Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Average Customer Review: Video Game (08 November, 2002) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Set in the year 2008, Ghost Recon is a Tom Clancy-inspired war game that puts you in command of a Special Forces unit pitted against Russian ultranationalists trying to rebuild the former Soviet Union. Although the story arc is grand in scale (in keeping with Clancy's style), the game doesn't involve you in the war's major battles. You'll actually spend most of your time behind enemy lines--rescuing downed fighter pilots, knocking out enemy patrols, ambushing armor columns. You control a six-man squad, divided into two teams, and you have the opportunity to handpick your squad members (and their equipment) after each mission briefing. You can switch your point of view to any of the six active soldiers--the soldier you control automatically becomes the leader of his team, while the other team operates according to orders you give via a map interface. Thus, you can move one team into a covering position, leave them with orders to provide cover fire, and then lead the other team in to reach your objective. Or, break up your squad and try to achieve two objectives simultaneously. The level of detail and realism is incredible, right down to the way the soldiers communicate in hushed tones and with gestures. The complexity of the game requires an elaborate controller setup that takes a while to get used to (luckily there are plenty of training missions designed to help you learn the multitude of movement, weapons, and command functions). Once you get the hang of it, you'll find it's worth the time spent in boot camp. --Maile Bohlmann Pros:

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance Average Customer Review: Video Game (07 November, 2002) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is the PS2 espionage action game Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty with new playable characters, new VR missions, and a few twists. More than 350 new and moderately interesting VR missions fill in some of the gaps in the original game's story. There are also five separate "Snake Stories" that act as new missions. These take place apart from the main story, making them feel less like an expansion to the sprawling events in Sons of Liberty and more like an unconnected romp designed to pad the original game. Unfortunately, the "Snake Stories" lack the thrill, tension, and exposition that made Sons of Liberty so special. The "substance" is nothing more or less than a collection of disconnected additions to the core game Sons of Liberty, which remains unchanged from its original release: you play as Solid Snake in stealthy espionage/assault missions, infiltrating the lairs of bad guys to take down nuclear-powered bipedal creations called Metal Gears. Snake has all kinds of tricks up his sleeves: high tech weapons, the ability to sneak around undetected--he can even flip over the side of a railing to hide (a "Grip Meter" counts down, increasing the tension and making you pray the enemy walks away). Both a boon and a detriment to the game is its reliance on cinematic scenes to further the convoluted plot. They're well-rendered and professionally done, but you'll seemingly find yourself spending more time watching the game than playing it. Substance is worthwhile for anyone who doesn't already own Sons of Liberty. That goes double for Xbox and GameCube fans, because the game looks much better on those consoles than it did on PS2. For those who've already played the original, this reissue just doesn't add enough, pardon me, substance, to merit purchasing it again. --Bob Andrews Pros:

PLUS: The disarms are great, it can always get you out of a tough situation, also the dog attack is an automatic killer you also get their weapon. The bullet time is done nicely (nothing to add more than its bullet time). The different choice of arsenals are great. The AI are also very intelligent and has great AIM which makes this game a bit challenging at times. MINUS: Some graphics and cutscenes are just flat out horrible. Like the cars, and the cutscenes when they talk and their mouth doesnt move(Mind speaking?). Camera: you constantly have to find yourself switching to the default cameral because you are getting killed because you went around the corner... Stupid Submissions: some of the submissions are okay, like picking a lock and disarming the bomb, but the weight lifting and the punching bags and those type just test how long can your thumb last without getting tired or hurt. Storyline: very similiar to Max Payne. A framed cop going after corrupted people with alot of power in their hand who hires people to kill you, and you find a mysterious girl who helps you named Eve but never gets to completely to know her (reminds you of Mona Sax???) and how you look for revenge. Overall: Overall, i thought this game was great with some errors that could be ignored and overcame. It just takes alot of patience because some missions in this game just seem impossible until you find out your suppose to leave instead of keep fighting (OOOOOO!!!!) but the difficulty of the game is very high with very intelligent AI. Gameplay: 8.5

