Tonka Toys are Tough!
This is a GREAT toy for a rough little boy which is exactly what we have here! My son received this for Christmas a year ago & it still looks great & works great! That is saying lots!! He can destroy a lot of toys quickly b/c he is all boy!! For example, he received a truck for his birthday a month ago which was supposed to be a good rugged truck well it has been pronounced dead & retired to the trash already after just a month, but not his Tonka toys! But then we always buy the metal ones for him! I dont think you can go wrong with this toy! We are actly buying him a few more in this same line for this Christmas b/c they are so rugged!

The best construction toys
After much research I'm back to the old steadfast Tonka for my 3 year old.

These are the best construction toys for kids. I gave it a 4 for the plastic parts. I still have my Tonka loader in perfect condition from 1970, it has a metal loader bucket and mechanism. Although you could argue that the plastic bucket might be more safe if it gets plowed into anything other than dirt or it won't get scraped up from digging and corrode if left out in the elements too often. I like all metal.

But these are still just great construction toys. The competitors use too much plastic in places where they'll actually break. They feel like they're going to fall apart unless sitting foreven on a shelf.

Kids will push anything to it's limit, at least smaller kids. So expect any flimsy plastic, realistic looking parts to get broken, unless it's building blocks or something like that.

There's a difference between hard plastic and softer plastic in terms of durability. Most of the competitor trucks feel like hard plastic. The harder plastic snaps frm fatigue. The bucket on the loader is a bit softer, it's more pliable so it shouldn't snap from moderate abuse

I'd also stay away from the Tonkas that look more realistic but are all plastic, a harder plastic, and battery operated. Although alittle more realistic looking, those aren't really made for digging or pushing or anything but pretending to dig on a carpet inside only. Perhaps for older kids who play more realistically than forcefully. I've seen some with all of their realistic brittle plastic loader parts just broked off where they attach from over use from preschoolers.

These look much more durable, and they are. My sons still look pretty darn good and they've seen much use.

Buy it
These are the BEST toys in the world for kids who love transportation.I got this on special with the free dump truck and they have been all over the house, yard and even went on display for show and tell in grade K.All the kids love it.

If this is on special with the free dump truck as it is several times then don't hesitate get two and save it for a birthday gift.Both girls and boys love 'em.Great buy. ... Read more

Built Strong for Hours of Play
We purchased the Tonka Mighty Backhoe and the Tonka Mighty Dump Truck for my son for Christmas this year.As a child, I had numerous Tonka trucks, and I can remember how much fun I had playing with them.Although plastic has replaced some of the parts that used to be steel, these trucks are still built strong for hours of fun play, either indoors or outdoors.As for the backhoe, it has a strongly-built cab and handles for the child to hold on to while operating the backhoe.This is an improvement from when I was a child.The backhoe bends in two places, so picking up small objects is very easy.The wheels are made of a sturdy plastic.I highly recommend this fun toy.Combine it with another Tonka vehicle to give your child hours of construction fun.

My 3 year old grandson loves favorite trucks
I bought the backhoe, dump truck and the back loader and recently purchase the crane for him.He takes them everywhere he goes. His father takes him to see the real ones at work and he know what each one is called.

A frustrating toy
My son loves all the Tonka vehicles, but this one frustrates him.The crane mechanism comes out of the slot easily.It also tips over easily.It doesn't balance very well when lifting something.It is also awkward to move and store due to the crane part.

A little disappointed
I am a big fan of the metal Tonka trucks. My son has the dump truck (which he loves) and the backhoe (which he also loves). I bought the crane thinking it would be a great addition to his backyard fleet. For the most part it is, however if your child is rough and tough like my 3 year old, you might encounter some problems. For one thing it kept tipping over when he would try to operate it and then the bucket came off and had to be retied on. He still plays with it but I was a little disappointed in Tonka on this one.

Choose the backhoe, front loader or dump truck instead...

The name Tonka means "big 'n' chunky" to many people, and this dump truck doesn't disappoint. Even the plastic chassis and front end are sturdy, and the tipping truck bed--itself nearly a foot long--is a solid slab of yellow steel. over aged tonka lover
i got it used and kinda rusty (...)it is stronger than nails i play in my garage with it & hall gravel in it its a good sizei over flow it with rocks & unhapply end up crashing it sometimes dosnt scratch this monsteri have had plastic trucks before they did not hold up very well i recomend it for all little kids your not 2 old for till u cant engoy it no more

Tonka Tough
It is a very durable toy.My boys (ages 3 & 5) have pushed each other around in it for a year or more. It has taken trips through the rock garden and weathered a few rain storms too. With a little care and cleaning it looks a great as the day we got it.Not to mention the hat is really neat!The tools last quite a long time for staying outside all year. Most other sand/dirt toys last a month and then crack and break into a million pieces.

Built Strong for Hours of Fun!
I remember when I was a child and I received a Tonka dump truck for Christmas.Now that I have my own son, I've carried on the tradition and purchased one for him.Tonka has always been known for their strong and durable toys, and this mighty dump truck keeps up the tradition.Although no longer completely made out of steel, the plastic is still stong and durable and holds up very well.The colors are bright and inviting, and the main parts (i.e. dumper and cab) are still made from steel.I highly recommend this excellent toy.I hope my son gets as much joy and fun from his new mighty dump truck as I did when I had mine. ... TERRIFIC TRAIN SET
I HAVE 2 BOYS (3 AND 4 YEARS OLD)AND THEY LOVE THESE SET. THEY PLAY WITH IT EVERYDAY. I BOUGHT A COUPLE OF THE SETS AND THEY HAVE A WHOLE CITY. I CHANGE IT AROUND SO THEY DON'T GET BORED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

I bought the whole set of Geo trax for my sons 3rd Birthday, and he hasn't stopped playing with it since. He gets this out every single day and plays with it. Very durable toys. I highly recommend this toy. A must have. My son loves to put the tracks together, and it is easy for him. My 2 year old daughter even loves to play with it. Now they have out the mile high sets, and my husband said we had to get him that too. This is a definate toy to buy......... It Lets the kids use their own imagination time and time again.

Great trucks, and a great value!
These trucks are the perfect size for my three year-old construction fanatic.The "mighty" Tonka trucks are too big for him, the "jr. basic" Tonka trucks are too small for him (though they were excellent for him in the sandbox a year ago), and the "jr. force" Tonka trucks are too flimsy for working in our tough Oklahoma dirt!These trucks have a steel body and plastic wheels and accents.The description does not contain their dimensions, so here they are...the grader is roughly 17Lx8Wx7H, and the dump truck is roughly 14Lx6Wx7H.The price is excellent, the quality is very good, and my son loves them!What a deal! ... Entertaining and Educational
My daughter got this for her 12 month old birthday and she loves it.She loves the song Old McDonald and wants to play it over and over again as she dances to it.The animals are great for her to learn the noises but mostly to identify the animal.I'll tell her to go get the horse and she'll come back with it!It also goes great with the Baby Einstein video Baby McDonald because they use that toy in it and she recognizes it and will go push the button to make the song.Our daughter loves it and has had it for 2 months now and has not gotten bored with it.

dangerous choking hazard
My son loved this toy also.HOWEVER, this morning as he was playing he started coughing.I looked over to find the small hand piece missing off the farmer.When initially examining the toy upon purchase all the pieces appeared safe for a toddler as the package indicated.Obviously that is not the case as one hand piece had come off completely.I plan to contact the manufactor, however I strongly caution anyone who chooses to purchase this toy.As fun as it may seem it is obviously a choking hazard.

Get this toy!
Not only did my 1 year old love this toy when he got it, (as did his big sister) but he has been riding around the house on it for over a year and it is still in good shape!He thinks the trailer is great for sitting on and pushes himself around on it. (And he weighs 25 pounds!)The mechanism for moving itself forward automatically finally gave out recently due to his misuse, but he doesn't seem to mind. Great truck!
My son got this truck as a Christmas present and he plays with it every day...he loves to look in the window and turn the crank that makes the mixer spin. He looks at the 'engine' and pushes it all over the house. He's 22 lbs. and sits on the mixer daily and it's still as good as new!

This toy is tops!
My son recieved it for his 2nd birthday and a year later still loves it. We keep it as an outside toy where he can dig and load dirt with it. Its nice and chunky for little hands and has a handle you push to make the loading part lift up. I imagine this toy will last forever.

Loads of Fun
My two boys(5 and 6) have both the loader and dump truck and they have put about 1,000 miles on tires and they keep going.They enjoy playing in the dirt with these toys..They are kept outside and have lasted along time(3 yrs)..Even when left out in the rain, they have kept together with no problems.

Little tikes diggers and trucks

Our toddler's favorite toy
We bought this truck for my son's first b-day. At first he just piled it with toys and dumped them out. He slowly figured out how much fun it was to hold onto the back and push it around the house. It's truly his favorite toy. His friends (up to age 4) also all love this truck. We're going out to buy another one because they all fight over it!

Our son is 19 months old and we've never had a problem with him getting hit in the head with the back of the truck the way other reviews have described. I'm not saying it's not possible to get hit. He just figured out quickly the correct way to push it and play with it.

This truck is plastic and seems indestructible. Because it's plastic, it's lightweight and easy to maunever around. We think it is a great truck for both toddlers and preschoolers.

wonderful toy,except!!
My son pcked this out at a local store.After a couple of weeks, the truck did not make the sound it was supposed to.I called little tikes and a check is on the way for a new one.My son loves this toy and makes the sound every time he sees.Little Tikes brands are the best made toys around!!!

Great for young and old
My son has this truc. It is very cute and durable. He's 2 but my nephews who are 12 and 15 love it too!! It links together easily and comes apart easily. Al so hooks to other trucks of the same style!! Excellent truck!

Great truck for rough boys!
I have two boys, 4 and 1 who equally love this truck!They have several in the series of "Rugged Riggz" and they are all great!They play very hard and rough and this toy withstands it all!The wheels are rubberized so they don't scratch my coffee table.You can take the trailer part apart and mix and match with the others in the series.A definite MUST have for those of you with boys and truck-lovers like me!!!

This is one serious piece of road construction equipment. On one end is a huge spinning blade, perfect for cutting up make-believe pavement. On the other side is a big steamroller and a mammoth rotating drill to bore holes in the road. Both are completely safe, of course. Use the switch on the bottom to set the rig to motorized mode, and let it rumble around the room in forward or reverse, or set it to "freewheeling" and let it sit still while you do the pushing. Great Boys Toy
Tonka is good at making fun/durable toys and Leapfrog educational toys; this is a great fun toy.This Road Constructer has been a great hit with my 2 boys (4years and 18mos), it's very durable and has strong effect-features (sparking cutting blade, rotating drill tool and sounds).This picky parent highly recommends this for fun time.

Not durable
My son got this tonka for christmas and it became one of his favorite toys. Thats until it broke! The rotating drill on ours broke right off. Now my 2 yr old hardly ever plays with it. They could have built the drill part better....oh well.

Pleased
I found this on clearance for my son. I can't really see paying full price for it. Especially with the quality of most expensive toys these days. But I have to say, Tonka does seem to be continuing their legacy of well built toys. My son loves it (even though the drill sparking and grinding kinda scared him at first). He loves flipping the switch and watching it beep it's way down the hall all by itself. Him and his friends have even used it ouside to dig holes! I couldn't believe the little plastic drill was actually putting holes in the ground, but it was. It got all sorts of dirt in crevices even I couldn't reach, but it did eventually "air out" and it still runs great. For anyone with a child who loves construction trucks, I strongly recommend Tonka. A Favorite!
My 2 1/2 year old LOVES FORKLIFTS, but toy forklifts are very hard to come by.We got this for him for christmas and he loves it so much, he's been sleeping with it every night!It isn't as durable as I'd like, but i explained to him how it was a special toy and he needs to play with it gently, and so far, it's held up nicely.

Bruder breaks 1st day & no refund
Last Christmas we purchased the forklift and 2 other vehicles by Bruder.One arrived with a broken piece and the other 2 broke the first day.I contacted Bruder by email a few days after Christmas.I was told that after 20 days, no returns were accepted.Since I ordered the gifts prior to Christmas, I was out of luck.They never responded any further to my complaints in the quality of their product.Die Cast vehicles have been much more durable.Not only were the products brittle, but moving mechanisms seemed made to crack off so that very quickly the primary function of all the machines was broke.

Fun, but not durable
My 3-year-old son was crazy about watching the fork lifts at Home Depot and was delighted to receive this as a big brother gift when our second child arrived.But alas, as other reviewers have mentioned, it is brittle.The basket was broken into many pieces after being stepped on.The up/down mechanism was too delicate.We still get it out for the second child now and then, but he is too frustrated about the broken parts. ... Bruder Toys
Our 3 1/2 year old loves all the Bruder trucks.They may be made out of plastic but, they are still very tuff.Our son sits on them without any problems.We love the detail of all of vehicles.It makes learning about heavy equipment fun.All of the vehicles have working parts and Bruder's attention to detail is unsurpassed.The small details adds intererst and play time longevity to the toys.Our son plays with them every day and knows the difference between quaility constructed toys and cheap toys.The wheels get pulled off of other brand trucks and put into the dump truck bed of the Brueder.Brueder is the only brand that we will buy!These are not flawed third world country plastic toys.All parts are made and assembled in Germany!The cement mixer is next on his wish list.

High Quality Plastic . . .Not Exactly
Purchased this for a 3 1/2 year old boy.Was hesitant about buying any large, plastic truck, but we did not see any alternatives at the time we purchased this.We should have stuck with our instinct.When it arrived, we were immediately struck by the fact that the plastic seemed flimsy, and that many small plastic pieces that are attached to the grader appeared and felt so cheap and flimsy that we doubted they would survive 5 minutes of play, in our humble opinion.We were not going to wait to find out, and we decided to send this back.You can get a STEEL Tonka 18" grader off of ebay for less than what Amazon is asking for this plastic thing.That's exactly what we did.Good luck! ... a wonderful time
I bought this truck for my 2-year-old grandson, but the older ones loved it, too, so I ordered 2 more. The three boys played for hours with this truck.I can't wait to see what they do with three of them.

Piece of Junk
My 3 yr old son received this toy last year for Christmas and was so excited. In less than a week, one of the rear wheels cracked in half, rendering it a non-returnable piece of junk.

My 2 year old daughter loves this truck. She pushes it around the house, pushes it down the Fisher Price garage ramp. Love it. Great toy.

My son is 1 and LOVES trucks. He just got this one for his birthday. We love the Little People and this one is very cute. My son loves to push it around and he likes to throw the "rocks" that come with it around the room! He doesn't know how to push down the man to hear the noises, but he likes it when I do it. Girls like trucks too!
My daughter got this from her nephew who is 2 years older than her. He loved it, and now she does as well. It's red color has faded some from outside use, but my daughter loves to crawl around with it and putting stuff into the dumptruck bed! Durable and great toys that spark your child's imagination! What parent could ask for anything better!

Great toy
This is my son's favorite toy.He has tons of trains, cars, etc.and this is by far the one he plays with the most.He is fifteen months and he received it as a gift for his 1st birthday.It is small enough for him to handle but big enough that I don't have to worry about him chocking on little pieces.It is definitely with the money.

Dumpety is great for kids, but loud for parents
My son loves this toy, however it is loud.But don't let that be a deterant for you.It's really cute.A word of advice though...the boulders are small enough to be put into little one's mouth's and they look a bit like a Dunkin' Donut munchkin.So as a parent who's been there, keep an eye on those boulders!!But overall my son who's going to be 2 has enjoyed this toy since December.And it's the first one out of the toybox! ...
