Spyro The Dragon Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Spyro is a cute purple dragon in a bit of a pickle. Each of Spyro's dragon friends has fallen victim to the nefarious Gnasty Gnorc, who has turned them into crystals. Accompanied by Sparx the dragonfly, Spyro sets out to free his buddies, while collecting gems and dragon eggs. Sparx also serves as Spyro's health-o-meter, glowing gold when Spyro is healthy and turning dusky green as he tires. To boost his energy, Spryo can blast docile creatures with fire, turning them into butterflies, which Sparx transforms into much-needed fuel. This title has bright graphics in six well-developed worlds, each with several subworlds, including bogs, deserts, and ice worlds. Unlike some action games, in Spyro the Dragon the enemies are more fun than frightening. In the Peace Keepers world, for example, Spyro must burn down the monster soldiers' tent, sending one of the minions running out, quaking with fear or, if you're lucky, dropping his drawers and shooting a moon. Spyro's movements (fire breathing, gliding, jumping, and climbing) require entry-level gaming skills. For this reason, Spyro the Dragon is an excellent title for youngsters or less experienced players, who want to play without having to master complex movement combinations. --Kasty Thomas Pros:

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The feisty little adolescent dragon is back in a sequel that is far superior to theoriginal. Both Spyro fans and those who didn't play the first game will revel in theexploratory greatness that is Spyro: Ripto's Rage. Gone are the impossible tasks, unbeatable enemies, and fragmented game flow. This game sports superior controls, morecolorful and faster graphics, a tighter story, achievable goals, and plenty of gameplayvariety. Don't be fooled by Spyro's cuteness--this isn't a kid's-only game. With multiple goalsand side quests, a fantastic soundtrack by ex-Police band member Stewart Copeland, anda veneer of understated humor, Spyro: Ripto's Rage is highly addictive. Theplayfulness of the main character comes through in the exploration of the otherworldlylevels using the new moves, including super high jumps, rapid underwater swimming, and extended flight and hovering maneuvers. Determined explorers are always rewarded--sometimes with an ice hockey match or othersub-game, sometimes with riches enough to learn a new move or uncover a new area.Simply put, Spyro: Ripto's Rageis one of the best action/adventure games for thesystem. Despite the fact that this game is a sequel, it manages to bring a fresh new lookand feel to PlayStation gaming. --Jeff Young Pros:

Spider-Man Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 August, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Whether you're a fan from the '60s or not even remotely familiar withthe Spider-Man comic, you will get caught in his web. You'll see that despite its few flaws and the limitations of the PlayStation hardware, Spider-Man is the best based-on-a-superhero video game ever released. A crime has been committed and (as often happens) our hero has been framed. As the game progresses, you'll find that all is not as it seems and that many of Spidey's enemies, including Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, and Rhino, are all out to squash the Spider's quest to clear his name. Fortunately, Spider-friends, such as Daredevil, Human Torch, and Punisher, are here to help Spider-Man and keep the story moving. Like the comics, ol' webhead can climb most walls and ceilings, swing from rooftop to rooftop and, of course, do whatever a spider can. With his constant webslinging and acrobatic hand-to-hand fisticuffs, it's easy to feel that you are Spider-Man. The characters and scenery are nicely re-created here by making great use of the aging PlayStation's graphics. Spidey's ability to climb walls and ceilings does present problems with camera angles from time to time, occasionally making it tough to watch Spidey as he fights his way through some of the game's levels. While it can be frustrating, the overall camera work and graphics of Spider-Man are still amazing. Also, Spider-Man's controls can at times be less responsive and accurate than they should be, and the music is surprisingly subdued and flat, but most true believers can bear these problems until Spidey saves the day. In fact, the gameplay is so good, most seasoned gamers will devour the game in day or two, which makes Spider-Man a woefully short game. Cherish the time you have in these red and blue tights; this game is escapism at its best. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Ape Escape GH Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review What's more fun than a barrel of opposable-thumbed simians? How about the silly--butchallenging--Ape Escape? While not the first game to offer enhanced control with Sony'sdual-stick analog controller, Ape Escape is the first game to require either an analog or dual shock controller to play. That requirementensures that players will have full control of their hero, Spike. One stick moves Spike in any direction, while the other swings his monkey-catching devices. In Ape Escape, a circus monkey named Specter stumbles upon a scientist's prototypeintelligence-enhancing helmet, turning him into an evil monkey genius. As Spike, the professor's youngfriend, you must travel through time to clean up all of the monkeys Specter has sent back in his attempt torepopulate the world. If that's not enough to make you laugh, then chasing his goofy monkey minions asthey scurry from your clutches will certainly tickle your funny bone. You'll discover a variety of gadgets tohelp you in your quest, including monkey radar, a slingshot, and a propeller for flying. Spanning 25 hugelevels, Ape Escape is approachable for novices, and offers added challenges for veteran gamers. One such challenge is to lure a dinosaur near a rocky cliff, and then jar the monkey off his back and intoyour net. Note: no monkeys were harmed in the creation of this game. --Jeff Young Pros:

It starts out simple enough. You catch a few slow monkeys and learn your gadgets thru tutorials. But then it gets difficult. My 3 year old daughter loves to sit on the bed with spare control in hand and help catch monkeys. The graphics are nice and the storyline is fun.The gadgets are cool too. Only one complaint, and that is that the camera angle loves to change when you are at the most challenging parts.Anytime you need to use your flying thingy and it's for going somewhere difficult, the camera changes and you can't see where your destination is.It gets a bit annoying after you die a few times, but I did eventually get past the frustration and finished the game. This game is great for young kids and adults alike.

X-Men:Mutant Academy Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review As many veteran gamers will attest, movie-based video gamesusually don't come off all that well--usually because they're throwntogether in haste in an attempt to quickly cash in on a hot filmlicense. But X-Men: Mutant Academy is an exception, offeringplenty of characters, eye-popping graphics, and solid control as far asfighting games go. Computer-generated visuals bring 10 X-Men home in their latex comicbook costumes, as well as their leather movie duds. In addition tothose characters featured in the movie, Mutant Academy also putsBeast and Gambit at players' disposal. (Rogue, however, is a no-show.) The fighting system for Mutant Academy is built around threespecial move meters, which can be built up during battle. Once thespecial meter is filled, you can use your newly acquired moves toperform wild displays of combat skills. Uniquely, the power from onemeter can be transferred to another, giving players an added strategicadvantage while fighting. The game plays fast and takes skill tomaster, though it relies more heavily on special moves than combos.Still, it ranks right up there with Capcom's best. --Robb Guido Pros:

Final Fantasy VII Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon Pros:
