Editorial Review In Slave Zero, players control a gigantic mechanized man whotrounces through hyperurban landscapes, destroying everything in sight. Notches on Mr.Zero's belt include motorists, helicopters, tanks, pedestrians, and an assortment of robotshis own size. Slave Zero does a great job of communicating the difference in scale between themain character and the comparatively tiny people, vehicles, and buildings that populatethe city. However, the controls are very complicated, utilizing every button on theDreamcast controller (including the stick and D-pad separately), as well as combinationsof buttons for additional control, such as picking up and hurling cars. Screams andexclamations from innocent bystanders seem unusually loud, and the complete absence ofin-game music exacerbates the already slow pace of the game. Still, some scenes arestellar, and worth wading through the mediocre spots in between. --JeffYoung Pros:

The graphics are fine, they aren't choppy but they aren't jaw dropping either. The controls are annoying, for instance, to pick up something, you have to hit two or three buttons at once. Once you get used to them though, it isn't that bad. The game itself isn't too hard, especially in the easy mode. Sniping is recommended and is all too easy, the enemy makes constant noise. The bosses are easy to beat, but I don't believe it's just me when I say that the last one is invincible. That is why I give Slave Zero 4 points, the last guy is infuriating, I still loathe him. He's about five times bigger than you, has about ten times your health points and a huge weapon that practically kills you in one blow. With that in mind you have to be constantly circling him trying to get him in your sights without getting hit. So it would have been nice if you could end the game, but otherwise it's a fine game. I suggest sticking to two player gaming, it's much more fun and the levels are very intricate. I got lost a couple of times on one level, but that is trivial. At least you can beat the other player... maybe. One more thing, it was very nice of them to include third and first person views, though personally I thought third person perferable. The city is close set, making it hard to play around when you have a limited view of things. When playing two player games, third person is especially better considering the levels you must play are often small, intricate but small, and the quick pace doesn't allow for looking around for a place to jump to.

Editorial Review Gauntlet Legends could've been a fun, mindless, fantasy-themed"hack-'n'-slash" game if Midway had done anything to take advantage of theDreamcast's hardware. Instead, they've created a game that relies a bit tooheavily on the arcade version--that is to say, it looks mediocre, soundsterrible, and ultimately isn't very fun to play in solo mode. Gauntlet Legends is a 3-D update of the classic Gauntlet arcadeseries. Gauntlet was famous for its hordes of enemies and the fact thatup to four players could play cooperatively. The move to 3-D means there are farfewer enemies to fight (they take up too much processing horsepower), althoughthe visuals have taken a turn for the better. If you've seen this game in thearcade, you'll know exactly what to expect when it loads on your Dreamcast; thetranslation is practically perfect. Unfortunately, the game didn't containcutting-edge graphics in its arcade incarnation--so, don't expect too much inthis home translation. The sound also deserves special mention, because it'sawful. Everything sounds like it was recorded underwater with a cheapmicrophone--some actions aren't accompanied by sound effects at all. Gauntlet Legends' gameplay is all action, but the lack of special movesmakes it extremely repetitive. Solo players will be bored almost immediately, but the fun factor increases considerably when other players join the game. Fourplayers blasting everything on the screen at once and fighting over power-upsmake for some intense moments. If you're looking for a fun single-player gamewith a fantasy setting, you'd be better off with something like Draconus:Cult of the Wyrm--for dorm-room fun and parties, however, GauntletLegends is a sure bet. --T. Editorial Review Select from more than 30 different fighters as you take to the skies to defend a newly independent republic from its many enemies--for fame, for glory, and most of all: for a price. Konami's Air Force Delta features simplistic controls with an emphasis on supersonic fighter plane action rather than the mechanics of flight. Those who worry about flap positions and realistic spin modeling won't find either here, but armchair top guns will enjoy the game's shoot-'em-up feel and ultrarealistic graphics. You assume the role of a mercenary pilot flying missions with very specific goals, such as destroying a convoy of ships or knocking reconnaissance planes out of the sky. Taken one by one, these missions are enjoyable and engaging, but they are all pretty similar and quickly become bland. Succeeding in a mission earns credits to buy new planes--more than 30 beautifully modeled real-world aircraft are available. Unfortunately, the differences between the fighters are mostly cosmetic. While you may find a plane that performs better in a certain mission than others, they all pretty much fly the same way. The graphics are impressive--but things tend to move too fast to afford much sightseeing. In particular, the fighters are extremely detailed and authentic. The first time you see vapor trails form on your wingtips as you pull a high-g maneuver, your jaw will drop and you'll begin to insist that your friends call you "Maverick." Air Force Delta is a good "show-off-your-Dreamcast" game that could probably have benefited from a little more time in development. However, it's the perfect game for a quick flying fix. --Aaron Karp Pros:

There is no real strategy involved. You either blow the enemy up, or get yourself blown up. The cumpter controled characters are pretty good at finding you, so trying to hid is futile! Don't fall in love with the fact that you can fight as an alien. There are only 3 alien vechiles, and their weaponry is basicly the same. The only differenes is how fast the vechicles are able to drive. If you want a sega game that is like a PC shooter, then get Spawn instead.

Editorial Review TrickStyle is one of the most stylishly pleasing games. And theDreamcast version really pumps out the pixels with fluid animation that effortlesslyfollows the hoverboard riders along the tracks. One of the game's designers recentlyexplained that the concept behind the game was for riders to find the path of leastresistance, taking one graceful path down the track like "a drop of mercury." Greatconcept. But this drop met many a brick wall on its way to uncertain victory. The tracksin TrickStyle are not player-friendly, and neither are the computer-controlledopponents that act more like flawless robots than flesh-and-blood competitors. Still, this game looks so darn cool, you can't resist playing it. The requisite tricks fromsnowboarding games are here, but this time they actually add important power-ups toyour repertoire, favoring function over, dare we say, style. To save yourself thefrustration of trying to consistently win races, you should enjoy this game by watchingthe screen while other more nimble or less leisure-time-deficient friends play. --JeffYoung Pros:

Editorial Review Players who thought that NBA 2K was good are in for an evenbetter game of hoops this time around with NBA 2K1. Almost every area ofthe franchise has improved, and now players can hop online and challenge someonein Sioux City, Iowa--or anywhere else--if they please. Player faces are much more recognizable, and the resolution and detail of thecourt is higher than it was before. The coaches, too, are more animated--raisingtheir hands in the air as a three-pointer goes up and in--and the crowd is morethree-dimensional and lively. During the game, players will encounter better defense against lay-ups; also, they'll have to break down defenses with quick passing, and post up and backtheir way to the basket. On defense, the computer always looks for easy buckets, which forces players to double-team opponents and keep scorers to theoutside. Franchise mode is the icing on the cake, as players can draft a team, and signtheir own players and free agents by making offers and orchestrating trades. Afew more special offensive moves would have been nice; but, as is, this is amust-have title for fanatic and casual b-ball fans alike. --Robb Guido Pros:

Editorial Review "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls... Let's Get Ready to Rumble!" calls renowned ring announcer Michael Buffer to start one of the most impressive boxing video games on the market. Ready 2 Rumble takes full advantage of the Dreamcast's advanced technology, and it shows. Each boxer, be it a gorgeous female pugilist or a towering wall of muscle, is beautifully animated in 3-D: watch Tank Thrasher's enormous gut jiggle and bounce as he's knocked to the mat, or see fighters wince when hit or smugly grin when they land a hard punch. Or feel the action with the optional Jump Pack as your controller shakes with each punch and knockdown. The Dreamcast smoothly integrates all of these enhancements while maintaining a high frame rate. The result: Ready 2 Rumble is an incredibly fun game that delivers a knockout punch. By far, the best feature of the game is the variety of boxers--20 in all--representing a range of personalities and abilities. Afro Thunder, for example, is a trash-talking, Chris Rock-sounding fighter with a repertoire of ring speed, quick jabs, and over-the-top hooks, while Butcher Brown is a heavy-handed thug built like a dump truck. There's something for everyone, with many nationalities, genders, and fighting styles represented. Since each fighter has different speed, reach, and moves, there is a pleasant amount of depth to the game. Ready 2 Rumble offers two different game modes: Arcade and Championship. Arcade mode is for one or two players, and is simply a series of boxing matches. The single-player option pits you against a computer-controlled opponent, while the two-player format lets you and a buddy hammer it out. Championship mode puts you in charge of your own boxing gym. You start the game with three rookie fighters, facing off in second-rate gyms, and it's your job to train them in hopes of reaching the championship bout. Championship mode also lets you access Ready 2 Rumble's most innovative feature: the ability to pit your prized fighters against boxers from a friend's gym through the Visual Memory Unit. Just save your stable of boxers onto the VMU and then use it in a buddy's Dreamcast, where you can fight an exhibition match against one of his or her boxers, or arrange a trade. The VMU also lets you save your progress. Without it, all your boxers (and all the secret characters you've managed to unlock) are erased when you turn off the console. But then again, if you've got Ready 2 Rumble, it's unlikely that you'll turn off the console anytime soon. --Mike Fehlauer Pros:

Go get UEFA DREAM SOCCER it is way cool and 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times better than this excuse for a sports game. My thats a lot of zeros.
I'm not a big soccer fan, but I love this game and so do my kids.I think I like this game even more than NFL 2K2 and NBA 2K1 (Sacrilege, I know). The graphics are excellent and the gameplay is fast (although a speed burst button would be nice). Some reviewers have criticized the button configuration, but we haven't had any problems (of course my 7, 8, and 10 year olds catch on fairly fast).Others said the game wasn't realistic, but it's like watching a game on TV and the scores reflect this.So far, I haven't been able to beat the COM, even on easy mode, and I think that's another reason for some of the negative reviews (some egos have been bruised). There is very little commentary, but the incredible crowd cheers makes up for that. Editorial Review If you think it's hard to flag down a cab in a big city, try driving one in Sega's zany straight-from-the-arcade port of Crazy Taxi. If you're one of the teeming fans who eagerly played CrazyTaxi in the arcade at a buck a pop, then this game is a must-buy, if only from a purely economicstandpoint. Even those who don't know the difference between Crazy Taxi and the long-runningTV series Taxi will immediately recognize the appeal of this game. In fact, this game is soimpressive and addictive that it should easily convince a whole new wave of buyers to purchase a SegaDreamcast. What's so hot about Crazy Taxi? For starters, the graphics sport the most impressive re-creation ofa living city ever seen in a video game. The level of detail is astounding and never ceases to surprise theplayer as block after unique block speeds by. The city is a distilled version of San Francisco with somelandmarks and neighborhoods left intact. Making it seem all the more real are apparent product placementsof real-world retail locations such as KFC, Tower Records, and Pizza Hut. And just about everything yousee on the screen is interactive: boxes, phone booths, and mailboxes topple when bumped or smashed, pedestrians leap and tumble out of your path, and the myriad of traffic attempts to avoid your erratichigh-speed antics. While some driving games brag about a lack of boundaries, this one delivers--playersdrive on the ocean floor, off the second floor of a parking garage, through parks, and down stairs. A helpfulhovering arrow points drivers in the correct direction, but you can truly drive wherever you want at anytime, making for tons of replay value. While the game is a direct port from the arcade game of the same name, there's plenty more depth in thehome version. In addition to the city that appears in the coin-op version, the Dreamcast version alsoincludes an entirely new city. Crazy Taxi includes a trunk-load of mini-games that help to teachdrivers how to perform the special speed boosts and maneuvers in the game. Though this game would be plenty exciting without any sounds at all, it has an adrenaline-pumpingsoundtrack supplied by punk crossover bands the Offspring and Bad Religion, as well as some good, ifsometimes monotonous, dialogue between the driver and the passengers. --Jeff Young Pros:

You control Donald Duck, who has only two moves he can use in the game, jumping and a punch. So, using just these two moves, you move from level to level, trying to find your nephews toys and locate the boss piece in each area so you can fight the boss on each level to progress to the next level. Once you get the basics of the game down, it's not very difficult, mostly learning the patterns of the game, like the aforementioned Mario Brothers.Still though, the game is light and fun and the learning curve takes you from easy to slightly difficult.Children will probably enjoy this more than adults will, but adults can enjoy it too.I should know, I'm one and I enjoyed it. So, if you're in the mood for a game with the feel of one of the classic games from the Nintendo era, I'd recommend that you check this game out. There are worse ways to spend a couple of hours, after all.Hope you like it.