Dead or Alive 3 Average Customer Review: Video Game (13 November, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Any new gaming console needs to offer a quality fighting game at launch, and for the Xbox that title is Tecmo's Dead or Alive 3. ThoughDOA3 doesn't revolutionize the fighting genre, it does offer a greatgaming experience, and its graphics easily surpass every other fighting game onthe market--on any system. DOA3 offers eight modes of play, including story, team battle, tagbattle, and sparring. Sparring mode is customizable and is a nice way for newplayers to learn how to play the game, while story mode lets you take one of the16 available characters through a series of matches culminating in a fightagainst the über-powerful Omega. Once you defeat Omega, a short moviespecific to your character is unlocked. The story mode doesn't make a lot ofsense (and the dialogue is laughable) but the end movies are pretty cool, andit's fun playing through the game as each of the characters. The real meat of the game, though, is its combat, and DOA3 delivers inspades. Each character has specific attacks, such as Zack's Devil Elbow or BassArmstrong's Stun Gun Chop, and once you get the moves down, the entire affaircan unfold like a carefully choreographed ballet as combatants block blows, counterattack, and land devastating punch and kick combos. Adding to the game'sappeal are the massive and detailed multilevel arenas (introduced inDOA2), in which a precise kick or punch can send a combatant plummetingthrough the air down to the arena's next level. It's obvious that DOA3 was designed as a showcase for the Xbox'sgraphical prowess, and it shows--the game's graphics are awesome. The charactermodels look amazing and feature highly detailed clothing and accessories, andthe animations are extremely smooth. The environments are also outstanding, andfeature tons of little touches such as fluttering leaves, snow-covered groundthat can be torn up during the course of a fight, and great-looking water. Eventhe background structures are highly detailed. DOA3 doesn't rewrite the rules of the fighting genre, but its greatgraphics and intense fighting--especially in multiplayer mode--make for anenjoyable gaming experience. --William Harms Pros:

HALO Average Customer Review: Video Game (09 November, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review More often than not, when a game is in development for more than threeyears, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fifirst-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound. The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known asthe Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shapedplanet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to theplayer to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, thegame offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemyand allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will usethe terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to coverand aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump inand man the turret on the back of it. The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per secondrather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level designis among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging withoutbeing frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-insingle-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes. Much like the outstanding GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, Haloraises the bar for console first-person shooters. All console action games willbe measured against Halo for years to come. --Raymond M. Project Gotham Racing Average Customer Review: Video Game (17 November, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bizarre Creations, the developer of Metropolis Street Racer forDreamcast, makes its Xbox debut with a sequel of sorts. Project GothamRacing is very similar to its predecessor, except with refined gameplaymechanics and vastly improved graphics. The focus of this racer is unique, asit's centered on the "kudos" system. Players are rewarded bonus points forsustaining slides, riding on two wheels, catching air, clean driving, andpassing other drivers. Chaining any of these actions together results inhigh-scoring combinations. So in addition to trying to finish the race first, theplayer must worry about style and technique to succeed in this game. The kudossystem is fun and definitely makes this game stand out from the competition. Another highlight is the game's detailed graphics. The more than 200 circuitsbased on London, Tokyo, San Francisco, and New York are extremely authentic. Those familiar with the cities are sure to do a double take at the numerouscourses. The game's cars are also beautifully rendered and feature impressivereflection and lighting effects. Gameplay is quite diverse with quick race, arcade race, kudos challenge, timeattack, and multiplayer modes. Kudos challenge alone features nine differenttypes of gameplay that range among races, time trials, and obstacle courses. Theonly significant drawback with Project Gotham Racing is its difficulty. Most players will find that two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through, thegame becomes exceedingly difficult to the point where it's more frustrating thanfun. Despite this problem, it still provides dozens of hours of entertainmentfor most and a challenging time for hard-core gamers. All players will findProject Gotham Racing a truly distinct and beautiful racer. --RaymondM. Padilla Pros:

Well that's it i reccomend this game if u have 2 share ur system wit a brother. Because 2player mode is awesome. or just play by yourself.
First off the game went under major reconstructive surgery for this incarnation, pretty much throwing away the 2:00 clock. I have serious problems with that, it's what made THPS, trying to do the goals within the time frame. Also out is the tape system, and again I'm seriously upset, just like I was for the arrival of THPS2. The gameplay is THPS without a question. Its a little dulled down from the sharpness of THPS3, but gives a little more realism to the game, but if I wanted that, I'd go out and pick up the deck and go skating. Many of the challenges are excrutiatingly tedious. Actually about 90% of them are tedious, I like the races, and the traditional collect SKATE of find 5 whatevers in 2 minutes, but then the competitions don't have the skate park feel to them. The levels are big, but fairly unimaginative (Chicago from Mat Hoffman 2....I won't say more) If you're looking for a THPS game, I would go 3 and maybe even 2x before 4, but if you're looking for new levels and don't have 4, pick it up now that it is at a platnium price, and be glad you didn't spend twice as much on it. ...
