Editorial Review

Big interlocking block sets often come with too few pieces to really discover the joys ofbuilding. Not so with the Maxi Large Mega Bloks. This set has enough blocks to build a skyscraper andstill share more blocks with playmates. Ninety-nine blocks--oversized for small hands--come in green, yellow, white, blue, purple, and red. All pieces are made of smooth, durable plastic. Two people and onecar are included as snap-on accessories. All of it fits into a see-through storage bag that zips up and has acarrying handle for easy transport.--Lynne Sampson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Toys!
My son loves these blocks! This size is the perfect size for gift giving and the bags are so durable, that you can use them to store these bolcks again, and again, and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Consistently entertaining for 6 months now
My son got his first set of Mega Blocks when he was about 15 months. He loved to put them in his mouth and bang them together, and watch his father put them together. He has gradually gotten better at building with them himself, and now, at 21 months, he constructs huge towers (and knocks them down) or garages for his cars. He also *loves* the boy and girl that come with the set. He likes to talk about how the boy has buttons on his shirt but the girl doesn't, etc. He also points out all the colors of the blocks as he puts them together. No bleeping, annoying music, or batteries. Just my son and his imagination learning about construction, colors, geometry, hand-eye coordination, and math concepts. Every single morning one of the first things out of his mouth is "blocks!" and he runs out to play with them.

Some parents may not care about this, but another thing I *love* about this toy is that it's completely gender-neutral. No stupid stereotypes about what a kid should or shouldn't like. And his friends (boys and girls alike) like to play with his blocks with him.

I guess it would be nice if they were Duplo and connected with the Legos he'll undoubtedly move on to, but we're putting the price difference in his college fund :). This is easily the best value for the money or any toy for this age that I've seen.

3-0 out of 5 stars not as good as the original
After my 1 year old played with some Legos at a friends, we decided to get our daughter her own set.Since the store was out of Legos, my husband decided these would be the same. Wrong! These are much larger and seem to be harder for our child to put together. They also don't stay attached as well as Legos.Yes, the colors are nice, but after 1 day my husband admitted he had erred, and we have since purchased some Legos, which our daughter loves! Her favorite thing about the Mega Bloks was the large bag they come in, which she immediately put on her head. (yes, that's bad and I took it away from her). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Problematic.....
I bought this for my daughter who loves to dance and loves music. The cartridge worked perfectly for a month and a half and now all we hear is the static and the noise others have mentioned. I am going to try the non acetone nail polish remover trick mentioned below and see if that fixes the problem. I hope so - my daughter was really enjoying it. I am giving the cartridge only 2 stars because a well made product should not have to be 'fixed' to use it, in my opinion. At the very least you should be aware of the effort needed to keep the cartridge operational.

2-0 out of 5 stars Static as well...
Mine had a good deal of static as well. In fact it was unplayable - just garbled sounds and static. I am going to try to clean the connectors as the last reviewer described. hope this helps. The world music cartridge also has problems tho not a badly as this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars May need to be cleaned to work well

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sounds! We love it!
Okay, my Music block doesn't use a screwdriver except for the batteries. No idea what the complaints are about. There is a door to open to place in the cartridge. Maybe there are different versions. Mine you just open a door & place it in.

The songs on this cartridge are awesome..we love the cartoon sound effects! It's like overhearing a Looney toons cartoon! Its very entertaining & sounds great on ours. Our daughter loves it & our neighbors older kids have just as much fun at 1 and 3. Glad I found it on sale though!

The description clearly states that it is used with other Neurosmith products, not sure with the other reviewer thought it did...

1-0 out of 5 stars should provide more info on product
So you buy Music Blocks thinking this is all you need? Wrong, they plug into something else, not even shown on the same page, now try to find the block they plug into!
Products that require something else to work should be referred to that item, so the complete package is available!

Editorial Review

Smarty, a robot character who gestures and speaks, is designed to teach kids about numbers, shapes, and colors by engaging them in a number of home improvement projects. First the good points: Smarty, who is a kind of mechanical Bob the Builder, is nicely modeled, and his gestures really bring him to life, giving the feeling that he is actually talking to you. Likewise the included plastic tools are solid, chunky, and fun to hold and use. The bad news: the activities are repetitive and unsatisfying, the sound is unclear, and the learning content is questionable. The biggest problem is that the projects, which include building a pool and a picture frame, bear little relation to the activities that produce them, like hitting the red peg three times. When you complete a task, Smarty says "Good job!" and a highly pixilated image of whatever you just built appears. Not very satisfying--especially long term. Still, with music, talking, sawing, hammering, and all the rest, there is a lot for a child to do, even if it doesn't add up to a very meaningful experience. Bottom line: Smarty's Workshop looks great, and could still be fun despite some shortcomings. --David Stoesz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great fun toy
my son is only 2 and ghe loves this toy. i dont know they discontinued this item i love it,i also bought it for my friends son,he loves it.

1-0 out of 5 stars POOR QUALITY
My daughter is three years old.She played with this toy for five minutes (could've been even less) and it broke!I spent thirty five dollars on a toy she has yet to play with, and I refuse to throw it away, because it would be such a waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars FantasticFor Toddler Boy
My son started playing with this when he was 15 months...it's his favorite toy hands down. As he gets older he's able to use more of the tools and figure out different instructions and functions. He loves the lights, songs, sounds, and responsesthat Smarty makes, and he just never gets bored with this thing like so many other toys. All his friends are also captivated, too.

Smarty does take a licking and keep on ticking.Food and juice have been spilled all over it repeatedly and it still works well.Only complaint: eats 4 "D" batteries at a time like there's no tomorrow.Seems I'm replacing them every week.

I've never liked vtech products, but this one is clearly a winner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good for words
Alphabet blocks are a wonderful thing. But these aren't as good as either the MYKIDS set or the Melissa&Doug set, for one reason: those have different letters on opposite sides of a block, so the A block is also an N block. These have the same letter on three sides of one block, so with a set of 50 there are a lot of letters that appear on only one block. When a child wants to spell a word, odds are you won't be able to do it with this set.GIGGLE?Nope, only one G.BIG?Yes, but not without taking apart DOG.DIENCEPHALON?Ok, I'm being silly. But you get the idea. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great travel toy
I bought my twin sons this puzzle/peg toy for their 2nd birthday. They have loved this toy from the start. It is very colorful and that initially attracted them to it.Then they enjoyed putting pegs in the different holes. At first it was random, now at almost 3 years old, they like to sort by colors (orange pegs in the orange piece)and see how high the pegs can stack. They also love to count the pegs in each piece. The entire toy is very durable and if you lose a piece, Lauri will replace the part for a nominal charge.I love all of Lauri's toys and we bought the peg board and additional pegs. The primer pak is also a fun kit to take on the road.We take these toys to church, restaurants, and they are a great distraction when I have to make phone calls. They are quiet toys and they require no batteries. ... My 3 year old daughter got this toy for Christmas and she loves it.It is really easy to use and she can do most of it by herself. There is so much to do in each book she is allready learning alot.I can't wait to get her more books to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Grandma!
We got this for Christmas and our 3 1/2 year old loves it! He's able to change books himself, and the unit reads them to him. Then he goes through and touches the things he's interested in and it responds with information. The only drawbacks are that his pointing isn't that great as he rests the side of his palm on the book when he points and sometimes touches more than one thing, making the response confusing. A stylus would be better. Also, the book pages are easily creased and bent, making them less useful. Stiffer pages would be helpful. And at $14.99 a pop we are going to be making Fisher Price wealthy - but at least he's playing with something educational that holds his interest and doesn't make a big mess!! ... Read more

I got this toy for my 3 1/2 year old daughter and she loves it!Especially the 'echo' effect!!I like the fact that she can sing along to the music (on cassette tape) or a cappella.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun for a while...
This toy was fun for while. My aunt got it for me when I was like 7 or so.I loved it when I got it but it broke after a while.I was so sad when it broke so my mom returned it and got another one to replace it.I played with it for about a year and almost all the tapes are lost now.Just to warn you the sound isn't very good and the headset does not fit me at all.But maybe it's because I am to big for because I'm 10 now.Overall it's still an ok toy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but doesn't hold interest
My daughter received this for Christmas when she was 2.5 years old.Since she loved puzzles and had recently mastered her alphabet, I thought this was the perfect gift. For some reason, however, this puzzle never held her interest. She has now had it for almost 2 years and in all that time I don't think she has once played with it on her own. When I suggest it, she may play with it for a short time, but then she moves on to something else.I generally love the Melissa and Doug products, but I would suggest purchasing a different item.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uh, boooring.
I have 3 kids under 5.We've had this toy for 4 years, and they don't even bat an eye at it.We've tried everything to draw attention to this item, but it is either too advanced for even an alphabet-loving 5-year old, or it is boring.I thought it was fun, but my kids don't agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT IDEA!
I loved this puzzle the minute I went on to this site and found it. It is high in teaching kids dexterity, hand-eye coordination, working with phonics, matching pictures to their background, and learning the alphabet. I love it because there are no pieces to get lost. It will be enough to challenge my 3 year old and as she grows with it; it will be enjoyable to do it. She loves puzzles but I was never able to bring them into the car because the pieces are never attached. This one is different and will definitely be going on vacations, grandma's, and to the doctor's office. I also like the fact that it is 2 different puzzles. They can flip to the other side and they still have to figure the puzzle out. This puzzle is a class act all the way. Makes a great gift! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent quality wood stock
My sons (1.5 and 4 yrs.) recieved this for a present.I searched the product out on the internet becasue I want to buy a second set!

I've made blocks for my children before. For such a simple concept, it's a fair amount of work...So I appeciate block quality when I see it.

These blocks are all made of hardwood, good tight grain, not a single knot in any peice.I was really pretty surprised in just how well planned out, cut and sanded these blocks were.

My sons enjoy the blocks, but they like the wheeled cart even more! The need for a second "racing-cart" was really my motivation to look at a second set.

A note - Whenever I've made blocks I've used scrapes from "high-end" woods - mahogony, bird's eye maple, ebony, etc.I have always soaked these blocks in mineral oil to bring out a beautiful color and grain in the wood. The oil protects the wool from end drying over the years, keeps them clean (crayon won't stick to wood as well and being mineral oil - it is digestible if your child likes chewing on toys...

When I saw how nice these blocks were I treated them all to a mineral oil bath the next evening.

instructions:Get about 4 pints of mineral oil from a drug store.Heat oil under very hot tap water.Heat will thin oil and allow it to be absorbed by wood better.

Pour all oil into a pan (or a strong bag).Immerse as many blocks as you can in oil. Let them sit for a couple hours.

Take out of oil and let blocks sit for a night on a strip of paper towel - excess oil will sweat out.You can then paper towel blocks off if needed. They're ready to go ---They'll look beautiful for years - if you want to bring some life back into them, re mineral oil them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great educational toy!
I recently bought these blocks for my son's 3rd birthday. He is also into Legos so I thought that he would like this for building 'castles' and bigger houses. He loves it! I like it because he is learning about a wider variety of shapes than just the typical square, triangle, etc. He is learning about semi-circles, cylinders et al. The thing that I like best about this set is that the cleanup is just as important as the building. There is a definite sense of order that a child will naturally learn by putting this set away. All of the blocks are arranged into 5 boxes by type of shape, and then there is a drawing on the bottom of each box that tells the child where each piece is supposed to go.I told my son to "match the picture" and after just a few days, he insists on putting away the pieces by himself.Right now, I help him by putting half of the pieces into the box and he can then see how the rest of them fit in. I don't think that it will take very long before he gets it all right by himself. He also picks up each full box and stacks it onto the wagon. He then pulls on the handle to put it away in is place.I just wish the string were longer so that he didn't have to bend over to pull this (and he's little!), but I guess the company made it short for safety reasons. Overall, this is a great toy and worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding toy...
My daughter is 5 and is nuts about blocks. Loves them at school, etc. and while I love to buy her the moon I was hesitant into sinking several hundred dollars into blocks since she is already 5 years old. I came across this set and it is terrfic. the shapes of the blocks are outlined in the storage containers so putting the blocks back is a lot of fun too, kind of like a puzzle! I really liked that it has wheels and can be moved so effortlessly to the kitchen floor, etc. I plan on adding the Melissa/Doug set to THIS set as well just to give extra blocks for play...PERSONALLY I think 100 blocks is necessary b/c she does seem to run out with the 68 piece set so I think adding the box of Melissa/Doug will give her some additional playing pieces... I really like this et and think it is well worth the money. ... Read more

So, $10.00 seemed like such a good deal for 50 blocks, right?!Well, these aren't the blocks of my youth. Each side is maybe a square inch, no more.Other than the size, they are otherwise fine.At $9.99, its not worth the shipping to send them back, but be advised.

4-0 out of 5 stars They get used......thats what counts...right?
These blocks are good for the most part.My daughter is slowly learning the numbers, she mostly likes to see how high she can stack them before they fall. They are not good for infants to be around because the wood and the paint can chip off.If you your little one likes throwing you may want to look into a more sturdy block set because they can brake apart if you have a Hyper kid or if any animals in the house enjoy chewing things.Overall I think these are fine, my 2 1/2 yr Old Loves them and it keeps her happy and from stacking the Toilet Paper:O) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT A MUST HAVE FOR APARTMENT AND CONDO OWNERS
I Have been looking at block sets for a while I live in a 2 bedroom condo and do not have a lot of space My nearly 3 year olddaughter loves to stack things I knew I was getting her a set of blocks..I looked at every one and figured the more blocks that it holds the more I have to pick up.
This is an excellent choice! Not only is this handy but my daughter builds directly in the wagon so I dont have to worry about tripping on a hidden block! This is an excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great block set!
Grandma and Grandpa got this for my son (13 months) and he and my daughter (3.5 yr) love it! I wasn't sure if there were enough blocks to build much with, I had looked at 50-75 piece sets in the store, but it seems to be plenty. My daughter has had a great time with them. My son has had a great time knocking them down! He also loves to chew on them, the blocks are big enough that I am not worried about him choking. 4-0 out of 5 stars Alphabet Art Puzzle ~ I Recommend for 18-Months and Up.
In shopping for puzzles over the last few years I've noticed that the manufacture's age recommendations seem to be a bit off. When puzzles are too advanced, the simple solution is to put it up for a later date; however, when they are too simple, they're a waste of money.Unfortunately, the Alphabet Art Puzzle was one of those disappointments.

The puzzle encourages thinking, and matching, but I'm not sure it helped to teach the alphabet. In addition, some of the images are too goofy for this age group. For instance, a piece of Rope is shaped into the letter "R," but a 3-year old don't associate with such a thing.Another example of this, is the letter "Y" for Yarn.Wouldn't a Yo Yo be a better solution? The raised pieces do offer a new motor challenge from plastic knobs, but they are too shallow for the board.I can't seem to move this puzzle without dropping several pieces on the floor. My son found this frustrating as well.

