Editorial Review That cute little squishy guy is back in all his pastel glory tosweeten up 2-D life on the Nintendo 64. With 3-D games such asPerfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64 getting the bulk ofattention among consumers, Kirby 64 provides a fun change of pace for bothyoung and experienced gamers who don't necessarily need all threedimensions to have fun. Young gamers will love the bright, colorful graphics in this game, which is 2-D with some 3-D foreground and background elements. Kirby isjoined by plenty of friends who will aid in his quest to recover thepieces of an important shattered crystal. While the levels are a bit too easy for older gamers, the gameplay inKirby 64 is original enough to entertain all ages. Kirbystill has an appetite for enemies, sucking them up and spitting themout, but he can also swallow them, inheriting abilities such as fireand cutter. Also, Kirby can now combine enemy powers, often withhilarious results. For instance, electricity plus stone turns Kirbyinto an electrifying little light bulb. Sure, you don't need to use allthese powers, but they're still fun to play with. --Robb Guido Pros:

Editorial Review Mario's illustrious career has earned the fella the right to relax, so it's no surprise that virtual golfers can now join him on the links... Mario style, of course. In Mario Golf, players join the star and his usual posse--Luigi, Pyoshi, Wario, Princess Peach, and Baby Mario, among others--on six themed courses, each with unique obstacles and landmarks recognizable from Mario's previous ventures. Despite one's expectations of a cartoonish "golf light" experience, the gameplay is actually on par with many serious golf simulations and is undeniably the best golf game for the Nintendo 64. The game is equally balanced for pros and amateurs alike. Seasoned virtual golfers and perfectionists can choose a club, adjust the golfer's stance, gauge the wind direction, and apply a variety of spins to the ball. Casual golfers can let the computer caddy pick the best club and line up the golfer, and then simply swing away. A variety of 10 classic and cleverly original game modes are available. Among the more interesting challenges are ring shot, requiring players to land shots through floating rings, and mini golf, complete with banked walls and ramps. In addition to the traditional tournament, skins, and match modes, golfers can play speed golf, requiring players to finish a round of golf as quickly as possible. --Eric Twelker Pros:

With Mario Golf, the game consists of the start of four golfers, including Baby Mario, Peach, and a couple of others. Throughout the game, you can access the Get Character mode, which can help you challenge other characters like Mario, Bowser, and Yoshi. Once you win the character, you also need them, the harder the challenger in the round. It is also important in the Tournament mode, where you can also earn enough points toward newer golf courses and challenging holes in the process. Each course reflecting on the cute, Mario Brothers themed style, which makes it appealing to all ages old and young, where the other games don't seem to have that sense of enjoyment. Although Nintendo stopped making games for the Nintendo 64, Mario Golf is only one of the very few sports games I highly recommend for the system. Although many people might not see the review, because of the newer game system reviews and newer games of the Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Video Games

Editorial Review Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA is the follow-up to the populararcade-turned-platform-game San Francisco Rush, offering the signaturerambunctious gameplay of the original with several welcomed new features. No longerlimited to zipping through the streets of San Francisco, drivers plow through expresstours of Seattle, New York (uptown and midtown), Los Angeles, Las Vegas, andHonolulu, among other tracks. An addictive new feature is a stunt track, where playersrack up points by performing spectacular jumps, in-air spins, flips, and loops. Ever seenskaters frolicking about at a skateboard park? Think bigger park with frolicking one-tonvehicles. Not the prettiest sight, but so much fun. Obviously, this is a far cry from the traditional auto racing game. Rush 2 is anall-out, full-throttle action racer, with cars careening through shortcuts, performinggravity-defying leaps, and, occasionally, actually racing down the main track. One coolfeature (and slight annoyance): collecting keys and cans of a trademarkedhyper-caffeinated soft drink--carefully placed on the track by cunning marketingexecutives--opens new areas, offers new vehicles, and provides cheats. --EricTwelker Pros:

The 1998 video game was made exclusively for the Nintendo 64, and not upon any other console. Ironically, the prequel, San Fransisco Rush, was made on both the N64, and the Playstation. The game features many exciting and enduring automobiles through the streets of some of the biggest cities in America, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. The game also includes the infamous Alcatraz prison, a hidden course from the previous Rush. Many fans were shocked to know why the game wasn't on any of the other consoles at the time. The sales for the Playstation version of Rush were just awful, and Midway chose to put this only on Nintendo 64. While many people stopped purchasing Nintendo 64 games, Rush 2 remains as an absolute delight for any racer in the world. If you're looking for a reved up time, Rush 2 is that game for you.

Editorial Review Nintendo 64 owners have been patiently waiting for a decentrole-playinggame, and, at long last, one has arrived in the form of the perplexingPaperMario. World-famous video game icon Mario stars in this unconventionalRPG,which was originally announced as Super Mario RPG 2. Don't be fooled by the cutesy visual exterior of this game, which borrowsheavily from the well-established Mario universe. Yep... it's the same lovableMario who dons his familiar red overalls and unkempt moustache. However, thecatch is that Mario now stubbornly appears as a two-dimensionalcharacter--despite the largely 3-D exterior gaming environments that surroundhim. When ourflat-headed friend turns around, his paper-thin presence becomes immediatelyapparent. It's a cool gimmick, but fortunately Paper Mario is far fromacut-and-paste cartoon caper. As with most RPG titles, players must battle with several menacing enemies asthey travel from place to place on their quest. Each encounter requires gamersto strategically choose between various modes of attack. For example, Mario isparticularly handy with the hammer--thus you might opt to select hishangover-inducing hammer attack. As the adventure progresses, additionalcharacters willjoin your quest. Your ever-growing posse gives you more fighting power, aseachteam member brings new attack moves and powers worth mastering. To advancewithin the game, you'll need to pay close attention to your health meter, enemyhit points, and your ever-expanding attack options. The game starts withenemiesthat are easy to defeat, but it quickly becomes quite difficult to survivesubsequent attacks without careful planning. Unlike most RPG games, each attack sequence is enhanced by a special actionfunction. Instead of passively sitting back and watching each attack moveoccur, the player can enhance your attack by pressing a button or moving thedirectional controller at precisely the right time. As someone who has rackedupseveral hours (and more than a few snoozes) during repetitious RPG attacksequences, the action feature is a welcome addition to break up the monotonyofmultiple attacks. Fans of the traditional Mario games will appreciate the return of familiarcharacters, such as Princess Peach and Luigi. Perpetual baddie Bowser evenplaysa key role in this addictive adventure. Best of all, there are plenty ofhiddenareas and extras to uncover. Paper Mario may boast elements of theclassic platform gaming genre, as well as the traditional RPG--but itultimatelycuts through all expectations to deliver an experience that appeals to bothcasual and hard-core gamers. --Brett Atwood Pros:

Editorial Review WCW/nWo Revenge improves on its predecessor, WCW vs. nWoWorld Tour, in almost every way. First, the graphics have improved so that thecharacters are very lifelike and the fights are a bit more realistic. You will also see a hugeroster of familiar faces and pay-per-view backdrops such as Starrcade, Superbrawl, andHalloween Havoc. Unfortunately, the sound has not improved, leaving you with just theoohs and ahhs of the crowd plus the WCW Nitro theme. Sorry, no commentary. The gameplay is very similar to WCW vs. nWo World Tour except that timinghas become much more important--you don't just pound the buttons for special moves. There are several game modes, including challenges for all WCW belts (some areavailable only after you unlock them), battle royal, handicapped matches, and exhibitionmatches. Furthermore, winning belts will unlock other wrestlers such as Kidman, RowdyRoddy Piper, and Curt Hennig. Although there is room for improvement, WCW/nWo fans will enjoyWCW/nWo Revenge. --Hugh Arnold Pros:

Editorial Review Unlike his many 2-D platform-style shooting games of yore, Mega Man'sfirst N64 game looks similar to the 3-D style of the newer Zelda games. In fact, this basically is a port of Mega Man Legends for the PSX. The arcade blasting has been sprinkled with a little RPG drama. Deep in thegame, there are huge areas to explore, items to discover, and people with whomto engage in somewhat childlike conversation. There's also a ton of handy-dandyweapons and moves to use against the game's bigger bosses. Sadly, the graphics are way too PlayStation-like. The borderline-primitive leveland character designs are extremely bland, and display little attempt to makeuse of the N64's graphics power. Also, there's an occasional problem withoperating the camera to track enemies. Mega Man 64's somewhat interesting, if goofy, story line mitigates thegame's lackluster look, but it won't satisfy gamers who are looking for deepplots or engaging characters. No, it's not the same Mega Man that many gamersknow and love; but, for video game newbies and casual game fans, that's not sucha bad thing. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Editorial Review Every good game deserves a sequel, and the addictive, quirky Mario Party 2 certainlyfills the bill. This multiplayer party title combines the gameplay of a traditional dice-based board game withseveral brief action-game segments, including updated versions of 20 of the best offerings from the originalMario Party. There are also 44 entirely new mini-game challenges that pit players against eachother as they compete to collect the most stars. Owners of the original Mario Party will be comfortable with this game from the get-go. Eachplayer rolls a virtual die to advance through various board games, including pirate land, western land, spaceland, mystery land, and horror land. Several hidden adventure boards can be unlocked as players advancethrough the game. Each player aims to gain the most stars and become a superstar at the end of the game.Various mini-game challenges and booby traps await gamers as they land on some strategically placedspaces on the board. While Mario Party 2 can be played as a single-player game (against three computer opponents), thistitle really shines in social situations. This is the perfect game to pull out at parties--assuming you have afew extra controllers in the house. --Brett Atwood Pros:

With Crus'n World, released in late 1998, it contains a start of 12 cars battaling through 14 outrageous courses, from England, all the way to Hawaii. That is not all, there is even more at stake when it comes to these rolls. There is also championship mode, where you can try to earn points for faster speed in the automobiles, a very special Speed Demon, and custom packaging with color designs. But it doesn't stop there. There is as usual Crus'n mode, where you can access some of the greatest courses ever, including a special course that sets you on the Moon. There is also the unbelieveable, practice mode, where you can try maxing out the time of the certain time, and gain access to hidden automobiles, 12 of them. Unfortunately, a lot of people aren;t interested in Crus'n World anytime right now, largely because of the Gamecube and Xbox and Playstation 2 games out there. Nevertheless, if you really want the rubber to burn, give this game a try. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Video Games

Pros: 1. Sweet Graphics Cons: 1. needs memory card in order to save 1. Stunt mode and more! Stunt: In stunt mode, you get four tracks to do corkscrews, endoes, twists turns, flips-every trick in the world! The wing feature also allows you to glide through the air-and do major awsome stunts easier! Sweet! (available in 1player mode, also) Battle: In battle mode, you get 8 awsome futuristic arenas with sweet weapons: 1. CHAINGUN-Everyone's favorite, just shoot this automatic weapon and blow your opponent's head off! 2. RIFLE-This is your default weapon. It is bad, but you could give him some damage. 3. ROCKET LAUNCHER-Yeah. Shoots 20-50 rockets that could do quite some damage. Explosion sounds are awsome. 4. TORPEDO LAUNCHER-One of the best weapons. Only 3, but once fired, they follow the opponent-like, if he turns, it turns. One hit for this baby and your opponent is roadkill. 5. FASER-THINGY-I don't know what this thing is-either a plasma gun or a technical green bullet thingy or something else. It shoots green liquid-I don't know. Just play the game and you'll see. 6. MINE LAYER-Lays mines-one hit and kablamo! 7. BLAST SHOCKWAVE GUN-This thing, when you pick it up, goes on top of your car. When you fire it, it makes a shockwave (air too) that travels and knocks over or kills any car within a 20 foot radius. Pretty awsome. Cool. 8. NUCLEAR RAMMER-This weapon is hard to use-but could also be a shield and exterminates an opponent with one hit. It is like a mini-sattelite that fits in the front of your car. When you ram into someone with it, it blows them up. Also, if someone is in front of you and fires a torpedo or rocket or something, the rammer absorbs the stinking hit! (But only if in front or the direction pointed in) I think I covered all of the weapons and here are the powers you pick up in battle mode. WRENCH-Gives you maximum health; gives all your health back SHIELD-Shields you for about three to five minutes INVISIBILITY-Makes you invisible for two minutes That's the powerups. Now, what is good about single races is that you can customize the track-make it backwords, mirror it, increse wind, and increase amount of fog. This game is awsome-and you must buy it. I recomend it for everyone. IT'S AWSOME! BUY IT!
As a package, SFR2049 is one of the best arcade conversions ever -- plus a lot more for the home player. The programmer, Ed Logg, is a prince of the arcades. His previous games include Asteroids, Centipede, Gauntlet, Steel Talons, Hard Drivin', and the original San Francisco Rush.I'd love to see more of this kind of work on the more recent consoles. ... Editorial Review Scientists have successfully cloned frogs and sheep, but Crave Entertainment has successfully cloned Austin Powers' personality into a colorful little gecko named Gex. First introduced in Gex: Enter the Gecko, the sophisticated lizard is back in a new adventure in which he must rescue his partner, X-Tra (Baywatch's own Marliece Andrada), from his archenemy Raz. To save his partner, Gex must complete specific missions in cheesy television worlds in order to acquire remote controls, which allow him to transport to the next television world until he meets Raz in a final showdown. Dispersed throughout the main plot are minigames to keep you on your toes, and, of course, there is Dana Gould with his witty one-liners. Although the graphics are fairly good, there is a little jerkiness and at times depth perception is a bit tricky, making some maneuvers extremely difficult to judge. This aside, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko is a good game, designed for the younger crowd but also fun for adults. --Hugh Arnold Pros:
