Mario Kart 64 Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (01 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for theSuper NES (SNES). And while the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphicspower and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compellinghave been left out of this release. Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, andMario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casualgamers) entertained. Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of asputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150-cc engine, the game lets players racecomputerized opponents or up to four other players on a variety of well-designed tracks.Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collectingpower-ups and nonlethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels.Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically-placedbanana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shelllaunches their vehicle skyward, and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneckspeeds, if only for a moment. The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players--flip it onat a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. --Eric Twelker Pros:

Star Wars:Super Bombad Racing Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Other than sporting a really cool name (come on, you know you like "Bombad"), Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing also offers some really big heads. Seriously, some hard-core Star Wars fans might disapprove of this whimsical kart-racing game based on their beloved franchise, but the less uptight will appreciate seeing Darth Maul, Yoda, Boss Nass, and others scaled down to Tiny Tunes dimensions. The object of the game is to race around movie-inspired tracks, picking up dozens of power-ups (including speed and shield boosts and some vehicle-specific tuners), and, of course, being the first to cross the finish line. And rather than having the technical sophistication of a game like Star Wars Starfighter, the controls here are easy enough for the youngest Jedis to master. ... Read more Reviews (24)
There really isn't anything to work up to while playing this game.Basically, the tracks do not add enough entertainment, and power-ups become nearly pointless in this game.I truly think the animations and the look of the game is great!Still, it is too simplistic of a game concept without an innovative racing system to catch my interest long enough.I happened to enjoy Star Wars Podracing for the Nintendo-64 a lot better. I should've known better not to buy this just because it was a Star Wars games.I guess Star Wars games can be poor too.Game features seemed to be cut too short to even captivate interest long enough. Pros:Simple to understand Cons:Not fun for long I'd rather play Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Double Dash, or even Star Wars Podracing before this game. Great to try and play for a while.Boring to play for long.
There are the regular race courses, where you learn how to drive each character. They're all a bit different from each other, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Try to get through all the courses to unlock secret options and characters. Like most of these games, though, it really gets fun when you bring on another human. Suddenly you've got a little Darth Maul chasing after a little Yoda, blasting away! With four players it gets even more hilarious. A relatively short game on the single-player side, but endless fun with friends and family! ... Read more Asin: B00005AW1Y |

Crash Team Racing Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (27 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $19.89 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review PlayStation owners no longer need to borrow their friend's Nintendo 64 inorder to have a rollicking good old time racing virtual turbo-charged go-karts throughoutlandish environments. Crash Team Racing does an excellent job of re-creatingthat same thrill on the PlayStation. Crash Team Racing has all the marks of the kart-racing genre, includingbig-headed characters driving diminutive go-karts, power-ups to increase speed and slowdown opponents, and thematic tracks with multiple paths for exploration. WhatCTR adds to the mix is fairness: tighter-turning cars are rewarded for precisiondriving, skillful jumping, and strategic placement of booby traps. Sure, the playing fieldis level, but the better the driver, the better chance he or she has of winning consistentlywithout any annoying "catch-up code." The one-player game is wonderfully presented as an exploratory adventure, while themultiplayer mode is a split-screen must-play for anyone with a PlayStation (and, ofcourse, friends). Twenty-five tracks, 12 characters, and responsive control makeCTR the gotta-have racing game. --Jeff Young Pros:

Looney Tunes : Space Race Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (11 December, 2000) list price: $24.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Looney Tunes: Space Race features eight all-time favorite characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Taz, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, and Wile E. Coyote. The 12 tracks include shortcuts, jumps, and traps, and there are over 40 competitive events. Players can pummel opponents with gags like the portable hole, falling elephants, retractable boxing glove, and instant storm. Up to four players can race at a time. ... Read more Reviews (12)
The graphics is the games only high point! The tracks have no barriers so you can FALL OFF ALMOST EVERY ONE. This makes for a steep learning curve and may be a turn-off for some. Back to the items, because there are so many to be used by you and the computer you never really enjoy the racing element. If you win a race its because of pure luck (i.e getting a useful item at the right time) and not due to skill...BIG turn off. With unforgiving AI opponents, lame items, gameplay based on luck and uninspired tracks you could make this a rental or a borrow from a friend...just don't but!! Mario Kart annyone?
Unfortunately, it falls a little flat in a number of areas.Control is consistent and acceptable, but the hover-scooters just don't do it for me.The tracks play like an extremely easy version of Wipeout. What was wrong with using karts? It's the control, which honestly might be a little TOO precise and TOO fast for its own good that makes the game seem monotonous. The easy tracks are far too easy and the rollercoaster tracks are all fairly similar in how they are played. For those of you who have played Crash Team Racing, you'll miss the variety, the jumps and mud bogs, the tight courses, the ones on ice, and the speedy ones with lots of obstacles. Second, there are a TON of power ups, and the computer, as in most kart games, cheats like crazy. The power ups always provide the randomness to the gameplay, but in this particular game, the near contstant beatings you'll take make the game unbearable at times, constantly stopping and starting again. That said, winning is a fairly simple matter.Get a bunch of rocket boosts, sit back in the middle or back of the pack where you're somewhat protected, and in the final stretch, blast past the competition.Works most of the time, and is a perfect example of just how talent and skill are devalued by this game. All this would be at least a little tolerable if the game held up to its promise of being an immersive Looney Tunes environment.True, the tracks will all look familiar to those of you who have watched enough Bugs Bunny cartoons (especially from the Chuck Jones era) to memorize the lines by heart, and true, the Acme powerups (straight out of a Roadrunner cartoon) are as cool and well done as any you'll see in any kart game, and yes, the characters are well animated, BUT, the game loses it's luster when, halfway through the first race, you've already heard all five of Daffy Duck's catch phrases.Woulda been nice if they would have given the characters, I dunno, maybe another twenty or so things to say AND if they wouldn't talk so much that you'll get tired of them and want to turn the sound down.Of course, their talking is usually in direct response to either using a power-up on someone else, or getting blown up yourself, which, as I mentioned earlier, happens about every ten seconds in some races. I picked this came up ... used, and that's an acceptable price for it.Unfortunately, the DC will die without the cart game that it should have had. It's obvious a lot of work went into this one, and it's a shame that usability testing didn't make this game everything that it could have been.

