Majora's Mask is a strange game: while it is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, it is clearly a Zelda game of a very different shade.

It begins with Link slowly trudging deep in the Lost Woods, with his trusty horse, Epona, when he is attacked by a masked and mischevious Skull Kid - who steals his precious Ocarina and Epona. Worse still, the Skull Kid turns Link into a Deku form of himself, and Link finds himself in a strange Mirror - like Hyrule. Things turn even worse when Link finds the moon slowly getting bigger over the course of 3 days...

Majora's Mask features the very same Gameplay as Ocarina of Time, with a few exceptions. The entire course of the game is set within 3 days or 72 hours - and hours seem to pass like minutes, giving a player a total of just over an hour. While this may seem off-putting, it is implemented very well - people have set schedules over the course of the game, meaning you will be pottering around the Clock Town while not in dungeons, with the promise of an upgrade - or even a new mask.

Masks, as the title suggests, play an important role - some make you run faster, talk to enemies, summen foes or sooth arguements and more. There are a total of 24 masks to collect, the reward being a mask containing "The Merits of all masks". The best of the masks are the ones that allow transformation. (Let's face it, who HASN'T dreamed of swimming as a Zora or rolling as a Goron) The Zora Mask, the Goron Mask and the Deku mask. they allow you to transforminto all your favourites from Ocarina, each with the gifts of the species - Super fast swimming, Incredible strength, and, er, spitting nuts.

Majora's Mask is harder, darker and more original than Ocarina of Time - the unique aspects of the game are implemented very well but the way the game is played may be off-putting for some. Brilliant and totally original.

P.S. the start bits kinda boring.

If only that damn site IGN didn't take my idea first. They described this game as the Empire Strikes Back in Zelda and it's true. It's more darker, more gloomy and at times it can even be depressing. Unlike Ocarina of Time which oozed coolness and wonderment or Wind Waker which was cheery and uplifting due to its look, Majora's Mask is quite different than other installments but in no way is it bad, it's just different.

Story: I always considered this game more like an epilogue to Ocarina of Time rather than a full sequel. At the start of the game directly taking place after Ocarina, Link is in a forest and gets ambushed by Skull Kid and is turned into a Deku(they look like tiny trees with a long mouth) and enters a portal. From here Link finds himself in Termina, a land that is gonna be destroyed by a falling moon in 3 days. So it's up to Link once again to save the day using the powers of time and this weird masks.

Graphics: Reviewing this game in 2005 with such games as Metroid Prime, Halo and Metal Gear Solid 3 of course puts Majora to shame but remembering the graphics at that time, it's more of an extension of Ocarina only darker and not as vibrant. Due to maybe the Expansion Pak or just the game itself, the game does have framerate issues and some rough textures. Beware that the Gamecube re-release on the Collector's Edition sometimes freezes the game.

Gameplay: All Zelda games pretty much to this day revolved around some kind of "gimmick": in Ocarina it was time travelling, Wind Waker was controlling the wind, Minish Cap was the ability to shrink to thumbnail size and the Oracle series revolved around time travelling and season changing. Majora's Mask revolves around, yep you guessed it, masks. Link with the benefit of 24 masks(25 if you get all 24), Link can turn into different characters such as the Deku race, Goron race(big tough creatures with a taste for rocks) and the Zora race(fish people roughly). Or there's different masks like Postman, Ghost, or Bunny mask which makes him run faster.

The other aspect for the 3rd time in Zelda's history revolves around time travelling, once in Ocarina and the other in Oracle of Ages. Only this time it's different. You see the game's clock makes 3 days take about roughly 50 minutes before the moon crashes so with the Ocarina you can go back to Day 1 and start over, even make the time go slower so you have more time. This is quite annoying to say the least since your funds, arrows and bombs revert to zero if you go back to Day 1, your items are intact, your extra stuff isn't. And also you could be in the middle of a dungeon to be really close only to be on the final day and have to reset to Day 1, which incidentally cancels any progress you made in the dungeon.

Not to say the game is bad(it's just slightly hard) but it's quite enjoyable to go through, if you don't mind it's tone anyway.

I played the Legend of zelda ocarina of time in 1997,WHAT A YEAR THAT WAS!!!I had so much fun!then in gameinformer magazine the new preveiws page said that there was going to be a new game called 'the legend of zelda:majora's mask'it was about link going to a new land where the moon is falling and he has only 3 days to live and on the third day link has to play the song of time so that he can go back to the first day,I HAD TO HAVE IT!but then half a year later when it came out,I was very upset because when I played it,it was too easy and I beat it in almost a week!when I played'Ocarina of time'it took me almost two YEARS!but other then that it was a fun game,Very fun in fact.I really liked that you can upgrade your sword,when in 'ocarina of time'the master sword is what you see what you get!PROS TO MAJORAS MASK:There are lots of masks that you can get and they give powers(like fast running),you can upgrade your sword twice,there are new songs for link to play on his ocarina and there is a bank so link can have alot of money!CONS:you have to play 'the song of time'way to often because the moon is falling for some reason and you have only 3 days to live,finding more then half of the masks are very hard to find,the game has only four temples and they are all very hard way too short.but all in all this game is worth around $15.00,so if you like the other Zelda games try this one too! ... The futuristic Perfect Dark casts players as Joanna Dark, asecret agent who becomes embroiled in a sinister conspiracy involvingaliens and an evil corporation. I have a rather large collection of N64 games, and still play them.This is one of those games that, even with the breadth of first person shooters available today, still stands out on it's own.Improving on the Golden Eye engine, you're given plenty of imaginative weapons to work with, from the Farsight gun that shoots through walls, to machine gun that allows you to cloak yourself, there's plenty of toys to go around.

The one player campaign is filled with replay value, especially with co-op and "counter-agent" options, allowing another player to either play a mission with or against you.Same format from Golden Eye exists here: easy, medium and hard difficulty levels with rewards for completing each.

The multiplayer does suffer a bit in terms of graphics, but the fact that you have so many options, from adding simulants, to changing the format of the game (team mode, death match, capture the flag, etc.), to customizing your level weapons, makes up for this.

Wisely, Rare placed some unlockable features from the Goldeneye games, including guns and multiplayer levels.Other secrets include hidden levels, cheats, etc.

In short, this has to be high on the "must" list for anyone who still plays N64 games.

For the sake of parents buying this for children, I will note there is some occasional cussing (guards sometimes yell "what the h***" when they see you), but this can be turned off on the options screen.Animated blood can also be turned off.By and large this is incredibly tame compared to what passes for "M" rated now, but it should be noted.

Unlike his many 2-D platform-style shooting games of yore, Mega Man'sfirst N64 game looks similar to the 3-D style of the newer Zelda games.In fact, this basically is a port of Mega Man Legends for the PSX.

The arcade blasting has been sprinkled with a little RPG drama. Deep in thegame, there are huge areas to explore, items to discover, and people with whomto engage in somewhat childlike conversation. There's also a ton of handy-dandyweapons and moves to use against the game's bigger bosses.

Sadly, the graphics are way too PlayStation-like. The borderline-primitive leveland character designs are extremely bland, and display little attempt to makeuse of the N64's graphics power. Also, there's an occasional problem withoperating the camera to track enemies.

Mega Man 64's somewhat interesting, if goofy, story line mitigates thegame's lackluster look, but it won't satisfy gamers who are looking for deepplots or engaging characters. No, it's not the same Mega Man that many gamersknow and love; but, for video game newbies and casual game fans, that's not sucha bad thing. --Mark Brooks

This game sucks. I really enjoyed the original Mega Man but this game has nothing incomin with the original. First of all the controls are terrible. U cant just turn u have to stop then turn. After awhile this gets very annoying. Second the graphics for this game are very poor. U would think that since Mega Man was gooing 3-D the graphics would be better, well your wrong. the graphics just plain suck. Last the game is really only a little fun for the first 5 minutes u play but after that its very boring. Overall this game is very bad and is not worth buying or even renting. TOTAL DISAPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!

In recent years, Capcom attempted to bring their classic Mega Man franchise into the new millennium. They gave the series a complete makeover, in a number of ways, and thus, the Legends series was born. How does this, the first game in the Legends series, measure up? Read on and see.

PROS:
-IT'S A FULL 3D GAME. Many fans of the Mega Man series had long been awaiting such a game, and at long last they have one. Well, sort of.
-THERE ARE TONS OF WEAPONS AND ITEMS FOR YOU TO FIND AND USE. The island where the game takes place is filled with ruins which it will take a good deal of time to explore in their entirety.
-THE STORYLINE IS BETTER THAN SOME PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE. This is NOT really a Mega Man game, but the storyline the game has is an interesting one nonetheless.

CONS:
-THE BIGGEST CON IS THE MOST OBVIOUS ONE - IT ISN'T REALLY A MEGA MAN GAME! Capcom just used a Mega Man look for many of the characters so that they could sell more games. For shame, Capcom.
-THE GRAPHICS ARE HORRIBLE, EVEN FOR A FULL 3D GAME ORIGINALLY MADE FOR THE PLAYSTATION ONE. The characters look like they were made out of paper, and I don't mean that in a good way. The 2D Mega Man games on all other systems had graphics way better than these.
-THE CONTROLS SUCK. If you want to turn, you have to rotate the camera. This becomes extremely annoying in no time at all. There are also several other control faults.
-THE GAME LEAVES TOO MANY QUESTIONS UNANSWERED. If the series really IS somehow connected to the other Mega Man game series, the game fails to tell you how. Likewise, your character's origin is never explained.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good game, but it wasn't really what I was hoping for. That's not to say you won't have any fun with it - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you find this game in the budget bin, pick it up. It may surprise you.

Don't get me wrong I usually love when a 2d game goes 3d but capcom made a mistake with this one. I love when mario and sonic went into 3d and I was really excited when i saw mega man had gone 3d so i bought it. I'm still hoping they will come out with another 3d mega man butnot like this one. I like rpgs but mega should have never come one it is completely dull. So save your money and don't buy even if you are a diehard mega man fan like me. I thought this game was going to be fun. I gave it 2 stars because the graphics where ok but it is hard to know where you are going. This game is confusing. Maybe it is for 12 year olds because my little sister could play it better than me. MARIO RULES!

This game has been tied with Super Smash Bros. Melee as my favorite video game EVER.I loved the graphics, even if they were a bit on the rudimentary side, but they weren't the worst graphics in the world.(Super Smash Bros. for N64 carries that title.) Here are the pros and cons:

PROS:
The voice acting is funny.
The music is great (even the DK rap, and I HATE rap, but this one grew on me).
Three new Kongs: Tiny, Lanky, and Chunky!
The bosses are fairly easy (except for Boss number 3.
I HATE HIM SO MUCH!!!!)
One of the new items is a "Crystal Coconut", which possibly pays homage to the TV show (which I think is GREAT).
It's fun just to explore the levels even after you've beaten them.

CONS:
You have to beat Donkey Kong Arcade twice in order to progress (and it gets harder the second time.ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!)
The third boss is SO VERY HARD.It took me several months to defeat the guy, but fortunately I could get progress in the game anyway.Yippee!

This game is most definitely worth the cost, but you might want to find it at GameStop or someplace like that.I got it for seven bucks and it worked like it was new! ^_^

4-0 out of 5 stars This is...one helluva game!
What can I say? This game is HUGE, but it's fun. I was initially adamant at trying it out because I had been disappointed with Banjo-Kazooie the year before, but as soon as I got into it, I was hooked. This game is not for the weak of heart. It is about twice the size of Banjo-Kazooie. There are twice as many Golden Bananas as B-K had Jiggies. There are more than 3 times the amount of bananas (for Banana Medals) than B-K had Musical Notes. When you play a level in Donkey Kong 64 and then go back and try a level in Banjo-Kazooie, it feels terribly restricted. Yet the gameplay is still essentially the same. You move around the levels (you control five characters this time) and perform a variety of tasks, after which you are awarded a Golden Banana for your efforts. And then you lather, rinse, and repeat. Boss battles play an even larger part of a role than in B-K, where the only boss battle seemed to have been at the end of the game. Everybody have the same general moves, but they all must earn them independently from Cranky, Candy, or Funky with their specific coins.

And then there are the tedious aspects that everybody remembers in Donkey Kong 64. With five playable characters, Rare seemed to want them to work as a team, but sometimes that may be a bit of a bother. No, it is actually more of a big bother. Let's suppose there is a switch that Donkey must open. We can assume that the things behind that door are for Donkey Kong, but nope. Rare just made a Donkey out of us. It's for Diddy and Tiny! And then there are times when you are walking along collecting green bananas for Chunky but all of a sudden, the bananas change to blue! So then your only choice is to find a Switch Barrel and change to Lanky. It gets a bit tedious. And then there are the backtracking. You have to unlock certain characters in the beginning, and they are not all in the first level. So you must then go back and get their respective Golden Bananas in previous levels. Meh. All of this constant switching really takes away the fun out of the game, especially if you're playing it through for the fourth time. It's still worth it to play through the entire game at least once, although certain frustrating moments would make it acceptable to avoid the 101%.

But Donkey Kong 64 is still an amazing game. Even if you hate the repetition, you can't overlook the technological wonders Rare has instilled. The game had been one of the most stunning five years ago, as Rare was already setting themselves up as one of the experts in graphical achievements. Although each Kong look rather bland now, the game's visuals are certainly pleasing on the eyes. However, the same can't be said about the game's camera. The camera can often go crazy at times, especially during swimming moments or on Diddy's Jet Barrels. Those are times when I go on a cursing frenzy. There are other equally frustrating times. I suppose the camera had always been the death of 3D platform/adventure games. The game's music is terrific. Although people have a love/hate relationship with the infamous D.K. Rap, the rest of the game's soundtrack are lovely. Songs like the Main Menu music and Frantic Factory are catchy, while Fungi Forest can actually send a chill down your spine. And then there's the humor. Actually, some of the game's humor seems to be kind of forced, but then again, the same can be said about the humor in Banjo-Kazooie. Other parts are genuinely funny. However, as spectacular as the game is, the game's tedium and spotty camera keeps it from becoming a classic. It's too bad. Nintendo had such high hopes for this game. ... Read more

