Editorial Review

A train you can ride on? That moves by itself? It's hard to imagine any child not being excited by this prospect. The Santa Fe Train offers an amusement park experience in your own house. Assembly is a snap, literally. The track pieces click together with no problem, and it's so obvious how to assemble the train, you almost don't need the manual. If you feel prepared to take it on, this train set can make for a spectacular birthday or holiday present. In the interests of instant gratification, however, be sure to charge up the battery the night before. Some other considerations for parents: This toy takes up a lot of space: at a bare minimum, 12 square feet. It may have limited replay value, since you can go around and around a track only so many times, even if you are 4 years old. And it requires a bit of maintenance in that you must keep the battery charged up. --David Stoesz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps him Safe and Busy
My son received this when he was 18 mos for X-Mas.He is 2 now and still rides it nearly every day. This is one of his favorites and it keeps him busy 10-15 minutes at a time, a few times a day.You have to wipe/dust the tracks off a few times a week. The dust prevents the train from gliding on the tracks smoothly.I have had NO problems with it jumping the track.I have another one on the way and I expect this will be in great condition for him as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
When we were given this as a toy I was doubtful it would have a big place in our house. I really aim for toys that encourage creative play, exploration of the world, that are not loud. This train, I was expecting would not do this. Was I wrong?!

This is a fun toy and very exciting. We have had it for several years now and my children still play on it. They can use it without the track which only makes it that much more fun.

It is fairly easy to steer and has not broken down yet. It is sturdy and has lasted through three children playing with it. It really does lend to creative play- my children have pretended they are delivering mail, visiting family, and so on.

Much fun. Throw in a few fun books such as Mailing May and this would be an excellent toy to encourage creativity, find and large motor control, and many more skills.

Enjoy. Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun but a little tippy
We bought this train for our son Christmas 2003 when he was 1 1/2. He loved it and still does but I agree with others that the extra car tends to derail alot. Also, if he leans over on it then it will all come off the track. It doesn't hurt or scare him. We have begun to teach him how to put it on the track by himself. Overall, he gets alot of enjoyment from this train. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Puzzle for Little Ones
My 28 month old son got this puzzle for Christmas and loves it.He put it together the first time out of the box himself. It is the first thing he does every morning and then several times a day.My almost 5 year old likes it too. It is not as sturdy as the Melissa & Doug floor puzzles, but it still really sturdy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice picture making for an easier puzzle
My 2 year old daughter has this puzzle and thinks its wonderful.

Unlike many puzzles, with just one character on it, the picture is brilliant having lots of different trains, etc on it.It is easy to fit togehter, with parts of a different character or scene on every piece. She can easily put Thomas, the sheds, Harold, etc together thus eventually making the whole puzzle.

This is by far her favourite puzzle. For one, it's Thomas! And for 2, it's well-made and 'easy' to work out how to put together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Beloved Toy
My son who just turned 4 years old in December received this for Christmas.I'm amazed at the beauty and durability of the pieces. He put it together about three times (with help) the first time we opened it!I never seen him so excited about a toy and to my greater surprise--a puzzle! Each time he placed a new piece in (sometimes with my assistance and sometimes not), he'd ask me to turn around and then ask me to look. When I looked I praised him for his accomplishment and he squealed with excitement. He literally jumped up and down almost after each piece was placed! He told me this was his favorite gift for Christmas and believe me he had quite a few more that were more expensive.I'll be buying more Thomas puzzles from this company in the near future as I'm very impressed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well-made product
A sturdy and well-made puzzle. My twin girls are a little late in developing fine motor skills, so this was a great choice for them. It's a BIG puzzle and the individual pieces are large enough that they're hard to lose. They're well-finished enough that it seems safe to let the little ones chew on them. The variety of shapes and images underneath are nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Developmental Activity for Little Ones!
I purchased the Jumbo Knob Puzzle: Shapes for my son's 1st birthday. It was too difficult at first, but he quickly grew into it.We'd work it together, and I'm still amazed how much he'd retain the next time we would attempt to put it together.I like that we could work on shapes, colors, matching, and developmental skills in the same toy.Additionally, the jumbo knobs are easy to work, and the pieces don't have to go in with the label upright. This is especially helpful when placing the octagon, and the pentagon pieces.William was fond of this puzzle, and it's held up extremely well.He finally allowed me to put it in the closet with the rest of his baby toys, and he's almost 4-years old.

