Cheap, Cheap Plastic Not much fun
This looks like such a great toy, and the packaging is really impressive, but don't be fooled like we were. I assumed that by paying close to 25 dollars it would be somewhat durable-just reasonable durability-I don't expect much from plastic toys...but this is really really bad. You might also think that paying that much would give you things like closable doors...you know, 99 cent matchbox cars' doors stay closed, but the space shuttle's doors don't-which limit it's "fun" factor. The "movable arm" is just a free floating plastic stick that simply is stuck into a hole..It doesn't even stay in. The "launch pad" and the fuel tank/boosters are down right horrible. They don't connect to the shuttle, which was disapointed all of us, especially my son. And it is so cheaply made, I really can't believe that it wasn't bought from the dollar store. My son was so excited for this set. But after playing with it for just a few minutes he hasn't gotten it out again. I would definately NOT recommend this

Lauch time!!
We have been searching for a shuttle for a year now and are glad to have found this one.The shuttle itself is durable, yet safe enough for my one year old to play with as well as my older two.They love to fly around, dropping off the rocket boosters and the re-landing on the launch pad.The space vehicle and astonauts are an added bonus, even though they do not fit together. Quality Not Good
The quality of this toy is not as good as the Hummer. The radio does not work clear at all. I bought it for my son and i am not satisfied at all.!!!!

Nice Navigator
I like this car.My dad has a pimpin' '05 navigator with flame spinners and he gets so mad when a speck of dirt gets in it.That is basicly me and my navigator remote control car.I hate it when i let one of my friends drive it and they crash it. I't doesn't have digital proportional control like the Hummer remote control car I have.That just says that you can't drive it inside very well w/out hitting anything.I have a '36 ford coupe remote control car w/ hydrolics.I wish the navigator had hydrolics.Overall this car is great if you're looking for some fun!!!!!!!!!!

Breaks too easily!
My three year-old loved this toy, and was very careful with it, but the gear that holds the arm controlling the shovel in position broke after two weeks of use.Very disappointing.

Not Great for Manual Play
This toy initially lived up to its reputation, but since my 3-year-old sometimes uses the remote control and sometimes uses his hands to operate the excavator, the excavator's bucket has lost a lot of its remote-controlled movement. Also, the controls were difficult for our son to figure out (he's right at 3 years old), and I don't think he's less intelligent or less dexterous than other kids his age (of course: I'm his mom). He has used other remote control toys with no problem. This is probably a great toy if the child is at least 4, has lots of experience with fairly complex remote controls, and won't be tempted to use his hands to operate it.

You HAVE to buy this toy!

The infamous Diesel #10
Thomas fans who have seen Thomas and the Magic Railroad probably are familiar with Diesel #10. For those who haven't seen the movie, Diesel #10 is an evil diesel who hates steam engines and wants to find the lost steam engine so he can put an end to all the other steam engines. Little kids will have a great time making up their own adventures or creating the original movie plot with this toy. I would highly suggest this toy for little Thomas fans.

I've Got To Agree On the Claw
We also have a Thomas fanatic in our home and while we've been watching all the video/dvd's for months, I held out on the movie because someone told me it was terrible. (PS: It's pretty terrible, but your Thomas fan will love it so be prepared to watch it 100's of times ughh).Where was I, oh yeah...my son LOVES the Thomas movie and LOVES Diesel and Lady so I ordered both for his birthday.He was so excited when he opened his present and realized it was Diesel, however that quickly turned to concern when the first thing out of his mouth was "Mom, he's broken, the claw doesn't bite or move up and down".

I don't know why LC designed Diesel this way since the fact that Diesel's claw can move up and down and bite is such a HUGE part of the Thomas movie.Regardless my son took him quickly to the Island of Sodor (his train table) and played with him for the rest of the night.He wouldn't trade Diesel in for anything, but Diesel won't get 5 stars because I think his designer made a boo-boo by not making him more true to his character in the movie.

Diesel (and Lady) is still an important edition to your train set though if your little one is a fan of the Thomas movie.

Diesel's Claw is pretty cool
Diesel 10 was introduced in Thomas and the Magic Railroad and his claw goes backwards and fowards. It's fun to have him chase Thomas and Lady along the Track. He can also pull coaches and cars. Another Great Rescue!
My son the rescue hero junkie, got this with his christmas money. Seeing how he has about a million figures, this was his first vehicle.It is so cute!! The little rescue shooters can go in 3 different places and shoot nicely across the room! A big deal for a 4 year old! The jet ski also shoots out when you press the button. He loves that you can put the rescue bouys on the jet ski OR the boat and sail off to rescue shoot someone.He has a much better realistic ideas of what true real life heroes are from playing with rescue heros!! Now whenever he sees police or firefighters, he whispers with awe...."There's a rescue hero!" LOL! Several friendly cops have gotten big ego boosts from it! LOL! This toy goes great over carpet, floor whatever, and has held up to lotsa play from 3.5 yr old sister and my son!! Sir Topham Hatt and his equally robust consort are perky and colorful.Sir Topham Hatt wearshis trademark topper, gray flannels, and a black tailcoat with a rather smart yellow waistcoat; his wifesports a green skirt and a sensible sky blue blouse with lace collar.Their wooden heads sit on top of plasticbodies with movable arms. The Hatts
The Sir Topham and Lady Hatt figures are quite basic, with the face being a painted wooden sphere. The arms are movable, but they're pretty stiff.

Kids probably won't mind the lack of detail, especially since the characters in the Thomas videos aren't exactly crafted with fine details, either.

A nice addition for kids who love the whole Thomas the Tank Engine series of books, trains, and videos.

A great addition to your Thomas collection.
I umm and aahh about spending this sort of money on a train table and playboard for my children but after doing my homework I decided this is the one I would buy.

Other train tables I have seen in stores are often wonky and seem quite unstable - and this is after they've been played on in the stores. So after seeing poorer quality tables for similar prices I decided to save up for the Thomas branded one and this single sided playboard.

Yes, it's expensive, but as with any "brand", it's the name you are paying for. If you want a Thomas collection of trains and accessories you are going to have to pay. I'm just starting our collection and am buying the "Thomas" trains and buildings, but found a compatible generic track for less than half the price. I was lucky enough to get this playboard at almost half price at a after Christmas sale. It's worth waiting for sales and price comparing.

It's beautifully painted and when used with the table frame is extremely strong (although I wouldn't recommend standing on it).

It's up to you to spend to decide if you want to spend this sort of money but I see this as something I won't ever have to replace and it's something my son can keep for his children. Toys like this will last!

Great fun!
We just received this playboard a couple of days ago.My son loves it!He is almost 2 and really enjoys playing with all of his Thomas trains.This playboard makes playing more interesting.It arrived in fine condition...we didn't have the problem the other reviewer had.My son has a train table (not the Thomas one) and it fits perfectly.The playboard is a great addition to our Thomas the Tank Engine collection.

Makes playing with our trains much more fun!!
We have a collection of Thomas and Brio trains and track, and use this playboard on a table that we built. While it is impossible to actually construct track that stays on "dry land" (some of the playboard scenery is rivers etc) this background scenery does add to our enjoyment of the playing with trains.The whole family (ages 1 to 30-something) enjoys constructing new layouts.

This board can easily be damaged in transit. Our second attempt was successful. I advise you to order this well before you need it.

NOTE: We've had this for 4 years or so now. The plastic coating has all peeled off. It still looks nice though and is being used by another toddler now.When we bought this, it was the only good option for playing with trains;now there are so many basic playtables that could be used for a multitude of activities (puzzles, cars, blocks) - that I would buy something more versatile rather than this train themed tabletop. ... bad design
My son received this toy for Christmas. He lost interest in it before I managed to assemble it into the fire truck. Once assembled the front of the truck was too top heavy and kept pulling away from the magnet. The magnets are not strong enough to keep the vehicle together. The door to the launcher will not stay closed. And the pieces keep falling off.Very aggravating. I am looking forward to putting this toy in my spring garage sale.

Awesome
I have been so impressed.I have 4 boys that are 6,5,4,2 and I watch extra 4,3,2 year olds.It is amazing to me to watch the kids all take turns and have a blast with this set.The set is big enough for multiple kids to play and share, and will grow with their skills and creativity!I am an educator and I can see real potential with this system.

A Favorite!
My 2 1/2 year old LOVES FORKLIFTS, but toy forklifts are very hard to come by.We got this for him for christmas and he loves it so much, he's been sleeping with it every night!It isn't as durable as I'd like, but i explained to him how it was a special toy and he needs to play with it gently, and so far, it's held up nicely.

Bruder breaks 1st day & no refund
Last Christmas we purchased the forklift and 2 other vehicles by Bruder.One arrived with a broken piece and the other 2 broke the first day.I contacted Bruder by email a few days after Christmas.I was told that after 20 days, no returns were accepted.Since I ordered the gifts prior to Christmas, I was out of luck.They never responded any further to my complaints in the quality of their product.Die Cast vehicles have been much more durable.Not only were the products brittle, but moving mechanisms seemed made to crack off so that very quickly the primary function of all the machines was broke.

Fun, but not durable
My 3-year-old son was crazy about watching the fork lifts at Home Depot and was delighted to receive this as a big brother gift when our second child arrived.But alas, as other reviewers have mentioned, it is brittle.The basket was broken into many pieces after being stepped on.The up/down mechanism was too delicate.We still get it out for the second child now and then, but he is too frustrated about the broken parts. ... I did all of my online research & then visited our local ToysRUs. I found this wagon on sale for $39.99, had coupons & a birthday coupon! I walked out of the store only paying about $34.00!

Online wants to charge $35 to ship this b/c of size/weight- forget it- go pick it up yourself & save $35!

Wagon is great!

Explorer wagon
Well I must say I read a lot of reviews about his wagon, and it pays to buy it and test it for yourself. We have had this wagon since 1996, and we still have it. My daughter got it for her first Christmas, and she is now ten. She still fits in the wagon perfectly, and also pulls around her 7 year old brother and 5 year old sister, who can both fit in it at the same time. We have never had any problems with the wagon, in spite of people's complaints about the wagon being noisy. So what? As long as the kids are having fun, who cares if the tires make noise on the pavement. My kids have put many miles on our wagon, and never once has anything broke on it, or fell off. The tires are still going strong, and everything is in tact. I expect my kids to use this until the last child has outgrown the usage. The handle is long enough that even adults can use it without straining their backs. My kids have been able to pull this wagon around since they were old enough to walk on their own. Get over the noise, and get busy having some fun. If noise is your problem, get over it! It's a small price to pay for your children having fun, and getting some calories burned off. It doesn't make anymore noise than a basketball being bounced.

Transfer Freight, and Make a Bit of Noise Too!
My son is a Thomas the Tank Engine fanatic.Encouraging pretend playtime is easy especially when adding destinations to the existing train set.The Cargo Transfer Station was one of the items William received for his 3rd birthday, and as it turns out, it's the most beloved destination yet.

The Cargo Transfer Station is one of the NEW Wooden Railway Sights & Sounds Destinations.I didn't understand what that meant when I ordered the item, as I wasn't an authority on Thomas & Friends.Almost a year later, I can safely say that I have a working knowledge of the current railway system, and the beloved character engines.The NEW Wooden Railway Sights & Sounds Destinations have multi-sensory capabilities.They make sounds.

One of the reasons the Thomas & Friends wooden railway was so appealing to me was because it didn't require batteries.I like the idea of child-powered toys, because I think it induces more creativity than a bunch of flashing lights, and noise.Personally, I was a bit disappointed when I discovered this toy was battery-operated.That said, my attitude on the noise issue doesn't matter to my son, as he adores this toy.Often times the switch is turned off, and I've noticed the lack of sounds doesn't take away from the fun factor.

Fortunately, the Cargo Transfer Station fit in my son's existing setup, so we didn't have to disassemble the Mountain Tunnel Set to make room for the new destination.Other destinations require a new setup, so I see this as a bonus.In addition, some of the Thomas & Friends bridges, or destinations are best placed in the center of a layout.This plaything can be placed anywhere within a layout, as it replaces a 6" straight track.

I wonder if Learning Curve made the right choice by introducing the NEW Wooden Railway Sights & Sounds Destinations to the line.A good part of this piece is made out of plastic whereas most of the other items in the line are wood.I realize the reason for using plastic is probably to reduce the price, but I also think it reduces the quality, and weakens the line.William's been playing with his train set for 10-months now, and we've had no issues.Then, he received the Cargo Transfer Station, and 5-months later it breaks.In my opinion, these plastic pieces lower the standard, although they may entertain your child.

My son LOVES this!
Of all the Thomas pieces we hae, this is one of the few that my son always insisits on including in whatever the latest configuration is.It is costly (as are all Thomas things), but comes with cargo and two cargo cars.It makes cool noises and has a great working crane that swivels.Not a bad deal.

After Two years of use it's time for another one
I was really disapointed when I found my Lady's paint chipped off in most places. We need a new one now and that's a bummer becase I have at least 70 thomas trains and most of them survived pretty well .

For 18 months to 8 years: Be prepared to buy them all!
The Thomas train and train collections are durable toys. Their real value, though, is that playing with the toys allows children to act out the great Thomas and Friends children's stories they read and watch.

The only problem--if you can call it that--is that you can't just buy one! Your kids will want more and more. These are the most played with toys our son has. The characters are his friends, and we tell stories with Thomas, James, Gordon, and the rest of the gang.

Lady only appears in the Thomas and the Magic Railroad movie. But she is an important character, and the kids adore her. My own three-year old son was so overcome with excitement at the sight of Lady that for a long time he couldn't watch her when she first appeared on-screen and wouldn't play with her when we initially bought him this toy. She is magical, and kids pick up on that. THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL PIECE IF YOUR CHILD HAS SEEN THE THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD MOVIE.Note that durability is an issue: the smokestack is very thin at the bottom and can easily snap off.

Purchasing recommendation:
* Choose which type of Thomas trains you will 'standardize' on. There are three kinds: This size of wooden trains from Learning Curve; larger, plastic, battery-operated trains from Tomy; and smaller, die-cast metal trains from Ertl. The wooden trains have the most products and accessories available.

* The clickety-clack (grooved to look like real railroad) track in the Thomas series is great, but it's expensive; I recommend buying generic track. ... You can literally save hundreds of dollars by buying these kinds of sets.

* Buy the Thomas and friends engines separately--and wait for sales. The kids care about the characters, so no short-cutting (ie., Brio or generic trains) here.

* Look for trains bundled with VHS videos. You can get a video and a train (on sale) for about the same price as a train alone.

Kind old Edward still works perfectly
I know Edward is old and my train sure is but he can still pull trains likje the big engines. His magnet is in perfect working order and he can pull a couple coaches without trouble at all. A cool thing about Edward and all the other tender engines is that little kids love to take the tender on and off. I thinks it's so funny when they do that. Edward really works well and he's capable of hours of enjoyment at a time.
