Editorial Review

Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the FinalFantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and seriesdebut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limitedsound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-qualitymusic. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, andimmense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite anengrossing experience.

The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named CloudStrife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to takedown an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs inthe balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires aconsiderable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure thatevery PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's nowone of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is cool!
I don't have this game but it is so cool(Just so you know,I'm 12 years old and will be 13 next January).I will play this game someday.I watched my older brother play Final Fantasy VII.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as top notch as the other FF's!
To sum things up, FF VII is a good game, but I find it is overrated. When it was released in the late 1990's it set the standard for graphics not only for RPG's, but for all video games from there on out.But in terms of the game itself, it leaves some things to be desired.

The characters for example, were not as well developed as they should have been. The lead character, Cloud, got about 80% of the character development, while the others only small bits are known about them. But I will say that each character does have his or her own unique personality so this area may not bother players too much.

The music in FF VII unfortunately, was horrible in my opinion.Especially when compared to other Square titles such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and even Final Fantasy IV (which is well over 10 years old). The battle music was good, but the rest was flat and uncreative, especially the music on the world map. Those of us who are familliar with the work of Square had expected much better in this department.

The game play was good. The materia system was a nice touch that added variety to the basic magic-using RPG.Basically, every character in the game can use spells, but they have to equip a materia onto their armor or weapon, and gain points through battles to learn each spell the materia has to offer. The only downside is that once the materia has been unequiped, the spell(s) go with it.But nonetheless, the materia system had breathed new life into the RPG world of magic-using.

You also have side quests, secret/hidden items and weapons, and secret characters just like most RPG's.The graphics are good, although the characters look very polygonized in their smaller forms. The CG scenes are beautiful. This is one area Square always dominates. They did a great job with those in FF VII.

It saddens me to give this game only 3 out of 5, but I must be honest.I love RPG's, especially the classics from Square, but I just don't think that FF VII deserves to be up there with CT, FF IV, and FF VI.Even the ending of FF VII was disappointing, because they did no follow-up on the characters. It's a good game overall, but it had the potential to be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars :)

Editorial Review

You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic.

Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offeringtips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart

4-0 out of 5 stars This hasn't aged particularly well, but.....
After eight years without a new Metal Gear game, this franchise got it's third entry with Metal Gear Solid. The graphics have not aged well at all. Textures are very pixellated, animation is very jerky, and the framerate can get rather slow at times. The audio, however, has lots of great dialogue, combined with a catchy musical score.

The gameplay is based around stealth. You are Solid Snake, a spy working for a secret agency whose objective is to stop a device called Metal Gear, and save a couple of old guys. The story is deeper than that, of course, but in a nutshell, that's it. The controls, while laid out well, can be very unresponsive at times. The game itself is very fun (sneaking around to either get past or silently eliminate enemies), but is very easy to complete, and take away all of the cinematics and dialogue (12 hours of it all!), and you've got just three hours of gameplay.

Metal Gear Solid hasn't aged well at all, but is still very fun and happens to be a nice collector's piece for fans of the series. But should you start here? No, grab a GameCube and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (a next-gen remake of this) instead, then grab Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance on the PS2 or the Xbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, possibly the best action game ever created...
Metal gear solid has the most complex and often perplexing storyline I have ever seen in a video game, hands down. It will always have you on your toes, literally. I have seen many movies, and I can honestly say this game has a better storyline than most movies. Here is what you need to know..

Graphics- 100/100 The graphics were top of the line when this game first came out, and even to this day they look great. There is so much detail to every aspect of the game, and even compared to most newer games, this game wins out. Back when I first played it in about early 2000 or so, the graphics were the best the playstation had to offer, and that's a year or so after this game came out, which is pretty astonishing. There is even a scene where Snake is in the girls bathroom, and there is a mirror which perfectly reflects everything. I mean, back when this game came out that was a pretty big feat both graphically and attention wise. Most games just don't pay the kind of attention this game does.

Sound- 100/100 Perfect. Just flawless. There isn't much of an actual soundtrack, but the music is incredibly atmospheric and will make you feel like you are Solid Snake, infiltrating a nuclear base. The voice-overs are the best I have ever seen in a video game. Solid Snakes voice over is perfect, and just about everyone elses fits their personality and there image. Otacon's fits him perfectly, so do Meryl's and Liquid Snake's.
Seriously though, this game has incredible sound and has never been surpassed by any action game to date.

Gameplay- 100/100 I have heard people complain about the poor camera views limiting the gameplay, but in my opinion, the camera views perfectly fit this game and the game wouldn't be the same without them. Sure, it would have been nice to have a first person perspective while using the weapons, but it's all the same to me. I think it is perfectly fine having to shoot enemies in a third person view, and it works better with the type of graphics that it has. When you are spotted, enemies will storm in from all directions to stop you, something that seperates this game from all others. This game gives you good reason to want to play it safe, but still allows you you have some action packed fun as well, if you want to take a chance that is. Also, this game has an incredible storyline but doesn't throw it in your face all the time. MGS2 drags the storyline on eccesively and bores you with excruciatingly long cut scenes and codec conversations. I remember using the square button to skip most of the cut scenes in MGS2. The problem with MG2 is that the storyline is too complex for the good of the game. I mean, much of it is pointless grubble and the game bores you by making you listen to conversations about crap that doesn't apply necessarily to the main storyline, making it a waste of time. This game, however, truly has a wonderful , complex storyline that you will WANT to watch and listen to. Every conversation and cut scene adds to the game flawlessly, so you will probably never get bored, although I am sure you will find yourself reading the codec conversations manually instead of listening to the people talk, since they tend to talk rather slowly and take up a bit too much gameplay.

Overall- 100/100 This game is as perfect as it gets, and I have beaten it at least 15 times, if not more. Even to this day it is a pleasure to play, and I don't think it will get old any time soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Solid
Well this is one game that I love playing and I always will. This game has it all, everything you would expect in a movie. Im talking about true military action which features, VR training, special weapons, and ofcourse the hero and the villains.

You are Solid Snake, and your mission is to find and eliminate the nuclear war head 'Meatl Gear Rex'. But beware, expect challenges through out your mission, be preared for antthing. Only you have been chosen to attempt this mission and you know you can do it. Prepare yourself for stealth action like you have never seen it before, and experience the life of a genetically born soldier. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Open Mind
Hey guys.I love this game, flat out.It has great characters, a good plot, a good system, and fantastic music.A lot of people think that the game is boring, or maybe they don't like the plot, but I think that those people need to just give it a chance. This was the 7th Final Fantasy I have beaten, and now I have finished 1-9, and this game is in my top four.

There are some problems with this game, but I don't think they are very critical. Most of them affect the first couple hours, but they are nothing toreally have too big a problem with.First of all, the begining is slow. There are about 4 battles in the first hour, and you finish only about 20-50 in the first few hours. Also it takes a little getting used to to get into the gameplay.Characters gain magic and abilities based on what equipment they have on.

Anyways, I put this in my top list of games, which are in order of which is most important to play

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Earthbound
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Cross
Xenogears

Play those RPG's and you will have experienced the best games ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is to the people
Look, I realize you are entitled to your opinions, as am I.So, let me get my two cents in.This is to the people who do not like FF( because only mages can use magic(like cure, fire, etc.).Stop complaining! Not only can Garnet and Eiko cure, but Amarant uses Chakra to cure, Freya uses a skill to cure, and so can Quina. This game DOES return to the roots which has only certain characters use magic. It makes it harder. Now, to those who claim this game is childish because of certain things.I am twenty-four years old, and I like this game a lot.My friends like this game.Even my twenty-eight year old brother likes this game.None of us think it is too childish.
To those who complain about the storyline, claiming a thirteen year old could do better.I've read the fan fictions people of such age write about the Final Fantasies; trust me, they ARE NOT BETTER.If you think you could do better, try it.By the RPG Maker, and DO IT!Betcha can't, though. If thirteen year olds COULD do better plots, you would think that such companies as Square Enix would hire them.Duh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game, despite all other opinions
First of all, I'd like to point out that I haven't played many other Final Fantasy Games, so I'm not going to compare them.

On to my thoughts about FFIX. It was the first real RPG Playstation game that I ever bought and it's the one that got made me love the genre.
Plot: 4/5 Great plot, however they fail to really explain some crucial details (for example: why does Zidane sees Garnet's memory?). A little more explanations would be nice for my lack of brain cells.
Characters: 5/5 You really do get attached to Zidane and Garnet, you laugh at Amarant's oblivious and cynical nature, and just want to shoot Thorn and Zorn. The point is, the characters are interesting and have a personality.
Gameplay: 4/5 At first it's hard to understand how to train the characters and use different accessories to learn attacks. However, once that is settled, the gameplay is great. Also, it took me forever to realize that pressing Select on the world screen brings up a map: VERY USEFUL! You'll get lost if you don't use it. Other than that, good gameplay.
Graphics: 6/5 :) Gotta love the grahics. Squaresoft created different cultures/architectures for each different country. Gaia is absolutely gorgeous. The FMVs are amazing. Two thumbs way way up for the graphics.

Overall: Though it required a lot of time training to beat Kuja and the final bosses, the game is really fun. The minigames range from "fun-for-two-seconds" (Jumprope Vivi) and "takes-forever-but-gotta-love-it" (Chocobo Hot and Cold) and the game itself is great, long and never boring. Five stars out of five it is, then. Great way to get yourself in the world of Final Fantasy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MLB Game Ever!
This is by far the greatest MLB game ever! I own the Game Cube and have played and even own a baseball game for it (All Star Baseball 2000), but this one is far superior to the rest. If you are an avid baseball fan or are just looking for a game to pick up and play, GET THIS GAME!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Little Leaguers
With some higher resolution games popping up, I thought this one might be swallowed up and lost. However, that was not true. As most kids will tell you, usually indirectly, it is the game PLAYING ability that they like. This one retains that. Even for adults. The playing is realistic and allows a good amount of variability. The background noise of the crowd is low fidelity, yet it sounds very real (which it should). The announcer is clear and realistic. Generally, pleasantly surprised that it plays so well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grand Slam
When Nintendo released their Nintendo 64, they took such a very long time to finally develop a baseball video game. Other systems at the time had great games that invovlve the Great American Event, but not Nintendo 64. When they finally unveiled Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. it took on a life of its own. Nearly a year into suspension and development in the video game industry, it became anything but oversaturated. In fact, it was worth the wait in fun.

The 1998 release consisted of all the Major League Teams at the time of the lineup. Still, the game included some brilliant graphics and a style to call their own. The graphics might seem a little flawed with their facial expressions, but the frame rate is fantastic. The game also includes a few added bits and pieces to the mane, including a home run derby, season play, World Series play, or exhibition. The game also includes vocal commentary from Ken Griffey Jr. himself, and a little bit of rapture in the mix. In exhibition mode, you can play not just against any team, but also with any stadium other than the home stadium, which makes it a little bit interesting. The game also includes a couple of special codes, including getting a home run automatically, every time Ken Griffey Jr. steps up to the plate, and even a code that gains access to special teams, including Angel Studios, the company production team that made this game.

It is just a shame that most other sports games for Nintendo 64 seemed like they were flawed from the start, but with Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. it is within a class all by itself. Although many people don't sell this game or Nintendo 64 anymore, it is nice that you can get this any way that you can. Still, I prefer this over any other baseball game released for the Nintendo 64. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game ever
This is hands down my favorite game ever made... Sure it's kinda old by now and therefore not as fancy technology-wise, but the story is enough to keep me involved, and the fact that there are 108 distinct characters to recruit, PLUS all the NPCs that you don't recruit.Lots of personality.I can't even tell you how many times I've played through this... the second one is pretty good, too, but the first is definitely the best.A must-have for any true RPG fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome game for any RPG fan.
I rented this game along time ago with a few friends, but usually when I look at the title image I can tell what kind of game it would be, but after starting it, it was awsome and started me into being a hugh Suikoden fan. The 2-D graphics may be a turn down for most players out there, but the story line is awsome and there are alot of interesting characters to recruit. I highly recommend this game if you've played 2 or 3, or just need a good game to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic
The Konami we all know is back. Remember all the good quality games we used to get from this company? Well, Konami is trying to get back into shape, and Suikoden, the year's best RPG, is a step in the right direction. The story is simple. You are the son of the General Teo, one of the emperor's most powerful generals. Immediately, your father leaves to fight a battle up north leaving a few of his trusted friends to watch over of you. Soon after, you come to realize that you and your father been serving on the wrong side. The Emperor and his generals' minds have been brainwashed. The result is unhappy subjects and an enslaved country. Knowing this you join the Liberation Army and when their heroic leader is assassinated by the baddies, you are chosen as leader. Your job now is to recruit thousands of men to join the Liberation Army and restore peace to the country.
Suikoden is full of beautiful backgrounds (especially your castle which you can name), not to mention outstanding effects for magic spells. The music is incredible, rivaling the soundtrack of Square's Final Fantasy 3! Some of the sound effects used in spells are reminiscent of those taken off old He-Man episodes, which oddly enough sounds terrific. All this plus intricate plot twists and an inspiring storyline constantly push this game forward. Suikoden is undeniably one of the best RPGs ever made. Not only that, but Suikoden isn't a game that can be finished in a few days either. Suikoden is long (about 25+ hours) and it doesn't get boring... ever. ... Read more

Jet Grind Radio
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
CD-ROM (10 November, 2000)
list price: $49.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

In Jet Grind Radio, you play a whacked out kid who's completelytorqued off about the system. It seems that the city of Tokyoto is not terriblykid-friendly and wants to keep things neat and pretty. You, the skater punk, figure that the only way to rebel is with your inline skates and a couple ofcans of Krylon. That kind of attitude can lead to trouble when you're in thereal world; but, in the world of Jet Grind Radio, there are no paintfumes, and it's all done in the name of fun and scoring points.

Jet Grind Radio's gameplay has some of the feel of Crazy Taxi. Asyou skate, you see little floating arrows that indicate where you should go (andwhere you should be tagging). Also, like in Crazy Taxi, the pace of thegame is absolutely nonstop. There is moving traffic in the street, and nearlyeverything can be jumped, hopped, or ground. Underscoring all of this action isa DJ at the local hip-hop station, who spins cool tunes while you tear up LittleTokyoto.

The game starts out with a training course that's designed to bring you up tospeed. Pay good attention to this section; it teaches you the basics, and you'retested on one of the lessons right away. Learning how to hop over obstacleswhile keeping a rail grind going is particularly helpful.

After graduating into the real game, you have the option of going it cool oreasing up and figuring out how to do the flips, splits, and other midair anticsthat make this game so much fun. Once your skating skills are set, you'll learnthe spray-can side of things. You pick up cans of paint as you maneuver around(keep your eyes open--some cans are placed in those hard-to-reach places, sothat you'll have to catch serious air to get them). After securing your fill, use the left trigger and the analog to spray as you pass by areas that have beenindicated by the arrows.

The game's tunes are right on schedule. Much of the Japanese soundtrack has beenretained, with new tunes rounding out the selection. The new playlist additionsgive the game that special flavor that U.S. audiences crave: Jurassic 5, MixMaster Mike, and Rob Zombie, to name a few.

Much about Jet Grind Radio has "classic" stamped on it; but, of course, liking it or not liking it will be up to the individual. With its freshcharacters, cool design, great music and audio, and high replayability, JetGrind Radio is likely to lodge itself into the library of many a Dreamcastowner. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Nonstop pace
  • Cool design of both characters and backgrounds
  • Great soundtrack
Cons:
  • Some might be turned off by the rebellious theme and graffiti gameplay

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Dreamcast game ever!
Jet Grind Radio is not your average skating game and that's what I love about this game. It's hip, it's new and fresh something that's has never bin done before.Jet Grind is not only a terrific Dreamcast game but it simply one of the best Dreamcast games next to Shenmue and Soul Calibur. The game is an instant classic that no one with a Dreamcast should miss out on.The game is extreamly original and a very underrated gem, heck this is better then the Tony Hawk series. It has a pretty cool story. You're are the GG's a skate gang that pretty much takes over other groups of skaters turfs and to make matters worse you are being chased by a ruthless cop and his minions(AKA swat teams)and Tanks, Helicopters and so on.This game unlike the sequal JET SET RADIO FUTURE is more challenging because it has a timer. The games level desighn just keep getting better and better and the best part about this game is.....THE MUSIC.This game has the best music next to Metal Gear Solid. The music will really get you into this game which if really awesome. The game is also pretty original cause you can spray grafiti on walls, trash cans, windows ect.And no game has ever pulled this off but this game is Cell shaded and is very well done.Every character and level is so well desighned that your mouth will be drooling in such amazment.Put simply...the visuals in this game are amazing.I'm going to make this short and sweet.

PROS
-This game has extreamly addicitve gameplay
-The cell shading in this game is absolutley amazing~
-Very Original and ten times better then the rest of those Skating games..

-The Characters compared to the enviroment look nothing alike which gives the game some flavor..

-BEST MUSIC EVER!This game has some really awesome tracks inculding Rob Zombies "Dragula"

Cons...
-.............Nothing

Overall Jet Grind Radio lives up to my opinion as the best game for the Dreamcast and is highly original very addictive. It has sweet cell shaded visuals which even put games like Zelda Wind Waker to shame. The game is a bit of challenge with the Timer and everthing..Overall Jet Grind Radio screams Originality and awesome....

Final Verdict..This game truly deserves its

5 out of 5 stars

And I'm sticking to it......Jet Grind Radio is....AMAZING..

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Adventure
Jet Grind Radio is an awesome fast paced game, with only one real disadvantage. This disadvantage is that some people may hit a point where they are just not skilled enough to do what has to be done, or it becomes difficult to figure out what has to be done in order to finish that level, and then you have to repeat the level over and over until you can get it right, but this can get annoying when you have some crazy law enforcement people/things chasing you while you are trying to do something challenging. One way that I have found to minimize this problem is, after failing a mission 3 or 4 times, stop for the day, and come back the next day and try again. This way you don't get too angry, and just stop playing.
Overall the game is definently worth it's cost, and, along with maybe 2 or 3 other solid games, makes it worthwhile to get a dreamcast, even though the system is so old, and many of it's games are on other systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A DC legend.
Man, when I got this back in 2001, I was addicted to this game. I had never played anything like Jet Grind Radio, and I still haven't. You're part of a rollerblade gang in Tokyo-to: the GGs. You skate around tagging over rival gangs' graffiti while evading the authority run by Captain Onishima. This guy is freakin' insane. Just to get rid of one kid, he sends riot police, attack dogs, helicopters, and more. But later on, it gets worse: some assassins called The Golden Rhinos are after you too. Along the way you build up your gang after being challenged by other kids. If this sounds a little weird, that's because it is, but it's still a good game. The skating system isn't complex at all, and not combo-focused like the Tony Hawk games. When you jump during a grind, the character does a trick automatically. If you're looking for a game that has more combos to do, go for the sequel: Jet Set Radio Future. It lets you do chains of tricks if you have the right height.

The tag edit feature was a nice addition, but it's pretty limited on what you do. Small and Medium tags can only fit 1-4 letters, while the Large ones only fit a few more. But I guess the real point of this was for when you could go online with the DC: saving pictures from sites and importing them over to JGR so you could tag with that picture. Yeah, I bet a lot of kids had porn tags. Personally, I'd rather have ones of the JFK assassination. Another extra is the radio feature where you can listen to all the background music heard in the game.

The graphics, for their time, were great. So much was going on at once on-screen that sometimes you'll stop just to admire the scenery. Colors are done beautifully, as are the character designs. We need more characters like the ones here. Each one has their own unique style. From the straight-up hip hop looks of Tab, to the techno-driven Noise Tanks, to the neo-punk looks of the Love Shockers (who look so much better here than in JSRF). There's just one problem though, after playing JSRF, I have trouble playing this. Everything's so slow compared to the newer sequel [obviously] to the point where it gets annoying. JGR runs at 30 frames a second, and there's a lot of slowdown when in crowded parts of town. I highly reccomend you play this before JSRF if you have the chance, otherwise you'll be disappointed probably.

And the music is downright gnarly. This was the first game soundtrack I ever got (read my review of that for the whole deal). It has a great mix of techno, a few raps, rock, metal, and a terrible salsa track. Hideki Naganuma should be proud for coming up with most of this stuff. As for the voices, I don't get why people go on about how JGR has "some of the best voice actors in a game". The only one who really talks is DJ Professor K...and Combo talks for a little bit. But other than that, everyone has the default "OW!" and a few lines like "Sweet!", "Cool!" and "Yeah!" when they do tricks. Not that the game is very vocal-driven, it's just something worth mentioning so you don't think all people do in it is talk.

If you're a Sega fan and know that they put out innovative games, then this is something you'll want. If it's the usual action game you're into, look somewhere else. Jet Grind Radio is an instant classic that didn't get the attention it deserved (probably thanks to that weird-ass commercial). At the very least you should get this to hear the cool music. ... Banjo-Kazooie
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Cartridge (10 January, 2000)

Editorial Review

Banjo-Kazooie mimics the look and feel of Mario 64, a truly innovative and visually stunning game that belongs in any Nintendo 64 collection. But don't brush off this 3-Daction-adventure as an uninspired clone. On the contrary, Banjo-Kazooie introduces more than enough originality to warrant a spot next to its famous mentor.

The game introduces two of the most charming virtual heroes in recent years--the goofy, floppy honey bear, Banjo, and his faithful, feathered sidekick Kazooie. In the game's introduction, we discover that the sinister witch Gruntilda not only nabbed Banjo's sister Tooty, but stole her beauty as well. Naturally, it's up to the bear-bird team to retrieve Tooty and rid the world of one darned inconsiderate witch.

In this beautifully-rendered and massive game world, players run, jump, swim, climb, and flip over obstacles, defeat all sorts of "baddies," and find and collect numerous items and clues that help the quest to progress. Playing as both Banjo and Kazooie, players hone their characters' actions, learning nearly two dozen special moves that help players expertly defeat foes and successfully tread through the nine worlds.