There are pictures underneath, but not the pictures of the shape. This toy requires a bit more thinking than the typical "pictures under the pieces" puzzle. The pictures are animated objects that reflect everyday life, such as, a clock, a house, and a school bus.The pieces are very chunky for little hands, and have large jumbo knobs. My only gripe is with some of the picture selections. The diamond picture is a close-up of a diamond window. My son didn't know what it was, and when I asked him today he said, "I guess it's a diamond, mom."Perhaps, a better choice would be a kite.At any rate, the puzzle makes an excellent activity for young children. I definitely recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars too expensive
this puzzle costs entirely too much for what it offers. you can get the same quality puzzle for $15.00 less at a local store. It held my 2 year old's attention for about 5 minutes and that was it. B-O-R-I-N-G. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the first steps in learning to read is being able torecognize and label symbols. While your baby may not be naming theentire alphabet by the time he's 1 year old, this interlocking setcertainly offers a firm foundation for future reading. Each12-by-12-inch piece contains an easy-to-grasp, pullout letter of thealphabet; there are 50 pieces in all. Parents may need to help youngtoddlers with assembling the floor mat, since it requires more detailedpuzzle-fitting skills. But children as young as 1 year old can learn tofit the letters into the slots by themselves. This also makes acomfortable tumbling mat or a nicely cushioned play area. The set comesin a clear vinyl storage case with a zip closure. --HannahReynolds ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent toy!
I have a 21 month old son who loves this mat!It keeps him busy long enough for me to get things done around the house!I recommend this to anyone with a busy body child!

5-0 out of 5 stars All For Fun
I love this mat! I got this for my 9 month old daughter and she immediately took to it. She loved the vibrant colors and the fact that she can pull out the letters, within a couple of days she found out that she could pull the whole mat appart (a lot of work for the parent...but all comepletely worth it). Friends have pulled it appart and have used it as a hop-scotch board and built things out of it. The foam is a little flimsy though, so I would recomend watching children when they are teething and figuring out the capabilities of their teeth. But over all I love this and have recomended it to many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have hardwood floors, buy this
We have hardwood floors, which are nice, but when you have a baby who wants to be on the floor, it's hard on everyone. So, we went out and bought this. It's much better than the floor, but it's not carpeting. They're pretty durable - my son has taken all of the letters and the numbers out and put them back and they don't seem to be very worn yet!(He's 18 months and we've had it for at least 12 months.)For a long time, that was one of the things he enjoyed doing the most, taking the letters out, walking around with them, and chewing on them.He would also put them back in later, but not as often as he would take them out.I didn't really worry much about the small pieces - the small circles for the inside of the eight, six, zero, b's, etc - since we're with him when he plays with this. But if you are, you can simply take them out and put them away for later.Of course, that means that your child will be able to pull out the letters and numbers more easily, but that's part of the fun. (Little ones have a hard time getting much of a gripe on the letters and numbers when they're pushed flush with the blocks.)Also, I think that it's nice to have the alphabet out and some numbers. My one complaint is that the one we got, when it's put together has six vertical stripes through all the letters, but then the numbers don't continue it.I guess I wish ours was more random, which some are. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but kind of cheaply made
My boys are 3.5 years and 18 months. Theylove these puzzles and never get tired of them. My only complaint is that they are rather cheaply made. The paper peels up and I've had to glue it down on the actual puzzle board as well as the puzzle pieces themselves. Other than that, they take a lot of wear and tear and have held up OK so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well made toy
I am impressed with the way these puzzles were made.I was looking for wooden puzzels and these have painted on pictures, not decals.I am not worried about my daughter ruining them.I am a little disappointed as others have said with certain aspects.I didn't read the reviews before I bought this one.I will be more careful next time. I just bought it for the good price. One puzzle does not have pegs.None of mine have the pictures under the pieces, only the words. My daughter doesn't mind as she can't read; however, I think that the pictures would better facilitate her learning and the pegs would make it easier to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Toy
I bought this toy for my 2 year old daughter and she just loved all four puzzles. These puzzles also served a valuable purpose in that my daughter thought she was playing, but she was actually learning the different animals, foods, transportations, and so forth. She has never got bored with these puzzles . . . and these were all she had!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Made Puzzle
The quality of this puzzle is outstanding! The wood is thicker than most puzzles and the sturdy knobs and high-quality finish will make this last for many years. The farm theme appeals to my daughter and she enjoys playing with this.Pictures underneath the puzzle pieces make it easier for little ones to complete.I highly recommend this puzzle.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this puzzle
My son received this for his 1st birthday and loves it.It has been a great teaching tool too.I ask him where is the duck and he picks up the duck piece, he is even getting pretty good at putting the pieces back in place - in only a month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heirloom Quality Puzzle
Lights, Camera, Interaction! makes beautiful products and this puzzle is no exception. The wood makes it durable and attractive, the pictures under the pieces make it appropriate for babies as young as 12 months, and the knobs are easy for small hands to manage. The pieces are cut to fit perfectly, so that they slide into place easily once the child has aligned it correctly.

