Editorial Review

Speed, not artistry, is the key to Pictionary Junior, a party game that stole the show from Charades in the '80s. The kids' version, which has been updated with hundreds of new words to draw, has hints and two levels of play. There are 144 two-sided cards. The red side is more challenging, and the blue side is easier--for younger players. Both include a theme to be read aloud and start everyone thinking on track. Teams go head-to-head to guess the word their "picturist" draws within 60 seconds. How fast can you draw an apple pie, an eyebrow, or a coin? It takes a quick hand and good guesswork to move around the game board from start to finish before the other team. A timer and easy-to-read instructions are included. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Kid's Game with Drawing!!
I like Pictionary Jr. because it is a game about drawing, one of my favorite things, for kids. It's hard for younger kids who can't read and you need about four people. But overall, I really like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars .....
The only setback to this game is if the people you are playing it with really stink at drawing. If that's so, then you're at a disadvantage and pretty much sunk. But it's fun to play anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars tons of fun
As a family game, we have tons of fun.
The kids really get into it.They have to use
their imagination. The whole family loves it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If there's any game out there that normally makes little kidsfeel left out, it's Scrabble, the word game that's usually played byadults and older kids. But Scrabble Junior is a great way to introduceyoung children to the game and get them interested in how words areformed. In the beginner game, specially developed for younger kids, players draw seven tiles from a pool, then work to match letters to theones printed on the board. As they work through their tiles, they spellout the words, one letter at a time, and receive points for finishingeach word. By the end of the game, they'll have used over a hundredletters to work through a variety of different words. On the other sideof the board there is a basic version of the classic Scrabble game withsimple scoring rules. Once your children master the advanced game, youmight be surprised to see that they're ready to take you on in a matchof the original Scrabble. Just be prepared to losegracefully. --John Longenbaugh ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother - get the real thing.
Scrabble Jr. uses cheap materials for a not-all-that-cheap price. It simplifies the scoring, but that removes the reward for using the harder letters... and if you really want to do a 1-point-per-letter scoring system with no bonus spaces on the board, it would be easy enough to implement that with a regular set. The board is smaller, so it actually makes the game harder as you go along, because you run out of space at the edges to make the words you'd like to. The basic skill of constructing words isn't any easier with this game than with an adult set, and I think the simplified scoring takes a lot of the fun out of the game. I'm getting a Scrabble Deluxe set to use with my 6 and 9 year old kids - they'll need some help, but no more so than with Scrabble Jr. and it will be a more satisfying and more durable game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My daughter received this game as a gift.We Love It.She wants to play it all the time.It is a great spelling game. She is 6 years old and just started to read and loves to spell.Excellent Game

3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of deficient
I was excited at the prospect of a scrabble game I could play with the little children I babysit for.Unfortunately, this game relied neither on the luck that evens the playing field nor a skill a young child could pick up quickly enough to start winning enough. So unless I play dumb, I wind up winning each time. Also, I found the layout of the game to be especially poor for two reasons.First, as the featured reviewer noted, the cartoony pictures obscure the first letters of words.Second, the choice of words is so poor, it slows down the spelling process, especially at the beginning, when the variety of options is very limited. It seems the creators of the game just played a few rounds of Scrabble (TM) and said "Hey, this one looks good for kids" and didn't do any playtesting. So in conclusion, rather than looking at an educational game designed for children, what we have is a recognizable brand name that has been adapted to take advantage of a heretofore unregocnized market share. In other words, just trying to make a quick few bucks. ... There's no need to be boggled by words. Boggle Jr. helps children learn letters, spelling, and reading while having loads of fun! This easy version of the terrifically popular adult Boggle uses pictures and matching games to allow children to make the connection between objects and their names. With two skill levels, players can challenge themselves further as they become more adept at identifying letters and words. It will seem like no time at all before kids are begging to play their parents' version of Boggle! The game, for one or more players, includes a game tray with word cover, 30 picture/word cards with 60 three- and four-letter words, and eight letter cubes. --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just saw this game for cheaper!
I was just over at Target, and I scanned it on the price scanner and it came up as only $5.I asked a clerk if this was the sale price, and she said no, it was the regular price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational but not very Entertaining
Rather than call Boggle Jr a game I would call it an educational tool.It is very boring! It has several dice and each of the sides are labeled w/a letter. There are also flash cards that you put in the holder and cover up the either 3 or 4 letter words and look at the picture to spell the words with the dice. That's basically it.Whoever spells the most words correctly wins. Not the most fun game but would be great to teach or improve childs spelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning GAME opportunities
I agree that the "game" is more learning vs playing per the directions. However, a little creativity and a fun, educational time can be had.The newest version that I play with my 3.5 year old son has us splitting the dice and taking turns rolling our dice with the goal of getting one of the word's letters. He has fun rolling and searching his lot even if he doesn't roll a needed letter.Plus he can easily handle 4 dice. When you roll a "needed" letter you place it in its place. The player who fills in the last letter "wins" and gets to spell out and say the word.Sometimes we make up our own songs about the winning word. This version easily keeps him happy for a half hour at a time and he has also played his own take on his own.

Think you can come up with a girl's name containing the letters "Q" and"Y" in 60 seconds? Or a food or drink using "H" and "J"? There will truly betimes when Wordplay for Kids will be anything but child's play. Designed forplayers 6 to 12 years, this combo of word building and racing to the finish lineinvites youngsters to come up with the longest word they can in order to gainthe most spaces on the board. The spinner selects the two letters that mustappear in the word, the die roll selects the category the word must fit. Theenclosed rules are simple and, with one exception, easy to understand (you maywant to adopt a house rule clarifying whether or not the word must begin withone of the two spun letters, or merely contain it). And it'll probably take onlyone fight between the player who composed "Patty" and the "Patricia-Elizabeth"wordsmith, before you'll want to outlaw the use of hyphens. Those preteens canbe soooo devious. --Tony Mason ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game for the Whole Family
So glad I bought this one. It's fun, educational and we have as much fun playing as the kids do.The great thing is that everybody plays every round which prevents waiting for your turn.In a nutshell, all players are given a Word Sheet. The spinner on the board is spun to pick 2 letters that must be in the word.As an example, let's say an "A" and "C" are the spun letters for the round. All the players write those letters on their own Word Sheet. Then the die is rolled to determine the category -say "living creatures".Then the 30 second timer is turned and everybody has 30 seconds to form the LONGEST word possible. When the 30 seconds are up, players compare words to see who formed the longest word. Each player advances on the board by the number of letters in the word they formed. So the player with the longest word advances the furthest. The trick we do to make it fun for us parents is that while the kids just need to find a word containing an "A" and "C" (e.g. cat, caterpillar), we parents have a harder job and must form a word with the "A" as the FIRST LETTER and the "C" as the LAST LETTER.In this instance, both us parents could not think of anything beginning with an "A" and "ending" in a "C" so we both did not form a word and we both did not advance on the board. But the kids advanced by 3 spaces each because they both formed the word "CAT".The kids were surprisingly enthralled with this game. They also love the spinner and always try to spin it the fastest and most.Anyway, this is a great family activity. The kids often play without us.We highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun game; cheap cheap make
I played this game with my kids (under 8) and they seemed to like it: it is a spelling game and can be exciting for kids who have just mastered reading and writing. The participating adults can guide the game along, making it a cooperative game, rather than competitive.

The down side--and it is a big down side--is that the game is so cheaply made that it is nearly impossible to play the game: The spin-wheel, which is key to the game as it determines which letter of the alphabet gets randomly selected, does NOT spin at all. I can't imagine this particular part, if made slightly better (say, barely usable), could have cost that much more--this game isn't cheap to begin with.

