5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!
My son absolutely loves his "animals". He can sit and play with the book for awhile. He's 20 months old and knows where each picture belongs. It was a great gift and I recommend it! I do agree with the other reviews regarding the dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun and she's learning too.
My 18 month old daughter over the past two months really started to love animals.Seeing this item, I just couldn't past up the chance. She loves pulling the animals out of the pages, walking around with them and making the sounds they would make.Hasn't quiet grasped the concept of putting them back where they belong but that's were I come in to try to teach her.I lay out all the pieces and ask her, "Where is the zebra?"If she doesn't know, I'll pick it up and tell her then I put it back into it's rightful slot.Eventually, she'll know all the animals so we'll make a different game out of it.I'm guessing that in several months, she'll know where each animal goes and to put them back so they will fit.

I highly recommend this product.I do agree with the previous review about including forest animals instead of the dinos. But it still rates 5 stars for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for my 2 year old
Our 2 year old little boy enjoys finding the pages that the animals go on.I get him to point to the animal I say, and make up other games with them as well.He can play with this for a long time, as he is obsessed with puzzles these days.My only beef is the paper on the magnets show wear over time. Also, I wish the dinosaur page was forest animals instead (deer, bears, foxes, etc), however, older children do seem to enjoy dinosaurs. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This 8.5-by-12-inch natural wood puzzle has a laminated pictureof a fully rigged fire truck, along with a faithful dalmatian, waitingfor the next alarm. There are nine large puzzle pieces in this set, eachwith an attached red peg to make it easier for little hands to lift thepieces out of the frame. The same picture that is on the pieces isillustrated on the board, making it easy for little ones to match pieceswhen reassembling the puzzle. The puzzle pieces can also be reassembledoutside the frame. --Marcie Bovetz ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mom of Twins
I got the fire truck puzzle for my 20 month old twin boys, who love all types of vehicles, especially emergency vehicles, and have "graduated" from the single shape peg puzzles. They loved the fire truck, but required assistance to put it all together. My criticism is that the fire truck puzzle pieces could be cut according to parts of the fire truck, such as wheels, window, etc, which would also conceptually teach the parts of a vehicle and make putting the puzzle back together more logical/easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent transitional puzzle
This is a wonderful wood puzzle for the toddler who finds the baby wood puzzles too easy but who doesn't quite have the dexterity (or patience) to fit together classic puzzle shaped pieces.Because it is all wood, it can stand up to the wear and tear of a toddler. My son (20 months) found this hard at first, but was thrilled to have the challenge and would not stop working on it for days until he could do it easily. The picture is underneath the pieces. The is one of my son's very favorite toys of all time! He also loves the school bus one that is similar by the same company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Survived Destruct-o boy!
Soon after my sons 2nd birthday, I searched for puzzles that would challenge him more than the 1-piece, 1-hole type. What I found was stimulating for my little guy, and it gave us countless hours of one of one time together. The "Fire Truck Peg Puzzle" is different from other peg puzzles that have one piece per opening. This puzzle has one large opening, and no separations. The puzzle encourages young children to think, yet at the same time have fun, because it includes the same picture beneath the pieces. It requires more concentration than the stage-1 type of puzzle, and it was exactly what William needed.

I found this age group learns, and retain more information from realistic pictures, or photographs of everyday things, rather than animated illustrations. The manufacturer of this toy understands that, and although the Fire Truck is a rendered drawing, it closely resembles its real-life counterpart. The puzzle is designed well.By that, I mean the division of the pieces is perfectly presented. In addition, each piece includes a red peg so the puzzle is easy to work.

William has enjoyed this puzzle from the time I eyed it in the store. In fact, he's not ready to give it up, and why should he.He turns 3 next month, so he's had 8 good months with the "Fire Truck Peg Puzzle" and will probably continue to "work it" a while longer. It's held up well considering my sons destruct-o moods, and will probably carry on for the next generation's play and abuse. 2-years and up.

