5-0 out of 5 stars Kid-approved "sneaky education"
This puzzle is my 2 1/2 year old son's absolute favorite. He does it on his own, and is starting to know the state names. He will do it over and over and over again, and thinks it's great fun.I think it's a great way to help him learn! It's kind of nice when a learning tool has to be pried out of my child's hands....

If I had one complaint, it would be that Alaska is on the bottom left corner of the puzzle; it would have been nice if they'd made the puzzle larger so they could stick Alaska in roughly the right place. Not a big deal, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT educational toy!
My 3 year old son spotted this puzzle while we went browsing in the store. He wanted it SO badly even though it was rated for older children.Within 3 days of playing with this puzzle, he quickly mastered all 50 states, knew exactly where they all go at a moment's notice. Then in a few days, he is able to clearly identify and pronounce each state accurately. He can read a little bit, and I had to show him North and South so he could place the Dakotas in their places. We had moved to Arizona from California a few months earlier, so he understood that his "small house" was in CA and that we now live in AZ.Two weeks after playing this puzzle, we went to California to visit our old friends and favorite places.Upon returning home, he demonstrated he really understood the map even more and even knows Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean and several cities. Because he has 2 other USA maps, he has said several times that "Michigan is a mistake! They forgot to cut out Upper Peninsula (Upper Michigann)"!!!!I was originally from Michigan and know that Michigan has 2 parts. What I'd like to see in this puzzle is 50 individual pieces, even though they may be small and that their cutouts reflect more accurate shapes (maybe make the states a bit bigger!).My parents still have the wooden puzzle from late 1960's with all 50 pieces. Now, where can I find wooden maps of other places:Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia, showing pictures of the countries, along with capital cities and other information? My son is already learning a few countries in Europe and is so eager and so ready to absorb more information in geography! We play the USA map puzzle practically every evening before he goes to bed! He's already map-literate far ahead of his peers and even amazed his summer camp teacher!Who says a 3 year old can't learn geography?!;-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
I would have liked more information to be included on the puzzle. Each piece is cut out in the shape of the state and has the state capital printed underneath.I think they could have taken this a step further adding key information about that state such as it's nickname, state flower or other educational information. It is a good way to get very young children to learn their state capitals and the shape and geography of the U.S. ... This looks so cool that Im gonna order some as soon as I get enough money for it!!!!!!I love this!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad product
We got this over two years ago for my daughter when she was 6 months old.We were looking for a mobile that wasn't "traditional."She still loves it and so does her baby sis.Yes, there isn't a sun, but if you look at the proportions, you would need a beach ball for the sun!We hung the planets from differ lengths of fishing line. Our only problem was Jupiter was too low and we kept hitting it.That was easy to fix.Don't forget to put the star stickers on the star tacks. If a tack fall out of the ceiling, you can use a flashlight at night to locate it quickly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
My son recently finished a study of the solar system in his preschool class and was very excited about what he had learned. I searched for several items that I could purchase to both educated him further and that would add a decorative touch to his room. This item did both.I was rather put off by most reviews on the ease, or in most cases lack of ease, of installation. It took me 10 minutes to string up the planets, afix the fish line to the little star tacks and place them in my ceiling. . . a breeze. If the planets are near a light source they glow brightly and into the night. Infact we awoke this morning and they were still faintly glowing. Impressive. As for the stickers, well they are what they are...tiny. I used them on some left over spiderweb from halloween to create the milky way around the planets and the paper mache sun we created and they work fine.I didn't even need a tweezer. Great product!

Tip for installation - tie the string to the planet first in a knot, then tie a loop knot at the other end. Take that and slip it around the nail of the tack and tighten. The star head will keep the knot from sliding off the nail and it will be secure to hold the planets up. If you actually try to tie the fish line around/across the star head it will take hours and will make for a frustrating installation... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal baby shower gift
As a purchaser of the Money Savvy Pig for the past several years I am delighted with the new larger size and the ease at which the money can be taken out when it comes time to transfer the money to the bank or to spend on the goal that the child determined.I buy several at a time to have on hand for baby showers. Most of the other guests want to buy one for their children too.I also used them for Christmas gifts for my neighbor girls who were saving money for their summer camp. I've even had teens ask where they can get one.The Money Savvy Pig is a great tool to share with children during Teach Children to Save Week (scheduled for April 26, 2005).