My 12 month old baby is beginning to enjoy this, and my three year old still plays with it too.I can't recommend the toys and puzzles made by this company, also known as Melissa and Doug, highly enough. They are all excellent quality and provide fun learning opportunities for kids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a 2 year old!
My soon to be 2 year old son is obsessed with shapes and had outgrown the basic shape puzzle (the large knob puzzle by melissa and doug) and I was looking for a puzzle that went beyond that but was not too difficult. I was thrilled to find this! It looks and feels great too. My son really enjoys it and I think it is conceptually very well put together. Not only are the puzzles well within his reach but he also enjoys free play with the shapes. He recently discovered that 2 triangles can make a square and two rectangles can make a square too :) That was only possible because the shapes are thoughtfully proportioned as such. I do agree with the other viewer who said that this puzzle is not for a 5 year old. My son is not yet 2 and he can do them. If it wasn't for the sharp edges of the shapes I would say its for 18+ months - 3 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars great toy, but not for a 5 year old
we have had this toy for quite awhile now and my son (2 and 1/2 years) has loved playing with it.it helps with manual dexterity, shape and color recognition and creative thinking.....my son is now a bit bored with just putting the shapes in the correct spots (too easy now) BUT, the shapes are great to be used on their own to make an infinite number of shapes and creations.i really can't imagine a 4 or 5 year old finding the "puzzles" terribly difficult or interesting, but for a toddler it's wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Pattern Blocks
Nice bright, simple patterns for my 2½ yr old to follow, and the cutout of shape makes it easy to place the thick wooden pieces. We're teaching her shapes and color recognition and this is a great teaching tool, and she really feels proud when she finishes each one (there's a pattern on each side of the wood board.)She even helps clean up afterward, made easy with the wood storage box. Can't say enough about the educational value and great quality of this set.I think we have just about all of Melissa & Doug's products! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Puzzle!!!
Definitely a must buy!!!!My two year old learned her right hand from her left hand by using this puzzle. Not only does she understand the concept of counting from 1 to 10, but she also understands that each finger on each hand is different from the other. This puzzle teaches spacial concepts, counting, colors, and coordination.I wish there were more puzzles like this one. If anyone knows of any, please contact me through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for persistent little ones!!!
My little girl received this puzzle along with two other ones on her second birthday. I thought it would be a little too advanced for her but it turned out to be her favorite one!She showed me that with persistence little hands can achieve great things. She is two and half now and she still loves this puzzle, whether it is to count the objects on each finger or to learn the names of the fingers it keeps her busy each time she picks it up. ... Editorial Review

With all the high-tech electronic toys available for kids today, it would seem that the basics would be long forgotten. However, often the classic toys are the ones children want to play with the most. This classic block set includes 50 solid wood 1-inch-square blocks that are ideal for stacking or building. Two sides of each block feature carved letters or numbers in bright primary colors for teaching the alphabet or counting during play. The other four sides feature stamped letters, numbers, or pictures for additional practice in identification. Blocks come in a hard plastic storage case with a cord handle for easily transporting to Grandma’s house. This block set will most likely become the most used toy in the playroom. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These are the good kind
All alphabet blocks are good, but these are much better than the Imaginarium brand ones. The MYKIDS brand blocks are good too, but the color contrast is better on these. The most crucial characteristic is that a block has different letters on opposite sides, so you have at least two of each letter. There are a lot of words you can't spell when you only have one of most letters, and even if you have enough sets of blocks to compensate, it's still unnecessarily many blocks to look through. And if you aren't spelling words yet, there's still the same-versus-different play, which is sabotaged when you don't have any same. Then there's the spatial-skills aspect: if you turn the H block one way you get the 8, another way you get the U, and so on.These have it right on all criteria.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Classic
I love these blocks and they are actually going to be a decorating peice for our baby's room as well.I don't understand the complaints about how the pictures don't correspond. They never have. This set of blocks is the same as it always has been.If you want the letter to correspond buy some flash cards.I can't wait to play with these with my baby.