Banjo-Kazooie is one of those games that can demand hours upon hours of perseverance, patience, and learning of skills to complete. But don't let that discourage you. This epic game is so much fun that reaching the end will be an afterthought. --Eric Twelker

Pros:

  • Nicely-paced game world filled with well-designed challenges
  • Excellent character control with numerous special moves
  • Gorgeous graphics
Cons:
  • Numerous--often complex--special moves may discourage some casual gamers

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing like it! Winter of 98 with my gal. Donkey Kong!
I have never played anything like this since. Everything from SlyRacoon, to Ratchet and Clank, owe it to this.

Wicked witch Gruntilda takes Banjo's sister to hey layer, miles away in a realistic 3D cartoon world.

Banjo is a bear with Kazooie a bird in his backpack that can help him jump and fly and basically you learn to do lots of things with it. You solve puzzles via action and collect tolkens across lovely maps. Mumbo Jumbo transforms Banjo into some other creatures along the way. You can fly. It was amazing. A full adventure all the way to end. We played it for months and I have NEVER played anything like it again. The makers of Donkey Kong released it at the best time. It is now up to the future generations to make adventure concepts better than this one. This is one of the best N64 games ever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tight controls, but suffers from a severe case of vapid cute
I strongly disliked this game at first. The cutesy characters, mind-numbing storyline, and abundance of throwaway dialogue was a little too much, and it otherwise seemed to be an awkward Mario 64 clone.

Well, time has passed and I've given it another shot; played it more than halfway through, actually.I've changed my mind...initially, it's appeal was completely elusive.I get it now.The play mechanics are incredibly solid, Banjo is a joy to control, and some of the challenges are quite satisfying to complete.

It's got a lot going for it, so it's a shame that the positive elements are trapped in such a...I've got to say it...stupid game.

Harsh, I know, but really - the characters, worlds, dialogue and "plot" are dreadfully thin.I know, a platform game is about jumping, running, and figuring out little puzzles, but aesthetics count for something too. It's got to be wrapped up in an interesting package, and if you're over the age of 8, Banjo simply isn't.A rhyming witch?A bird that constantly tosses out insults like "crustacean butt"?There is absolutely no creativity outside of the programming - design and storyline seems very rushed, as well as stolen from a mish-mash of Disney movies.

So while there are satisfying elements to it, Banjo-Kazooie can feel severely empty for anybody but the very young.A shame, because it's not impossible to make a simple platformer that everybody can wholly enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite game of all time.
Just buy this to say you own it. It may be a Mario rip-off, but it seems to excel past Mario. Yes it is hard enough for old gamers and nice enough for young gamers. The music is happy and bouncy. In a nice way for anyone.
The past is that your sister is kidnapped by a witch who plans on stealing her beauty. You are to team up with a bird and perform many combos to survive.
You must collect puzzle pieces and musical notes to progress in the game. This game is harder than anything. Which will have your kid brother giving you the controller and you an excuse to play.
Control is ok. But I will have to overlook it concerning how systems were back then. Special moves are quite worth the wait in the game and you wonder what is going to happen next.
The ONLY problem is that Banjo seems to be there just for looks. You will use Kazooie everywhere. To swim faster, walk faster, attack, EVERYTHING!
This game is by far the best I've played and wish they will release a new one again (Other than the sequel I've played and own.). Hell, they can release the same two games again for other platforms! ... Read more

Chrono Cross

Editorial Review

Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classicChrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy namedSerge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and onein which he drowned 10 years earlier.

Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphicsand a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increaseyour power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physicalattacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attackssetting up fierce blows.

The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interestingcharacters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds toadvance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear tolook similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closerexamination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in oneworld thrives in the other.

My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexitiesof the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with earlybattles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic.--Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Lavish, vibrantly colored graphics
  • Unique battle system involving elements and casting awayrole-playing clichés like experience and magic points
Cons:
  • Easy battles due to powerful offensive and cure elements
  • For hours, players will be saying, "Get to the time travel stuff"

3-0 out of 5 stars Chrono Cross -- On its own
When I purchased this game, I had no idea that it was a sequel, and had never played the first game, Chrono Trigger. I really can't say how well Chrono Cross stands up as a sequel, but as a game on its own, it gets 3 stars from me.

Good things about Chrono Cross are the graphics (very nice, including the movie sections), the character designs (there are dozens of characters, and each one's look has been well thought out), and the music (even the world map music is good).

The gameplay is mostly fun, though the battles drag on and on when you start the game and don't have high-leveled characters. Once you get the hang of the battle system and have some good spells and characters to use, they become far less repetitive.

There are definately some bad things about Chrono Cross as well. Having never played Chrono Trigger, the plot made absolutely no sense whatsoever to me. This made it even more difficult to figure out what I was trying to do. At times, I had to wander aimlessly because the game wasn't clear what I was trying to accomplish at that point. Another low point of the game is the number of characters (40+). I got the feeling that the point of the game was not to try to save the world, but to see how many characters you can collect. Which brings me to my last gripe. You're expected to beat the game more than once (preferably at least 3 times all the way through). There are other events that you can trigger to happen and other plots which can unfold by choosing other paths, but honestly, I didn't feel the game was worth wasting another forty hours to beat just to get all 40 characters and seeing a different ending, especially when the original ending was so weak.

Overall, if you've never played Chrono Trigger, expect to be lost a lot. It does have its moments, but for the number of hours required to beat it, you're better off looking for something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chrono Cross Versus Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross is a game that you'll either love or hate.Your opinion is based largely on whether you view the game as the sequel to Chrono Trigger, which is a somewhat controversial issue as the game description states that it is while a game producer, during an interview, said that it's not.

One aspect of the game many find repulsive is that there are 40+ characters, resulting in shallow storylines and 9 or 10 lines on average per character throughout the game. The flip side is that you get to experiment and combine very different characters to form a team that you want.If you enjoyed the intimate friendly party in CT, you'll find that lost in CC.

In terms of storyline, CC does a good job of creating a story that is complex but makes sense at the same time. However, as mentioned above, if you're hoping for a continuation from Chrono Trigger, you'll once again be disappointed as none of the characters from CT are playable in CC.In fact, at least one character from CT meets a tragic end, which throws out the happy ending in CT.In terms of continuation, the plot does follow CT well minus the fact that Schala from CT looks completely different in CC (No wonder Magus couldn't find her!)

Anyway, Chrono Cross is a great game if you view it alone and avoid comparing it with the classic Chrono Trigger. The storylines take on a more complicated poetic tone and the characters system is largely different. These, however, still work in this new game.I would highly recommend Chrono Cross to those who have not overly idolized Chrono Trigger and were hoping for a Chrono Trigger clone on Playstation.

