Mario's got the moves with graduatedspeeds of running and walking, jumps, super jumps, bounce attacks, swimming, and more. The more youplay, the more moves you'll discover. This industry milestone game lets gamers play at their own pace, encouraging them to explore new nooksand crannies of its many levels with a Zen-like approach where the journey is as important as the goal.Other N64 games such as Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64 all owemuch of their inspiration to this gem of a game. A showcase for the system's graphics and processing speedcapabilities, Super Mario 64 is a must-have for any N64 owner. --Jeff Young Pros:

Mario Kart 64 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (01 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for theSuper NES (SNES). And while the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphicspower and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compellinghave been left out of this release. Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, andMario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casualgamers) entertained. Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of asputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150-cc engine, the game lets players racecomputerized opponents or up to four other players on a variety of well-designed tracks.Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collectingpower-ups and nonlethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels.Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically-placedbanana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shelllaunches their vehicle skyward, and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneckspeeds, if only for a moment. The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players--flip it onat a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. --Eric Twelker Pros:

Super Smash Bros Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review All of your favorite Nintendo characters have come together to answer the question: who is king of the Nintendo hill? The format can aptly be described as Super Mario Kart meets Mortal Kombat, which makes for an odd, yet addictive game. The object is to throw, punch, smash, or blast your opponents off the edge of the beautifully rendered, themed arenas. Numerous power-ups, weapons, and surprises help or hinder the melee. Your eventual goal is to fight your way through to a bizarre final boss character. Victory in this battle rewards you with another character to play, such as the scene-stealing Pokémon, Jigglypuff. From Star Fox's laser pistol to Link's hook shot, each character's trademark special abilities are utilized to knock one another off the screen. The game does a great job balancing the characters' widely differing powers so that no one character has an insurmountable advantage. The sound and animations are also dead-on: Donkey Kong is a huge, cartoonish ape, while Link is much more detailed and realistic. And Pikachu's famous thunder shock attack is accompanied by a fearsome yell of "PIKA!" Unlike most fighting games, Super Smash Bros. allows you to team up with a computer partner and take on other teams in both single and multiplayer modes. But the most fun is had when four human players play in a battle royale. The game quickly becomes a scene of incredibly fun chaos: picture Mario beating up on Luigi, while Donkey Kong is chased by a scampering, sledgehammer-wielding Pikachu. It's the perfect party game. --Hugh Arnold Pros:

Pokemon - Stadium Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (13 March, 2000) list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review As with just about anything brandishing the Pokémon name,Pokémon Stadium is a must-have for any Pokémaniac. But thistitle is especially geared towards owners of Pokémon Red,Pokémon Blue, or Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy.Using the same battle system as the Game Boy games--think highly advancedrock-paper-scissors--Pokémon Stadium allows players to entertheir Pokémon in a variety of tournaments and other battle modes, allfeaturing vibrant 3-D graphics and animation, as well as enhanced sounds andannouncer commentary. Using the included Transfer Pak, players can use their ownPokémon from Game Boy Game Paks, or they can choose from a pool ofrental Pokémon. Pokémon Stadium isn't all battles, though. The Kids Club modefeatures nine cutesy minigames that make for great multiplayer fun for all ages.Gallery mode lets players take snapshots of Pokémon (similar toPokémon Snap), which can then be printed out as stickers at yourlocal Pokémon Snap station. While Pokémon Stadium doesn't require that you already have anyGame Boy version of Pokémon, players won't be able to access twoof the best features of the game without one. Pokémon Lab allows playersto view, store, and better organize the data on their Game Paks, as well astrade Pokémon with another player (which requires an additional TransferPak, sold separately). GB Tower allows gamers to play their Game BoyPokémon cartridge on the Nintendo 64. --Joe Hon Pros:

Mario Party 2 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (25 January, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Every good game deserves a sequel, and the addictive, quirky Mario Party 2 certainlyfills the bill. This multiplayer party title combines the gameplay of a traditional dice-based board game withseveral brief action-game segments, including updated versions of 20 of the best offerings from the originalMario Party. There are also 44 entirely new mini-game challenges that pit players against eachother as they compete to collect the most stars. Owners of the original Mario Party will be comfortable with this game from the get-go. Eachplayer rolls a virtual die to advance through various board games, including pirate land, western land, spaceland, mystery land, and horror land. Several hidden adventure boards can be unlocked as players advancethrough the game. Each player aims to gain the most stars and become a superstar at the end of the game.Various mini-game challenges and booby traps await gamers as they land on some strategically placedspaces on the board. While Mario Party 2 can be played as a single-player game (against three computer opponents), thistitle really shines in social situations. This is the perfect game to pull out at parties--assuming you have afew extra controllers in the house. --Brett Atwood Pros:

Mario Party 3 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (10 May, 2001) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and all your favorite characters areback in Mario Party 3. This game features 70 minigames that makeyou use your N64 controller in ways you never thought imaginable. Likeits predecessors, up to four people can participate in five areas inboard-game-style play. As you traverse the board, you'll have yourchances to compete in the aforementioned minigames. Then it's all aboutbutton mashing and analog-stick twisting. The gamepad techniques areeasily explained, but some of them are tougher than they look. The single-player story mode is an absolute chore filled with as muchwatching as playing. You're not supposed to play this game alone, hencethe word "party" in the title. Multiplayer modes include party, battleroyal, and duel. The first two are the basic free-for-alls found inprevious games, while duel mode is an interesting addition thatcombines elements from Othello and Monopoly with the minigames. Thevarious modes help shorten multiplayer game time, which was a problemin previous versions. Mario Party 3 continues the series' tradition of being the topdog of party games. With its numerous easy-to-learn minigames, it'sperfect for when you and your friend are looking for quick, mindlessfun. --Raymond M. Padilla Pros:

Conker's Bad Fur Day Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (08 March, 2001) list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Conker's Bad Fur Day is for adults, the ESRB has rated thisgame Mature; it should not be bought for--or played by or around--children. That stated, the story of the game is the following: Conker's very good night turns into a very bad day. He has to deal with a crazy and abusive world, all while suffering through a massive hangover. Conker encounters abusive paint pots; jabbering dung beetles; trigger-happy, scar-faced Tediz; and a belligerent giant, with only a frying pan as a means of self-defense. He is resourceful, however, and makes the best of his situation. The game combines elements of 3-D exploration, combat, and puzzle solving. It features cinematic cutscenes, movie parodies, facial expressions, dozens of unhinged characters, and 1- to 4-player deathmatch games in a variety of styles. ... Read more Reviews (165)

Golden Eye 007 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (01 November, 1999) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognize the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so James must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up. Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. James can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns. The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive. The Rareware team spent time on the set with digital cameras, and it shows. One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents. With excellent gameplay, intelligence, and style, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter that'll keep you coming back for more. --Jeanne Uy Pros:

Banjo-Kazooie Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (10 January, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Banjo-Kazooie mimics the look and feel of Mario 64, a truly innovative and visually stunning game that belongs in any Nintendo 64 collection. But don't brush off this 3-Daction-adventure as an uninspired clone. On the contrary, Banjo-Kazooie introduces more than enough originality to warrant a spot next to its famous mentor. The game introduces two of the most charming virtual heroes in recent years--the goofy, floppy honey bear, Banjo, and his faithful, feathered sidekick Kazooie. In the game's introduction, we discover that the sinister witch Gruntilda not only nabbed Banjo's sister Tooty, but stole her beauty as well. Naturally, it's up to the bear-bird team to retrieve Tooty and rid the world of one darned inconsiderate witch. In this beautifully-rendered and massive game world, players run, jump, swim, climb, and flip over obstacles, defeat all sorts of "baddies," and find and collect numerous items and clues that help the quest to progress. Playing as both Banjo and Kazooie, players hone their characters' actions, learning nearly two dozen special moves that help players expertly defeat foes and successfully tread through the nine worlds. Banjo-Kazooie is one of those games that can demand hours upon hours of perseverance, patience, and learning of skills to complete. But don't let that discourage you. This epic game is so much fun that reaching the end will be an afterthought. --Eric Twelker Pros:

San Francisco Rush 2049 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (08 September, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (26)
Pros: 1. Sweet Graphics Cons: 1. needs memory card in order to save 1. Stunt mode and more! Stunt: In stunt mode, you get four tracks to do corkscrews, endoes, twists turns, flips-every trick in the world! The wing feature also allows you to glide through the air-and do major awsome stunts easier! Sweet! (available in 1player mode, also) Battle: In battle mode, you get 8 awsome futuristic arenas with sweet weapons: 1. CHAINGUN-Everyone's favorite, just shoot this automatic weapon and blow your opponent's head off! 2. RIFLE-This is your default weapon. It is bad, but you could give him some damage. 3. ROCKET LAUNCHER-Yeah. Shoots 20-50 rockets that could do quite some damage. Explosion sounds are awsome. 4. TORPEDO LAUNCHER-One of the best weapons. Only 3, but once fired, they follow the opponent-like, if he turns, it turns. One hit for this baby and your opponent is roadkill. 5. FASER-THINGY-I don't know what this thing is-either a plasma gun or a technical green bullet thingy or something else. It shoots green liquid-I don't know. Just play the game and you'll see. 6. MINE LAYER-Lays mines-one hit and kablamo! 7. BLAST SHOCKWAVE GUN-This thing, when you pick it up, goes on top of your car. When you fire it, it makes a shockwave (air too) that travels and knocks over or kills any car within a 20 foot radius. Pretty awsome. Cool. 8. NUCLEAR RAMMER-This weapon is hard to use-but could also be a shield and exterminates an opponent with one hit. It is like a mini-sattelite that fits in the front of your car. When you ram into someone with it, it blows them up. Also, if someone is in front of you and fires a torpedo or rocket or something, the rammer absorbs the stinking hit! (But only if in front or the direction pointed in) I think I covered all of the weapons and here are the powers you pick up in battle mode. WRENCH-Gives you maximum health; gives all your health back SHIELD-Shields you for about three to five minutes INVISIBILITY-Makes you invisible for two minutes That's the powerups. Now, what is good about single races is that you can customize the track-make it backwords, mirror it, increse wind, and increase amount of fog. This game is awsome-and you must buy it. I recomend it for everyone. IT'S AWSOME! BUY IT!

San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (13)
When San Francisco Rush came out in 1997, it was a little more crazy unlike anything I've ever raced. The graphics were just amazing, but unfortunately, the controls were just a little bit awkward, and hard to steer through the streets of San Francisco. The game anyway features six tracks to choose from, three not released in the arcades, and a extra special hidden track. Before it was a choice in Rush 2, it was featured here, Alcatraz. The amazing course did have some cuts, but it wasn't that extreme until nearly a year later. The game also features a couple of hidden cars to seek, while driving. There are hidden keys located on the street, unlocking 2 cars to choose from, once there accessed, a hidden taxi cab, and a devilish prowler. Although there were two different versions of Rush that came out during the time, one for Playstation, the other for Nintendo 64, they both seemed a little bit flawed, but enjoyable. Nevertheless, if you had a choice, I would suggest picking up Rush 2 Extreme Racing U.S.A. for Nintendo 64. But, unfortunately, for Playstation buffs, that was the last Rush there was. If you like this game, pick it up. If not, depending if you own a Nintendo 64, get another racing game. ... Read more Asin: B00002STHX |

Beetle Adventure Racing Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (02 February, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In an ironic twist, one of the coolest, most action-packed auto racing games in eons starsone of the world's most sluggish cars. But racers will never sense a lack of speed in BeetleAdventure Racing as they zip, jump, and fall around some of the most original and beautifultracks seen on the Nintendo 64. The uniqueness of this game lies in the beautiful graphics and rampant, humorous action (àla San Francisco Rush). On a Tiki-themed island track, for instance, racers are startled by aroaring T-Rex (clearly a nod to Jurassic Park), and risk a molten demise as the road passesalongside rivers of realistically rendered lava. With unusually long tracks, vertigo-inducing jumpsand falls, tons (and tons) of hidden areas and shortcuts, breakable obstacles, and well-placedpower-ups, this is a game that just keeps getting better with each play. Solo racers are pitted against seven other cars in a single race or championship mode, duel againstone other computer car, or race against the clock. Multiplayer variations include head-to-headracing for up to four racers, and a Beetle Battle that could easily be its own game cartridge. In thisMario Kart-style mode, racers are armed with mines, rockets, magnets, and shieldpower-ups that impede the progress of fellow racers attempting to collect a variety of ladybug icons. Those looking for a long-lived gaming experience can't go wrong with this one. --EricTwelker Pros:

Courses: Coventry Cove:A simple course for beginners, not very hard, and many interesting shortcuts Mount Mayhem:Significantly harder than Coventry Cove, this course takes you on a trip through a decked-out mountain, with many surprises and shortcuts and even a ski jump that you can take your car off of. Inferno Isle: Self Explanitory. It's a course taking place on an island that is competing with a volcano, and there is also a spot where you can dive into the volcano (not into the lava, of course, but into the volcano for that matter) Sunset Sands: Egyptian themed course, running through ruins.Unlike the other courses, this one has shortcuts that make a very significant difference in your position. Metro Madness:also Self-Explanitory.A drive through the city streets at top speed, and an interesting shortcut that literally lets you drive through a hotel. Wicked Woods: A "scary" drive through a Sleepy Hollow style setting.Rightfully, the hardest course in the game. Altogether, I think that this is a game for anyone into the Volkswagen Beetle, racing games, or multiplayer. It combines the best interests of all elements of the racing game. |
