Final Fantasy VII Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience. The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon Pros:

Metal Gear Solid Greatest Hits Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (05 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic. Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offeringtips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart Pros:

Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (22)
The 1998 release consisted of all the Major League Teams at the time of the lineup. Still, the game included some brilliant graphics and a style to call their own. The graphics might seem a little flawed with their facial expressions, but the frame rate is fantastic. The game also includes a few added bits and pieces to the mane, including a home run derby, season play, World Series play, or exhibition. The game also includes vocal commentary from Ken Griffey Jr. himself, and a little bit of rapture in the mix. In exhibition mode, you can play not just against any team, but also with any stadium other than the home stadium, which makes it a little bit interesting. The game also includes a couple of special codes, including getting a home run automatically, every time Ken Griffey Jr. steps up to the plate, and even a code that gains access to special teams, including Angel Studios, the company production team that made this game. It is just a shame that most other sports games for Nintendo 64 seemed like they were flawed from the start, but with Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. it is within a class all by itself. Although many people don't sell this game or Nintendo 64 anymore, it is nice that you can get this any way that you can. Still, I prefer this over any other baseball game released for the Nintendo 64. ... Read more Asin: B00002STHH |

Jet Grind Radio Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (10 November, 2000) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In Jet Grind Radio, you play a whacked out kid who's completelytorqued off about the system. It seems that the city of Tokyoto is not terriblykid-friendly and wants to keep things neat and pretty. You, the skater punk, figure that the only way to rebel is with your inline skates and a couple ofcans of Krylon. That kind of attitude can lead to trouble when you're in thereal world; but, in the world of Jet Grind Radio, there are no paintfumes, and it's all done in the name of fun and scoring points. Jet Grind Radio's gameplay has some of the feel of Crazy Taxi. Asyou skate, you see little floating arrows that indicate where you should go (andwhere you should be tagging). Also, like in Crazy Taxi, the pace of thegame is absolutely nonstop. There is moving traffic in the street, and nearlyeverything can be jumped, hopped, or ground. Underscoring all of this action isa DJ at the local hip-hop station, who spins cool tunes while you tear up LittleTokyoto. The game starts out with a training course that's designed to bring you up tospeed. Pay good attention to this section; it teaches you the basics, and you'retested on one of the lessons right away. Learning how to hop over obstacleswhile keeping a rail grind going is particularly helpful. After graduating into the real game, you have the option of going it cool oreasing up and figuring out how to do the flips, splits, and other midair anticsthat make this game so much fun. Once your skating skills are set, you'll learnthe spray-can side of things. You pick up cans of paint as you maneuver around(keep your eyes open--some cans are placed in those hard-to-reach places, sothat you'll have to catch serious air to get them). After securing your fill, use the left trigger and the analog to spray as you pass by areas that have beenindicated by the arrows. The game's tunes are right on schedule. Much of the Japanese soundtrack has beenretained, with new tunes rounding out the selection. The new playlist additionsgive the game that special flavor that U.S. audiences crave: Jurassic 5, MixMaster Mike, and Rob Zombie, to name a few. Much about Jet Grind Radio has "classic" stamped on it; but, of course, liking it or not liking it will be up to the individual. With its freshcharacters, cool design, great music and audio, and high replayability, JetGrind Radio is likely to lodge itself into the library of many a Dreamcastowner. --Todd Mowatt Pros:

Banjo-Kazooie Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (10 January, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Banjo-Kazooie mimics the look and feel of Mario 64, a truly innovative and visually stunning game that belongs in any Nintendo 64 collection. But don't brush off this 3-Daction-adventure as an uninspired clone. On the contrary, Banjo-Kazooie introduces more than enough originality to warrant a spot next to its famous mentor. The game introduces two of the most charming virtual heroes in recent years--the goofy, floppy honey bear, Banjo, and his faithful, feathered sidekick Kazooie. In the game's introduction, we discover that the sinister witch Gruntilda not only nabbed Banjo's sister Tooty, but stole her beauty as well. Naturally, it's up to the bear-bird team to retrieve Tooty and rid the world of one darned inconsiderate witch. In this beautifully-rendered and massive game world, players run, jump, swim, climb, and flip over obstacles, defeat all sorts of "baddies," and find and collect numerous items and clues that help the quest to progress. Playing as both Banjo and Kazooie, players hone their characters' actions, learning nearly two dozen special moves that help players expertly defeat foes and successfully tread through the nine worlds. Banjo-Kazooie is one of those games that can demand hours upon hours of perseverance, patience, and learning of skills to complete. But don't let that discourage you. This epic game is so much fun that reaching the end will be an afterthought. --Eric Twelker Pros:

Chrono Cross Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classicChrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy namedSerge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and onein which he drowned 10 years earlier. Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphicsand a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increaseyour power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physicalattacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attackssetting up fierce blows. The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interestingcharacters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds toadvance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear tolook similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closerexamination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in oneworld thrives in the other. My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexitiesof the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with earlybattles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic.--Robb Guido Pros:

WWE: No Mercy Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (16 November, 2000) list price: $59.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review WWF No Mercy picks up exactly where Wrestlemania 2000 leftoff--it uses the same wrestling engine as its predecessor, only with morewrestlers, more match types, and other additions that will make hard-corewrestling fans devilishly happy. For starters, there are 65-plus wrestlers, including old- and new-schoolers,tossed onto carefully copied sets like Wrestlemania and SmackDown. There arealso new backstage areas, like the sharply detailed bar, which incorporates apool table for optimal slammage. New matches, such as the ladder match and guest-referee match, offer numerouspossibilities, like using the ladder as a springboard, or ignoring pins whentaking control of the official. Weapons also abound, and now these items can behurled around, even from the floor to the ring, where they're likely to hit aclueless opponent. A story mode adds tremendous replay value to this one, givingplayers the option of turning good or bad, with a variety of consequences thatare based on that decision. As stated, the game plays just like Wrestlemania 2000--meaning the samedegree of slowdown and questionable artificial intelligence. The slowdownparticularly hampers the game when many wrestlers take the ring at once; itseems that this title pushes the Nintendo 64 to the limit, as far as on-screenaction goes. But the game's good points more than outweigh its bad, and, all told, NoMercy will satisfy wrestling fans who are looking for a taste of theirfavorite male melodrama. --Robb Guido Pros:

Fear Effect Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 February, 2000) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Despite its unforgiving difficulty, Fear Effect is an innovativecinematic adventure that serious gamers won't want to miss. Set in a dark, futuristic world, Fear Effect has players switching back and forthbetween its three anime-style protagonists. With a story that's filledwith plot twists and heaps of what the Entertainment Software Rating Board findsoffensive, this is far from kiddie fare. Easily one of the most visually striking PlayStation titles, Fear Effectshines with Japanese-animation-inspired 3-D character graphics andfull-motion-video environments that allow for nearly seamless transitions between storysequences and gameplay. With the exception of restoring saves and changing CDs,there's virtually no game interruption. Unfortunately, it's very easy to die in Fear Effect, which not onlywrecks the game's pacing, but can be really quite maddening. Many portions ofthe game are more frustrating than challenging, requiring players to die andreload their last saved game over and over until they get things just right. And while Fear Effect's less-than-perfect controls admittedly do takesome getting used to, its real-time inventory system is just plain awkwardduring combat sequences. It's doubtful that professional mercenaries like theones you're playing would be fumbling about while changing or reloading weaponsin the heat of battle. Despite its flaws, Fear Effect does manage to keep you hooked, and is oneof those games you just have to see through to its end. --Joe Hon Pros:

Soul Calibur Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (09 September, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Featuring graphics that surpass even the amazing NFL 2K, Soul Calibur is the martial arts fighting game to end all fighting games and the game to get if you're a Dreamcast owner. Based on the arcade classic of the same name, Soul Calibur lets you choose to represent one of 10 fighters in a series of battles against your peers. If you can successfully defeat all of your opponents, you will then face the fiendish Inferno in a final showdown that will determine the fate of the world. Rush 2 Extreme Racing USA Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (24 September, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA is the follow-up to the populararcade-turned-platform-game San Francisco Rush, offering the signaturerambunctious gameplay of the original with several welcomed new features. No longerlimited to zipping through the streets of San Francisco, drivers plow through expresstours of Seattle, New York (uptown and midtown), Los Angeles, Las Vegas, andHonolulu, among other tracks. An addictive new feature is a stunt track, where playersrack up points by performing spectacular jumps, in-air spins, flips, and loops. Ever seenskaters frolicking about at a skateboard park? Think bigger park with frolicking one-tonvehicles. Not the prettiest sight, but so much fun. Obviously, this is a far cry from the traditional auto racing game. Rush 2 is anall-out, full-throttle action racer, with cars careening through shortcuts, performinggravity-defying leaps, and, occasionally, actually racing down the main track. One coolfeature (and slight annoyance): collecting keys and cans of a trademarkedhyper-caffeinated soft drink--carefully placed on the track by cunning marketingexecutives--opens new areas, offers new vehicles, and provides cheats. --EricTwelker Pros:

The 1998 video game was made exclusively for the Nintendo 64, and not upon any other console. Ironically, the prequel, San Fransisco Rush, was made on both the N64, and the Playstation. The game features many exciting and enduring automobiles through the streets of some of the biggest cities in America, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. The game also includes the infamous Alcatraz prison, a hidden course from the previous Rush. Many fans were shocked to know why the game wasn't on any of the other consoles at the time. The sales for the Playstation version of Rush were just awful, and Midway chose to put this only on Nintendo 64. While many people stopped purchasing Nintendo 64 games, Rush 2 remains as an absolute delight for any racer in the world. If you're looking for a reved up time, Rush 2 is that game for you.

Resident Evil:Code Name Veronica Average Customer Review: CD-ROM -- our price: $29.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The first Dreamcast installment in the Resident Evil series, Code:Veronica is "survival horror" at its finest. Unmatched in its ability toconvey a persistent feeling of dread--and scare the pants off of you ever sooften--this is one of those hard-to-put-down games that will keep you up forseveral nights on end. The fourth chapter in the dark Resident Evil epic, Code: Veronica delvesfurther into the machinations of the sinister Umbrella Corporation, once againpitting players against zombies and other horrifying mutations created byUmbrella's biotechnological viruses. Players begin the game as Claire Redfield,Resident Evil 2's college-girl-turned-zombie-killer, and later controlChris Redfield, the beefcake cop from the original game. There's more strategyrequired here than in the previous games, as Claire's actions have a directimpact on Chris. For example, playing a trigger-happy Claire that uses everyhealth-restoring item in sight will call for some fancy footwork on the part ofbrother Chris. While the basic game design here is largely unchanged from that of itsPlayStation predecessors, Code: Veronica features many visualrefinements--including exquisitely detailed 3-D character graphics, roamingcamera viewpoints, and spectacular atmospheric and lighting effects--thatgreatly enhance the cinematic feel of the game. Equally high production valuesare evident in the game's excellent use of ambient and dynamic sound effects. Upon completing Code: Veronica, players are rewarded with "Battle Game,"a timed slaughterfest that can be played in third- or first-person point-of-viewand has rewards all its own. --Joe Hon Pros:

Golden Eye 007 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (01 November, 1999) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognize the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so James must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up. Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. James can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns. The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive. The Rareware team spent time on the set with digital cameras, and it shows. One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents. With excellent gameplay, intelligence, and style, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter that'll keep you coming back for more. --Jeanne Uy Pros:
