Editorial Review Please wait to be seated for Dish It Up!--a colorfully designedgame of matching and simple counting that'll serve a stack of fun topreschoolers. Players are dealt clever renderings of guest checks fromthe imaginary "Blue Spoon Diner." Each check sports cartoon drawings ofa chef, a main dish (BLT, hotdog), a side order or dessert (such asJell-O or fries), and a beverage like cocoa or milk. Players then turnover 2 of 40 facedown tiles, each one a picture of one of theabove-mentioned foods or chefs. If both tiles match up with pictures on theirguest checks, they hold them and continue their turn by drawing twomore tiles. If only one (or none) matches, they turn them back down andrelinquish their turn. Players matching all images on their checkscollect a $1 tip. First player to earn $5 wins the game. If you'relooking for pastimes for younger fry, Dish It Up! serves two to fourwell-done. --Tony Mason ... Read more Subjects: 1. Cards

Editorial Review For those of you tired of all the fun being had by a certain dog (andBingo was his name-o), the folks at Gamewright would like to provide a littleequal opportunity for kitties. With Kitty Corners--a nice dice-and-mice race tobe Top Cat by getting either four in a row or all four corners--themanufacturers present another award-winning educational game. Players attempt toplace a mouse token on their colorful bingo board, each square of which depictsone of four cats in feline frolic. Roll both the kitty die and the action dieand cover all squares that match the resulting picture. Is that Sassy playingwith her yarn? Or Meatloaf bugging a bird? But watch out for Cat Scat on theaction die: you'll have to remove a mouse from your board. Kids shouldfamiliarize themselves with the pictures on both the boards and the dice beforeplay begins so they don't get frustrated making matches. Only one human appearson the die, while the board depicts four (all constitute a match), and Meatloafis a big bundle of brown spots on the board, but solid brown on the die. Fasterthan a hungry kitten, and sharper than claws on a new sofa, Kitty Corners is thecat's pajamas. --Tony Mason ... Read more

Editorial Review What's the Bzz? Well with Gamewright's Bzz Out card game, there's awhole lotta hive-hoppin' and honey-swappin' goin' on. A deck of whimsicalnumbered cards (Anthony Lewis's illustrations depict a cartoon swarm engaged inactivities beginning with, appropriately enough, the letter B) is used asplayers take turns deciding if they want to keep the top card from their hive ortrade it to the beekeeper on their left, in an effort to have thehighest-numbered card (and thereby score a Honey Pot token) after all keepershave played. A Bzz Out card enables you to tell a prospective trader to "Bzzoff!" and it scores you a token, too. But don't feed the bears: get caughtholding a Honey Bear card at the end of the round, and surrender a token.Designed for three to six players, Bzz Out is a great little game with a nicestrategic sting. --Tony Mason ... Editorial Review Winner of an Oppenheim Best Toy Award, this delightful Gamewright card game is as intellectually tasty as it is hilariously unappetizing. Forty-four cards in the bread-shaped deck are nine separate elements of sandwich fare: one card portrays a lettuce leaf, another shows tomatoes, a third offers a smear of peanut butter, a fourth depicts egg slices, and so on. After the cards are dealt, players lay them down on a central pile (Peanut butter on top of eggs?! Gross!) to construct a card-sandwich that can be won in several different ways. If you see a pair of elements, or a "sandwich" of matching elements--for example, lettuce, pickles, then lettuce again--you slam your hand on the food pile and keep the cards. There are also three "thief" cards to stop (i.e., smack!) and eight devilish "muncher" cards, which demand that you get a pair or a "sandwich" while laying down a specified number of cards or you lose your grub. Slamwich takes about 20 minutes to play, and is deeply pleasurable for young ones, and pretty darned amusing for adults, too. Slamwich is for two to six players. ... Read more Reviews (31)

A child doesn't have to read to play this game, but they must love puzzles (and most do) to enjoy it. The puzzle pieces are made of standard cardboard and they can get worn out after some use. But I think one will get enough fun out of this game to worth the money.
The idea of the game is to use puzzle pieces to create a series of long dragons. The longer your dragon, the more points you get. Well, those are the simple rule, which are great for young players, but if you're a fan of strategy games, there are more complex gameplay variations that will put your brain to the test. Or, you don't have to play it as a game at all. It's fun to just put it together as an free form jigsaw puzzle, too.
Our family and friends have been playing SNAP for some time now with children as young as 3 and adults as old as 83. With its great artwork and creative design and rules, SNAP creates fun times for all. SNAP play itself involves no language or math skills... it mainly involves spatial relationships - object orientation and color matching.SNAP is very much like doing a very simple jigsaw puzzle.Game 2, the simplest, simply involves being the first player to get rid of his/her cards first.Games 1 and 3 involve points and score keeping. SNAP has a very unique play feedback mechanism (incorrectly placed tiles won't snap together) that prevents players from making a bad placement of a SNAP tile card. This feature makes SNAP very good for a wide range of abilities.SNAP should be a great resource for persons with disabilities. SNAP plays quite fast, so parents should always be able to get at least one quick game in with a pleading child when time is tight.SNAP can, however, keep kids busy for hours at a time. SNAP allows for many variations in play.Children, especially, tend to make up there own games and rules which fosters creativity. I know of one elementrary school that plans to put a SNAP game in every classroom including special ed classrooms.I could not offer a better endorsement. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Games

Editorial Review In Mummy Rummy, players dig and sift for Egyptian treasures likeartifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun. As in gin rummy, the object is to formsets of like cards, but the fun of Mummy Rummy is that each card shows a portion of an artifact, so the three-card sets--in black or white groups within five color suits--combine to depict ancient Egyptian treasures (including mummies, of course). A descriptive guide accompanying the 45-card deck shows the 25 possible artifacts and identifies each of the treasures, including cat mummies, coffin lids, and a painted, earthenware canopic jar containing a mummified liver, circa 2000 B.C. This game is an excellent introduction to gin rummy, and children will appreciate the complexity of matching parts of pictures to form a whole image. Players will also enjoy the game's clever mimicking of an archaeological expedition with the dig (draw) and sift (discard) piles. Mummy Rummy is the winner of a Parents' Choice Award and a National Parenting Publications Honors Award. ... Read more Reviews (6)