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to Pig Out
What a great gift for kids!I have 4 boys ages 1-8.They all love their pigs.In addition to helping teach them about money management and budgeting, it makes it fun to save. With the plastic pigs, you can see the money in the pig.The kids love fattening up the pig. Also, this was unintentional, but my 1 year old did a pretty good job stress testing the pig.Let's just say the pig can withstand a 1 year old pounding him on a hard wood floor. The kids love putting stickers on the pig saying what they are saving up for as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great gift to kids - Cute and Functional!

Editorial Review

Educational Insights brings a terrific idea to life in Math Shark, a combination skill-building tool and calculator. The shape, colors, flashing lights, and beeps--all reminiscent of a hand-held electronic game--will appeal to kids who may not otherwise be interested in practicing math. (Parents: the sound is unobtrusive, but can be turned off.) Math Shark offers eight different skill levels and seven skill groupings: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, and percentages. After every question a red or green flashing light and a corresponding beep let you know whether or not you answered correctly. If you get one wrong, the right answer flashes, and the question keeps appearing, along with any others answered incorrectly, until you get it right. After each set an encouraging comment--"You did it!" or "Way to go!"--comes up on the screen. The sets are timed, and your score, based on how long it took to answer all the questions correctly, appears at the end. When practice is done for the day, Math Shark becomes a handy calculator. Requires two AA batteries, not included. --Rachel Radway ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleased Teacher
I ordered 5 math sharks for my inner city classroom. My students were having motivational issues and this really helped.I used it in centers and during indoor recess. You can turn the sound off if your student/child is using it during a quiet time.It tells the student what their score is at the end so they can keep track. My students were at different ability levels and they could choose something that was challenging for them.I did find that by the end of the year, the display was not as clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to keep in the minivan....
Our 6 yr old is enjoying this product. She needs help with getting quicker at drilling addition and subtraction and this is helping. She likes when the green light lights up to tell her she is correct. The levels are very good since my niece (8 yrs), nephew (10 yrs) and the adults have all tried it.If it's durable enough, it should last her for years as she gets to multiplication etc.She doesn't think it's FUN though - it's just something to do when she is bored. For this reason we keep it in the van.Our plan is working though because she climbs into her seat and immediately turns it on.We had it in our home for awhile but there were too many other FUN things to do besides Math! If your child enjoys challenging math facts, they will think it's fun though - our 8 yr old niece did and so do myself and my husband.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good toy for practising math

I knew this game at a friend's house and love it even I was 30 already at that time.I bought several when I went back to visit my family and they all love it.When I told my mom that I would give my brother's 1st grad boy a set, she told me he won't like it since he doesn't like the brain games. But he loves it soon after my sister explain to him the rules and he enjoys to do it.My little one, almost 23 months old now, likes those animals and loves to put all of those animals to the board one by one and kind of learn the size and arrange the place. It's not only for 8 and up.

It may be a grind to wait nearly 30 days to create polished rockjewelry with the Rolling Stones Rock Tumbler. But, as the makerswrite, "you are grinding in days what it takes nature thousands of yearsto do in a stream, river, or ocean." So, find a clean, remote area with aproperly wired outlet where the constant tumblingwon't disturb others (and where curious little hands won't wreak havoc), and start rolling. The first step involves assembling and lubricating thetumbler itself. Once the two-cup, plastic barrel rolls easily atop its10-inch-long and 6-inch-high plastic base, it's time to open the smallbag of gritty stones that comes with the kit. Constant maintenance and much patiencewill reward the owner with shiny stones in about one month. 1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE ITEM!
Me and my brother got this toy for Christmas and our dad said he would help set it up.The day FINALLY came and he helped us.We followed all the directions and it wouldn't work.So we kept trying and trying and trying but finally we gave up.It is now sitting in our basment.PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT spend your money on this.It does not work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A proper review of this item
This is a great little tumbler to polish rocks. If you have no idea about rocks or how this machine works you need to do a little research. This is not the type of item to just buy and expect to polish rocks in a weekends time without even having to read the directions. The tumbler is also recommended for children ten years or older.

To polish rocks properly it will take a solid month of tumbling and is a three step process. This means the tumbler will be running for the entire month. The first step takes about a week, the second about two weeks, with the final step about one week.Between the steps all you have to do is clean out the barrel and the rocks and put back in with new water and the next level of grit/polish.Besides occasionally making sure the tumbler was sealed properly and is in no danger of walking itself off the table it requires no other attention. The tumbler does make some noise tumbling but not a ridicules amount. You obviously can't place it in your bedroom or living room and expect it not to be heard.Placement in a basement or garage is ideal. The power draw is minimal as it only uses .15 amps and 10 watts. Therefore, if you pay 10 cents a kWh, then the amount it will run up your electric bill for a month of constant running is 73 cents.

The instructions that come with the tumbler are also pretty good, but they do need followed. The tumbler is durable but you need to lube two points as indicated in the manual or you will put excess stress on the motor and you will burn it out.The drum seals quite well and easily if you follow the instructions on sealing which requires you to make sure the "O" ring is properly seated and you put a light coating of oil on the rim of the barrel to complete the seal.

Refills for the tumbler are extremely easy to find.Starting with the order form including with the kit where you can order parts, grit, rocks, etc.You can also purchase refill kits at Walmart, Target, and Kmart. There are also dozens of places you can also order refill stuff off the internet.

Overall, this is a great little item but it is not for everyone. If you or your children can't delay immediate gratification, or don't believe in reading/following instructions then this item is not likely for you.If you can't believe the noise it makes because you insisted on setting it up next to your bed, or can't believe that it costs less then a dollar a month to run then this is also not likely for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Educational but SLOW and NOISY
My daughter got this for Christmas. We had no idea it takes nearly a month from start to finish to get polished stones, but I suppose it's a good lesson in patience for a 10 year old. It does not say anything on the box about the wait period, or the fact that the noisy tumbler must be running constantly for the entire time. Fortunately, we have a basement where the tumbler is humming away while not disturbing anyone.I recommend placing the tumbler in the box top it comes in, to avoid "traveling" while the motor runs.

All in all, the toy is certainly educational, but it takes a LOOOONG time to get results, and is not for folks who live in close quarters. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Furrowed brows and hearty laughter are the most likely outcome of this fun but challenging game from Game Development Group. Just like its elder edition, the object of Stare! Junior is to be the first to reach the end of the game board. "Been there, done that," you're thinking? But in this game, looking hard and paying attention to detail are two things that will help players move forward. Individuals or teams stare at an image on a card for 30 seconds (more challenging games can be played by shortening the time) and then answer questions about what they saw. It's not easy--just try to remember what color socks the person next to you on the bus was wearing this morning, or how many people were reading magazines. Of course, you weren't staring... --Rachel Radway ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, a terrific game for the kids (and parents)!

Stare! Junior is simply a terrific game for the kids. It's fun, it's educational (without the kid's knowing it); it's interesting; and it is a great social activity.During each kid's turn, the child stares at an image to study as much detail as they can recall. Then, when time is up, the child is asked a series of questions about the image. For instance, what is in the teddy bears hand? The Images are just terrific and fun to look at.We take this one in the car on long trips - the kids play and I keep track of how far they advance on the game board.Really, you will be happy you have this.No gimmicks, just good old-fashion game play, with laughs and learning thrown in for good measure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A game kids and parents can have fun playing with together

I play lots of games with my kids.I can't say I am always wide awake playing Candy Land and Life over and over again. That has all changed with this game.

Stare! Junior changes the playing field.I actually enjoy playing it and my kids can tell that. The object is simple but challenging. Each turn a player (or team) stares at an image card. The cards are a great array of child friendly pictures. The cards have just enough detail to make it interesting for the kids, but not too much to make it frustrating. When time is up, the player is asked to recall certain aspects about the image. Was the hat red or green? Was the boy smiling? How many apples where on the table? The more the player recalls, the more the player advances his/her playing pawn on the game board.

The kids have fun and so do I.Go figure!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but the game is just ok.
I purchased this game for my 5 year old. The idea of the game is to stare at a tiny card with tons of details. Then you are asked to remember some obscure detail about the picture. It is even hard to answer some of the questions when you are looking at the pictures. If you are looking for an educational game, look somewhere else.Your child might learn to pay more attention to details, but I can't think of any other educational value.I don't see what is so stimulating about Superman comic pictures (22 in all), and I like Norman Rockwell but 30 pictures seems over kill. ... This magnetic calendar is undated, so it can be reusedmonth after month, year after year. Use the month magnets to identify themonth, and then stick the magnetic numbers on the appropriate days ofthe week. Hinged panels fold out for hanging--the top half is acalendar, the bottom half is a blank white magnetic surface for storingmonth and year magnets and the colorfully illustrated "reminder"pieces. There's one for every occasion you can think of, so you'llnever miss an important date or activity--Test Day, Mother's Day,Canada Day, Kwanzaa, Go To Dentist, and so on. Consisting of 139pieces, the calendar measures 15.5 by 23 inches unfolded. --AlisonGolder ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this company!
I purchased this calendar for both of my girls (7 and 4).Like others, they both love this calendar and we update them together each month. The comment that I wanted to add was that soon after purchasing calendar #2, our dog chewed up several of the numbers.I attempted to repair the mangled numbers without luck.I resigned myself to the fact that daughter #2 would just have to do without numbers 28 and 14.When hanging the calendar up the other day, I noticed a toll-free number on the back for the company. When I called I found out that you can receive an complete set of all the magnets (numbers, months and holidays) for $5 an they'd ship them for free. They also included the most updated years through 2010!What a great company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product (A+)
I purchased this calendar for my 3 year old and both he and his sister (2 yrs. old) totally love it.Both my kids truly enjoy learning the days, months, seasons and various events (every Sunday we get together and "plan" our following week). My son loves it sooo much that now I am buying it as a birthday present for all of my son's friends and cousins (cannot beat the price !!).<br /> My only two suggestions to the manufacturer will be to make the daily squares a bit bigger and to make additional magnetic buttons available as a separate kit.<br /> This product definately gets an A+ from me !!

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Idea!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to learn about Electricity without *wires* !
Outstanding game which *grows* with your child -- as you can upgrade the kit. Projects range from simple to complex. Snapping connections is easy for the kids. Just as an example, my child quickly picked up the concepts of "switches" once he assembly the first few projects. Also helps in troubleshooting -- what is the diff bet. a open and closed circuit ?

Only "con" -- wish there was more details about the project and how does it work. Many project are variations of a "base" project. Say -- substitute bulb with the Motor.

As an enhancement it will be very cool to have small LEDs on the connections showing the flow of electricity !!

Overall a must have science kit for children ! You won't waste your money on this one !

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It - Your children and you will love it!
I found this item to be EXACTLY what my soon to be 6 yr old son (March '05) needed. My wife and I gave it to our son for Christmas this year and he cannot put it down. The illustrations for assembly are accurate, the projects all work like they are supposed to and it allows him to customize some of these experiments to suit his needs. In addition, he can use these components to build his own creations without the use of the included instruction books.

Granted, our son has been fasinated with wires, electric and electronic stuff since he was very young, so these sets provide the outlet, instructions and materials to help him develope his understanding better. The box suggests 8 yrs old, but children around 6 yrs old can safetly put these together with minimal help from the parents.

[...]

As a added bonus, parts are available at a VERY REASONABLE cost, should the need arise, directly from the manufacturer. It appears to me that the company is genuinely interested in promoting the understanding of electronic circuity rather that generating excessive profits on junk "educational/learning" toys.

Would I recommend this toy to other parents whose children seem a little bit interested in electronics - YES!If your child doesn't grab ahold and grasp this set at first - WAIT, they will! The fascination with building electric circuits will be soon and the toy will then be picked up and used.

Buy it - if not for you, then for your children - they'll love the voice recorder, alarms, bells, whistles, motor, LED's, AM/FM radio, etc., etc., etc.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal toy for an 8 year old boy
My 8 year old son really enjoys this toy, which was on his Christmas list this year.He takes great pride in assembling the various parts and feels an enormous sense of accomplishment when he successfully completes a project.Snap circuit is ideal in the sense that it facilitates parental involvement in unobtrusive educational instruction. This toy is definitely a start in the right direction for kids who are technically inclined; have the capacity and ability to troubleshoot and analyze schematics.

Editorial Review

Nothing nurtures a child's interest in the natural world like first hand experience. This lightweight, ventilated plastic environment allows your children to observe the fascinating world of insects on their own terms. Once captured and placed in their new "home", bugs are encouraged to explore their new plastic environment which includes a waterfall, vegetation, play hut and a small hill. A moveable magnifier and insect chart encourages budding entomologists to be scientific in their investigations. The entire clear plastic dome opens completely for easy release and cleaning.--Deb Oroszlan ... Read more

magic school bus may be a little young for the
quantum age group, but the imformation is excellent, informative
and educational even for the parents

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Leappad book my kids have.
Have had this book about 4 weeks. My kids, 7 and just 5, boys, can rattle off so many facts and figures about the solar system after playing with this book it is incredible.
They understand them too, it is not just parrot fashion. They can both name all the planets, tell you things about them and they just love this title. None of their other leap pad books get a look in. And its aimed at 3rd grade - my oldest is in 2nd and youngest the year before 1st. It's brilliant and I hope they release more magic school bus leappad/quantum titles.