I got this game two weeks after it came out. At first i was nostalgiac of the first game, i liked the first game more. But after I got over that, i noticed how fun this game was compared to the first game. Each level was harder and more complex than the first. And even though there are only 8 levels, compared to the 10 in the first, it took me longer to beat this one. The graphics, i have to admit, were very impressive for a sixty-four bit console. The game itself was very hard and challenging, but in a good way. This was the right way to make a sequal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feels different from Banjo-Kazooie
Even though this is the direct sequel to the Rare 1998 classic Banjo-Kazooie, and features much of the same gameplay and similar characters, I think that it just feels like a different game. It seems almost as different from Banjo-Kazooie as Donkey Kong 64 or Conker's Bad Fur Day does. The game just emanates a completely different atmosphere. I guess it's a combination of very different music, different moves, and new characters. Kudos to Rareware on that. People usually like a game that play the same as another game but feels different. I mean, it's a different game, isn't it? Who likes a game that plays AND feels the same?

Ah well. Banjo and Kazooie's final N64 adventure takes them to the world beyond the valley in which they live in. It's a large world, larger than the cavern that Gruntilda calls her lair. The levels really aren't that much larger than the mammoth world featured in Banjo-Kazooie or even Donkey Kong 64, but it's amazing how Rare has fresh ideas even after creating over a dozen massive levels for the two aforementioned games. Ah well. The difficulty level of Banjo-Tooie seems to be tougher. It's sometimes harder to figure out what the heck to do for certain Jiggies, and there are so much more stuff to find this time around. Not only are there jiggies, but there are also: Jinjos, Cheato pages, honeycombs, and everybody's favorite notes! The massive amount of extra moves can also get overwhelming. Boss fights, which were MIA in Banjo-Kazooie are now here, and in every stage. The extra modes of play are a nice change to the typical Banjo-Kazooie formula. I haven't had a chance to play as Kazooie without Banjo, but I did get to control Mumbo. It wasn't really as I had expected, but fun nonetheless. The 1st-person shooter mode was obviously a chance to cash in on the successes of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, but they were actually well done. The 1st-person shooter level in Mayahem Temple freaked me out, but hey. It's all about atmosphere.

Rare has always been good at having distinct "tastes" to their games. I suppose what helps them are their awesome musical staff. Although the music in Blast Corps got on the nerves of some people, it definitely added to the feel for it. The somewhat-like-variations of the Bond theme in GoldenEye gave that game a unique feel. So on and so forth. Banjo-Tooie had good music that adds to its different mood, but it just didn't feel as excellent as Rare's fantastic score for Banjo-Kazooie. Maybe that's a good thing. Having the Gobi's Desert tune stuck in your head for hours is not exactly a pleasant experience. As far as sound effects go, Banjo's deep utterance for every jump is JUST NOT RIGHT! Argh! I can't stand it. Oh well. It's a good game nonetheless.

They started out in Banjo-Kazooie as "not well-known and REALLY strange main charaters", but in Banjo-Tooie, that bear and bird duo really caught on as enjoyable and fun guys to have in a video-game.
Banjo, the "slightly out of it" honey bear and Kazooie, the cheeky breegull started out in their previous game having Grunty, the evil witch, as their enemy because she wants to steal Tooty, Banjo's sister, in order to get her beauty. But in Banjo-Tooie, she doesn't really want to steal anyone's beauty, she is MAD and WANTS revenge!!! Chasing through Grunty's lair learning "novice moves" from Bottles, the mole, was simply a "kindergarden" learning experience compared to the "high school" more "advanced moves" from Bottles' brother JamJars.
In Banjo-Kazooie, the good shaman Mumbo-Jumbo, assisted the bear and bird by turning them into an alligator, a pumpkin, etc., ect. But now, Humba-Wumba steps in to take his place. Mumbo still helps you in B.T., only this time, YOU control him! Navigate Mumbo around looking for things to do and your also able to almost "evaporate" enemys with your Mumbo-staff!
Earlier in this review I mentioned Bottles' brother JamJars. Drill-Sargent JamJars teaches the Banjo-Kazooie team different moves and abilities to help you defeat bosses, harmful lava, quick-sand, toxic waste, and anything else that might kill you. You also learn how to use special pads that let Banjo and Kazooie split up!
With it's great grafix, great charater cast, long game-play time and plot [it took me about two or three days worth of gameplay to win], improved plot worlds and sub-worlds, better theme music [not that B.K.'s music was bad], I rate it "THE BEST GAME EVER MADE FOR THE N64 AND BEST GAME OF ALL [the second best game is and was B.K.]." I give Banjo-Tooie 5 GOLD STARS!!! :D Great job, Rare* and Nintendo*