Happy gaming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Its no Chrono Trigger...but still an amazing, beautiful game
I finally played this game recently, quite a few years after it's release. At first I had serious doubts about it, as there seemed little connection to Chrono Trigger (which I am a big fan of), and the gameplay and story just didn't seem to be nearly as good. However, once I gave it a chance I really started getting into it.
I think one of the big downfalls of this game is that it is a sequel to such a phenomenal old SNES game, and everyone wanted it to be as good or better, which would have been a hard thing to achieve. In it's own right, this is an amazing game, regardless of it being a sequel or not.
It is a true sequel, and the story does tie in directly to the events in Chrono Trigger, however, that's about it...the story. If you want to see the characters or environments of Chrono Trigger, you're out of luck, as this game has all different characters and takes place in the El Nido archipelago, in the same world as Chrono Trigger but never explored in that game.
The other thing this game has in relation to Chrono Trigger is just the over all feel of the game...you can tell the same people made it.
The graphics of the game are incredibly beautiful, and though already quite dated, they still stand up well (they are comparable to say...Final Fantasy IX). The environments range from beautiful tropical regions to complex castles and dungeons, and all areas are very well thought out, fun to explore, and interesting. I'm glad they kept the overland map the same as in Chrono Trigger, making it fast and easy to get around. The music is wonderful as well, and while I would have liked to have heard a few more Chrono Trigger classics, I really can't complain...the music is beautiful and very well done.
The story is twisting and complex, and it's actually quite hard to keep straight what's going on sometimes and what world you are in, as the game takes place in two different dimensions of the same world as opposed to different time periods. The two different dimensions are very similar and it can be hard to keep straight what world you are in. Still, the story was very good, keeps you involved, and does end up having a lot of direct and very interesting tie-ins to Chrono Trigger. There is also a plethora of characters (near 40, I think), almost all of which have there own mini-stories.
That was one aspect of the game I have mixed feelings about. On one hand it's great and interesting to have so many unique characters to be able to use, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. But on the other hand, having so many characters makes it hard to really get into them, their stories end up being rather shallow, and you can never really power all of them up. You'll likely end up with a couple favorites of every color attribute that you use most often, which really isn't bad. Overall, they did a good job with the characters, and I like the system they used.
The gameplay is very fun, and although it is in most ways straight forward RPG, they do throw in some interesting twists to combat. Overall quite enjoyable.
There is an almost infinite amount of secret tidbits to unlock, so much that it would almost be impossible to find them all without the strategy guide. The direction of the game can change depending on choices you make, and conversations are always different depending on who is in your party. The game is incredibly open ended, and has multiple endings as well. This coupled with the fact that it has a new game + feature gives it incredible replay value. I just beat it the first time and I'm already replaying it again with all of my equipment, elements, and experience from the first play through to try and get a different ending.
Overall, I give this game five stars. It has excellent story, dialogue, graphics, sound, characters, and gameplay...every thing about it is great and it is a world you'll want to get lost in again and again. Alas, it is no Chrono Trigger, and a large part of me wishes they could have tied in some of the characters and places from that game a little more, but oh well. They did a different game in the same style as Chrono Trigger, and it's great fun. There are at least some fun little nostalgic elements, like at one point when you find an enertron and you can hop into it to fully revive your party, and when you get out you find "you're still hungry", along with the stomach growling straight from Chrono Trigger. Very fun stuff. Highly recommended to fans of Chrono Trigger, or just anyone who loves a good RPG with lots of replay value. ... Read more

WWE: No Mercy
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Cartridge (16 November, 2000)
list price: $59.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

WWF No Mercy picks up exactly where Wrestlemania 2000 leftoff--it uses the same wrestling engine as its predecessor, only with morewrestlers, more match types, and other additions that will make hard-corewrestling fans devilishly happy.

For starters, there are 65-plus wrestlers, including old- and new-schoolers,tossed onto carefully copied sets like Wrestlemania and SmackDown. There arealso new backstage areas, like the sharply detailed bar, which incorporates apool table for optimal slammage.

New matches, such as the ladder match and guest-referee match, offer numerouspossibilities, like using the ladder as a springboard, or ignoring pins whentaking control of the official. Weapons also abound, and now these items can behurled around, even from the floor to the ring, where they're likely to hit aclueless opponent. A story mode adds tremendous replay value to this one, givingplayers the option of turning good or bad, with a variety of consequences thatare based on that decision.

As stated, the game plays just like Wrestlemania 2000--meaning the samedegree of slowdown and questionable artificial intelligence. The slowdownparticularly hampers the game when many wrestlers take the ring at once; itseems that this title pushes the Nintendo 64 to the limit, as far as on-screenaction goes.

But the game's good points more than outweigh its bad, and, all told, NoMercy will satisfy wrestling fans who are looking for a taste of theirfavorite male melodrama. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Overwhelming number of wrestlers, complete with special moves
  • Excellent novelty matches, and plenty of weapons for clobbering opponents
Cons:
  • Big-time slowdown when the action starts to heat up in the ring

5-0 out of 5 stars great game but lacks certain qualities
this game is very well done probably the only problem is when you do a tag team or fatal four way match, the game moves slowly and takes time to get back to normal. the story is a great feature to this game, fighting backstage, starting rivalrys is very cool. also the fireball or poison mist moves really leave different marks to your opponent's face. I strongly reccommend this game to anyone who likes wrestling games.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Wrestling Game On The 64
I've always loved wrestling games and they just keep getting better and better. I've been into them since the SNES days. And when the 64 came out, WWF War Zone became my favourite, then Attitude, but then THQ started bringing out there WCW titles. I hated the WCW, so I never played them for quite a long time. I never had a go at their first release they brought out, but I somehow ended up with a copy of WCW VS NWO Revenge, at first I was focused to find every flaw I could and put it down and never look at it again, but each day I found myself playing git more and more and more and when THQ lost the rights to WCW they picked up the rights to the WWF and released a game that became my new favourite instantly, "WWF Wrestlemania" . But as the N64 was on it's way out, THQ gave one last release and made the best Wrestling game to date. I've played a lot of wrestling games, and a lot have come and gone, and a lot have had lasting value and quality, but none like this game. Next to Wrestlemania Arcade this game is the best.

There is a tonne of Wrestlers who each have 4 slots. What I mean by that is when you select your wrestler; you can select 4 different versions of that wrestler, with a different look of clothing, or hairstyle or something. Some even have a different character all together. You just press one of your buttons to toggle through them all. And a great option is that you can change every single character. You can change their cloths, name, music, everything except there moves. That mean you can completely replace a wrestler who is a default in the game if you want. Or you might just like to Change one of the 4 Rikishi's into Yokozuna, or change one of the slots of Kane and clone Undertaker so that he has the Tombstone as his finisher instead of the "Last Ride". The best thing about it is that you do not need a memory card; every thing is saved onto the cartridge itself!

There are heaps of matches, and you can choose pretty much whatever rules you want. From pin falls, hardcore, iron man, tag, 2 on 1, 3 on 1, cage, rumble, and even a great ladder much that is a lot of fun to play with friends. The best thing is you can now go back stage. You just whip your opponent up the entrance way, and you can fight in the stage area, then you can whip them back stage again and fight down a corridor that has doors that lead to the boiler room, a locker room with a table you can smash your opponent through, a pool room that you can slam your foe through the snooker table, and a car park. Back in the arena you can also send your enemy crashing through the announcers table! And you can pick weapons out of the crowed at any time, and even use the ring steps! There is a lot of Weapons to grab, almost everything from the WCW REVENGE game is back, but not all, but there is also great big beer cans, al snows Head, books, briefcases, fire extinguishers even a big cheese! There heaps to find.

You can battle in a kind of season match that has story lines to follow, but once you have completed that it becomes very boring, that has no lasting value there. There is also a survivor mode. Which is basically an iron man 4-way battle royal. You have to eliminate 99 other wrestlers to win! You can throw them over the rope to eliminate them, pin then, make them submit or TKO them. If you make it all the way through you get Andre The Giant as a hidden character and he becomes selectable, but the more opponents you eliminate, the more points you get to use in the shop. The shop is a place where you buy new things, from weapons, to costumes, even moves!