1-0 out of 5 stars Toxic
I bought these blocks for my child. She licked them and the colors came off. I think they should develop a saliva-proof coloring for their blocks. Also, the licking caused my child to be mocked in kindergarden due to the strange colors of her tongue. This tramatic experience has left her and our family scarred for life. I hate blocks. I'll buy more tomorrow. Good bye. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Single Wire Puzzle Rack
I bought this item for my 2 year granddaughter last week. This rack works so well for those hard to store/stack wooden puzzles. My daugther "in-law" took one look at how nice the puzzles were stored in this rack, that she suggested that Nana get Jolene one for Christmas to have at home. I plan to do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for homes and classrooms!
As a teacher and a parent, I highly recommend this item. It's perfect for the classroom because it doesn't take up a ton of space, yet it holds twelve puzzles. It's also pretty inexpensive for a storage case, not to mention that the class actually likes to put the puzzles away with this case!

I'm buying one for my house, as well. It has tipped ends that won't scratch my hardwoods, which makes my husband happy, and it means that I can buy a couple of more puzzles because they store so easily, and more puzzles, of course, please my children. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wiggles Obsessed Toddler
My son is just 3 and loves the Wiggles, their music and to dance. This toy lets him have it all and what I really like is that it is easy to fold up and take with you. We had his friends over and they all sang and danced around our deck with the mat. I think it is a fun toy that is not too costly and seems fairly durable. However, if you are looking for educational value, this toy has none.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Dancing for your kids!
I know that pepole have said that it is frusterating that the songs change as the kids move on the mat but that' s part of the fun of it. Most of the reviewers had children under the age of 2. If you read the box (and on Amazon near the picture), the age range of this toy is 2 & up and Amazon even says 4-7. You need to stay within your child's abilities and not buy them toys that are too advanced for their ages.
I have 2 kids, DD 5 and DS 2. We got this when DS turned 2 and it's been great. It teaches him who the characters are, colors, etc. I can tell him to step on a certain character and he does. He can turn it on and off by himself and really enjoys it. My daughter does too even though she is beginning to et out of The Wiggles.
All in all, it's a fun toy to jump around and get some energy out on!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Frustrating For A Little One
My 16 month old daughter received this mat as a gift. I have to agree with several of the previous reviewers about this toy. She can't dance ON the mat, she has to be taken OFF of the mat because as she moves about, a new song starts. It is very frustrating for her, and for us to watch her trying so hard to play with the mat. It should have been made differently. I too had to put clear tape over the speaker....MUCH too loud for a little ones ears. Not to mention annoying for parents as the same song starts over, and over, and over.....My advice is buy another Wiggles themed toy for your Wiggles fan! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Farm Puzzle isn't as great as it seems
I got this puzzle for my baby as a Christmas gift.Within the first few days, the puzzle pieces started to warp. Now the pieces are in two or three separate layers and don't even fit the spaces.I don't have the information on the company I got it from except for the name or I'd be getting my money back or getting it replaced. Now my baby wants to bite on the wood pieces. Not good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Melissa & Doug puzzles!!
I have not been dissappointed with ANY of Melissa & Doug puzzle...we have 7 now. This is the first for our youngest and I look forward to playing with the fuzzy farm pieces with him.A durable, safe edged puzzle that is colorful but not scary for little ones.My hat is off to Melissa & Doug once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute puzzle to learn with
Our son received this as a gift for Easter this past year.He isn't much on puzzles but this one really caught on.He likes the fuzzy animals I think the best, but he has become quite good at putting them in their proper places. It's also been a good tool to teach him the animals and to *nicely* pet the animals. His favorite is the little duck as it ends up in is crib quite often.Very cute puzzle with the extra added bonus of the peices being soft.Puzzle and pieces are made of wood (except the fuzzy coats) so it holds up well and the price is reasonable. ... The Goodnight Moon Game is a collection of six matching and memory skill-building activities of gradually increasing difficulty featuring charming illustrations from the children's book classic. At the beginner's level, children match cards to identical images on the game board. They then graduate to games involving memory skills, while also matching images that are similar but not identical. Once you've matched and memorized to your child's content, cuddle up together to read Goodnight Moon. No reading is required to play the games. Includes four playing boards, 24 matching cards, and the rules. Winner of the Parents' Choice Gold Award and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Best Toy Award. 5-0 out of 5 stars 2.5 year old loves it!
My daughter loved the book as a baby, and she loves the game now. She enjoys I-Spy books and the card game as well. Finding and matching images is a lot of fun for her. The fact that this ties into the book makes this even more fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars great game
we've had this game since my son was 18 months - and we're still playing with it at almost 3. it's basically a memory game, but you can play it competitively, or not, with colors, or with black and white. if you love the book, this is a nice addition. the only problem is the cards - with a toddler, it's kind of hard to keep them on the table together, much less in the right "spots". but if your kid is kind of orderly, this is a great game to play with them. ... Friendly farm animals surround the barn and tractor in this handcraftedwooden puzzle. This is a terrific puzzle for the very young--it is made of sturdy wood, and each of the nine pieces features a grip knob to help maneuver the pieces into place. Each piece is approximately 1.5 by 3 inches and fits easily into its own hole; the identicalpicture in the hole makes finding "where it goes" easy. The farm animals pictured includea duck with chicks, a sheep, a horse, a cow, a rooster with hen and chicks, a pig withpiglets, and a goat. --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first puzzle for 1-2 year-olds
This 9-piece puzzle was the most popular first puzzle with both my son and daughter, starting around 18 months. First, it's a high-quality puzzle. The art is detailed and realistic (while still being appealing to young children), and the construction is durable (i.e., children can step on it and not break or bend it). Second, the pegs make it accessible to younger children and allow them to practice their pincher skills. The pegs reduce frustration because it's easier to hold on to them and rotate them into the proper direction. Third, and most importantly, the puzzle has animal pictures behind each of the puzzle pieces. The animal pictures made the puzzle fun when the kids first used it; they would get excited to reveal the animal and quickly developed favorites. Later, the animals turned the puzzle into a memory game as we asked "where's the horse". Then, we increased the complexity by asking more indirect questions like "where's the animal that has puppies". I highly recommend this puzzle as a first puzzle for any child between the ages of 1 and 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Puzzle We Own
My son got this for his 1st birthday. He took right to it, seeing all the animals he was learning about. Now, he is 3 1/2 and loves it all the same, except he knows how to put the pieces in all by himself.Sometimes to keep it exciting we race puzzles to see who can finish their's first.Even through all the use, this puzzle looks brand new! It's Great!