Frankly, as much as my kids like this game, I feel that my money is not well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart and Fun.
This game is clever! It really is loads of fun for kids to play and at the same time (without their conscious knowledge) they are improving their word skills. The game has a spinner, which, off-the-bat makes kids interested. Next, all kids play each round which ensures that nobody has to wait their turn (waiting for their turn in a game to my kids seems like slow torture).Since, they are all playing in each round there is lots of competition to come up with the best and longest word to fit one of six categories (ie. boys or girls name, living creature, food or drink and I can not remember the others). All and All - a smart and fun kids game. ... My family has enjoyed this game for many years.Like the other reviews, we made copies of the sheets and continue to play. We've written high scores and even low scores on the box since the early '70's.Our box has a price of $2.29!.This is a great game and for those that think the cup is noisy....my Dad put felt on the bottom and sides of the cup and it doesn't make a sound!Buy and enjoy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perquaky is always a hit...a word game for all ages
Perquacky is a great game. We have introduced so many friends to the game and it's always an instant hit.It looks easy.It looks fascinating. You can't wait for your turn to test your abilities.Certainly you can build 5 three, four and five letter words before your time is up. Of course you can get at least a few 6 or 7 letter words. But once the sand starts running through the hour glass, the tension sets in. All eyes are on you. Will you choke? This game is loads of fun for anyone who can put a word together. You can learn to play in a few minutes, but it will keep you going for hours. As a bonus, it's compact and easy to carry most anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best all around
This game consists of 12 cubes (dice with letters on all 6 sides), a timer, and simple rules. You roll the cubes and make up to 5 3-, 4-, 5- etc. letter words as you can until your hourglass timer runs out.You can adapt it so that younger and older players can compete by restricting the number of cubes for older players.Fun, educational, and addictive. If you love scrabble, you'll really love this game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Educational , and fun!!
I'm a teacher, I played this game when I was a child and loved it! Now I use it in my classroom for reading groups and to make learning fun for low readers as well as advanced readers! 5-0 out of 5 stars We had a blast playing this game!!!
Four of us stayed up till 3am playing this game last night! We play it at least twice a week since we baught it in 2003.
People spell the funniest words in this game, it's "give me all your oooo's" or "I challenge the word BOOTEE" I challenged it! But it's a word! You have to remember who snatched what letters from who! It's like "GO-FISH" but with letter cards and you spell words with the letters you snatch from opponents.
My daughter is "8", she beat us twice, her words only have to be "3" letters long to lay them down, while adults need at least "4" letter words to play them! She loved it, she saw a lot of our words, it was wonderful.
If someone challenges your word you lay down, you have to pick it back up and return it to your hand, it's like a penalty, then everyone knows what you have and they attack your cards.
It's the first time I ever played a card game or word that made our family laugh and have so much fun! We love our scrabble, but have not played it sence! GREAT GAME, EVERY PARENT SHOULD PLAY THIS GAME WITH THIER CHILDREN, it's an educational and entertaining bond for you and your child!

This is my first time to ever review a product, it's not my thing to pass judgement, but this game is speacial for all ages!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
I have played this with two people and we both found it somewhat boring. It might be fun with a larger group. However, the reason we are unlikely to play it again is that the cards have a texture that makes them stick together which makes it hard to handle them.

5-0 out of 5 stars exciting educational game for kids
This exiting card game plays like go fish and gin rummy using letter cards to spell words. Kids and adults snatch letter cards back and forth until someone gets rid of all their cards first spelling words. It's a race of wits that makes spelling a fun game for everyone. Just before you spell a word, someone says "give me all your 'E' cards." They mess up your word and you have to start all over again! Challenging other players words is fun too because if they miss spelled it, they have to pick it back up after exposing all their letter cards and the player that challenged the word, gets first shot at the exposed letters. FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN!! Try it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HE'S LEARNING TO SPELL!
I recently purchased this puzzle for my toddler son. When I received it, I was disappointed with the small pieces and was going to send it back.I did, however, keep it because I thought the educational value may prove more important than the size of the puzzle.

Boy, was I right on that!My son truly enjoys putting together these mini-puzzles and on his own. He's only two, but loves his letters and shows interest in words. He's actually learning to spell! And I love the fact that the puzzle is self-correcting;he knows a word is spelt correctly if the puzzle is complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toddlers who like puzzles willlove this
My son started this puzzle at age 2 and really enjoyed putting every set of words together and would not stop until every one was complete. He has always enjoyed puzzles. I would put the letters in groups so that each pile would complete a word.
Now that he is a little over 2 1/2 I can just let him search the whole box for the letters and match them up himself. I highly recommend it because after each individual puzzle is complete you can have your child spell it to you to continue the learning!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many pieces
There are too many pieces to this puzzle..My son knows all his letters and can spell some words (he is 3) so I guess this was too advanced for him because the pieces were everywhere..I think this would be more beneficial if the letters were grouped in at least two to three per piece versus one puzzle piece per letter. ... Welcome to Kings Cribbage, an unusually effective blending of the age- old pasteboards-and-pegboard card game, with the crossword grid strategy ofScrabble. Players take turns building crib hands of two to five hardwood tiles, each bearing playing card rank--deuce through ace. As in Scrabble, players areallowed to add tiles from their rack to the ends of, or perpendicular to,existing plays on the rotating board. The scoring is virtually identical tocribbage--runs, pairs, 15s--with bonus points awarded to any player who canfashion a crib hand with tiles all the same color. With its deluxe, two-tonedhardwood equipment (though the board is fashioned from less-than-regal plastic)and illustrated English/French rules, Kings Cribbage is a crowning achievementin challenging play. --Tony Mason ... I just ordered this game but have played it often. My sister has one and we always play when we are together. Now I will have my own.If you love cribbage, you'll love this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Combination
I purchased this game for my mother for Christmas. My family has played a lot of cribbage and scrabble through the years. We loved this game and all three generations played together (ages 12-66). It is awell-made, durable, easy to learn (provided you know the basics of cribbage scoring), interesting game. It moves a little faster than scrabble and is not quite as much brain strain.