The create a wrestler is terrific. The moves look great, and there is so many more new moves added to the game then the last titles. Plus there about 20 slots with 4 each in them to choose from.

The controls work very well, and there is not just one special move to every one, all depending on where you are, wether you are grappling, at there feet, on the rope ect... then great moves can be done.

Where there is good, you have to accept the bad as well. If THQ where still making games for the 64 then they would not these flaws and use it to improve the next version, but everyone is done with the 64.

-No "in-ring" intro. Your wrestler comes out to his theme music and titan tron video, but he only poses on the stage area, they don't walk into the ring anymore and do there in ring poses.
-
-Tag team partners only come out together in season mode. They are separate intros in exhibition modes.
-
-It's really annoying in royal rumble modes when somebody is eliminated and you have to wait about 10 seconds for the next wrestler to run down to the ring and get in, they should have shown that in the back ground and let the game resume instead of doing it the way they have. It is also annoying when you have your "spirit" meter flashing to preform your special moves and it has run out by the time the next wrestler has gotten in the ring.
-
-They have taken out the test of strength showdown. In the last few games if both opponents tried to grapple at the same time they would lock into a test of strength and whoever was the better of the two would get the advantage to preform a move to break it up.
-
-The Undertaker's theme music is a song is RAW. Not whatever his theme song was at the time, either American Bad### by Kid Rock or Rollin,Rollin, Rollin by Limp Bizket. Why didn't THQ just give his old dark side theme or something?
-
-There are great double team moves, but there are a few missing, it would have been nice to have the "double choke slam" that Kane and Undertaker used to do. Or the Tennessee Jam that Too Cool did when one would hold there opponent in a back breaker and the other would jump of the top rope and leg drop the guy being held. Or the move the hardy boys do where one kneels down in a doggy position and the other springs off him for the sidekick.
-
-There is too many Mick Foleys; I think having 12 of him in the game is too many, particularly in Rumbles. But you can just edit over him.

Despite those flaws. This is still the best wrestling game there is. You probably would be able to fix some of those flaws in a rom version maybe, but this is the `still played by me' n64 version.

So layeth the smack down, if ya smell what the sock is cookin'. And that's the bottom line or you can suck it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite video game ever.
WWE No Mercy is hands down my favourite game ever. Even now, after it's been out for years and there are many superior video game consoles, it's still the best. Sure, it's pretty much the same game as WCW/NWO and Wrestlemania 2000, but there are upgrades. The create a character is much better, and there are more matches, such as ladder and first blood, and you can fight in different backstage areas. Also, there are many more moves to choose from. This game has given me countless hours of entertainment, and there will be many more to come. Check this out, especially since you can get it for so cheap now. ... Read more

Fear Effect

CD-ROM (27 February, 2000)

Editorial Review

Despite its unforgiving difficulty, Fear Effect is an innovativecinematic adventure that serious gamers won't want to miss. Set in a dark, futuristic world, Fear Effect has players switching back and forthbetween its three anime-style protagonists. With a story that's filledwith plot twists and heaps of what the Entertainment Software Rating Board findsoffensive, this is far from kiddie fare.

Easily one of the most visually striking PlayStation titles, Fear Effectshines with Japanese-animation-inspired 3-D character graphics andfull-motion-video environments that allow for nearly seamless transitions between storysequences and gameplay. With the exception of restoring saves and changing CDs,there's virtually no game interruption.

Unfortunately, it's very easy to die in Fear Effect, which not onlywrecks the game's pacing, but can be really quite maddening. Many portions ofthe game are more frustrating than challenging, requiring players to die andreload their last saved game over and over until they get things just right.

And while Fear Effect's less-than-perfect controls admittedly do takesome getting used to, its real-time inventory system is just plain awkwardduring combat sequences. It's doubtful that professional mercenaries like theones you're playing would be fumbling about while changing or reloading weaponsin the heat of battle.

Despite its flaws, Fear Effect does manage to keep you hooked, and is oneof those games you just have to see through to its end. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Striking cinematic visuals
  • Virtually no game interruptions
  • Intriguing storyline and refreshingly mature content
  • Fear Meter aspect adds new challenge
Cons:
  • Can be more frustrating than challenging at times
  • Awkward real-time inventory system
  • Relatively short game length with little to no replay value
  • May be unsuitable for younger players

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but very, very frustrating
I got this from Gamestop, for $5.00 used.I kept wondering if it was good or bad.Well it breaks down like this:
Pros:
-Great Graphics
-Great voice acting
-nice selection of weapons
-excellent storyline
-has a bit of comedy in it(Like when hana takes her towel off in front of a soldier, and Deke snaps his kneck)
Cons:
-Puzzles are COMPLICATED(I died, and tried many times trying to get them right)
-The inventory system takes too long for me to get a weapon, so I died sometimes, trying to get my favorite weapon
-After you play it the first time, there's no real thrill to play it the second time, unless you're trying to get the best ending on hard.

I still play this game when I want to, it's just that it's just not the same like the first time I played it, cuz I didn't know what was going to happen(I didn't use a guide because I didn't want to ruin the suprise, and man it was a painful long jurney)If you like games like Silent Hill or Resident evilm I would definitly recomend this game, but rent it first.

peace

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Game, Near Impossible at Times
Fear Effect as a whole is one the the funnest games I have ever played. You take the role of three characters: Hana, Glass and Deke. These characters are put into a Metal Gear Solid like environment, in that they have to sneek around some. Most of the time, though, you just have to mainly run and shoot your enemies. The enimies range from regular people to zombies from Hell.

The visuals in the game are done quite well, with a Anime characters and backdrop.Yet the controls might be tricky and hard to learn for some, if they haven't played Resident Evil. This amazing game, with the... pricetag from Amazon is a superb deal. But if you do not enjoy the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid or the controls of Resident Evil, I must say that you should stay away.

Editorial Review

The game that launched the Nintendo 64 system stands the test of time as one of the first andbest exploratory action/adventure games. Guide the legendary plumber through an incredibly vast magicalworld with never-before-seen movement and camera-angle freedom. Mario's got the moves with graduatedspeeds of running and walking, jumps, super jumps, bounce attacks, swimming, and more. The more youplay, the more moves you'll discover.

This industry milestone game lets gamers play at their own pace, encouraging them to explore new nooksand crannies of its many levels with a Zen-like approach where the journey is as important as the goal.Other N64 games such as Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64 all owemuch of their inspiration to this gem of a game. A showcase for the system's graphics and processing speedcapabilities, Super Mario 64 is a must-have for any N64 owner. --Jeff Young

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,but
Okay, the game is very addicting. The sound, graphics, gameplay is all great! But I discoverd something else funer. Super Mario 64 DS. That game is way better. This game is good but that game is something you can't keep your eyes off. Remember when you finish the game and eyerything to do and ther'es nothing left to do, well this DS game has mini games. They are very addicting and fun! You can draw on this as well. The adventure mode takes longer folks. You can play as Yoshi,Luigi,Mario Wario. In The beginning of Super Mario 64,you could just walk in. But thwe DS version is different. You have to collect a rabbit to get in. There is more room's in this castle too with more levels. Instead of collecting 120 stars. You have to collect 150. If you don't have enogh money for a DS and the game but have a N64,dust off the original and have some fun. Or go out and buy your DS and game. Get whatever. You have to play this though. If you don't think I'm right, then you will be sorry. ... Read more

Soul Calibur

CD-ROM (09 September, 1999)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Featuring graphics that surpass even the amazing NFL 2K, Soul Calibur is the martial arts fighting game to end all fighting games and the game to get if you're a Dreamcast owner. Based on the arcade classic of the same name, Soul Calibur lets you choose to represent one of 10 fighters in a series of battles against your peers. If you can successfully defeat all of your opponents, you will then face the fiendish Inferno in a final showdown that will determine the fate of the world. Each of the game's warriors is armed with a different deadly weapon--sword, ax, stave, nunchaku, you name it--and an assortment of special moves all tailored to that specific weapon. The warriors include men, women, and creatures from all over the globe and from various mythologies. Each is brought to life with amazing motion-capture animation, which results in incredibly lifelike and realistic duels. If you own a Dreamcast or are thinking of buying one, do yourself a favor and add Soul Calibur to your collection. --Mike Ryan

Pros:

  • Exceptionally lifelike graphics and animation
  • Multiple game modes--1-player, 2-player, team, computer vs. computer, martial arts demo, and more
  • Secrets and extra features will keep players coming back
Cons:
  • May be too violent for some parents

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
This is, without exception, the BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER MADE. PERIOD

Read the other reviews, everything positive said about this game is true.I know thats a bold statment but graphics, gameplay, story, modes, music, replayabilty is all EXCELLENT.

Don't listen to any Sony fanboys that are mad that Soul Calibur was a Dreamcast exclusive - It truly does live up to the "hype" (Its not really hype when its absolutely true, utterly amazing)

I hope you have the chance to enjoy the fighting game to end all fighting games.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Dissapointment
For The Love Of God Don't Believe The Hype! This game had so many people kissing it's butt it wasn't funny. I got it and it was a huge let down. Soul Blade on psone was better then this! Sure it's all pretty, but it's basically just a virtua fighter clone with wepons and smaller backgrounds.alot of the charactors are basicly the same (Astoroth&Rock/Mina&Kilick/Lizardman&Sophitia/Inferno&Edgemaster) The backgrounds while pretty are basically just the old 2-D backdrops used on the first 3-D fighters. The "innovative" world tour mode had been done in SFA3 already so that wasn't a huge plus either. Dead or Alive 2 kicked this things butt as did the painfull to play VF3. If you have either of those forget about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way ahead of its time
This is the definitive evolution in fighting games.I grew up on Street Fighter, then switched to Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, Powerstone, etc... but nothing has ever captured the essence of fun as much as the Soul Calibur series has done. This is the one fighting game that strangely does not turn off those who are not into fighting games. It is accessible enough to newcomers for them to just pick up and have fun with, yet at the same time, it holds the depth that will keep veteran gamers playing this for years as long as they have access to good human competition. The characters are not completely balanced, but that won't become noticeable until you actually play against really good people for a long while.Still, none of the characters are a waste and the variety of fighting styles are extremely well thought out and fun to watch.I especially like how they have an exhibition mode where you can just watch characters performed their motion captured katas by themselves in an empty ring. This game is simply beautiful in many ways. ... Rush 2 Extreme Racing USA
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Cartridge (24 September, 1999)

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA is the follow-up to the populararcade-turned-platform-game San Francisco Rush, offering the signaturerambunctious gameplay of the original with several welcomed new features. No longerlimited to zipping through the streets of San Francisco, drivers plow through expresstours of Seattle, New York (uptown and midtown), Los Angeles, Las Vegas, andHonolulu, among other tracks. An addictive new feature is a stunt track, where playersrack up points by performing spectacular jumps, in-air spins, flips, and loops. Ever seenskaters frolicking about at a skateboard park? Think bigger park with frolicking one-tonvehicles. Not the prettiest sight, but so much fun.

Obviously, this is a far cry from the traditional auto racing game. Rush 2 is anall-out, full-throttle action racer, with cars careening through shortcuts, performinggravity-defying leaps, and, occasionally, actually racing down the main track. One coolfeature (and slight annoyance): collecting keys and cans of a trademarkedhyper-caffeinated soft drink--carefully placed on the track by cunning marketingexecutives--opens new areas, offers new vehicles, and provides cheats. --EricTwelker

Pros:

  • Same out-of-control fun as the original, with new enhancements
  • Great offering of new tracks, cars, and secret features
  • Strong multiplayer appeal
Cons:
  • Graphics slightly outdated
  • Sound best enjoyed at an imperceptible volume

4-0 out of 5 stars Rush 2 review
Rush 2 is extremely fun with a wide variety of levels and cars. It has great graphics for its time and allows you to go backward in the levels-a trait which other video games of its generation do not possess. It also has a very fun stunt level where you build up points for the tricks you do. Cars range from limos to concepts and hatchbacks to corvettes. Also, the level that it allows you to specify your car at is amazing. It lets you change color of the cars in a two-tone style and even lets you decide which engine suits you best. Engines in cars ranges from dinky motor- scooter sounding lego motors to formula and V8 powerplants. Speed varies and a handy "cruise control" feature allows you to propel the car without pressing the "A" button. Instead you can just move the car with the control stick.
As far as glitches and cheats are concerned-there aren't many. The game rarely freezes or goes bolistic like I'm sure all gamers have seen before. Overall I think it's a great time and a riot to play. Thanks to Midway for making another great game.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rush Is Back
Throughout the games of Midway's length, many of theirvideo games were straight from the arcades, whether it was Mortal Kombat, or NFL Blitz. Nevertheless it was very rare to have a video game to come straight from the shelves, that wasn't from the arcades. That answer came through with the release of Rush 2.

The 1998 video game was made exclusively for the Nintendo 64, and not upon any other console. Ironically, the prequel, San Fransisco Rush, was made on both the N64, and the Playstation. The game features many exciting and enduring automobiles through the streets of some of the biggest cities in America, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. The game also includes the infamous Alcatraz prison, a hidden course from the previous Rush. Many fans were shocked to know why the game wasn't on any of the other consoles at the time. The sales for the Playstation version of Rush were just awful, and Midway chose to put this only on Nintendo 64.

While many people stopped purchasing Nintendo 64 games, Rush 2 remains as an absolute delight for any racer in the world. If you're looking for a reved up time, Rush 2 is that game for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Rush Game yet
I liked this game so much when I rented it I was sad to return it.This game has fun courses that have many shortcuts and jumps, and keys to find that give you more cars to pick. The course I enjoy the most is the stunt course.I got up to my top speed of my car on the course and ramped of the biggest ramp near the egde of the course and I got so high I went over the top of the wall and all of a the screen went blank and I could see my car and it was doing flips and it was going crazy, but it was giving me points, then I landed and I was driving but going no where.I kept on driving for a while and then just turned the game off.I think that was a glitch in the game. The game has good graphics and cool codes to punch in(like one of the codes makes your cars start on fire and you can still drive). This game is a Awsome race game to get.The courses shorts cut are very unique, like going down into a subway and and driving on the tracks(only downer about that is on some tracks subways come by and hit you).Awsome game to get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Editorial Review

The first Dreamcast installment in the Resident Evil series, Code:Veronica is "survival horror" at its finest. Unmatched in its ability toconvey a persistent feeling of dread--and scare the pants off of you ever sooften--this is one of those hard-to-put-down games that will keep you up forseveral nights on end.

The fourth chapter in the dark Resident Evil epic, Code: Veronica delvesfurther into the machinations of the sinister Umbrella Corporation, once againpitting players against zombies and other horrifying mutations created byUmbrella's biotechnological viruses. Players begin the game as Claire Redfield,Resident Evil 2's college-girl-turned-zombie-killer, and later controlChris Redfield, the beefcake cop from the original game. There's more strategyrequired here than in the previous games, as Claire's actions have a directimpact on Chris. For example, playing a trigger-happy Claire that uses everyhealth-restoring item in sight will call for some fancy footwork on the part ofbrother Chris.

While the basic game design here is largely unchanged from that of itsPlayStation predecessors, Code: Veronica features many visualrefinements--including exquisitely detailed 3-D character graphics, roamingcamera viewpoints, and spectacular atmospheric and lighting effects--thatgreatly enhance the cinematic feel of the game. Equally high production valuesare evident in the game's excellent use of ambient and dynamic sound effects.

Upon completing Code: Veronica, players are rewarded with "Battle Game,"a timed slaughterfest that can be played in third- or first-person point-of-viewand has rewards all its own. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Engrossing storyline and well-developed characters
  • Cinematic Dreamcast-enhanced graphics and excellent sound effects
  • Challenging, first-rate gameplay
  • "Battle Game" greatly increases replay value
Cons:
  • Despite nonfixed camera angles, viewpoint can still be awkward at times
  • Less than perfect controls

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game
Code Veronica is a good addition to the Resident Evil saga. Here's the breakdown:

Graphics-8/10- Compared to todays' games, the graphics are about average. Then again, the game is (almost) 5 years old. But it has rich 3D enviroments, and good definition in characters.

Sound-7/10- The music gives you the scary feeling you would expect from an RE game. The only bad thing is the voice acting. It aint horrible, just not what you expected. It's better than previous games.

Gameplay/Story developement-10/10- The gameplay itself is excellent. But, unlike the Dreamcast version of RE2, there is no custom controls. That would have made the gameplay better. The story continues directly from RE2 (RE3 did little to develop the Resident Evil Plot) and brings the fight to umbrella. To find out what happens to the characters, play the game.

Overall, the game's a hit. The Dreamcast version is the best, but if you don't have one, get it for PS2 or Gamecube.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in the series.
Simply put, Code Veronica is the best in the series. After RE2 I didn't think the series could get any better but I was wrong.CV had an amazing graphics and a superb camera system. The story was HUGE and awesome so this was the most time consuming RE at the time.I think the remake of RE on the Gamecube is longer (and 10 times scarier than the PSX version). If you have a Gamecube or DC and love adventure/action/horror games than Code Veronica and the rest of the series is definately for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why this game is SO F%$#@'IN AWESOME!!!
WOW! This is easily the best Resident Evil game EVER! I love everthing about it!

Editorial Review

GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognize the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so James must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up.

Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. James can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns.

The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive. The Rareware team spent time on the set with digital cameras, and it shows.

One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents.

With excellent gameplay, intelligence, and style, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter that'll keep you coming back for more. --Jeanne Uy

Pros:

  • Built-in save capability for up to 4 players
  • Auto-aim feature helps novice players feel like a sharpshooter
  • Rich, complex game world filled with detail and variety
  • Great bonus missions
Cons:
  • Sometimes cinematic scenes for fulfilling mission objectives are a bit anticlimactic

4-0 out of 5 stars DON`T DRAG ME BACK TO 1999 PLEASE
I didn`t first play this in `97 when it fired onto shelves,it was the best game i ever played with 25+ levels i nevaer made it to the very last level,i`m stuck on the Cuban mission thats right after the "Jungle".When i 1st played this back when i was 6(You can considder that too young to play it then) and my brother traded 1080:SnowBoarding game for it in senior school and when we turned it on i was really proud i didn`t realise that he was only swapping for a couple of months i was sad when it left every time i went into a game shop i would surch for it but they never had it! when i was 8 i had made up with 2 guys who had N.64s and i traded my WWF WarZone for Mission Impossible But it was good but not as good as my thoughts on GoldenEye i soon gave up my interests on my N.64 because we had put it into the attic and i got a blue GameBoy:Color i still dreamed of getting 007 Goldeneye and complete it i then got a PS2 and none of the games matched Goldeneye,it was still on top even after 3 years until i played GTA:Vice City and Driver 2 but i still wanted 007 GoldenEye(I Know it sounds more storyish). But one day i came up with a idea to get 007 GE. my friend who still has his N64 had goldeneye i traded Turok:Rage Warz for it and now i have it but im still styck on "UnderGround facility" level, but i still have the determination 2 complete it my self.I can not play my n64 bcos my GameCube has took its place cos i only have place for 2 consoles.Goldeneye is worth 100/100 points for it fun factor as u know you play James Bond and is set on the Movie and you get a good number of guns and the gore is good you can set bombs and use your watch as a lasergun 2 cut down metal locks and also to kill a Russion Soldier you also get a magnet 2 steal jail keys of the russian guard and make your escape before they send out the "Firing Squad" to gun you down as your Death Penalty in the game you will meet the Russian Soviet Union Army as enemies,Natalya and 006 Travalyen(face) as allies, secret agent scientist(in a disguise) to give you a key and Ourimov and Travalyan Janus(This time the enemy) and Onnatopp as boss enemies. This game will go down as a video game classic along with GTA3/VC/SA,Driver,1,2,3 and others it will be a Legend.
Bye(my review is loing)

3-0 out of 5 stars Goldeneye 007
Admittedly, Goldeneye 007 started it all. It may very well be the first FPS that was ever created.

There is nothing better than being Bond - brandishing the many weapons at his disposal (and this game has a sizeable arsenal), theQ Gadgets (who can say that they don't think the Watch Laser isn't cool?), and rubbing shoulders with the beautiful women that Bond attracts.

Goldeneye is a great game and will undoubtedly live within the sacred halls of the videogame museum (where other awesome videogames like GTAIII, Super Mario Bros., and GTA: Vice City live) forever. However, it is a bit dated now.

The graphics that seemed cutting-edge in 1995 now appear somewhat blurry. The character models - especially the faces - look blocky and unrealistic.

The music hasn't changed in ten plus years- I still find myself humming the "Statue Park" mission music. The sound produced from firing your weapons also sound awesome today. But the sound effects - especially the grunts and cries of dying enemies - are repetitious and unrealistic. In my opinion, the lack of voice talent also handicaps Goldeneye.

Multiplayer is still just as fun as it was ten years ago. The lack of suitable AI so that you can take on the "computer" by yourself makes multiplayer useless if you are playing Goldeneye alone. There are only a handful of multiplayer modes to choose from, and the combinations of weapons available are small. It would have been better had Rare allowed the player to at least customize which weapons they wanted to use within multiplayer.

In case you think that I am someone who has taken it upon myself to review Goldeneye without playing it, Goldeneye was my favorite videogame for a very long time. However, better videogames that fix the problems associated with Goldeneye have been released. Perfect Dark takes everything that is fun and "cool" from Goldeneye and enhances it. Goldeneye was a good game for its time, but Perfect Dark has all but completely eclipsed it with better multiplayer, cooler weapons, and sharper graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably a big help to the N64
Yeah this is one of the classics that blew away everyone (N64 MAGAZINES got better because of it!!!) and bonded friends and family for years on end. There was no other game like it. Empire magazine started writing better games reviews because of it. This was a mental good multiplayer in 1997. We all played this side by side for years.