So many children's games require an adult to help out or setthings up. Not this one. The Snail's Pace Race is a simple game thatproceeds at a child's pace. Everything is based on colors, including thedice, without a printed word in sight. Players roll the dice to seewhich two of the colorful wooden snails they'll move forward one spaceon the board. No matter how many children play, all six snails enter therace. The goal is to guess which snail will be the first--or thelast--to cross the finish line. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for little ones
my son does not yet understand the "choosing a color" and sticking to that same color throughout the game thing.this is a great game that teaches him to take turns without getting frustrated that he can't be the same color as momma. We love it!It is a great introduction to more sophisticated board games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snail's Pace Race Game is perfect!!
I love this game!!My son has been playing it for 2 years now. He's 4.5 yrs old right now. It's so easy to learn and great fun for up to 6 people!!We make it a little more challenging by taking two colored snails each and trying to remember which are ours when the colors are rolled. For our family of 3, that makes it lots of fun!I advise everyone to buy this game if there are young children in your house. You will NOT be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful first board game!
We bought this game for our son when he was barely 3 years old.He is now almost 6 and still loves it.The game is simple enough for him to play with his friends without adult help, since everything is based on colors and no reading is required. The beauty of this game, though, is that children can have fun without competing against each other.Since all children move all of the snails, it is the snails who race and who win or lose.Since no child loses, there are no hurt feelings.Plus, it's fun to try to guess which snail will win! ... Baby animals from foals to fish are the stars of this wooden pegpuzzle. Each baby animal can be lifted out of the natural wood frameusing a small red peg embedded in each puzzle piece. The same laminatedpictures that appear on the pieces are illustrated on the puzzle board, making it easy for younger preschoolers to match the animal pairs. Thepuzzle has rounded edges and the pieces are smoothly sanded. Becausethis high-quality toy is made to last, several generations of childrenwill enjoy playing with it. --Marcie Bovetz ... Read more
