    Editorial Review

Brother Bear has a dramatic story--after he kills a bear, a young hunter named Kenai (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix, Gladiator) in prehistoric North America is turned into a bear himself and hunted by his own brother--but the animated movie's tone is more earnest and warm than tragic, focusing on the unfolding relationship between Kenai and an orphaned bear cub named Koda (voiced by Jeremy Suarez). However, it's often the comic supporting characters who prove the most popular, and a pair of moose voiced by Rick Moranis and Doug Thomas in their McKenzie brothers/Canadian dude mode (from SCTV and the movie Strange Brew) will win many fans. The songs by Phil Collins are typically negligible, but the hand-drawn animation is lush (occasional flashes of computer-generated animation clash with the movie's overall look). Kids will also enjoy the mammoths; no sabre-toothed tigers, unfortunately. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Story!
Brother Bear brought this Mom to tears!A lovely story and wonderful depiction of Native Americans. My two year old daughter loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a boy who became a man by being a bear
"Brother Bear" was a great Disney film of high calibur.

A warrior hunter who hunts bears becomes one himself and sees the tests and tribulations that threatened the species of the nature the bear. During this time, the hunter, becomes aware of his crimes against the bear and the animals who roam the wilderness. Throughtout the movie , Keinai (Jaoquin Phoenix)\
then goes through a transformation of spirituality, morals
    and good will.

Kenai is part of a warrior hunter that also shows how Native
American people love animals, contrary to what other people
in states do, huting animals for sport in the US. Sitka
(voice of DB Sweeney) is older and wiser native American soldier that was killed by an enormous bear although he loved the fauna. Kenai (voice of Joaquin Phoenix) demands justice and hunts
    for bears.

He looks for the bear that killed hisbrother in spite of its other brother, objections of Denahi. Kenai finds the bear possible that killed its brother. Kenai during this fight with
the bear obtains a vision of the ghost of Sitka. Kenai causes possible the death of this bear. Despite a its shock, Kenai transforms into abear!

ThenKenai he sees what it is like to live like a bear and sees some of his own false ideasand prejudices agaisnt the bear andnature itself.Kenaisees that bears like man, these animals have families who take to well-taken care of from their own means. Kenai also sees its own crime in killing a bear when he
learns that the bear has a cubnamed Koda. Koda is an orphaned lazy bear that is lost its mother. The twist for Koda and Kenai (now as bear) comes near the end when both make what really happened to the mother of Koda.

Eventually Kenai learns the wrong that he did and comes to grips
with it and eventually changes his mentality against the bears.

The 2 disc DVD for Brother Bear is nothing short of beautiful,

5-0 out of 5 stars Steering Clear of Mainstream
Disney have once again shown their incredible diversity for being able to bring to light different cultures and the struggles associated with growing up. This helps them steer clear of the mainstream fairy tales that they have built their name upon, which while creating a solid platform to work from, has given them a dedicated audience ready in ingest anything Disney throw a them. This is a powerful tool and should be used appropriately. Disney have done that with Brother Bear. This film depicts the struggle of a canadian inuit boy coming to grips with his maturing mind and the internal struggle he faces when forced by his spirit guides to live life through the eyes of those he despises.
As a film with tangible references to the similar struggles faced by todays society, it is worth watching over and over again. Made even more emotive by a spine-chilling soundtrack by legendary Phil Collins, Brother Bear touches a chord in all of us.
The DVD's interactive features allows the user to navigate their way through the various options a learn more about the film and its inspiration. An absolute must for the family. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Unlike Disney's other sequels to their classic films, this follow-up tothe 1953 version of Peter Pan debuted in theaters. World War II hasturned Wendy's preteen daughter, Jane, into a realist, a girl who insiststhere's no need for stories and fun while London is crumbling. Hook kidnaps Jane(thinking she's Wendy) and returns to "the second star to the right" to foilPan. Alas, the film doesn't build on this new story line (the London scenes havethe most emotional impact), and what follows is a thin reworking of theoriginal. On the plus side, a clever octopus takes over from that old crocodile, and Jane turns out to be a solid--and modern--role model. Those from ages 4 to 9who have been brought up on the original should enjoy these adventures, even ifthe story, like Peter himself, "hasn't grown up." The 72-minute film is shownwith the delightful 1948 short "Pluto's Fledgling." --Doug Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Like a kid again
I am still very young but no longer a child. When I watched this movie it made me remeber what it was like to be a kid again. All you have to do is believe, but it is so hard to believe. That was Jane's problem she was growning up to fast because of the war. I think this movie was great. i think for all those people out there who have trouble believeing you should watch this.

    Editorial Review

This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive). --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A novel idea
It must have seemed like a good idea on paper. Take a much loved childrens classic like "Treasure Island" and update it with a good splash of "Star Wars." Get the same guys that produced previous hits like "Aladdin" and "The Little Mermaid" and surely the result will be a winner.
    Well, not entirely.
I went into the latest Walt Disney animated movie "Treasure Planet" really wanting to love it. I grew up just an hour away from Edinburgh and many times passed the island in the center of that city which, the tourist brochures tell us, served as an inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island".
The mesh of classic literature and science fiction does occasionally create a magical moment when you are left saying to yourself "wow, now that was cool," but during too many instances in that movie theater I found myself wondering what I should pick up for dinner or, more telling, what this movie could have been, should have been.
It's novel to have the space ships in this production based on the design of the galleons that cruised the seas during Stevenson's time, complete with sails to capture the suns energy rather than the wind. It was interesting to see the character of Long John Silver turned into a cyborg with a shape shifter on his shoulder instead of a parrot.
The rogues galley of aliens and a robot that owes more than a casual nod to C-3PO also add color to this production, but it really is a mixed bag.
The story is so well known that it seems almost unnecessary to produce here. Young, adventurous and impetuous Jim Hawkins dreams of escaping the dreary life he leads and sailing the open sea, errr, I mean space. Then one night he rescues a dying traveler who has on his person a treasure map. Following his dreams he embarks on an adventure across the universe in search of untold wealth.
This movie may be fun for the kids - which I guess was the target audience for this production, but adults would be better served throwing the newly remastered DVD of "Bambi" into the DVD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars OK, after watching this movie...
I am very impressed with this movie. The thought that went into the design alone is--just-----INSANE!!The number of designs and concepts they went through is sheerly amazing. The animation is pretty good, not to mention the lovely blend of CG and 2D; it doesn't distract or pull the eye away from performance unless it's meant to or you're looking for an excuse to pummel Disney movies. The staging is great--every single scene is well-planned, furthers the plot, and is totally comprehensible while still managing subtlety and understatement. The gadgets are amazing, the ships, environments, characters--all fantastical, yet believable. As for breathing air on the ships--they had their own gravity field, right? Not to mention that other movies have done the exact same thing (even the much-worshipped and glorified anime genre has!); people just have this need to pick on Disney and put anime on a pedestal.I'm not saying either is better than the other, just that everybody THINKS that one is better than the other.I could write a book just about animation and people's idiotic opinions.I mean, just..."You let me know when I'm rambling!"

Ahem... The commentary is helpful as to explaining any scruples veiwers might have, although everything is (to my view) sufficiently explained in the movie OR better left to the imagination.
As for un-funny comedy, watch Amelia perform for ten seconds and you'll change your mind. All the comic relief characters (even Morph! how weird is that!?) are there with a PURPOSE, to ADVANCE the plot. When they aren't, they're at least interesting to look at.

I think this movie worked extremely well, and my only question is, "WHY DIDN'T IT DO BETTER?!?!?"This could have been an instant classic.I mean, "The Little Mermaid" was; all it had to its advantage was that it
    a) came after the Dark Age of Disney, and
    b) had really good music.
Just--watch this movie.Even if you hate it, remember how hard people worked on it (the directors had wanted to make it since 1985).See ya!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!
Treasure Planet was a positive surprise, and I am a big Disney-fan! Fantastic animation, good story. The music, well, it was a treasure itself found to hear the voice of John Rzeznik, his two songs are superb! The rest of the soundtrack suits the movie as well. What an adventure!

Of course when you watch a Disney-movie you have got to keep in mind that it's a childrens' movie (basically that is) - so to the reviewers who claims Treasure Island to be unrealistic, sorry, but haven't you perhaps missed a great point here? (I mean: "What do they breathe?"!!)

People have, of course, a right not to find the movie amusing, but it must be considered that it's a fantasy-movie. Fish don't communicate the way they do in Finding Nemo either, in "Fantasyworld" everything is possible!

    Another great classic from Disney!

    Editorial Review

What's really, really cute? A kid that doesn't know the meaning of some words yet, but really, really wants to. LeapPad's multisensory, experiential interface makes kids want a big vocabulary--in a bad way. With Richard Scarry's Things to Know, kids see, hear, say, and touch throughout the story, enhancing oral, vocabulary, and phonics lessons given throughout the book. At the same time, Scarry's characters help to identify and pronounce new words and pronounce old words correctly.

It's simple to use (just insert the cartridge and book into a LeapPad, and use the attached stylus to hear information), but this system is an innovative technology that provides entertaining, effective learning, designed by a Stanford-trained reading expert. The system also has been credited with the TMA's Educational Toy of the Year and People's Choice awards.

Two notes: Make sure the LeapPad book you get is appropriate for the child's educational level, and know that some LeapBooks (like this one) work on both LeapPad and LeapPad Pro, but some only work with one system. --Diane Beall ... Read more

We had this book and it was destroyed by our cat. We love it so much we are purchasing it again! My 4 year old loved it for over a year and now my 15 month loves it.We have several Leap Pad books and this one is by far the favorite of my two boys.I like it because it does not just tell a story like many Leap Pad books do, it allows kids to count, find items, and listen to music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must own!
Another must own of the leap pad series of books. This book encourages colors, shap recognition and counting while teaching kids about their seasons, musical instruments and more.On the seasons pages, they learn extra tunes including a little bit of "The Entertainer".They also learn their opposites and the importance of being polite. The best bonus is that your child's vocabulary and self-esteem get a boost. ... The Aquadoodle isn't a pool or tub toy, but without water it's no fun at all. It's just a drawing mat after all, but kids will like the novelty of its disappearing colors. The 81 by 53-inch drawing mat is large enough for several kids to doodle on at a time, using the included magic marker pens that do not transfer color to other surfaces (to our knowledge …). Color from the pens appears when water touches the mat; it then fades out without a trace in 60 seconds or so. That's it: no ink, no paint, and no mess.Diane Beall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay toy
My daughter got this for christmas, she really doesn't play with it that much. But I also don't keep it out all the time as I don't want it to get dirty. So alot of the time I forget we even have it.When she does play with it, she won't let me color with her so I did purchase a couple more markers at walmart.I don't remember if they were cheap or not.And I think they came 3 in a pack, again not sure though. As stated in another review you could use Q-tips, sponges, etc.For some reason I never thought if that.I did notice that if you try to draw something it dries very quickly. For instance if you were to draw a house, and did the outline of the house first then moved on to the windows the outline would be almost dry while you were working on the inside. But I guess little kids who are still young won't mind.Bigger kids might though. As also stated in other reviews the mat you color on is very wrinkly which does make it annoying. Not really a problem just annoying. My 2 yr old daughter doesn't mind the slight flaws so for her it is a good toy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this..theresno mess to clean up...LOVE LOVELOVE IT
Worth the money...if u have more than one kid..by another water pen..

4-0 out of 5 stars Portable Coloring Fun with No Mess
The Aquadoodle mat lets kids spread out on the floor and explore their creative side without any worries about the mess associated with markers or paints. Its ingenious design works fantasically - when any part of the mat gets wet, it turns blue;as it dries, it goes back to white. It's as simple as that.

Others have pointed out that it only comes with one pen, but keep in mind you can use anything to make the mat wet. We've used fingers, hands and feet to draw, towels and crumpled up paper to make textures, cookie cutters to make shapes, art brushes to flick droplets, etc. What others see as a limitation is actually a strength - don't box your child into having to use the one pen provided and see what he or she comes up with when playing.

This creative flexibility turns out to be the educational strength of the mat, although there are stencils of the alphabet in the drawing area that your child can use to practice making letters. The objects printed around its border are more decorative (you can't color them), and also pretty limited in terms of teaching vocabulary.

The mat measures about 2.5 feet square but rolls up easily to about the size of a compact umbrella, making it an easy choice to bring to grandma and grandpa's house. It is backed with waterproof vinyl, so no matter how much coloring your kids do on it, the floor underneath should remain protected. We've had several occasions where our little one has tipped over a small bowl of water on his Aquadoodle, but no moisture got through its backing. The only downside to such torture-testing is that it can take a while for the mat to dry and be ready for more coloring.

So don't be discouraged by the other reviews that have written off the Aquadoodle because it supposedly lacks accessories. Its simple yet flexible design means that there are countless things around the house that can be used as drawing tools, and your child will really enjoy discovering all of them and their unique results. This is a great rainy-day toy for ages two and up.

    PROS
*Enables creative playtime with no mess
*Plenty big for two people to use at once, but also rolls up very compactly
    *Reusable, and therefore economical

    CONS
*Only displays one color (chalky blue)
*Can take a while to dry/reset its surface for more coloring ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spike the Stegosaurus
Dinosaurs are the coolest thing that ever happened to Imaginext. While the pirate and medieval themes are cool, this prehistoric theme takes the prize for ultra coolness. The premise here is simple enough.Predators versus non-predators.Carnivores versus herbivores.

Spike the Stegosaurus is one of the good guys. He's a pretty good action figure, sporting posable legs and a head that moves back and forth.A button on his left side causes his spiked tail to whip back and forth.Spike is just as charismatic as the rest of the Imaginext dinosaurs, with a cute expression on his reptilian face.He sports a nice paint job of light green and purple, and some nice designs on his body that add flavor to him.

