Editorial Review

The wildly popular and award-winning Cranium board game has revved its engines and gone turbo! As in the original game, players in teams race around the board, sculpting, humming, spelling, or drawing answers to clues. But the Turbo edition is enhanced by 1,000 new cards and adds six outrageous activities to the 10 originals, including Odd Couple (determine which two things don't belong in a list), Zooma (identify objects shown in close-up), and Mindmeld (read teammates' minds to come up with the same words on a given topic). An electronic Turbo timer lights up and blasts music to keep the momentum going, as if watching your teammates sculpt "hot pants" or turn each other into puppets isn't energizing enough! Includes the Cranium board, 1,000 cards with 16 activities, a tub of clay, an electronic timer (requires three "AA" batteries [not included]), pencils and pads, and four game pieces. One of the best games around, with something for everyone! --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars family night
my family night people found that we enjoyed cranium sooooo much and that we have played it so many thimes that we memorized that cards

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite game!
coming from someone that has only played the original cranium once, I was blown away by the Turbo edition. It was amazing to see how everyone was so into the game play even when it wasn't their turn. The types and variety of questions made this game a lot of fun and continuously interesting.Cranium brings aspects of all your favorite games into one!Even the modeling clay smelled nice! The actual gameplay was very easy to understand. The only drawback was the timer/question selector. We had to silence it a bit and it took some time for everyone to figure out how long to hold it down for it to work.It was also a bit hard to hear over it during the singing questions.overall - a GREAT game that could never get old!

5-0 out of 5 stars This game ROCKS!
So I have been a lover of Cranium (the original) for years. The formula for parties is great, everyone can master at least a few of the skills requires so all stay excited and engaged. This new release adds even more skills to the mix so you are constantly having to switch your thinking. In addition it adds a little electronic doohickey to substitute for dice. Now, I don't normally go in for gimmicky stuff like this, and I can't say that I have ever met a board game with batteries that I liked, but this thing is pretty cool. It doubles as the dice element, adding some randomness, and as the timer, pretty cool. I also enjoy the little song it plays. I got this game right before the holidays and took it home to play with the family. I have always played with my piers (23 - 30) and was pleased to find that my parents, and even my grandmother thought it was totally entertaining. Get this game, it rocks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents- get ready to find out how little you know!!
My 7 year old daughter is a geography buff, and her skills definately improved after playing this game! It improved mine too! I found out how little I remember about differnt states! She learned North, South, East and West, can name all the states and the capitols! She is leaps and bounds ahead of her classmates in this area, I attribute that to the fun learning she experienced playing this game! I plan to purchase one for all my nieces and nephews when they are 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning FUN!
I highly recommend this game!Very fun while still being extremely educational. The best way to learn is while your having a good time doing it.My son (4 years) has this game and we have given the Jr. version as a gift. The Jr. version is appropriate for pre-readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages
My son started playing this when he was 3.At 4, he can name all the states, abbreviations, capitals and most of the state birds. He can tell you where the major points of interest are without looking at the map. It helps to teach the concept of distance, such as "which state is closest to Maine". It also teaches the concept of compass direction, such as "which state is north of Texas".The game can be played with or without a board for portability. All in all a great educational game for children as well as adults. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good could be Better....
This game is fun but it is also tricky.I have the game in a collectors tin which makes for nice keeping.I have fun playing this game as I love board games but I can find some of the questions extremely tricky for adults as I wasn't old enough for a lot of the ?'s and then for the children's ?'s many are too easy.So this game can get frustrating for us playing it.I do wish they would come out with more ?'s as some have suggested as I too have finished mine.I still have fun playing this game, but find those few things a con in this great game.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a Little Disappointed
I agree with the other reviewers that this game is a lot of fun but there is only one small box of cards (1/2 adult and 1/2 child questions). My daughter and I played 2 games and had already gone through the cards. Even though we didn't get the same questions most of the time it was still disappointing. I called Hasbro and they have no plans of making additional cards for this game, which is really too bad. Does anyone else remember when Trivial Pursuit had 2 huge boxes of questions and the other question boxes that you could purchase?
Aaaaah memories!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun game for everyone
I got this game from my hubby for Christmas, and I have to say that I'm not disappointed. It covers many of the Disney animated movies, starting with "Steamboat Willy" from 1928 and going right up to "Tarzan" from 1999.And the questions aren't all "Who is this character?"...some of them are quite challenging, especially if you haven't seen the particular movie!
The game comes with 2 sets of cards - the adult questions and the children questions, so everyone can play.
All in all, this is a great game for children and adults alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction To The United States Map
Our 5 year-old son plays this game with us and we all enjoy it. This game is a great way to teach children the names and locations of the states. It also teaches an interesting fact about each state. In this version of the game, the players don't have to know the names of the state capitals, but since that information is provided on the game board my son is picking up on it too.

There is a 60 second timer so you can help level the playing field by varying the amount of time older players have to read the card and give the answer. We give our son 45 seconds and my husband and I get 15 seconds. We all finish well ahead of the timer, but we find it easier to use the main intervals marked on the timer. You could use different intervals if you desired.

Durability: We buy a lot of board games and this one has held up better than the others. The cards are thick so they are not easily bent. Also each set of cards has a zip bag so they stay stacked and sorted when you put them away.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it.
Our daughter loves this game. She got it when she was 4.5 years old and it became an instant hit. She learned a lot from this game since then. Now she is almost five years old and we are ready to get her the Great State game for older kids. (she calls it "Great State Senior.") And we are going to give the Great State Junior game to some of her best friends for their birthdays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Vacations

5-0 out of 5 stars Our 4 year old cannot get enough, and we are all learning
Out family has played Time Troopers and/or Show Me The Wild at least 5 times a week since Thanksgiving. As family came and went over the holidays everyone played, everyone learned, and everyone had fun spending time with each other. Our 4 year old begs to play every night before going to bed and learns even from her parents questions.

The video content is even captivating for our 10 month old, so he will have a head start once he starts talking and playing

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a blast in the past, with everyone in your family!!!
This game was extremely fun and engaging!!!!

Everyone, from young to old, enjoyed it!!!

The most important and unique attribute of the game is the ability for everyone, regardless of age/knowledge, to play and have an equal chance of winning!

Pros:

-You can set the time limit of the game, so you can have the game work around you schedule.
-The video clips in the game and appearances by John Clease are classic.
-You can teach history to your children without them even realizing it.
-All ages can play, win, and have a blast.
-The DVD format works great! No clean up, no score calculations, no pieces to lose, and it doesn't take up storage space.

Cons:

-There aren't more games like it.

Overall, I am extremely excited about this DVD game, it has it all! I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have good clean fun with their family and heck; even learn something while you're at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family fun as advertised!
This game has me playing with my wife and 12 and 13 year old boys and we all love it!The game is entirely contained on anormal DVD that you play on your tv- no board pieces, etc to keep track of- the game does it all for you. You can select your level of expertise so everyone can play against each other, and then the "dynamic leveling" keeps it fun for everyone since questions for players get harder/easier with more right/wrong answers. This tends to keep the games close and fun.John Cleese is hilarious in some of the "fate card" scenes. The boys had so much fun they didn't realize they were learning history!Highly recommended!!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Younger kids can develop their powers of logic and deduction inthis game of code-cracking fun. This version is simplified for youngerchildren and comes with colorful animal pegs, ajungle-and-mountain-theme board, and fewer code options. The point is thesame: one player duplicates the other's code in as few turns as possible. The code maker sets a code of 3 colored animals (choosing from 72 in sixcolors), and conceals it beneath a "rocky mountain" tray at his or her sideof the board. In each of nine rows (of large holes), the code breaker attemptsto replicate the pattern. After each row (or turn), the code makerplaces red or white creature pieces in the adjacent row of small holes, which gives the code breaker clues on how he or she doing. Completeinstructions include rules for younger players (based on colors only),older players (color and position), and expert players (a blank-spaceoption adds complexity). This challenging and fun game is for twoplayers. --Ava Natov ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Concept good, design bad
Okay, who designs and tests these games??I don't get it. I also loved Mastermind as a child and bought this one for my 6 year old, figuring it would be easier to learn and play than the 4 peg version. Also it looks really neat in a picture. We opened it up yesterday and she loves it, but it is driving me crazy already.Granted, it is cute, all the pieces are bright colors and of animals, but they are small and they have shallow holes to fit into on the board, so they fall over a lot. A lot!Especially when you have a kid that can't refrain from squirming around for more than 20 seconds. Then, after one falls over, when you try to put it back in its spot, your big fingers knock over their neighbors.Any bump to the board and they all go toppling.Same thing with the red and white pegs. I feel like I am a giant trying to play a little kiddie game. Plus, I really expected it to be harder, more challenging. It took a few rounds for my daughter to get the hang of it, but now the 'secret codes' seem pretty easy to break. There are two different ways they say you can play, and we skipped right over the easy one because it was way too easy.Another minor pet peeve is the little 'cave-like' space you put the hidden color code in. You have tolift that part on and off the board each time you play a game, and in doing so you spill the red and white pegs out of their holder. My daughter always has me lift it off for her as she can't do it gently.AND (I know I am picky, but why don't the designers see these things?) the 'cave-like' space for the secret code gets dark because it is covered, so it is hard to differentiate between colors when you put the pegs in there, the pink, purple and red start to look the same in the cave.
So, if I could go back and do it again, I would just go for the regular Mastermind. In all, my daughter thinks it is great and I like the way it makes her think (flawed logic and all), I just wish it wasn't so clumsy to play though. My rating is high as it is fun (for her), educational and durable because the plastic will last a long time.I just think someone should have seen how unstable the pieces are on the board, and just made it a little more user friendly.

4-0 out of 5 stars You may want to skip this kids' version...
...and go straight to the original Mastermind. I know I wish I had.
We picked this up for our 9yo son, with an eye toward our 6yo & 7yo nephews. I have fond memories of playing Mastermind as a kid and stumping my brother. The original wasn't available at Christmas, so I ordered this for kids who hadn't seen anything like it before. My son figured out his first pattern in 5 rounds. After that, he never went more than 4 rounds (or moves?) without solving it. We took turns playing with him for about an hour. Once we put it up, we never got it back out. It's just too easy. Our nephews (6 & 7) have since played Mastermind, and enjoy it immensely. It's tough for them, but not too tough. So this set won't get much use from them either.
If your child is younger than 8 or new to this type of game, Mastermind for Kids won't hurt. It might be fun. But you'll soon want to move up. The pieces are a little too easy to knock over, but no more than one should expect. As they are small and plentiful, they also seem easy to lose.
If your game collection is small and limited to essentials, skip this one. If it's large, if you like to have the perfect something for any situation, or you just collect games, then go for it.
It's not a bad game, but it's not a must-have, either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutest Strategy Game
The brightly colored animals invite children to try this really fun strategy game. Once you play it, you may not be able to stop. The quality of the plastic is the best manufactured anywhere, so this makes an excellent gift. The compact size of the game, enables easy storage for travel on vacations, camping, or to take to the hospital for visitation.

Any serious game collector should obtain this one. High detail game pieces and game board that is usually found in only a few expensive rare chess sets. This is much easier to learn than chess! Watch out, your kids will learn to beat you after a little practice. So, get ready for some healthy competition.. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Trivia fun, game horrible
With two players, you can't win without the cooperation of the other player. That's if you can make your way through the over-complicated directions. On clue, I had to get the other guy to guess "hamburger" by drawing a hamburger. It was stupid. The trivia cards are a lot of fun.If you can think of another game to play with the cards and burn the directions it could be fun.

Strictly speaking, 20 Questions isn't a game that you needspecial rules or a board for. But innovative as ever, University Gamesmakes a good thing better with a fun design and a little extra help foryounger players. This product features a game board (2 to 10 playersrace around a question mark-shaped circuit) and 150 question cards (for3,000 total clues). Each card has a person, place, thing, or year(either recent or otherwise noteworthy, like 1989 or 1776) with 20clues about the subject. Players take turns trying to figure out theclues ("My favorite cat wears a hat," "I am a doctor who has nopatients"), and both the reader and the guesser advance based on howquickly the subject gets figured out. --Paul Hughes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An equine trivial pursuit, good mix of hard-easy questions
One of my daughters received this as a gift and I couldn't wait to play it with her. There are four categories of questions:Breed, Riding, Horse Care, and Anatomy. As players move across the board, they choose a question from any category. As some of the reviewers said, some of the questions are extremely easy. However - some are very challenging.I say this as someone who has been riding for 35 yrs and who has owned horses. For example, one question is "Mares come into season:(a/ 21 days during spring and summer, b/21 days during fall and winter, c/41 days during summer and fall) (correct answer is "a").An easier question:True/false:you must always wear a helmet with a chin strap when you are jumping a horse (true). There are 200 questions in all; I seriously doubt anyone would find it entirely too easy or entirely too hard - there are a good mix of difficulty levels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disapointment!
We bought this game because our kids love Nick and all things trivia but as other reviewers have said the rules to this game are more complicated than they need to be. The questions are not that great especially because many of the shows are not even featured on Nick anymore. In the end we gave up on the game after first try and decided to return it to the store. Do yourself a favor and find a better game. This one is a real stinker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took 1st place over the video games....
I gave this gift for a 10 year-old sleep over party (as well as let them borrow a gaming system so everyone could play at the same time). The next morning when I picked my son up, I learned that they spent quite a bit of the time playing this board game instead of the multiple video gaming systems available. Although they gave up on playing by the rules, all the boys loved guessing the what the dumb laws were and were talking about them for several days. The game is now on my son's "wish list" ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Grandkids love the game
I bought the game for Christmas for my 4 and 7 year old grandchildren. They love the game.It is simple enough to understand the rules, and is fun even for us grandparents to play the game with them. I am considering getting one for my home to be available for them when they come to our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the little horse lover
I say this is a great present for any child who loves anything and everything about horses! ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Was Claude Monet a painter, a jazz musician, or an Italian dictator?" "Name four of the seven colors in the spectrum." Questions like these are sure to get your child's mental gears meshing while playing the Brain Quest Game for grades one to six. The object is to be the first player to finish a race around the game board, designed to mimic a school playground, by correctly answering questions from the Brain Quest cards. Each of the 256 cards contains questions and answers in categories such as math, science, social studies, English, and grab bag (a euphemism for cultural literacy). Brain Quest's folded cards prevent the I-saw-the-answer-on-the-back problem while allowing even the player asking the question to guess the answer.

A great resource for classroom teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone who has enjoyed E.D. Hirsch's books on education (A Dictionary of Cultural Literacy), the Brain Quest Game is a non-threatening yardstick for measuring learning areas that might need attention. It's also the perfect showcase for helping children to display--and feel great about--how much they already know. Younger kids will enjoy the Brain Quest Game for preschool and kindergarten. Brain Quest is for two to four players. --Julie Ubben ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A SMART BUY
We bought this game for our two kids which are in 2nd and 4th grade.
This game blew away our expectation. Our 2nd grader could answer 2nd grade questions and our 4th grader, could answer 4th grade questions, so they were playin on equal levels. The bonus feature was great, because if it is a subject they are good at, the would take the next grade up's question and move one extra space if they answered it correctly. The "peek and see" cards are a clever addition because our 2nd grader had a hard time reading some of the words in the 4th grade questions. When this happened, he could hand the card to his older brother and he could simply read his own question, without seeing the answer. It's great that we can use our other brain quest sets with this game as well. They thought of everything for this game!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for different aged kids
How refreshing it is to play a game that is so educational and practical. We played this game with our nieces and nephews, who range in age from Grade 1 to Grade 5.This is the only game we know of that can allow kids that are so far apart in age to play on equal ground---and even win!The best part is, we have several of the Brain Quest card decks, which can be used with the game, in addition to the thousands of questions provided. This is a great value for the price. It is educational, fun and really gives the younger kids confidence when the beat their older sibling.

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is GREAT!
I have a troop of 12 Brownie Girl Scouts who have been playing this game for 2 years now (I got it when they were 6 years old). They like it so much that they argue about who gets to play this game, even after 2 years! It is fun for the kids, and fun for adults.

The best part is the ability to choose which level of question to answer (can choose from 1st to 6th grade). It adds to the strategy of the game, making not only knowledge important, but knowing which categories are easy for you or hard.

For those people who gave it negative reviews, I have to wonder if they either didn't read, or didn't understand, the instructions.Saying that it "only requires rote memorization" and then saying Trivial Pursuit is better, not only isn't true, but doesn't even make sense... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Busy for hours!
From where i live, it is a 16 hour drive down to Disney World, depending on traffic. My children are ten and thirteen. My thirteen year old knows a lot about bible trivia so we made teams. Kids vs. parents. The kids had fun keeping score and "kicking our butts" at this game. The kids were able to answer most of the harder adult questions as well. We didn't get through all the questions, but form what i've seen, it looks like a great product. However we are still checking. As some products change things and say somethine entirely different form the bible. If your kids have been going to sunday school or some other bible learning edvent, I encourage you to quiz them by using this product. ... Read more
