5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Game I Own, but for Hardcore Fans Only
You better know your stuff before you plan on purchasing this game and make sure you know 2-4 people who know more than they should as well about the Star Wars universe. Some of these questions are extremely tough and there are very few easy ones. I used to play the Decipher Star Wars card game, so my memory of those cards actually helped me a lot with remembering certain characters that were barely mentioned in the films. This is a truly great game that we knowledgeable Star Wars fans finally deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a Star Wars fan, this is fun
There's nothing like getting together with fellow Star Wars fans and play this special version of Trivial Pursuit. It's great! It's just like the old Trivial Pursuit with, of course, questions only about Star Wars. When you try for a wedge, however, you have to resort to one of two DVDs that come with the game for the question. If you don't answer the question in the time limit given, your oponents can shout out the right answer - as long as they don't have the wedge - and possibly steal it from you. If you like the classic Trivial Pursuit and you happen to be a Star Wars fan and you have a couple like-minded friends or family members, this is a lot of fun and definitely worth the money. ... Editorial Review

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Only the Force powers of the Jedi Bastila prevented the Sith from overwhelming the Republic's weakened forces. At the start of the game Malak has usurped control of the Sith by betraying Revan and has attacked the ship carrying Bastila and yourself. In true Star Wars style, the game begins with a bang.

The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure told with humor, compassion, and respect for the source material. Your character has a mystical bond with Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People.

Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system--anyone who has played Dungeons & Dragons will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Unlike the faceless non-player characters of other games, each member of the supporting cast has an intriguing history and even agenda. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Depending on who you chose to take with you, new dialogue and even intra-party arguments come into the game (put the Mandalorian veteran with the Republic patriot and you'll see sparks fly). Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item.

Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Building and character models are not impressive--about what you get in GTA 3. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars.

All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game.--Mike Fehlauer

Pros:

  • Captivating storyline
  • Clever dialogue
  • Star Wars feel
  • True story and dialogue support for either Light Side or Dark Side play
  • Brilliant combat graphics
  • Fascinating characters (the loyal--and homicidal--droid HK-47 is truly unique)
Cons:
  • Occasional bugs in dialogue, movie playback
  • Cannot transfer equipped gear between characters while on your ship

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Awesome game.
My friend owns this game, not me. Even still, I am amazed at this game. In two days, I have played it for over 10 hours (it counts). The gameplay is awesome, plot is awesome, and it isn't a game that can be easily beaten. The part that I love the most is that you can choose whether your character will be good or evil, which will affect the game plot. I don't own an Xbox, but after playing this game, I am considering buying one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its fun, its just...
This game really is a good time, the graphics are awesome, and the story is great. BUT, I dont like having the XBOX doing the fighting for me.Im a big boy I can defend my self from the evil Sith. This game is really hard too, I suggest you get the guid

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a believer!
When a friend suggested to me to buy this game, I frowned in disbelief mainly becasue Episode I and II had just come out I was very disappionted with the overall quality of these movies and swore to myself that I would never buy a Star Wars product ever again. Bad mistake becasue after my friend had convinced me to go out and buy it, I found that i was addicted to it.

Now I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but I found this game's engine to be very easy to both learn and to master. The character's are fully custimizable and range from a psycho droid to a lumbering wookie to a Jedi hermit. You can change everything from armor to weapons to headgear on your characters while they are with you.

The cutscenes are absolutly beautiful are almost make me beleive that I am in a movie theatre for a few seconds.

The two things that really make this game though are the dark/light choices and the story line. Everything that you do in the game affects your dark/light alignment, which in turn dictates your appearence and how costly some dark or light side force moves will be. The story is amazing and compelled me to play the game all the way to the end just to find out the final of many plot twists at the end.

Overall, this game was amazing and I would suggest it to anyone who wants to play either a deep story driven game or someone who just wants to crack some heads after watching Episode I. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible baseball simulator
This is, without a doubt the worst baseball simulator out there. It's like EA just gave up on the product being that it's the last year they are doing it.The baseball games are just unrealistic. For exampleI'm three months into my season and all my starters have at least 2 perfect games each while my team has a batting average of .217!It's just impossible to hit in this game for both computer and player.I've even adjusted the contact levels to no avail. This game is just terrible!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elite of 2005's Lineup
MVP Baseball 2005 is the closest game currently on the market to give you the most in-depth baseball experience possible. In my opinion, the only people not liking some aspects of this game will be New York Yankees fans. It's not only Manny on the cover, but also the intro video, cracks and comments throughout the games and even a song praising Boston's first title in 86 years. Well, all I can say is, if you can't overlook those things, you're missing one fantastic game. Let's break it down:

Owner Mode:
New this year is Owner Mode where you begin with picking a stadium (not one of the existing ballparks, but a starter stadium) and making a few upgrades (seating, lights, whatever you can afford before opening day). You can add a restaurant, set ticket prices, make promotional days and on and on.

You have a financial advisor for the season, budget reports, player contracts, etc. One note: Yes, you can be the owner and play the game just like you would in Dynasty Mode. You can sim, play individual games, manage the game or sit in your luxury box and watch it all take place. There is so much to this mode that I couldn't possibly fit it into this review.

Dynasty Mode:
This mode is essentially the same as last year. Keep the owner happy, the players, do contracts and play the games. It's been updated and tweaked for more user friendly experience. And I can't leave out that this year, you even have single-A teams in addition to AA, AAA, and MLB.

Mini Games:
Instead of just a Home Run Derby, EA has included a variety of features that can teach you different aspects of the game. There is batting practice, pitching practice and also a scenario editor. To me, I found it to be an enjoyable experience especially when hitting the cars and busses over the outfield wall. This seems like a throw back to Triple-Play 2000 when you had target practice.

Graphics:
Simply amazing. Need I say more? The players faces and stances are mirrored to their real-life counterparts. Cutscenes, and animations are gorgeous. The only thing I found a proble with was the crowd...even in 2005, they are still wooden-looking. That's a sacrifice you have to make and it doesn't detract from the game experience.

Gameplay:
What a shift from last year! Pitching is now a lot more realistic with the way you use the meter. Instead on the old meter where you set power and tried to hit right spot, they have upgraded it to you having to stop it and exactly the right moment, if not, you risk and early or late breaking pitch. In rookie mode, it's not as big of a deal as it is in MVP mode. Make some mistake pitches in the higher levels and you're asking for trouble.

Batting is great! When you foul off a pitch, a little screen comes up and shows you how you hit it. Fouling off a pitch is a mistimed swing, same as a swing through. Gone is the animation where you swung, missed the ball and it popped up the crazy box to show you missing it. Instead, this year, they have the popup box, yet include the ball trail so you see how you missed it.

Fielding & baserunning is comparable to last years version with some great upgrades to visuals. There are plenty of dives, showboating grabs, wall jumps, and take-out slides.

Ok, I could go on & on with this review because, like I said, this is the most in-depth baseball game I have ever seen. If you want the best out there, MVP Baseball 2005 hits a Home Run.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Version yet
Unfortunately, it may also be the last version due to TakeTwo's contract with MLB.

Anyway, this is a great addition to EA's collection of sports titles. Some cons include:Commentators have new things to say, in addition to the old things, but they still get dull rather quickly. You can only control one team at a time.I like to play NCAA football and Madden while "playing" one team and "playing owner, gm, etc." for another.

Pros:

1)Graphics:So much smoother in this version. The outfield characters are leaner and better looking. The stadiums look great and even when you create a ballpark, it still looks good.

2)Gameplay:It is tougher to field, hit, etc. but I consider this a good thing.Fielding is tougher because when you're tracking a fly ball you don't automatically stop on the circle. You actually have to pay attention once you get "close".Hitting is tougher, I think, and I actually have had to lower my level of gameplay to make myself more competitive.Baserunning is also more of a challenge. The pitchers are better at picking your runners off, and while you can modify the "gameplay tuning" it doesn't make winning automatic.Additionally, they fixed a "bug" from the 2004 version that made it harder for left-handers to hit homeruns.

3)Game modes:
a.Dynasty:Great.Same as before.120 years to build a dynasty and see what you can do.

b.Owner mode:Wow!Only 30 years, but still long enough. You create your own stadium from pre-set options (This could be improved). You buy food stands to sell food to the fans. You buy batting cages, souvenir stands, order fireworks night, order magnetic schedules, etc. This is to get the fans to come, keep them interested while they're there, and hopefully make more money. You start off with a stadium of 20,000 and can work your way up to 65,000 (I think).Everything you buy costs money, but in the long run, you'll hopefully be able to turn a profit. This is hard.So far, I'm 30 games in and $5 million in the whole.

c.Mini-games.The pitching mini-game is HARD!Wow!It's not an automatic win.Of course, I could be losing because I'm using the Pirates. You have a "strike-zone" and you have to pitch the ball to certain locations in the strike-zone.THere is a timed game and an un-timed game. The batting mini-game is actually relatively easy, but definitely good for honing your directional hitting skills. You can also play these mini-games in your "season" games during spring training. It allows you to improve, or negate, your players' ratings.

d.Home-run Derby.Same as before.

One thing I really like that I didn't notice in the previous version is that when you do the different mini-games and homerun derby, the computer actually tells you how many points you got based on the level of difficulty. If you put it on higher settings (of difficulty) you get more points, but it's so much harder the higher you go.

I only became a baseball fan a few years ago, but these games have really helped me understand the game a bit better, learn more about the players, and boggled my mind with the number of things we can do with technology.

Great Game.Try www.easports.com first because they're currently offering free shipping. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mommy look, it's a SpongeBob game. It must be good...
I don't think so. I am a HUGE SpongeBob fan. My friend owns this game for Gamecube. The Gamecube version is great! You KA-RA-TE chop, bubble bowl, and rock out with SpongeBob. Using Patrick you spin around, cartwheel, and smash. That was a description of the Gamecube game. Now, I don't own a Gamecube so I got a GBA game, thinking it would be somewhat the same. I was very wrong. It is a 2d side-scroller, no KA-RA-TE chops, no cartwheel, not one single attack except for smash. You destroy enemies and bosses (very easy bosses) by jumping on their heads. Regular enemies either walk back and forth, float and throw stuff, try to hit you with a hammer, just float up and down or burp on you. Very easy enemies. Even easier bosses. Bosses have their own special combo of attacks. You avoid them(includes running at you, jumping on you, throwing stuff at you) by jumping over them, ducking,or dodging and when they pause you jump on their heads. Do this 3 times and you've beaten that boss, way too easy for gamers. You collect clams to buy so called "upgrades". All these really are are lives, buckets(explained later) and bonus levels. Buckets are buckets full of soap. When you press L SpongeBob drinks the soap and spits bubbles everywhere, destroying every enemy on the sceen. When you hold R you charge up for "hyper speed". When bubbles appear behind you let go of R and you'll run really fast destroying any rocks or enemies in your way. Press A to jump, and A again to float with Patricks pants. B isn't used. Two more things, I went through this game in one hour, and it doesn't save (you have to enter a code you get every two levels). This was a waste of $30. I hope this review helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars one more time...
This doll is so beautiful I really could not chose if I wanted the redhead with the peridot dress or the tawny colored hair with the red dress or the pale blonde in the purple dress. At this price?I bought them all! They are so utterly beautiful. The stunning, long hair is pale blonde, instead of the red or tawny hair, and the grown is purple this time (know my cousin Mary is going to love that!), but again so sophisticated. The makeup is perfect, not too little, not too much. Everything about these dolls is perfect. Sheer understated perfection.

One of the most beautiful Barbie is last couple of years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful doll
I just received this lovely doll as a gift, and though I agree with a previous reviewer that Mattel could have used a nicer fabric for her dress, I have no complaints about her.Her hair is almost a strawberry blonde color, and her eyes are hazel instead of green or blue. For the price I think she's a gorgeous doll, and it's actually a shame to keep her in a box!

4-0 out of 5 stars Spellbound Lover doll
I am disappointed that they chose to use a material that feels like plastic to make the dress. I wish they would stop being so cheap and use better-quality fabric. Other than that, the doll seems very beautiful-attractive facial paint, lovely long hair, and pretty dress style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Lovely
I am a Barbie collector of limited means and often have great difficulty in making my choices.I am not at all disappointed in this lovely lady. The fabric choices for her attire are simply gorgeous.I laugh when I remember making my own Barbie doll clothes as a child out of polyester and seersucker scraps. She is beautiful and beautifully dressed.I only wish I could win a lottery to be able to acquire more of these exquisite collectibles.I doubt she will leave the box again, no matter how much my kids beg. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An 11 year- old 's review
If I could give this game over 5 stars, I definitely would. This is an excellent game!!! I got it for Christmas, and since then, I've played it every chance I get. All my 18 other games have been gathering dust since 12/25/05. I would reccomend this game to all ages. You can get sheep, cows, and chickens. You can also get a horse and a dog. You also pick a girl to become your girlfriend, and,if you try hard, to eventually become your wife. There's a whole lot more to this game than raising crops, as you'll find out if you buy the game. I guess I'm not doing a very thourough job of describing this game, am I? Well, I absolutely LOVE this game, so buy it now! I think that pretty much everyone would like this game! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay game
Hello my name is The Punisher from Mars. I will not tell you my nameFor security reasons. This is a good game but easy for me. I have beaten this game over 20 times in 15 days. I f you are looking for a good game with good graphics and easy to beat this game is probably fo you. I have all of the Budakai games and I have reserved the up coming Dragon Ball Z Sagas it looks good.

4-0 out of 5 stars fun.
This game is really fun. I have all but uub and omega shenron unlocked(Inclouding ss4 vegeta and goku fusion. Again I need omega shenron. Anyone know how to get him.?