What's more, I think the age recommendation needs to be adjusted.I purchased the Alphabet Art Puzzle when my son was 2-years and 4-months old. It's recommended for children 3-years and up, so I thought it would make a good choice. It didn't challenge him at all.The second time he worked it, he completed it in less than 4-minutes by himself. That said, my son has benefited from the puzzle. He likes working it, and continues to ask questions about the pictures.I recommend it for children 18-months and up, as they will find it more challenging than a 3-year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really terrific puzzle!
This puzzle is one of my favorite gifts to give all the youngsters in my life.I've given it as a shower gift, a birthday present, and a Christmas present, and the kids have all loved it.It has held up very well, even with a few pretty destructive types. It's very visually engaging, and most kids can figure out what most of the pictures represent. Only a few are tricky.Overall, I highly recommend this puzzle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool

5-0 out of 5 stars Mommy toy shopper for 2 toddler boys (3 and 2).
My boys love this toy.I'm a stay at home mom always searching for fun, safe, educational toys for my boys.I always review the toys first before I allow the boys to play with them. This toy is so cute that I played with it for 15 minutes. I called the boys to show them their new toy and it was a big hit the minute they saw it. My boys are having fun and learning their letters too. This is one of the best alphabet learning toys I've bought so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Toy for Preschoolers!
My daughter is 3 1/2 and she just loves this toy.We pretend like she is in school and the teacher is talking to her too.She understands how class is and how different every child is and she finds it very interesting.I think it will help ease her mind before she starts going to school. It has alot of games on it too that keeps her interested in it.I would buy this toy over and over again. It also has a volume button which is great since most toys are very very loud.I would recommend this toy to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers
I bought this two months ago for my four year old.She plays with it sporadically which at first made me think that she didn't really like it that much. But, in playing word games with her orally, she will say "/G/ /G/ /G/...Greg.It's the letter G"Sometimes she has to run over to the game to check to see where the kid with the /i/ sound is, for example. Then she comes running back to tell me the letter that makes that sound. As she gets older, I think she will enjoy playing all of the games available with this toy, but for now, even the small amount of time she spends playing with it has made a big difference in her early phonics learning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Item
My bears did not come with a bag. Other than the lack of a bag, these are the same counting bears we have in our home. These are great.

My son has learned to group things by color using these, count with these, and now add and subtract with these counting bears. There are additional worksheets that are laminated that you can buy to help your child work through various math problems using these bears. I have also recently bought an elementary scale with buckets to weigh the bears. He can compare the weight of bears to other items with it.

These bears are a great start for math manipulatives. With the purchase of a few other math items, these bears can easily be encorporated into math all the way up to 3rd grade. My two year old daughter enjoys playing with the bears as well. She lines them up and pretends they are going to the store together.

well worth the money.
Enjoy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
I was disappointed with this toy.I felt a little misled when I read the discription because I thought it would come with the song, "Wheels on the Bus" in Spanish.Instead, there is a song which we were not familar. It is not a favorite of my daughter, nor any of her friends who visit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as interesting as the 'English' version
My son received this as a gift, and I thought since he liked the 'English' version he would like this one.He didnt seem to take to it as much. The music isnt as interesting and the songs are shorter. There aren't as many options for him.And on a personal level, the Spanish was Castellano with doesnt really help when most of us in the U.S. speak Espanol from the Americas.I think that they should make a version for the children that will be using it here on this Continent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Spanish from Spain
Kids learn the ABC's in spanish by repeating what they hear.Press the animals and they talk and press the letters and they are spelled. Not so much fun. It always does the same thing. If an animal asks to press a letter and the kid doesn't press the correct one, it doesn't tell you it is the wrong one or to try again. It doesn't teach to spell any word, only letters. The spanish is from Spain so it is not so good for Latin America because they spell some letters differently. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CHOKING HAZARD!!
I work with two year olds at a U.S. Air Force child development center in Germany. Our Training and Curriculum specialist purchased two of these shape sorting boxes for my classroom.Notice in the picture the two rounded pegs inside the short end of the box. These are there to hold up the flipping sorting lid.Within the first day of use, these pegs fell out and were found by me in a child's mouth.Luckily, the child simply spit out the pegs, but there is a real choking hazard in small parts like this. When a toy is purchased for a child, we should not have to worry about it falling apart and injuring a child.I would NOT buy this product! ...
