your s parent you should buy this only if your children are 5&6 otherwise they'll find it boring! So i guess I'll just have to return it! ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Why...why...*sob* why...
I watched this film through my fingers, too upset and horrified by what I was seeing to take in the whole view. How could the wonderful, humorous, epic Lloyd Alexander books be reduced to this? Why couldn't a respectable movie studio have picked up the license, and made a worthy film with talented actors? The entire spectacle just made me sick.

The very least Disney could have done would be to make a five-part series that covered all the books, but no. This is the only film there is, and it's not even based on The Black Cauldron. It's a muddled mix of that book (which was the second in the series) and The Book of Three (the first in the series). Blech.

And then--I can barely type this--Gwydion (forgive me if I mispelled it...) isn't in it. At all. He's one of the best characters in the entire series, and he doesn't even get a supporting role!? And that's only the beginning of the heinous omissions. There's nothing about the race to find the Cauldron, the sad trading of the magical brooch, or Taran's swallowing his pride for the good of Prydain, and that's only mentioning a few. Instead, we have some half-baked trash where Taran slashes through hoards with the magic sword Dyrnwyn for a while (when in reality he can't even draw it until he's earned the right), then giving it to the witches so he can destroy the Cauldron. Then Gurgi jumps in the cauldron at the end, but is somehow brought back. By this time, I was trying to find a way to retch and watch the movie simultaneously.

In all, this might be a decent movie to keep the kiddies occupied while you get the housework done, but why? Read them the books instead. Don't waste time and money on pointless trash.

4-0 out of 5 stars The worst Disney film... Not!
Disney's The Black Cauldron may be the most unpopular Disney animated film ever, but it is so not the worst and it isn't even bad, really. Now, forget that it was rated PG, (So yeah, other PG Disney films included the horrid "Atlantis - The Lost Empire or Home on the Range, but it also included some highlights like Lilo & Stich!) The Black Cauldron offers a soft and interesting story to watch on rainy days, with lots of fun characters, humor and charm, the only thing missing that weakens the film is the lack of songs, but the soundtrack is beautiful.

The Black Cauldron is the story of Taran, a young assistand pig-keeper who is, by his trusting master Dallben, sent on a mission to protect one of the pigs, Hen Wen from the hands of the evil Horned King, who has discovered the powers of the little girl pig and wants to use them to find the Black Cauldron and with it, rule the world.Taran travels through forests eventually losing the pig and finding himself in desperate need of help and then gets caught by the Horned King, Creeper (A troll) and his men. There he finds not only Hen Wen, but also a sweet princess named Eilonwy and a good Minstrel named Flewddur Fflam, who journey with Taran in the search for the Black Cauldron, hoping to destroy it before the Horned King has a chance of using it.
Also adding to the fun is Gurgi, a cuddly creature who longs for friends, the witches of Morva and the fun and colorful Fair Folk.

The Black Cauldron offers a fresh story, although not as fresh or moody as The Rescuers (1977), the atmosphere is close to Sleeping Beauty (1959), very dark but with lighter moments which were missing in other gloomy films like The Great Mouse Detective.

Overall, a pretty overlooked and wonderful Disney film, it has something for everyone, times of scary and dark scenes, fun, musical and simply visually perfect scenes (Like the visit to the Fair Folk's underground cave) and moments for everyone else.Animation is Disney at their finest, very detailed.

    4.4/5

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Disney "classic", but an interesting experience.
In 1985, Disney attempted to do a PG-rated swords-and-sorcery animated tale based on a good source material--Lloyd Alexander's CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN.The resulting movie had a lot of winning things going for it--for one, the animation was impressive for its time, showcasing an early mixture of CG effects.A massive underscore by Elmer Bernstein (which remains one of the best for a Disney movie) substitutes singing characters here.In addtion, there are at least some well-defined (and created) characters, notably the young, inexperienced "pig-boy" Taran, the terrifying Horned King (voiced superbly by John Hurt) and of course the two "comic" characters, Gurgi (a Gollum-like character with a childlike innocence and more loyalty--and an equally cuddly voice) and Creeper (a great baddie sidekick for a villain).

And yet the movie is considered Disney's greatest failure. It is understandable to see why: for one, the movie flopped at the box office (in fact, it took more than 10 years after its theatrical debut to finally arrive on home video). Second, in trying to compress the five-volume "Chronicles of Prydain" into one movie, the story comes across as a little too overplotted and frustratingly leaves questions one is likely to have about its characters (and magic rules) unanswered. The third reason is that aside from the aforementioned quartet of Taran, the Horned King, Gurgi, and Creeper, the characters aren't as well defined or memorable as they could be. In particular, Princess Eilonwy (whose bitchiness from the novels has been noticeably toned down for the film) comes across as an underdeveloped heroine--her abrupt shift from berating Taran's boasting about who got them out of trouble to a quasi-romantic love interest felt jarring to me. The same, frustratingly, feels true for many of the other characters, even if some of them (Fflewdurr Flamm, an elderly minstrel whose harpstrings happen to snap every time he lies) are actually quite likeable and/or interesting (a trio of batty witches who hold the titular object).

But even with its flaws, THE BLACK CAULDRON is by no means Disney's worst animated feature (that prestigious title belongs to HERCULES and probably HOME ON THE RANGE). True, it is problematic, but I nonetheless enjoyed the movie and applaud the animators for painting a grim, gothic fantasy setting through art. If only the plotting and characters were better developed, it would've been a classic. I would definitely recommend reading the books to get a full experience on the universe Disney was struggling to portray but by all means try out the movie as well. It has a lot of high points and there are some great animation effects (notably when an army of skeleton warriors comes alive), even though it probably isn't one of Disney's best.

A word of caution to parents: this is probably not a good film for children to watch. THE BLACK CAULDRON was clearly rated PG for a reason--not anything in the way of graphic violence or profanity, but there are lots of scenes which do come across as nightmarish, especially those involving the Horned King.

As far as the DVD release goes, it's a bit sparse on the extras, but the slide-show feature on its production origins and spin-offs warrants the purchase alone. The visual transfer is well done (aside from a few film scratches and one period of dirt filter) and it sure beats watching a pan-and-scan version. The real star of the DVD, though is the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix. THE BLACK CAULDRON was originally mixed for six-track Dolby Surround, and the music by Elmer Bernstein comes across as brilliant and the dialogue separation is impeccable.

So there you have it, my impressions of this flawed yet grossly undervalued entry to the Disney animation cannon. True, it's far from perfect, but as long as you don't compare it to the books (and acknowledge that it was created at a time when the studio was in something of a slump), THE BLACK CAULDRON is enjoyable and leaps and bounds above the weakest animated films ever made. ...