Spike doesn't have a saddle for a rider. The spikes on his back prevent this.Nevertheless, a cave man figure is included. He's a tribal guy who carries prehistoric weapons. He has some great posability in the arms, and his hands do a great job of grasping items.I haven't had any problems with items falling out of his hands.

Spike and his cave-man buddy are durable and constructed from soft plastic. The spikes on the stegosaurus's back and tail are rounded at the ends (no sharp points). This is a cute dinosaur action figure and a nice addition to the Imaginext collection. My verdict:thumbs way up!Spike is cool! ... Thunder the Brontosaurus is one of the good guys. He's one of the biggest dinosaurs, about twice the size of the triceratops, stegosaurus, and allosaurus. He has posable legs and tail. His long neck can move back and forth, and left and right.Atop his neck, his cute little head can move up and down.A trigger under his belly causes his right foreleg to stomp on the ground, accompanied by sound effects and a dinosaur roar.Thunder has plenty of charisma, displayed in a cute expression on his face.He looks like he's determined to stop those nasty predators from hurting his friends. He has a great paint job of light and dark greens, and the designs on his body add flavor.

On Thunder's back is a really nice saddle for a cave man figure to ride. The included cave man wears a sabertooth tiger skin headdress and carries a club. He's got some great posability in the arms, and his hands do a great job of grasping items.

Also included are three red raptors.Unfortunately, they're not posable like the rest of the dinosaurs are (would've been nice if they were). Each raptor has a different pose.Team them up with Slasher the Allosaurus and Razor the T-Rex, and your predators are ready to rumble with Thunder and the good dinosaurs.

Better than I expected. It's very rugged, it opens it's mouth when you pull the trigger and roars (which I didn't expect). My son loves it.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty cool
My daughter is facinated by monsters and dinasours and was captivated by this toy.The main problem is that at 5 she has a some problems keeping the parts from coming apart while playing (and keeping her baby sister away from them), so it ends up being kept away except when I can monitor. Some of the parts have already been lost and may be better for older kids. But the look is great and definately excites the imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good but consider the TRex instead
We got both the TRex and the Allosaurus. Our boy loves them both, but for the extra five bucks the TRex is about twice as big and it roars. So if you're only buying one, I'd go with TRex.

My son got this as a gift for his 4th birthday. We've never seen these before but the second he unwrapped it, it became his newest, most bestest toy ever!

We're going to buy more with some of his birthday money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slasher the Allosaurus
Dinosaurs are the coolest thing that ever happened to Imaginext. While the pirate and medieval themes are cool, this prehistoric theme takes the prize for ultra coolness. The premise here is simple enough.Predators versus non-predators.Carnivores versus herbivores.

Slasher the Allosaurus is one of the bad guys. He's a cool action figure with some nice features. He has posable legs and tail, and his head is on a ball joint that allows for super posability. You can move his head up, down, left, right, and pose him in any number of ways. His jaw opens.Slasher has an impressive set of teeth for chomping on his prey after a morning of good hunting.A trigger under his belly causes him to slash with his claws. He's a charismatic dinosaur with a cute "menacing" expression and a cool paint job of orange and brown. The designs on his body add flavor to him.

On Slasher's back is a saddle for a cave man figure to ride. The included cave man and accessories are just as cool as Slasher is.He's a tribal figure who carries a spear. He's got some great posability in the arms, and his hands do a great job of grasping items. He's got that Imaginext quality that made the pirate and medieval figures so cool.

Slasher and his cave-man buddy are durable and constructed from soft plastic. This is a really nice dinosaur action figure and a great addition to the Imaginext collection. My verdict:thumbs way up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tank the Triceratops
Dinosaurs are the coolest thing that ever happened to Imaginext. While the pirate and medieval themes are cool, this prehistoric theme takes the prize for ultra coolness. The premise here is simple enough.Predators versus non-predators.Carnivores versus herbivores.

Tank the Triceratops is one of the good guys.I've long been a fan of the triceratops, and I have to say, this is the best triceratops action figure I've seen.Tank has posable legs and tail, and a trigger under his belly causes him to raise his head to head-butt those nasty carnivores while his jaw opens. He also has plenty of charisma. His eyes, his expression, everything is fantastic! He has a wonderful paint job of light and dark green, and the designs on his body were a really nice touch.

On Tank's back is a saddle for a cave man figure to ride. The included cave man and accessories are just as cool as Tank is.He's a tribal figure who carries a spear. He's got some great posability in the arms, and his hands do a great job of grasping items. He's got that Imaginext quality that made the pirate and medieval figures so cool.

Tank and his cave-man buddy are durable and constructed from soft plastic.Tank's horns are rounded at the ends (no sharp points). This is an impressive and lovable dinosaur action figure, and a great addition to the Imaginext collection. My verdict:thumbs way up!Tank is ultra cool! ... Read more
