4-0 out of 5 stars Only one negative comment. . .
It's a GREAT skills puzzle! However, it doesn't fit in the puzzle holder made by the same company. All our others do and this one sits on tops. . .rather unfortunate.

1-0 out of 5 stars CHOKING HAZZARD!!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS PUZZLE FOR YOUR CHILD! MY DAUGHTER HAD THESE PUZZLE AND THE SCREWS HOLDING THE ITEMS TO THE WOOD BOARD COME APART. THEY ARE VERY SMALL SCREWS AND NUTS THAT I ACTUALLY FOUND IN MY DAUGHTERS MOUTH. I CONTACTED COMSUMERS AFFAIRS LAST YEAR ABOUT THIS PUZZLE AND I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT IS STILL ON THE MARKET. I AM ONLY WRITTING THIS SO THAT AS A PARENT YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO GO TO THE SCARE I DID.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Melissa & Doug" toys are wonderful
In earlier reviews, I see that one familiy had problems with this puzzle, but I think that must have been an anomaly. We have 10 or more "Melissa and Doug" puzzles, and I think that they are the best.

I have a daughter that has significant motor delays, and these puzzles are unique, attractive and challenging for her. They provide just the right level of difficulty that is not overwhelming and keeps her engaged. Our other daughter has spent a lot of time with them as well.

Clearly, all special ed classrooms should have this and other "Melissa & Doug" toys.I think that they are great for everyone else, too!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew learning could be fun?!!
I am so glad that I purchased this puzzle for my niece and nephew (ages 3 and 6).They love it!After they put it together, they ask a lot of questions about the states. Then they want to take it apart and do put it back together again! To be honest, I was very suprised that the 3 year old sat down long enough to help put it together (His attention span is short). This puzzle definitely is definitely a must for young kids.

On a side note, a reviewer stated that their puzzle had the Twin Towers in it.I got my puzzle about a month ago and mine has a picture of the Statue of Liberty, so perhaps the one I got was from a newer line.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a great learning puzzle
My 4 year old nephew just loves this puzzle! It's the best! The large pieces make it easy for him to manueuver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Puzzle
We got this puzzle for our 3 kids last Christmas. It is big, bright, sturdy and very educational...even for me! Of course the first thing we noticed was the picture of the Twin Towers over New York. (Not sure if they are still making them like that)This is something I will keep forever, and that my kids will continue learning from for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift that keeps on giving...
We bought this for our youngest son last Christmas. He is now 2 1/2 years old and still plays with it almost every day.It is very well made, and very reasonably priced. In the beginning, we had to sit with our son to show him how to put the train back together, but now he's a pro. This is a toy we'll be pulling out for a grandchildren in the years to come, as long as he doesn't feed any of the blocks to our dog!!I highly recommend this toy; it gets more "play time" than our leappad, lego table or Vtech toys.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ours fell apart
The entire stacking train fell apart within a month of arriving in our household. My children are not rough on toys, but the wheels came off the train with normal use. My mother threw out the packagaing before we ever saw it, so I have no idea how the train is supposed to fit together (we guestimated) but even so, once the wheels were off, my children were not interested. I have a three-year-old who loves puzzles and is very proficient at them, which would seem to make her the ideal recipient of this toy. She didn't enjoy it, however. The concept behind the toy is okay, however, and if the wheels had stayed on, maybe the kids might have warmed up to it eventually.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save the picture!
Well we just got rid of the first set I bought at Big Lots when my son got a second set for his birthday. He seems to more into now than last Christmas and I saved the picture that came with it so that *I* can remember how it goes together.I think it's a little frustrating because the pieces HAVE to go just *SO* to make it fit properly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Puzzle Rack for All Those Peg Puzzles
I originally purchased the wire puzzle rack by Melissa and Doug only to discover it didn't work for my toddler's peg puzzles. Then I found this racks. It is perfect!!!We love this puzzle rack for the following reasons.

1.It is one of the only racks on the market that will hold peg puzzles with the small pegs.

2.It hold twelve puzzle - more than your toddler will ever need.

3.It also works for traditional wood puzzles so as your child switches from one type to puzzle to another, your puzzle rack doesn't become obsolete.

4.It is sturdy and holds up to daily use by my active (and rough) toddler boy.

5.It is easy for toddler to remove and replace puzzles on his or her own.Especially nice if your toddler is in the "me do" stage of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it
I hated to pay $30 for an empty puzzle case - I wished I'd just bought a "loaded" case for almost the same price. But we already had a variety of puzzles that we like, so I bought this (in natural). It's worth it. It is lovely and very well made. It fits all kinds of puzzles - even our huge oversized ones which I never expected to fit. It's much easier for our 21-month-old to access her puzzles and she's using them more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great storage for yourwooden puzzles

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining
My 3 year old grandson and I have put this puzzle together many times, and he hasn't gotten tired of it yet after 3 months of play.At first I had to do a lot of it for him, but he is beginning to do it on his own with a little help from Grandma. The color is great and it is very durable. We like the thick and chunky pieces.I just bought two more Melissa & Doug puzzles recently, because I was impressed with this puzzle.I'm sure my grandson will enjoy the T-Rex puzzle as much as this one, and I know he will be playing with these puzzles for a long time.A satisfied customer.Faribault,MN

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably Better for Slightly Older Kiddos
This puzzle is really beautiful and well constructed, but a couple of it's attributes make it a bit frustrating for the younger crowd (Amazon says 3+, the sticker on the back of the puzzle says 4+).

My little guy is 3 and his favorite activity is putting puzzles together. The little 25-30 piece puzzles have become too easy for him, so I got this one with 48 pieces.I've been teaching him to put puzzle pieces together gently (rather than mashing and beating them together as rough and tumble boys sometimes tend to do) so that he doesn't bend up the cardboard pieces.I explain to him that if he has the correct two pieces, they will go together easily. This puzzle, however, is constructed of wood and is thicker than typical puzzles, so the pieces don't just slide together. They do fit well together, but you have to line them up well and use a bit more pressure than usual, so he often thinks he has the wrong piece when he actually has the right one. This is frustrating for him.

My other issue with this puzzle is the lack of a picture to go by.I expect it is good memory practice for older kids to see the puzzle together, take it apart, and put it together from memory, but this isn't so easy for a three-year-old.My little guy can do it, but he gets frustrated when he can't remember what the puzzle looked like and so isn't quite certain what general area to put a loose piece near.

Other things to keep in mind when you are deciding whether to purchase this puzzle include it's size and storage needs. It is larger than other flat wood puzzles and doesn't fit into the puzzle storage or drawers we generally have available for our puzzles. It's dimensions are about 15.5 x 11.75.Also, it comes in it's wood tray, so it does not have a box and the puzzle has to be completely put together to be stored properly. The wood tray is nice, but is not absolutely necessary to put the puzzle together, so if the size of the tray is a problem for storage you could put the pieces in a baggie or box of your own and keep it separate from the tray.

This puzzle looks nice enough to glue together and hang on a wall when your child (or even multiple children) has outgrown it.It is very durable and is likely to last quite well up to that point even with repeated use (I wanna do this one again, Mommy!Pleeeeaaaaassssse!!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Besttoy ever to learn ABCs
I bought this puzzle for my son when he was 2 and half. Although it takes more time for them to complete, this is the best toy to learn upper and lower case. My son learnt it immediately and now he is 3 yrs and keeps spelling all the letters in his little books, even spells the names of grocery stores.
Without this toy I wouldn't have taught him. This is one toy you can buy it without 2nd thought. It is very sturdy and no sharp edges. Even though some lower case letters look similar, it's not difficult for little ones to make out the differences. The letters i and l are very small, so, keep an eye on little children not to put in their mouth. But don't avoid buying it and teaching them.
After seeing this puzzle, many of my friends bought this for their children too and all are satisfied. no regrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
I got this back when my son was only about 9 months old to supplement my home-made flashcards & the educational videos. I didn't take out the plastic at that time since I know he'd just eat them. I just let him point out the letters besides the alpha blocks that he's also learning from. To make a long story short, my son's mastered the alphabet at 14 months old (& to think he was 5 wks preemie when he was born) both the upper and lower case letters and all the letter sounds. Now at 18 months, he's reading the words that he used to know by recognition only.He can actually read now and builds the words using the letters on this puzzle.I'd say it's worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool for letter recognition
This is quite inexpensive for all you get. I love that this is a combination of upper and lower case letters.

This puzzle can be made the traditional way or it can be used as a moveable alphabet. A moveable alphabet is a name for little letters that kids can manipulate on their own. Moveable alphabets are used in Montessori schools and other schools. After buying an expensive moveable alphabet of only lowercase letters (that is all that is available from that other manufacturer) I realized I could have bought multiple sets of this puzzle and use them in the same way. A moveable alphabet is used in freeform activities with your child to teach letter recognition. It is a tactile exercise as the child is holding the letter and moving it, rather than it being a little mark of ink on a page. You or the child can also form words with the letters and sound them out and read them as a way to supplement teaching reading. (Multiple puzzles would be needed so that there are more than one letter each.) My children hold up the letters and ask me which it is and we play games like that, that either they or I invent.

This puzzle is very durable as are all the other wood puzzles from this company.

The only downside is that organization is key if you want to not lose any of the pieces. This is too large for the puzzle holder that this company sells. Also beware the L's and I's are quite small and definately are choking hazard sized..so if you have little ones, take care to keep this out of their reach.

I think this is an inexpensive learning tool that every child should own. Please buy this for your child or give it as a gift to other children.

The puzzle doesn't have fancy graphics or bells and whistles to entertain. Games could be made up by the parent working alongside the child to make this interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A learning toy that grows as your child does!
My daughter received her 1st Melissa & Doug wooden toy for Christmas and boy do we love the ones we have purchase since. Any way, this clock is made of wood. The clock has 12 brightly colored shapes for each number of the clock that your child can take out and then place back into their own place. The hands of the clock are 2 different colors - the minute hand is marked minute and is red and the hour hand is blue. Printed under the hands of the clock have the numbers so your child can find what numbers go where on the clock. Also printed are the seconds and minutes in the 5 minute pie shaped increments that are also different colors. Also included are how to tell time from Quarter Past, Half Past, Quarter til and O'clock.

I love good toys that actually grow with your child and being that it's made of wood, it should last quite nicely for generations! For teaching time, I think this is terrific! Defiantely a 10 Stars! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comes back to it again and again
My daughter is 14 months and she comes back to the board again and again. It's easy to take to grandma's house and doesn't have any loose pieces. The window and toy chest locks need strong fingers; so for now, I leave the two latches unlocked. Overall, she and I love the latch board.

1-0 out of 5 stars Latches are either too easy or too tough!
I bought this puzzle for my 2 year old daughter who LOVES puzzles. Especially the puzzles by Melissa and Doug that open and inside are hidden images or magnets.

The latch puzzle that we purchased was terrible. The sliding latch door lock simply fell out of the latch when you moved the puzzle - thus was to easy and way to loose. The most disapointing is the window latch and trunck latch. Both these two required adult hand strength to open! I had to hold the puzzle flat with one hand and grip the window latch with the other in order to manipulate it open. And I have very strong hands and it was hard for me (an adult) to open!! Perhaps it was JUST our puzzle. So I returned it. The other puzzles are sold in tight plastic wrap and so we weren't able to TRY another latch to see if it is not so HARD. So that is 3 defunct out of 6 latches that my daughter wasn't able to play with. That's half the toy that wasn't workable or child friendly - and NOT worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous--but be careful!
I bought this for my son was he was 14 months old, he is now a very inquistive 3 year old.Within a few weeks, he had mastered it (except for the one lock that is hard to turn). It is wonderful for practicing dexterity, and great for travel. The only thing is, once they master this puzzle, they can then open all the locks and latches in your home--which can definitely be a safety hazard! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old son loves them!
My son received this puzzle set (the older set of the train, plane, fire engine and school bus) for his 4th birthday. It was the perfect gift for him.

In the beginning it took some assistance from me for him to be able to put the pieces together, but in no time he was able to sort the pieces into the correct puzzle (between the 4) and put them together.

The puzzle pieces are actually made of wood and more sturdy then I ever would have imagined.I see them lasting a long time.

The wooden box is invaluable for storing the puzzle pieces and my son and I have never had any problem fitting them on the box easily.I would buy this set again in a heartbeat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Durable
These are just great.Four 12-piece puzzles made out of very durable materials (see Pros below). The sturdy wooden box has four compartments under a sliding lid. Each of the four puzzles are theme related. These four are Fire Truck, School Bus, Steam Engine, and Jet Airplane.

Pros:
Easy but not too-easy puzzles.
Pieces fit well together.
Nice pictures.
Sturdy container.
Each puzzle has a different shape printed on the back to make sorting the puzzles easier.
Super durable.I did not realize just how durable they were until I found a piece in my dishwasher.Even after being washed the picture was fine and the wood in perfect condition.

Cons:
It may take a few moments to figure out how to fit an entire puzzle's pieces in a single compartment.
Lid does not lock closed.

My kids love these and you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars falls apart, and difficult to fit all the pieces in the box
My 2.5 year old son received this toy for christmas. Not even two weeks later, we have already had to fix four of the puzzle pieces. The pictures are coming off the "wood".The wood is more like layers of wood (reminds me somewhat of cardboard), which is probably why they are falling apart so easily. As another reviewer mentioned, it can be difficult to get the pieces apart after the puzzle has been put together, which also can be contributing to the layers of the pieces coming off. Also, it can be difficult to slide the cover back on, unless all of the pieces are laying a certain way in the box. This can be time comsuming for an adult to do, and nearly impossible for a two year with no patience. Overall, I like the theory of the product, but I doubt that it will last much longer unless we stand by with a bottle of glue at all times.I am most upset about the poor quality of the product since I gave several of these as gifts over the holidays. It is embarrassing to give a child a gift that turns out to be junk. ... My 2 year old loves it, and it teaches him more in depth about different vehicles in the city.

He plays with it all the time, has learned to say the names, and can put the pieces in place. He loves to bring the puzzle to me and have me say the names.Very sturdy.I love that the pictures underneath match the pieces. Great puzzle!