Toy Story Racer Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (04 March, 2001) list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review While Andy's away, the toys will play--or in this case, they'll race around in pintsize vehicles. Toy Story Racer is a kart racing game that features 10 characters from the popular film series, including Woody, Buzz, and Hamm the pig, each with his or her own unique vehicle. There are 20 racetracks and a variety of power-ups to edge you toward infinity (though not beyond). In addition to racing through film-inspired environments, players can fulfill different quests, which make the game unfold like a storybook. Success opens up further quests and characters. The game's artificial intelligence adjusts the competitive drive of computer opponents to each player's abilities, so younger fans of the Toy Story films who are new to video games won't get frustrated by constantly eating Woody's dust. ... Wacky Races Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (30 June, 2000) list price: $44.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Wacky Races is a cross between South Park Rally andMario 64, and stars classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters. While thiskart racing game doesn't really bring anything new to the racing genre, it doesbring hours of lighthearted fun. All the members of the motley crew from the cartoons are here, includingPenelope Pitstop, Dick Dastardly, Muttley--even the Slag Brothers. They've allcome with their trademark vehicles, from the Slag Brothers' rock-solid,relentless Boulder Mobile to Peter Perfect's turbocharged, streamlined TurboTerrific. To add the always-present fighting element, the cars come with theirown individual features to help you get around the numerous courses. A title ideal for keeping younger kids busy while not appearing totally alien tothe rest of us, this game boils down to a kid-friendly version of South ParkRally. The colorful cartoon graphics give you the feeling that you're in thecartoon itself. --Mike Fehlauer ... Read more Reviews (5)
It is set up sort of like Diddy Kong Racing on N64,where you start out in a central area and have to drive to and open up newareas. The graphics are simply incredible, and the audio is good aswell. The game uses the new cel shading techniques to make it look exactlylike a cartoon, and it uses the Dreamcast's power well. It also controlswell and is easy enough for anyone to pick up and play. Each car has somespecial functions that you get to select up to three of, and they cost"tokens" which you pick up around the track. For example, turboboost is usually 1 or 2 but something more fancy would be 3 tokens.Itadds a lot of strategy to the racing because the game is basically boileddown to a kart type racer in that you have to use your weapons/skillsinstead of pure driving skill. But that's what these types of games areabout, fun! Even 2 player mode maintains a solid frame rate, which isvery impressive indeed. I'd say if you enjoy cartoons and kart racers, this game is a must buy! ... Read more Asin: B00004S9WU |

Penpen TriIcelon Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (20 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For those of you who thought the Teletubbies were strange, watch out: here come the Penpens. Bizarre cartoon penguins and half-penguins, the Penpens live on an icy world far away. Once a year, they compete in a grand three-part race of belly-surfing, ice-walking, and swimming: the TriIcelon. Each racecourse features all three events, tied together with a unique theme such as Candy Land, Haunted House, or Toy Land. Kids and the young at heart are sure to get a kick out of the goofy Penpen characters. And controls are extremely simple: there's a general action button, used to jump while walking or to stroke while swimming or belly-surfing, and an attack button, which causes your Penpen to try to knock down a fellow TriIcelon contestant. These two features, and the game's cartoonish concept, make Penpen TriIcelon the most kid-friendly game available as of the Dreamcast's launch. --Michael Fehlauer Pros:

Chocobo Racing Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (16 November, 1999) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Combining the action/adventure and racing genres, Chocobo Racing follows in the footsteps ofpopular "car-toon" titles Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart. While the cutesy bird character Chocobolacks the mainstream notoriety of Mario or Crash, the kooky creature will likely appeal to fans of the popular FinalFantasy series. Chocobo makes a successful flight from sidekick to star in this quirky racer, which features sevencompeting cartoon characters including White Mage, Mog, and Golem. All of the racing characters possess special powers and unique tracks designed around their personas. ChocoboRacing contains five challenging racing modes, including grand prix (four-track tournament), time attack, versus(two-player racing), relay race, and story mode. We were particularly intrigued by the story mode, which placesChocobo in an old-fashioned pop-up storybook as he aims to collect several scattered blue crystals. We also liked the high replay value of this game. For example, a racing victory may reward players with the ability tocustomize a character. Chocobo Racing is far from a sophisticated racer--and, in fact, that is part of the appeal. This is an easy game to learn, so younger players can pick up a controller and play with little trouble. Still, plenty ofchallenges hide in the detailed tracks, which are filled with time-zapping traps and treacherous curves. --CarrieBell Pros:
