Editorial Review That cute little squishy guy is back in all his pastel glory tosweeten up 2-D life on the Nintendo 64. With 3-D games such asPerfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64 getting the bulk ofattention among consumers, Kirby 64 provides a fun change of pace for bothyoung and experienced gamers who don't necessarily need all threedimensions to have fun. Young gamers will love the bright, colorful graphics in this game, which is 2-D with some 3-D foreground and background elements. Kirby isjoined by plenty of friends who will aid in his quest to recover thepieces of an important shattered crystal. While the levels are a bit too easy for older gamers, the gameplay inKirby 64 is original enough to entertain all ages. Kirbystill has an appetite for enemies, sucking them up and spitting themout, but he can also swallow them, inheriting abilities such as fireand cutter. Also, Kirby can now combine enemy powers, often withhilarious results. For instance, electricity plus stone turns Kirbyinto an electrifying little light bulb. Sure, you don't need to use allthese powers, but they're still fun to play with. --Robb Guido Pros:

The Rumble Pack was introduced along side Starfox 64. When you get shot, hit someone, get hit, explosions, and many other actions will cause your controller to shake. It makes game playing a lot more fun. It's great in a football game where your sizing a guy up for a hit, you do it and then you feel the rumble. The controller will shake more if it's a harder impact. Lots of fun. There are some cons. You have to use batteries and you have to take it out to put your memory pack in. To me the cons don't come close to the pros and fun of the controller. If you have an N64 you must own a Rumble Pack. You won't regret it.

Editorial Review Every good game deserves a sequel, and the addictive, quirky Mario Party 2 certainlyfills the bill. This multiplayer party title combines the gameplay of a traditional dice-based board game withseveral brief action-game segments, including updated versions of 20 of the best offerings from the originalMario Party. There are also 44 entirely new mini-game challenges that pit players against eachother as they compete to collect the most stars. Owners of the original Mario Party will be comfortable with this game from the get-go. Eachplayer rolls a virtual die to advance through various board games, including pirate land, western land, spaceland, mystery land, and horror land. Several hidden adventure boards can be unlocked as players advancethrough the game. Each player aims to gain the most stars and become a superstar at the end of the game.Various mini-game challenges and booby traps await gamers as they land on some strategically placedspaces on the board. While Mario Party 2 can be played as a single-player game (against three computer opponents), thistitle really shines in social situations. This is the perfect game to pull out at parties--assuming you have afew extra controllers in the house. --Brett Atwood Pros:

Editorial Review Mario's illustrious career has earned the fella the right to relax, so it's no surprise that virtual golfers can now join him on the links... Mario style, of course. In Mario Golf, players join the star and his usual posse--Luigi, Pyoshi, Wario, Princess Peach, and Baby Mario, among others--on six themed courses, each with unique obstacles and landmarks recognizable from Mario's previous ventures. Despite one's expectations of a cartoonish "golf light" experience, the gameplay is actually on par with many serious golf simulations and is undeniably the best golf game for the Nintendo 64. The game is equally balanced for pros and amateurs alike. Seasoned virtual golfers and perfectionists can choose a club, adjust the golfer's stance, gauge the wind direction, and apply a variety of spins to the ball. Casual golfers can let the computer caddy pick the best club and line up the golfer, and then simply swing away. A variety of 10 classic and cleverly original game modes are available. Among the more interesting challenges are ring shot, requiring players to land shots through floating rings, and mini golf, complete with banked walls and ramps. In addition to the traditional tournament, skins, and match modes, golfers can play speed golf, requiring players to finish a round of golf as quickly as possible. --Eric Twelker Pros:

With Mario Golf, the game consists of the start of four golfers, including Baby Mario, Peach, and a couple of others. Throughout the game, you can access the Get Character mode, which can help you challenge other characters like Mario, Bowser, and Yoshi. Once you win the character, you also need them, the harder the challenger in the round. It is also important in the Tournament mode, where you can also earn enough points toward newer golf courses and challenging holes in the process. Each course reflecting on the cute, Mario Brothers themed style, which makes it appealing to all ages old and young, where the other games don't seem to have that sense of enjoyment. Although Nintendo stopped making games for the Nintendo 64, Mario Golf is only one of the very few sports games I highly recommend for the system. Although many people might not see the review, because of the newer game system reviews and newer games of the Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Video Games

Editorial Review It is a time soon after the destruction of the first Death Star. Luke Skywalker has formed a squadron of hot-shot pilots to engage the still-formidable Imperial forces. You, as Luke, must lead this rogue squadron in a series of galaxy-spanning raids and rescues. To complete all your missions, you'll need good flying skills, fast reflexes, a keen eye, and a quick trigger finger. You get to fly all your favorite ships: The X-wing, Y-wing, snowspeeder--even the Millennium Falcon. There are also some "secret" ships, such as the sleek Naboo Starfighterfrom Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, a TIE interceptor, and, um, a '78 Buick. The flight simulation in this game is first-rate. You'll find yourself leaning to the side as you pull a high-G turn in pursuit of Imperial TIE fighters. And the outstanding graphics and sounds are realistic enough to transport you to the Star Wars universe. Every detail is in place, right down to the individual Stormtroopers you can see running around (and trying to shoot you). One of the more impressive sequences lets you bring down Imperial Walkers by using the tow cables on your snowspeeder. Nice touch. This is a single-player game, but you start each mission with a few wingmen from your squadron, and the well-done spoken dialogue between pilots and commanders really makes you feel like part of a team. The only significant shortcoming is the lack of a cooperative multiplayer option. With its excellent gameplay, varied environments, and interesting missions, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is sure to become a long-time favorite. --Eric Fredrickson Pros:

Editorial Review As with just about anything brandishing the Pokémon name,Pokémon Stadium is a must-have for any Pokémaniac. But thistitle is especially geared towards owners of Pokémon Red,Pokémon Blue, or Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy.Using the same battle system as the Game Boy games--think highly advancedrock-paper-scissors--Pokémon Stadium allows players to entertheir Pokémon in a variety of tournaments and other battle modes, allfeaturing vibrant 3-D graphics and animation, as well as enhanced sounds andannouncer commentary. Using the included Transfer Pak, players can use their ownPokémon from Game Boy Game Paks, or they can choose from a pool ofrental Pokémon. Pokémon Stadium isn't all battles, though. The Kids Club modefeatures nine cutesy minigames that make for great multiplayer fun for all ages.Gallery mode lets players take snapshots of Pokémon (similar toPokémon Snap), which can then be printed out as stickers at yourlocal Pokémon Snap station. While Pokémon Stadium doesn't require that you already have anyGame Boy version of Pokémon, players won't be able to access twoof the best features of the game without one. Pokémon Lab allows playersto view, store, and better organize the data on their Game Paks, as well astrade Pokémon with another player (which requires an additional TransferPak, sold separately). GB Tower allows gamers to play their Game BoyPokémon cartridge on the Nintendo 64. --Joe Hon Pros:

Editorial Review Although it's geared more for younger players, PokémonSnap is good clean fun for Pokémon fans of any age. In thisPokémon battle-free adventure, players assist Professor Oak in completinghis Pokémon Report by photographing the cute little buggers in the wildon Pokémon Island. Players take a trolley-like ride through the island's3-D environments, filled with Pokémon that not only look just like theydo in the cartoons, but also have "cries" to match. While there's a limitedamount of film for each trip and no zoom lens, players enjoy great freedom ofdirectional movement from within the vehicle, thanks to solid controls. Pokémon Snap isn't as easy as it looks, as not just any old picturewill satisfy Professor Oak; submissions for his Pokémon Report are judgedon size, pose, technique, and whether or not there's more than one of the samePokémon in the picture. As progress is made, new areas open up, andplayers are given items to aid them in their quest. Although there are onlyseven areas, they need to be revisited often, as hidden and otherwiseuncooperative Pokémon must be "coaxed" by using items that you previouslydidn't have before. Also, Pokémon will do some of the craziestthings--which make for great photographs--but only under certain conditions that requiremuch experimentation (or a strategy guide) to unearth. --Joe Hon Pros:

Editorial Review Video games don't get much cuter than Hey You, Pikachu!, a Pokémon title that allows players to talk to their favoriteelectric mouse--via the Voice Recognition Unit (VRU) that's included--and sharein its day-to-day adventures. While older Pokémon fans might findthe game too childish, the candy-coated goodness that's found here makes itperfect for the kiddies. With the abstract goal of building a friendship with Pikachu, playerscommunicate with it by speaking certain keywords and phrases into the VRU'smicrophone. Although Pikachu's speech is limited to variations on its own name(e.g., "Pika! Pika!"), it expresses itself through thought bubbles and thegame's adorably animated 3-D graphics. Mastering this interaction is key to solving Hey You, Pikachu!'s puzzleelements, which are encapsulated in various squeaky-clean activities in whichyou and Pikachu participate together. While the voice recognition here isn'tperfect by any means, there's plenty of on-screen help and guidance to keepplayers from getting too frustrated. --Joe Hon Pros:

Editorial Review Considering the success Rare's GoldenEye 007 has had onthe Nintendo 64, Electronic Arts designers had their work cut out forthem in making another 3-D shooter using the James Bond license. TheWorld Is Not Enough is a smashing success in terms of its graphicsand sound, as well as in how it weaves the movie's plot into thegameplay. Unfortunately, this Bond game has just enough flaws to keepit from achieving classic status. If you've seen the movie on which this is based, the game's levels willall be familiar. There has been a kidnapping and it's up to you toscour the globe, rescue the victim, and untangle a twisty plot lacedwith betrayal. It wouldn't be a Bond game without myriad gadgets tohelp you along the way, so there's plenty of stuff to play with, including a multifunction laser/stun gun/grappling hook watch, safecracking equipment, and x-ray glasses. Weapons range from Bond'ssignature 9 mm automatic to shotguns, assault rifles, and everything inbetween. The game takes full advantage of the N64 Expansion Pak to pumpup the graphics, and the game uses speech compression to give all thecharacters spoken dialogue. This makes the missions far more engagingthan they would otherwise be, but brain-dead enemies really spoil thefun. The average Bond movie henchmen don't exactly have Einstein- caliber IQs, but shooting wave after excruciating wave of soldiers whodo little more than blindly rush at you is just tedious. At least mostmissions throw innocent guards and bystanders into the mix so that evenif the enemy isn't thinking clearly, you still have to be on your toesto prevent civilian casualties. The World Is Not Enough is asolid game that should appeal to fans of the movie, but stick withGoldenEye 007 or Perfect Dark if you want to experience atruly good 3-D shooter on the N64. --T. Editorial Review Unlike his many 2-D platform-style shooting games of yore, Mega Man'sfirst N64 game looks similar to the 3-D style of the newer Zelda games. In fact, this basically is a port of Mega Man Legends for the PSX. The arcade blasting has been sprinkled with a little RPG drama. Deep in thegame, there are huge areas to explore, items to discover, and people with whomto engage in somewhat childlike conversation. There's also a ton of handy-dandyweapons and moves to use against the game's bigger bosses. Sadly, the graphics are way too PlayStation-like. The borderline-primitive leveland character designs are extremely bland, and display little attempt to makeuse of the N64's graphics power. Also, there's an occasional problem withoperating the camera to track enemies. Mega Man 64's somewhat interesting, if goofy, story line mitigates thegame's lackluster look, but it won't satisfy gamers who are looking for deepplots or engaging characters. No, it's not the same Mega Man that many gamersknow and love; but, for video game newbies and casual game fans, that's not sucha bad thing. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Editorial Review Back in the early 1990s, after the world had gone mad for Tetris, Nintendo put out its own variant of the puzzle game that, unlike most clones of the day, actually brought some new life to the original idea. Now the classic Nintendo game, with some improvements of its own, is reintroduced for the Nintendo 64. Rather than just twisting shapes to fill vacant spaces, Dr. Mario 64 will have you matching capsule-shaped pills to fight like-colored viruses.