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a big fan of Dragon Ball Z...
And when I'm a fan of something, that means I scrutinize it much more closely and wish very deeply to see it achieve its potential.
Dragon Ball Z is an anime series that revolves around characters with superhuman powers such a superhuman strength, speed, endurance, flight and the power to fire blasts of life-energy from their palms. These powers grow stronger the more they train, and so as such, they spend most of their time either training or fighting.
Now, I believe Dragon Ball Z could use fighting game elements to make a perfect game based on the animated series. No, I don't think this is that game, but there's a reason for that.
In virtually every episode of the series, you'll hear someone talking about something, witness someone training to get stronger, or watch as one or more of the good guys is paralyzed with fear over how much stronger the enemy is than they are.For example, when Vegeta attacked the Earth, he was so strong that he put Goku (arguably the series' main character) in a hospital bed.Yet later in the series, he is attacked and almost killed by Zarbon, one of Frieza's henchmen.Zarbon, in turn, had less than half the strength of characters like Burter or Jeice, who in turn, were about half as strong as Ginyu, the person commanding them.Ginyu was, as far as we know, Frieza's second in command, but Frieza was over 100 times stronger than he was.Over 1000 times in the american series.
In fact, Frieza was so powerful, that he single-handedly wiped out the entire planet that Vegeta hailed from with a simple gesture IN HIS WEAKEST FORM.
This is a massive power difference between two characters in the series, as you might imagine.
But Budokai 3 is a fighting game. There's no getting around that. And in a fighting game, having one character who can annihilate another just by breathing hard wouldn't work too well, would it?
Well, at any rate, I doubt it would, in a fighting game.It would, however, work just fine in an RPG.The whole "training and getting stronger" thing is just another word for what we in the video game community call "mining for experience."A system that could easily be incorporated into a game like this as a bonus game/story mode, while also incorportating the enormous mathematical power levels that DBZ brings forth.
But in this game, the biggest difference between the character of Frieza and the character of Cell lies in their movesets. In the anime, Cell could kill Frieza with one punch, but in this game, it's not too tough to beat Cell using Frieza in a fight.
Furthermore, and more to the point, when I fought Cell as Goku in this game's story mode, he wasn't really any tougher than when I fought Frieza, nor was he really that much stronger.
Maybe some day a DBZ RPG will come out in the vein of Kingdom Hearts gameplay-wise, that will faithfully represent the vast gulf in power between the DBZ characters. This game does not fulfill the potential of a DBZ video game because of this.
However, in virtually every other respect, I think this game is great. It's got quite a few DBZ fighters (though it does leave out a few, like Kibito, Chaotsu, Burter, Jeice, Zarbon, Dodoria, Cui, 19, etc...) and quite a few moves and move styles for those characters that are even customizable at one point. When I picked it up, I was so anxious to see which characters I could earn that I didn't put it down for a day and a half.I was that obsessed.
Long and short, this game may not be what I've been waiting for in terms of a DBZ video game, but it's the best DBZ FIGHTING game I've ever seen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great game
Mercenaries takes place in Korea, sometime after the Korean War.You'll notice such things on your map as the Demilitarized Zone. There are 4 groups you can sign contracts with: Allies, South Koreans, Chinese, and Russian Mafia.North Koreans are always your enemies no matter what.Other reviewers have said that this game is a lot like GTA, which is true in that you can steal vehicles, it's a third person shooter, and you can do basically whatever you want.I think it's better in a few ways: 1) you can steal HELICOPTERS 2) you don't have to drive around to find a gun shop, you can have ANYTHING dropped off right in front of you by a helicopter, including health, guns, vehicles 3) you can order bombs dropped using satellites to pinpoint the location

Some cons for this game include:
1) Doesn't work with my wireless controllers, game skips.
2) Boss battles, called Ace contracts, are really hard.
3) Spontaneous death is definitely an option, whether it's someone hitting you in the face with a well-placed rocket, getting bombed by some helicopter, flying in a helicopter and suddenly being hit by anti-air missiles, having someone snipe you, getting hit by a tank, etc.
4) Not really sure how to get allied troops to help you.I was given some troops as "support" for one of the Ace contracts and they just sat there and did nothing.
5) You get charged money for civilian casualties.
6) When your radar gets jammed you can't order air strikes or supply drops which gets really annoying.
7) Can't save in the middle of a mission, so if you die you go back to the beginning.

Overall this is a great game, but it can get really frustrating at times. Don't expect to be invincible like some reviews suggest. This game requires military strategizing if you don't want to get blown up going in like a madman, guns blazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars More pleasurable/not as deep as GTA
GTA really set the mold for freeform gaming, and it is the game by which other "copy-cats" are compared. It truly revolutionized a particular style of gaming. However,Ample credit (and $$)has been laid at Rockstar's feet, so here's to hoping that games can be judged on their own merits from this point on. After all, Miles Davis pioneered numerous styles in Jazz and launched "copycats," but what Jazz fans appreciated was what other musicians brought to Davis's initial creation(s). So, okay, Mercenaries vehicle physics pale in comparrison. But the question is: how does it deviate? Simple: it gives us splendid arcade war! Why would a gamer be interested in the car tricks that one can pull (ala GTA) when playing this? Its WAR! When playing a war game, my motivation is to hurt the enemy before he can hurt me...and since, in this game, I owe no particular alliegence to any nation, I get to cause much hurt. The vehicles are tools o' destruction, for Pete's sake!My only want in the vehicle dept. is that they never provided a heavily armed 'copter. But, man! I sure had a blast when I got my hands on my first No. Korean tank(spent an hour in a No. Korean base blowin' stuff up-cathartic destruction indeed, great escape from the stresses of the real word).Really improved upon GTA's gun targeting system (Rockstar disappointed me so much in their not improving this aspect during Vice City's release, that I'm not buying another GTA game till the fix this).Anyway, Mercenaries' A.I. is dumbed down, but this just made my avatar feel more super-heroic!And besides, some of the missions are difficult (my record, at games completion: died 40 times and had to restart missions 38 times). The final mission was particularly challenging, which really embellished the climatic feeling. The learning curve was just steep enough to keep the game challenging while also keeping it from being frustrating. ANd the second map came just in time to rescue me from becoming bored with the game.First game I've had to play every night (into the wee hours of the morning) since Shenmue II. In closing, X-box version has better frame-rates, less slow-down than PS2 version, but PS2 version looked dang good too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Fun!!!
If you're still doubtful about buying this game due to negative reviews, read no more and Just Buy It. First of all Winning Eleven 8 can't possibly be compared with any Fifa edition. This game is exciting, fun, and most certainly realistic. Once you get control of a player, you can imagine it is you dribbling the ball and taking spectacular shots at goal at any angle you desire and however fast you want it to go. A great feature is that each player is given distinct and original skills. Pavel Nedved is unstoppable or if you like putting a bit of crazy speed, give the ball to Ronaldinho and even bust a "gambeta" here and there. I can continue writing all night long but then again you need time to pay for this game. One last thing, there is a bad aspect to it, it turns to be time consuming once your fully into it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The lack of licensing ruins it as always.
Like any other game in the sries winning eleven eight puts a strong emphasis on gameplay, and being a big fan of the sport i appreaciate that fact. But once again the lack of licensing brings the games presentation down along with visuals that cant compare to the fifa series. I have been buying both fifa and winning eleven 8 games side by side for a long time, and every year i enjoy fifa more. While i can understand why this game is said to be better then fifa and is pereffered by gamers it still doesnt work for a statistical buff like me who finds licensing to be an important part of ne soccer game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game ever

Editorial Review

Pokémon Ruby's updated graphics with weather effects, amazing sound, more than 200 Pokémon with over 100 new species--as well as its faithful adherence to the existing series of Pokémon games--makes for a welcome evolution in the series.

First, the game has a lot in common with Pokémon games Silver, Gold, and Crystal. For example, players can choose to be a boy or a girl trainer, an internal clock sets events at certain times, and you’re the game's handy-dandy Pokédex helps players keep track of the many stats. You're main goal is still to beat all the Gym Trainers and become the Pokémon Master. If you've played the old games, you will be right at home. But not all is the same.

The most obvious change is in the battles themselves. Now that two Pokémon can fight on your side at the same time, you can tag-team them against an enemy by taking advantage of the strengths of your Pokémons while covering their weaknesses. For example, you can now have a water Pokémon watch your fire Pokémon's back. You can also attack more than one Pokémon at a time.

A whole new element to the game focuses on how berries are used in battle. And if you collect enough berries, you can take them to a Berry Blender and make a PokéBlock, which is a little super-charged candy that raises your Pokémon's "Condition" attributes. You can then groom your Pokémon for regional contests and compete for ribbons like "Best of Show," which will unlock additional contests. There's even strategy in how to best use your berries: pick too many and the berry tree will disappear; plant berries, though, and a tree will grow. You can also build a Secret Base in special areas of the game, which you can decorate just like you can your room.

And let us not forget that Pokémon Ruby has a kickin' multiplayer system, too. You can trade Pokémon, and link up to four players for incredible battles. The only downside is that you can't link up with the old Game Boy Color games. --Bryan Karsh

Pros:

  • You can control two Pokémon in battle
  • Much needed graphic and sound facelift
  • Nice multiplayer feature (requires link cable and extra game cartridge)
Cons:
  • Can't trade Pokémon with Game Boy Color

4-0 out of 5 stars Back to the Basics, But Tinged With Pop Culture.
TRIVIAL PURSUIT VOLUME 6 is one of the better regular editions of trivial pursuit to come along in several years (the last good regular edition was VOLUME 2). It's the same basic trivial pursuit game that has been played for the past 20 or so years, but with over 5,000 new questions. The categories are the same as in most of the Trivial Pursuit games:People & Places, Arts & Entertainment, History, Science & Nature, Sports & Leisure, and Wild Card. Also, there haven't been any major rule changes as far as I can tell.

Nevertheless, the game does have one major flaw. There is an overabundance of questions relying on popular culture that pop up (pardon the pun) in all of the categories, including the history and science & nature categories.I know that some of the early Trivial Pursuit games made for young people contained many pop culture references, but the original Trivial Pursuit games did not. One of the reasons that the history and science & nature cateogries used to be some of the most difficult categories to win at was because they didn't have any pop culture questions. That isn't the case with this edition.

Still, the game is a lot of fun to play and is a great way to study up on useless knowledge (something that I'm quite familiar with). By the way, what extract of the cinchona tree was once known as "Jesuit bark," for the missionaries who first brought it back to Europe? Anyone know?

A:quinine.

1-0 out of 5 stars You have to be kidding me . . .
Sorry, but Volume 6 does NOT compare to the classic Genus and Genus II versions of this game.Rather, Volume 6 relies heavily on People Magazine-type trivia -- lots of inane pop culture-oriented questions, for which even die-hard trivia fans will be saying "Who cares?"An example of this is a question about Christina Ricci appearing in a GAP commercial. This was in the HISTORY category!Lame!About 40% of the questions seemed to fall into this category.Another 20-30% were ridiculously easy, a further 20% ridiculously obscure. The creators have also ditched the nuanced questioning style of the original game, by which one could often deduce the answer, even when it was something otherwise unknown.

I think the problem here is that TP is issuing too many versions in too short a period of time.Genus 5, which I DO like, came out fairly recently (I think), and I think TP needs to take some more time to write better questions.Part of the fun of TP has been that you learn from the questions you miss. With Volume 6, you just don't care.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old classic
If you're unfamilliar with the concept of this game, which I can't really imagine, Trivial pursuit, in all its many incarnations, is a game of trivia, in which you must answer correctly at least one question in each category in order to win.The categories are: Arts and Entertainment, Sports and leisure, Science and nature, People and places, History, and a wild card category. The questions are hard, most of them will be things you probably have heard of and forgotten, since they are trivia, yet you'll always find that question which you know, making the game fun and exciting for every player. For comparison, Most of the questions in this game would be up on the upper levels of the TV show Jeapordy.

If you love random trivia and love even more besting your friends and showing off your knowledge of that random trivia, then this might just be the game that you've been looking for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
I got to say, this is very impressive, becuase it has its very own Three-Point Shootout and its very own Dunk Contest. It would have been even better if it had the skills challenge and the RadioShack Shooting Stars (well, at leatst the Skills Challenge), because there was this game I played on NBA.com that had asome kind of game like the Skills Challenge, but overall, this video game is very impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best B-ball game this year.
This is a great basketball game for all you hardcore basketball fans. This is the only b-ball game that has the all-star weekend that includes: Rookies vs Sophmores, 3-point contest, Slam Dunk contest, and the All-Star Game. The 3-point contest is the best of all because it is challening with most of the players get into the low 20's or the high 20's and even some competitors get 30. Now to the gameplay. It is great with the computer challenging you almost everytime and shots aren't easy to get when you face a man like Ben Wallace and Shaq. And in All-Star you have to watch out for being blocked a lot so you should set a lot of screens so you can get open shots. The Free-throw shooting is way easier on NBA Live than ESPN. You only have to look at the backboard and you will have a rectangle on top of the square in the of the backboard where you want to get it in the rectangle to make the free-throw. On ESPN you have to put the basketballs together and it is really difficult.
The only gripe I have about this game is when you are wide open you will miss at least 30% of the time, but on ESPN when you are wide open you will make it about 95% of the time.
Overall I think this is better than any other basketball game this year.

2-0 out of 5 stars TOO "ARCADEY"!!!!!!
Once again, EA sports had found a winning formula for a quality game title only to take a step back in the following year's version.Last year's NBA Live 2004 was a lot of fun and had pretty realistic gameplay. But this year's version is much too arcadey and gets boring real, real fast!As the obvious focus on the developer's minds was to add the dunk contest, they sacrificed other key areas of the gameplay in the process. For example, the collision detection is horrible. You'll drive to the basket through an open lane only to have your player contort his body and throw up a bad shot even when there didn't seem to be any defenders around! Also, they took away certain key gameplay features that have become a necessity in Hoops games. For example, when you choose a play from the coach's playbook, you no longer have a diagram that shows how the play is supposed to run....all you can do is GUESS! Also, when viewing your player's stats, you no longer have the ability to sort your players in terms of who had the least vs who had the most in that particulary stat column. Finally, and arguably the biggest gripe, is that running fast breaks has become very difficult.Unfortunately, it's not due to good defens as much as it is due to bad offensive AI.On fast breaks, wide open players almost NEVER run to the basket!Instead, they often run to a corner or simply stop near the top of the key to take a 3 pointer even if they are a big man!!!!!
I've been playing sports games for years and unfortunately, EA Sports has developed a pattern. After a year or two of releasing a quality sports title, they'll eventually release a version that takes the series a few steps in the wrong direction.ESPN NBA 2K5 is better this year but not much. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A full Multi-Category review (and MAVAV parody bonus!)
This time around, gamers are in for a special treat from me. Not only am I giving my Multi-Category review to Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, but I just found a spoof website the other day made by the MAVAV (Mothers Against Video game Addiction and Violence), and found the site hilarious, absurd, and infuriating. As a result, I'm proud to include as a bonus in this review a parody mixed in saying what MAVAV would probably say about this game.

Enjoy!

GRAPHICS: (Me): This Kirby game shows that Nintendo knows how to bring out the best in its systems. The graphics may be decried by some as kiddie, but you should never judge a book by its cover. RATING: 9
(MAVAV): Kirby is yet another cute little character made to take advantage of the same strategy the tobacco industry used: lure kids in and addict them!

SOUND: (Me): Good, it fits in well with the Kirby universe. RATING: 9
(MAVAV): Turn off the volume! That music contains subliminal messages that will tell your childrens' subconcious to play more!

PLOTLINE: (Me): Kirby is chopped into four separate Kirbys of different colors and must swallow enemies and use their powers to save Mirror World. Goo, but it can be a little basic. RATING: 7
(MAVAV): This game has extreme violence and trains kids to kill people! If your children see Sword Kirby give Mr. Flosty a whack, they will be guaranteed to grow up as hardened, murderous criminals!!!

CONTROLS: (Me): Excellent. All difficulty comes from the skill needed to succeed. RATING: 8.5
(MAVAV): Once your kids touch the GBA, they will not be able to let go of it. They will immediately become obese social outcasts and suffer from extreme mental problems!

GLITCHES: (Me): None, as far as I know. RATING: 9.5
(MAVAV): This game has loads of glitches! And according to our non-existent, made-up sources, that's a FACT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kirby game!!!
This game is a very fun and challenging game.It is kind of that game that you might play all day and everyday. And your friends can help you beat the game.So you can split up and conquer the areas.Call your friends to the area you are having trouble with, and if you need to heal, call him/her to your area and eat the food they broght. This game is a must since you have to complete the game 100% and it is not going to be easy!
