    Editorial Review

This talking book comes with an interactive "magic pen" that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as "Strike one!" for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games.--Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I would pick this over the writer's Leappad
I have both a LeapPad+Writing and regular LeapPad like this one, and I can honestly say that the extra writing feature is not worth the extra money.Stick with the LeapPad regular and get a lot of LeapPad readers.Make sure that you don't buy this if you have babies that tear things up, though. My son has all the LeapPad books, but half of them are unsalvageable because of my toddler that likes to chew on EVERYTHING.The LeapFrog customer service is awesome, though... they have replaced my books for $10 each so I don't have to go out to buy new ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Toy I have ever bought
I bought a pink and purple LeapPad for my daughter when she was three for Christmas. She is five now and still plays with it every single day. Everytime a birthday or Christmas rolls around she asks for more LeapPad books. This toy has been a godsend during car and plane trips, hotel and restaurant entertainment, and any other situation when children need to sit still.

She has learned the alphabet, numbers, spelling, and reading from countless hours on this pad. She owns several books and each get used all the time. I think this is honestly the best toy invented in a long time. She has been able to figure it out because it is well thought out for the young user. They can hit the stop button with the pen to stop it, or hit the Go button to continue each story. Each book also has games and other activities, so they are well worth the money. It is impossible for my daughter to get bored with it because each book is countless hours of reading, games, music, and excitement.

I encourage all parents of young children to buy this LeapPad. It is well worth the money. It is a toy that they will not grow out of in a short amount of time because the books range in ages.It is not only educational but very durable. Our LeapPad has been dropped countless times and is still intact. The only complaint I do have is that it tends to consume batteries quickly and you need a screw driver to take off the cover to put new ones in. Other than that, that is the only negative I have to say about the LeapPad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Toooo sloooowww for my boy
My boy has the attention span of a 4 year old. Why? Because he is 4 years old. He has no patience for the slow pace of age-appropriate leap pad materials. The learning games are too short, too slow, and too repetitive for him. ... Read more

In the Leap Start Disney Lion King Stories, kids see, hear, say, and touch, making it easier to retain and enhance vocabulary and phonics skills while developing concrete reading comprehension. Alex got this for Christmas and absolutely loves it! This is neck and neck w/Finding Nemo as his favorite LeapPad book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suggestions and Great reviews!!!
The leap Pad and its books have been wonderful for my children.I do have a few ideas for improvements like putting all the leap pad books into a holder like what the "Smart guides" are sold in and also that the books need to be more durable (like wipeable pages and more durable pages for the preschoolers). Also there needs to be more of the characters that the preschoolers like ( dora the explorer, blues clues, mickey, monsters Inc, sesame street, george shrinks, bearstrain bears, dragon tales, more bible stories, etc).

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tie-in to the movie...
My twin boys are 2 1/2 and they love their leap pad. They have watched the Lion King and loved the movie. We like this book because we can go over different parts of the movie on a slower pace rather than by just watching the movie. It's a wonderful addition to the leap pad library ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where are we going? Clap! Clap! Clap! - CRAZY!!!!!!!
Due to inclement weather, I found myself housebound with a two year old (not mine) and an almost four year old (mine). With apologies to Dr. Seuss, it was too wet to go out and too cramped to stay in, but we had to make the most of it.

Fortunately, this DVD was on top of the pile, and it was an instant hit with both boys.In no time at all they were singing along with Dora, Boots, Backpack and Map, and enjoying participating in the activities.

This DVD has four adventures, each involving Dora and her friends following a map, finding clues and overcoming obstacles. It's a learning experience hidden in a fun cartoon, as Dora stares at you with her huge brown eyes, while talking about colors, counting, encouraging problem solving and introducing some Spanish words. It should have something of interest for ages one to five, without ever being boring.

For adults it's a different matter after you've heard it the first five times or so, as the repetitive nature of the songs and activities slowly drills a hole in your skull, exposing every nerve ending to the strident "I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the maaaaaap" and "Backpack, Backpack, Backpack, Backpack..."

Anyway, the price of a pair of earplugs and the inconvenience of having to schedule a lobotomy is a fair trade for keeping the kids from going stir crazy and fighting each other, especially when you hear them using Spanish words and watch them having fun learning.

Just go with the flow, and join in yelling "SALTA" while you jump over the imaginary watermelons rolling through your living room.

    Amanda Richards, January 27, 2005

3-0 out of 5 stars Drives us crazy, but she likes it.
I am not a fan of Map's voice and his "I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the map I'm the maaaaaaaap!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
We've had this toy for four months and it has been played with quite a bit by our two preschoolers! However, the knife broke within the first week of use. The kids found a plastic play knife to use instead and don't seem to mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars my 20 month old son loves this toy
This set of little pieces of wooden food attached with velcro is endlessly interesting to my son, he plays with it at length and returns to it after other activities. We were somewhat concerned about the safety of hime using the wooden knife, but it seems blunt and curved enough to not be a danger.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the little dinosaur fan!
My 5yr old loves this book. Well, he loves dinosaurs and we saw this story and had to get it. We both laugh everytime we read it.

A TRex, rather than the big bad wolf, thinks he is going to make cheeseburgers out of the three little dinosuars. Each gets away even though the TRex refers to them as piggies! It's a hoot; clever story and funny illustrations.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Superb re-telling
As a soon to be teacher, this will definately be a book found on my classroom shelf. The artwork is great, the characters are witty, and it brings the Three Little Pigs up to today's lifestyle in sarcasm and in the pictures.I recommend this to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best looking Dinos book
The Three LittleDinosaurs by Jim Harris is a great take on the Three Little Pigs story. Baby dinosaurs replace the pigs and the wolf is a hungry T-Rex that won't stop stalking the little pigs. The illustrations are the best I've seen in a kid's book - my favorite so far. While the story follows the tried and true Three Little Pigs fable, it has a great twist on the ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandson Loves It!
I have to say that my 3 year old grandson loves this puzzle. In fact, he loved it so much that I bought him 2 other puzzles by Doug & Melissa.I like them because the pieces are big and extremely durable. He stands on them, walks on them and a little of everything else, but they still hold up.This puzzle addresses two of his greatest thrills -- firefighters and puzzles!!How much better can it get!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Would Rather Play With A Real Truck
My 3 year old son is obsessed with fire trucks, and we got three of these as birthday presents at his fireman-themed birthday party. On the plus side, the pieces are very sturdy and the puzzle makes a nice gift (we've "re-gifted" our two extras). On the other hand, unlike other reviews here, I have to say that my son couldn't be less interested in playing with this puzzle. He'd much rather play with his real trucks, or dress up like a fireman and use a jump-rope as a makeshift fire hose.Maybe when he gets a little older it will be of more interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Enough For Two
Both of my kids (4 ½ and 22 Mos.)love fire trucks so this puzzle was a big hit.The large size (4 feet long) makes it a good size for use on a coffee table.t is also large enough that several kids can work on it without banging into each other.

The design is clear with strong colors and nice details (look for the dalmatian in the window). The pieces are durable for cardboard (my kids walk across the puzzle constantly and it has not been damaged).

My only fault with the puzzle is it is so popular I can never get it put away for more than a few minutes.Once taken apart, the kids want to put it together again. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good skates, but beware of sizing!
I bought these skates for my son who is not quite 5 and wears a size 10 shoe (sneaker and moc).He can BARELY get them on (largest setting) and when he does, the strap can not hold the tongue of the skate in place well. This is because the place where the strap is supposed to rest on the tongue is lower than the place where the strap attaches to the boot (when the skate is fully extended), so it has to dip down and come back up which makes it twist some and not lie flat.If the skate is on a smaller setting, the tongue comes up higher and the strap will lie flat.IMO these are both sizing problems...they look like good skates and he has fun with them, but frankly I'm not sure they are safe to stay on because of the strap, and will no longer fit at all when he gets his next pair of shoes.I would recommend them for younger kids, or those with small feet.I'm sure they'll work great for my daughter when she's old enough, but I really think they should be re-labeled for sizes 6-10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1st Skates!
The 'T' pattern wheels, 2 wide in back, offer stability while high speed for experienced will be like in-line!The adjustable feature will make them last years (if they last years!) so they should prove to be a terrific kids skate!

2-0 out of 5 stars wrong age info for this product!
These skates only fit up to a size 11 shoe (NOT size 12), so your child will outgrow them by the time he is 4 or 5, not 8!Tentative types will outgrow them before they learn to skate. ... Read more

    Grow To Pro Baseball

    Toy

    Editorial Review

Batter up! Kids will have a ball with this fun, versatile batting-practice machine. For the rookie, the T-ball mode is a perfect introduction. Seasoned players will find the "pop-up pitch" just right. The child (probably with help from an adult at first) loads the tee with the five provided balls, tilts the tee back until a ball loads, then steps lightly on one of the buttons on the base. The ball flies up, the child swings. Pressing the foot pedal on the base cues up another ball. Grow to Pro is well designed, easily portable, and comes with a plastic bat, five balls, tee, and base. Since the "pop-up pitch" is spring-loaded, there are no batteries to fuss with. All in all, a terrific outdoor game that will help beginning baseball players work on their home-run skills. --Elisa Murray ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating toy
My son loves this toy when it works. We also had the problem with the tee coming off, but had more of a problem with the foot pedal not staying down. This doesn't give the child time to get ready and hit the "go" button, the ball just pops right up.We got a free replacement from Fisher-Price the first time this happened, but we're having the same problem again.Possibly just over-use, since my son played it all the time. Now he doesn't want to play because it doesn't work right. We went out and bought the NEW Grow to Pro Baseball that also pitches and runs on batteries.Seems to be working really well.I'll gladly replace a few batteries if we don't have to get frustrated with the toy not working properly again.

We bought this for our daughters to practice tee ball. Now they did not use it nearly as rough as a boy would and it fell apart most of the time. Editorial Review

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.

The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.

This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bracketed by Good Parenting
Our story begins in Max's house, where Max is running wild. When he gets sassy with his Mom, he is sent to his room without his supper. In his room, his imagination transports him away.As the story builds, the pictures build, climaxing in three two-page, full-bleed illustrations depicting the wild rumpus of Max & his new friends.

Max's attention wanders back to thoughts of home, and the story retreats there, too.As the story pulls back, so do the illustrations, with the final words filling a page absent of drawings.

The monsters are cute without being cutesy, and Max's adventure is sandwiched between his mother's discipline and her tender gesture of love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooway for Woodney Rat
This book is about a little rodent named Woodney who is always teased and laughed at by his classmates. His classmates laugh at him because he doesn't know how to pernounce the letter r, instead he pernouces it like the letter w. But, then one day a new rodent arrives in to their class, her name was Camilla. She starts bulling all the other rodents, so now all the other rodents feel uncomfortable by it. Then one day they all go outside and play, the teacher tells Woodeny to be the leader of the game. Woodney did something that made Camilla go away forever, so now all the little rodents thank him.
I think that the book was great! It teaches you a great lesson. You shouldn't judge others by the way they are, or do something.

    Editorial Review

Just as A Bug's Life was a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, the funny and often enthralling Ice Age is a digital re-imagining of the Western Three Godfathers. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), and a duplicitous saber-toothed tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying, human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates need to establish trust among themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey, and pushy glaciers. Audiences that have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc.) will find the blunt edges and chilly brilliance of Ice Age--evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world--a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. Recommended for ages 4 and up. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SNOW GOOD!
From the very start, to the very end, this movie was great!
All the characters were interesting, and funny. A great
movie for the whole family to enjoy! A MUST SEE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to not laugh
This movie is a combined Monsters Inc and Shrek. But when there together,it's better. My favourite character is scrat. Sid is really funny and can get annoying to you,not just the movie. Let me tell you why it's combined.

Monseters Inc: Story line is almost identical.

Shrek: Characters are the same wierd way with same personality

Now I'm reading that pepole find this boring.... BORING,BORING
HOW COULD THIS BE BORING! My favorite scene is probulay when they
are going down the icy slide. The graphics are great as well. The storyline is about a sloth that runs into a grumpy mammoth and have a long adventure while getting away from an ice Age.
Now scrast is the reason I stay on the screen. At the end,he's thinking a coconut isan acorn so when he try's to bury it,he makes a volcano explode. He's in the movie to keep your eyes open. I strongly suggest that you get this movie. BUY IT NOW! OR RENT FOR FREAKIN SAKE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply WONDERFUL
An outstanding animated movie, Ice Age, brings to the screen the story of an unlikely group of prehistoric creatures that band together because of a human baby, with all the ups and downs that that entails!
It is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, friendship, and inner strength.
All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the animation does come ALIVE)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears! The film is simple enough, but does a great job of describing people's every day lives and the problems they face.It just goes to show that simplicity is often far better than complexity, when trying to present issues of a human nature.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the HUMOR (!!!) and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Ice Age is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!BRING ON THE SEQUEL!

    Blues Clue Game

    Editorial Review

You may know a preschooler who'd go blue in the face begging for this game starring the popular puppy from Nickelodeon. There's plenty to hold attention spans while moving around the board: children travel through Blue's rooms collecting clues, piecing together child-oriented concepts like making a Popsicle or building a snowman. But that's not all--there are activities, too. Land on the right space and you might find yourself winking, patting your tummy, or flexing a muscle. Blue's Clues Game is a good one for parents and little ones to play together. Clue cards, game board, spinner, playing pieces, and a notebook are included. True Blue fans will also enjoy Blue's Clues Floor Puzzle and Blue's Clues Colorforms Party Time Game. Blue's Clues Game is for two to four players. --Elizabeth Ward ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO MUCH WORK
I know it's a game but come on.. there are so many instructions and pieces. My daughter loves it but this game drives me crazy.. I haven't even seperated all the pieces because there are soo many. Plus the drawing part is a pain. I may be lazy about it but there are games out there that are just as fun with out the hassle. Quite disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the Show! They love it!
My kids and I play this game all the time. The game plays just like the show. The kids have to travel around the board that is designed to look just like the house. The graphics are great and look just like the cartoon version on TV.My kids GO NUTS traveling to each room, picking up clues. They cannot wait to get to the next room, so they can see what the clue is and write it in their notebook. We have played it so much, we made our own clues out of paper and the kids try to figure out things like "daddy's still sleeping" and "help daddy rake leaves"The kids get a kick out of what little jokes I will create. It's a fun game and a must have for any fan of Blue's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and grows with your child
I bought this for my son when he was only 2 and we still play it now that he's 4. He loves this game, and it doesn't ever become boring.

While playing, you may land on a square that makes you dance, wink or turn upside-down, among other fun antics that keep you from sitting too long. While going around the board, you collect clues and get to draw them in a notebook (not included with the game). After you collect three clues, you guess what Blue is thinking about. My son LOVES to act out the show in this way.

The organization of the game pieces could be better. There are many small cards to keep track of and you have to organize them in order to play a game. The game itself doesn't offer an easy way to store the cards or set up the game quickly.

The way the game is designed, you could easily personalize it by adding your own fun antics and even your own clues.
This game grows with the kids and is a lot of fun! ... Read more