Happy Playing,

Mary ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Melissa & Doug should have thought on this a bit more
While we have several of these wooden puzzles, this appears to be the one they didn't think through. It's a wonderfully constructed book but easily dismantled. My 2 year old can remove all the magnetic pieces but rarely puts them back. And like another reviewer it must be used under complete supervision.Unlike the "noisy" puzzles that my son will not leave alone. They are wonderful toys but this one really should have some improvement to it since the age range is really wrong for it.I love it, don't get me wrong but it does need some re-thinking since it is a product that young children can take apart and with small pieces there is a choking hazard.Or at least a chance that they will get stuffed into little mouths unless properly supervised.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not Practical!
Although I love the concept of this book, I have found that it isn't very practical. It's a book that needs to be used under supervision and stored somewhere out of reach. The little magnets end up all over the house and the book isn't interesting enough or engaging enough to be worth the trouble. The magnets fit like a puzzle into their own particular places; they don't allow for creative play like other magnetic books. The pictures aren't particularly cute and I would describe this as a run-of-the-mill alphabet book.

5-0 out of 5 stars hours of independant play
My daughter loves this book so much.It is made so much better than a lot of wooden toys that fall apart at the edges.I do recomend that your child be over their "everything in the mouth" phase as the pictures on the pieces will wear off easily. Also, I wish this book had a simple latch to keep it shut without the pieces falling out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Puzzle Rack for All Those Peg Puzzles
I originally purchased the wire puzzle rack by Melissa and Doug only to discover it didn't work for my toddler's peg puzzles. Then I found this racks. It is perfect!!!We love this puzzle rack for the following reasons.

1.It is one of the only racks on the market that will hold peg puzzles with the small pegs.

2.It hold twelve puzzle - more than your toddler will ever need.

3.It also works for traditional wood puzzles so as your child switches from one type to puzzle to another, your puzzle rack doesn't become obsolete.

4.It is sturdy and holds up to daily use by my active (and rough) toddler boy.

5.It is easy for toddler to remove and replace puzzles on his or her own.Especially nice if your toddler is in the "me do" stage of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it
I hated to pay $30 for an empty puzzle case - I wished I'd just bought a "loaded" case for almost the same price. But we already had a variety of puzzles that we like, so I bought this (in natural). It's worth it. It is lovely and very well made. It fits all kinds of puzzles - even our huge oversized ones which I never expected to fit. It's much easier for our 21-month-old to access her puzzles and she's using them more!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating Blocks
My 9 month old loves these blocks. We bought them for her when she was 5 months old. All she did then was put them in her mouth. I had to supervise her when she played with them as she could hurt herself. Now she looks intently at the pictures on the blocks, enjoys knocking them down when we stack them up and enjoys the wooden sound they make when she knocks two blocks. These blocks are her all time favorite. I anticipate further use of these blocks for educational purpose and I highly recommend them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Blocks for Building and Learning
My daughter is almost 2. She has had these blocks for several months, and enjoys playing with them, stacking them, throwing them, and trying to name the pictures. So far the dog isn't attracted to them.

These blocks have great pictures and clear letters. I agree, however, with another reviewer's comments regarding M/W and some of the word choices, but in general they are great. So, we'll just have to explain somehow what Ink is. I'll bet we can do it.

I particularly like that the block holding tray is durable, and that the dimensions of the box allow for extra room (2 blocks worth) to make re-packing easy.

The blocks are a nice size, and the size and shape remain consistent between the blocks for easy stacking.I have not found any rough edges or splinters. So far the pictures have held up well.

These are high quality blocks that should be a satisfying toy for several years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Safe Block Set
We bought these toys when our daughter was 10months old, for her first christmas. She just loves them. She also recieved some of the old-fashioned "carved" blocks with the letters cut into them.Unlike these, she quickly chewed the paint off of some of the old-fashoined blocks. She has chomped on these pretty hard and they seem to put up with it with little damage. She bangs them together, chews on them and occationally stacks them. Though they are recommended for older children, i think we made a nice choice as she will be able to play with these for years in many different ways as her skills develop. Also, they are bigger than the standard blocks, so i dont worry about anything and she should be able to manipulate them a little earlier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Besttoy ever to learn ABCs
I bought this puzzle for my son when he was 2 and half. Although it takes more time for them to complete, this is the best toy to learn upper and lower case. My son learnt it immediately and now he is 3 yrs and keeps spelling all the letters in his little books, even spells the names of grocery stores.
Without this toy I wouldn't have taught him. This is one toy you can buy it without 2nd thought. It is very sturdy and no sharp edges. Even though some lower case letters look similar, it's not difficult for little ones to make out the differences. The letters i and l are very small, so, keep an eye on little children not to put in their mouth. But don't avoid buying it and teaching them.
After seeing this puzzle, many of my friends bought this for their children too and all are satisfied. no regrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
I got this back when my son was only about 9 months old to supplement my home-made flashcards & the educational videos. I didn't take out the plastic at that time since I know he'd just eat them. I just let him point out the letters besides the alpha blocks that he's also learning from. To make a long story short, my son's mastered the alphabet at 14 months old (& to think he was 5 wks preemie when he was born) both the upper and lower case letters and all the letter sounds. Now at 18 months, he's reading the words that he used to know by recognition only.He can actually read now and builds the words using the letters on this puzzle.I'd say it's worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool for letter recognition
This is quite inexpensive for all you get. I love that this is a combination of upper and lower case letters.

This puzzle can be made the traditional way or it can be used as a moveable alphabet. A moveable alphabet is a name for little letters that kids can manipulate on their own. Moveable alphabets are used in Montessori schools and other schools. After buying an expensive moveable alphabet of only lowercase letters (that is all that is available from that other manufacturer) I realized I could have bought multiple sets of this puzzle and use them in the same way. A moveable alphabet is used in freeform activities with your child to teach letter recognition. It is a tactile exercise as the child is holding the letter and moving it, rather than it being a little mark of ink on a page. You or the child can also form words with the letters and sound them out and read them as a way to supplement teaching reading. (Multiple puzzles would be needed so that there are more than one letter each.) My children hold up the letters and ask me which it is and we play games like that, that either they or I invent.

This puzzle is very durable as are all the other wood puzzles from this company.

The only downside is that organization is key if you want to not lose any of the pieces. This is too large for the puzzle holder that this company sells. Also beware the L's and I's are quite small and definately are choking hazard sized..so if you have little ones, take care to keep this out of their reach.

I think this is an inexpensive learning tool that every child should own. Please buy this for your child or give it as a gift to other children.

The puzzle doesn't have fancy graphics or bells and whistles to entertain. Games could be made up by the parent working alongside the child to make this interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars greattoy, but forget the picture boards
I bought this toy because my children loved to play with pattern blocks at science and art museums. This was the only toy I found with real wood blocks that were the size and feel of the toys they had played with earlier.Using the blocks alone, my children loved to create an endless number of beautiful geometric patterns. The toy encourages creativity and promotes mathematical thinking.

My daughter, who was five or six at the time, tried using the picture boards. At her age, she was able to do it although it was frustrating when the pieces moved out of place. For awhile, she thought that she had to use the picture boards in order to play with the toy properly.Once she got over that, we had a wonderful toy again.

If you throw away the picture boards from the beginning and let your child's creativity take over, you have a 5 star toy that even older children and adults enjoy tinkering with.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 3-year old loves it!
My daughter received these pattern blocks as a present. At 3 1/2, she now loves to play with them. She enjoys the challenge of putting the blocks on the pattern boards and making pictures.Yes, as another reviewer noted, the wood blocks can slide around on the wood pattern boards. My daughter was initially frustrated that the blocks didn't "stick". But, this is not intended to be a puzzle. After sitting with her a few times and showing her she could just move the blocks back into place, the frustration was gone. This is one of her favorites. She especially likes to pick out 2 of the boards and have someone else make one picture while she's making another.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it looks.
This is a great concept but it does not work! The wooden pieces do not stay in place as you put the picture together. It's not awful but it frustrates my child, he wants each piece to stay exactly where he put it!I would try 'Playful Patterns' by Discovery Toys.It has foam pieces on a plastic board so they hold. Also, they have more shapes that can be used to make other shapes - semi circles to make circles, right angled triangles to make squares etc. ... My kid mostly played with the cars as though they were cars.He did some shape matching for a few minutes, but would get bored with that pretty quickly. My biggest problem was pulling the splinter out of his lip after he gnawed on one of the puzzle pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES these puzzles!
These durable, well-constructed wooden puzzles are a big hit with the 18 months + crowd.I believe my son's love of trucks started with this educational puzzle. The pieces are easy for little hands to grasp with the attached pegs, the puzzle is easy yet developmentally sound for toddlers and definitely worth the money.Do yourself a favor though--get a puzzle holder if you plan on purchasing a few of these types of puzzles...

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a very nice learning toy
We purchased this for our sons, after finally finding it @ Toys'R'Us.

The toy is beautifully hand-made -- as well as perfectly put together, however, it does chip very easily...

Being that usually a child, as young as 1 1/2 will begin using puzzles, if interested; I think they should coat the puzzle a little better to avoid the various bumps and scraps it might encounter..

Other then the slight chipping after less than a month, it is a very nice puzzle, which is actually easier for our kids to play with then the regular flat puzzles...I think it was a very good idea for motor skill improvement...

4-0 out of 5 stars nice, smooth, durable puzzle
This is a nice puzzle, but I perfer the Jumbo Knob Puzzle Farm. The Jumbo Knob Puzzle has a knob instead of a peg and it is easier for little children to grasp.

This puzzle will do just fine though, .... The edges are smooth and the base of the puzzle is thick enough that it is not going to break. ... Read more

Each picture card contains two fruit pictures, set up side-by-side, domino-style. The name of the fruit is printed below the picture. Players take turns laying down their cards by matching a picture on one of their cards to an "open end" of one of the cards already played. If a player cannot play during a turn, she must draw a card from a face-down pile. If a matching card is picked, she plays that card. If a nonmatching card is picked, she must keep the card and her turn is over. The first player to place all her picture cards wins. Contains 28 picture domino cards and instructions. --Alison Golder ... Read more

I bought this game for my almost 3 year old son. There are not many games out there for kids that young. This is a great game because it teaches him different fruits and how to identify them. He was playing and matching all the fruits the first day we had the game ! He can't get enough ! I highly recommend this game !

I am Mommy to 23 month old twin girls, both with slight speech delays. We got this for Christmas last year, but just took it out a few weeks ago.I am proud to say they can both identify all of the fruits and name them back to me correctly! This has been a great tool fo rme to help them get to talking more.We don't really "play" the game yet, but we have learned fruit names and colors, as well as matching, from the cards!

The cardboard is a bit flimsy, but then again my girls are a bit young and may just me hard on things.I HIGHLY recommend this!I can't wait until they can play it by the rules - it will be so much fun for our WHOLE family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the youngsters
I bought this game for my toddler. He is only 2 and a half. There are not many games out there for kids that young. This is a great game because it teaches him different fruits and how to identify them. Then, as he gets older, he can learn how to match them. The pieces are thick and durable---even after he put half of them in his mouth!
I highly recommend this game.I am going to buy the other titles in the series (the animal matching and others). ... Read more

Editorial Review

Toddlers get a tactile treat with this wooden, four-piece pet menagerie puzzle. The cheery gray tabby cat, orange dog, and white rabbit all come with soft patches of furon their backs. (Unfortunately, the wooden parrot piece was left out of the sensoryfun--it comes with no feathers.) The challenge is for children to first match the pieces with thepicture in the slots and then fit them in correctly. The puzzle shapes don't sink all the wayinto their slots, and instead stay slightly raised, so they are easy for little hands to graspand lift. The careful handcrafting is evidenced in the brightly painted pictures and cleanlysanded edges. --Hannah Reynolds ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome teaching puzzle
I bought this for my son (age 3 1/2) about 2 weeks ago.He has played with it non-stop everyday for the 2 weeks. He really likes to take out one piece - put it back in and hear the fire engine sound.I like it as a parent beacause when you take out all the pieces you still have the picture underneath, so the children can remember where to put the pieces. It's next step up. ...
