Editorial Review Spider-Man: The Movie brings your friendly neighborhood web slinger to life with engrossing realism, proving that a superhero game of such complex nature can be achieved with nearly flawless and nonintrusive gameplay. Be it wandering the city's environs in search of villains or just checking out your surroundings by web-swinging high above them, you truly can do whatever Spider-Man can. It's all here: high-flying aerial battles, the ability to web up and yank your enemies close for pummeling, and the capacity for crawling or web-zipping up, down, and over any surface--and that's just for starters. All in all, this is one involved game that does not fail to live up to the hype. The game parallels the motion picture's story line, steering you through a progression of challenges that begins with the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer, and ends with a final showdown with the Green Goblin. You begin as Peter Parker dressed in his wrestling costume and must defeat a variety of thugs throughout each level before advancing to the next set of challenges. The game gets progressively tougher as you encounter, in turn, Shocker, the Vulture, Scorpion, and, of course, the Green Goblin. Visually, Spider-Man is a treat: cityscapes unfold in realistic detail and are enhanced by sunlight shining between buildings; cutscenes offer seamless animation; interiors are painstakingly re-created; and Spider-Man and his enemies are well rendered, moving about the screen in clean fashion. As an added bonus, most characters are voiced by their movie counterparts, and the training mode features the sarcastic wit of Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. --Larry White Pros:

Editorial Review A 3-D action-adventure game starring everyone's favorite webhead,Spider-Man is quite a rarity--a superhero video game that's worth playing.Featuring an original story jam-packed with characters and locations from thecomics, and, more importantly, gameplay that does our hero justice, this is onetitle that won't disappoint Spidey fans. While Spider-Man's story line (told via a slide show of comic book panels)is linear, there's great freedom of movement within the game's 3-D indoor andoutdoor environments. True to comic book form, you can climb walls and travelabout webswinging, although the former can be disorientating in terms ofpoint-of-view, and the latter is often a leap of faith, as the game's shoddygraphics (even with the optional Expansion Pak) create a restricted field ofvision. In addition to being able to do all sorts of nifty things with yourwebspinners, Spidey's superstrength, superagility, and spider-sense (for whichyou'll want a Rumble Pak to feel the patented tingle) are also accounted for. Asfor his superhuman reflexes, well, that one's really up to you. --JoeHon Pros:

This game has below average graphics for the N64's power. 1 1/2 Star. The Plot Line is great and includes other marvel characters like Human Torch, Captain America, and the Punisher. 4 Stars The Fact that I beat it 6 times in 5 days makes it run out of webs in the middle of a 100-foot off the ground web sling. 0 Stars. Average: 2 stars I recommend Spider-Man: The movie which is out for GCN, PS2, and The X-Box.
What I next noticed was just how of an all-around solid game it was. I was completely enamored for the first three or four levels before I began to notice the occasional flaws and inconsistencies. The first level, just a really simple swing from building to building, is a testament to not only the beauty of the graphics, but how smooth the game runs, and just how fun it is. Even the voices of the characters were done beautifully, and original Spider Man creator Stan Lee's commentaries at the beginning of each level ('Looks like everyone's favourite wallcrawler is in a bit of trouble') was just a real cool touch. From there though, I began to discover little things about the game that just bothered me a bit. First was the occasional glitch in the game. Although their occurences were few and far between, they did ruin the mood of the game. Most of these glitches occured while using the dome of webbing to protect Spidey. Oftentimes the webbing would just randomly float in mid-air, just sitting there. But, no biggie, no games are perfect. Second was the weak storyline. I found it a little hard to understand what was going on throughout the game. The story just seemed to jump at random from being attacked by Rhino to fighting off symbiotes with the help of Venom. I was pretty confused at a couple points in the game, even after playing through a second and third time. Thirdly is how easy the game was. I had the game set on easy, so I can't make any conjectures on how the medium and hard settings are, but I was finished with the game in less then a day. I rented it Wednesday morning at noon, and had it beat after only about 5 or 6 hours of playing. However, even though it was pretty easy to beat, some replay value is given in attempting to go back through the levels and collecting classic issues of 'Spider Man' comic books in hidden spots. And finally, my last and biggest complaint is the cut scenes. Since I had seen the ending for the PSX version of the game while hanging around in 'Electronic Boutique' (some guy had no life and just had to go through and beat it all - surprisingly it only took him a half hour, because other people had already reached the point he started at), I was expecting the same thing from the Nintendo version. What was a brilliantly funny cut scene from PSX suddenly became a poorly directed slide show of the same scene with captions below the photos. And it wasn't just the ending either, every scene between levels was in the same form of a slide show with captions below the photos. Despite my complaints, I thought that this game was actually extremely fun to play and I'd still mantain that it's a solid game - if only somewhat more solid for PSX. I still do recommend Spider Man, because if nothing else, it's just a fun game that doesn't have too hard of a learning curve, and will pass the time exceptionally well. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Editorial Review Spider-Man wasa huge PlayStation hit (it subsequently appeared onboth the Dreamcast and PC) because it finally allowed superhero actiongames to get out of their 2-D beat-'em-up ruts and into the 3-D world. And now the original game's sequel is more than good enough to catchPlayStation gamers in the web once more. Enter Electro's story follows the plans of that nefarious,electricity-spewing bad guy Electro, who's trying to tap an energysource that'll make him much more powerful and dangerous. After atraining level that familiarizes you with the game's controls (and newabilities such as the web-grab, where Spider-Man can send out a web andpull an object back toward him), you must web-swing around New YorkCity and stop Electro, his goons, and various other villains fromSpidey's infamous rogue's gallery. The cast of heavies include theShocker, Hammerhead, the Sandman, the Lizard, and a few others from thefirst game. The plot this time out is a little tighter than the last game's mix ofstories, and the game draws on the villains' well-known personas tomake each encounter interesting. Again, Spider-Man creator Stan Leenarrates the story in his inimitable style, and the voice acting isstrong throughout. You can also seek out a few classicSpider-Man covers hidden throughout the game. Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro is a great sequel; it adds quite afew new tricks and villains, and succeeds in terms of story and plot.It does carry over some of the camera problems from the first game, itdepends a bit too much on puzzlelike gameplay, and the save system isstill stingy enough to be annoying (you can only save between levels),but webheads out there aren't going to care, and it's nice to see suchstrong properties are still being released for the good old PlayStationOne. --Bob Andrews Pros:

Editorial Review Whether you're a fan from the '60s or not even remotely familiar withthe Spider-Man comic, you will get caught in his web. You'll see that despite its few flaws and the limitations of the PlayStation hardware, Spider-Man is the best based-on-a-superhero video game ever released. A crime has been committed and (as often happens) our hero has been framed. As the game progresses, you'll find that all is not as it seems and that many of Spidey's enemies, including Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, and Rhino, are all out to squash the Spider's quest to clear his name. Fortunately, Spider-friends, such as Daredevil, Human Torch, and Punisher, are here to help Spider-Man and keep the story moving. Like the comics, ol' webhead can climb most walls and ceilings, swing from rooftop to rooftop and, of course, do whatever a spider can. With his constant webslinging and acrobatic hand-to-hand fisticuffs, it's easy to feel that you are Spider-Man. The characters and scenery are nicely re-created here by making great use of the aging PlayStation's graphics. Spidey's ability to climb walls and ceilings does present problems with camera angles from time to time, occasionally making it tough to watch Spidey as he fights his way through some of the game's levels. While it can be frustrating, the overall camera work and graphics of Spider-Man are still amazing. Also, Spider-Man's controls can at times be less responsive and accurate than they should be, and the music is surprisingly subdued and flat, but most true believers can bear these problems until Spidey saves the day. In fact, the gameplay is so good, most seasoned gamers will devour the game in day or two, which makes Spider-Man a woefully short game. Cherish the time you have in these red and blue tights; this game is escapism at its best. --Mark Brooks Pros:

Editorial Review Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace is the first Spider-Man game to be featured on the Game Boy Advance platform. Set in New York, the game lets you assume the role of Spider-Man as you take on supervillain Mysterio and his illusory tricks. You must fight a slew of Mysterio's sinister conspirators and gadgetry to get to the bottom of the plot and free New York from Mysterio's mind-warping grip. Special attacks, multiple power-ups, suit upgrades, and old Spidey standbys (like wall crawling and webslinging) make playing as Spider-Man a fan's dream come true. ... Read more Reviews (40)
Out of all the portable consoles in history, the Gameboy Advance, has probably the bestlineup of games I've seen, and you can addthis game to that list. ------ Peter Parker (Spiderman) is talking to hisgreat love Mary Jane, when he sees on the tv,that a great number of crimes are beingcommitted in New York. Spiderman then must try to stop the criminalsand try to bring peace and safety toNew York City.Spiderman though will have his hands, as hemust fight a number of formidabble and familiarenemies that Spiderman fans will recognizne. Even making the game that more challengingis the fact that in several areas of the gameSpiderman must rescue a group of hostages. Graphics 10: Spiderman games have come a long way sincethe first Spiderman came out from ParkerBrothers for the Atari Systems. From the Genesis system to Supernes, to Gameboy "Rhino", "Hammerhead" and others look likecomic book counterparts. There are really 3 great graphics area in the game, and they are done very well.First is the intro of the game which is excellently done with a nice blend of music.the intro looks extremely cool, because it looksvirtually an animation of the comic book. The 2nd graphics area is stats screen. Thestats screen reveals in what area Spiderman is,how much webbing Spiderman has left, and otherdetails. The 3rd area in the game are the missionand intermission screens. These scenes are all 2 dimensionally animated Sound and Music: 7 The sound and music in Spiderman, just likethe graphics for the game are extremely good,in fact it was better than I expected!!! Everything from Spiderman's "spider senses" to"Rhino" growl and killer attacks, all comewith their individual sounds. Overall the sound in "Spiderman MysteriosMenace " is very well done. The music is divided into different areas ofgame: The levels of the game, come with different tunes and soundtracks. The stat screen in the game also comeswith it's own music. The best music in the game, that I loved wasthe intro at the beginning, it mean it just really cool!! In fact, it had me jazzed upto play the game. -------------- I was extremely satisfied with the controlsfor this game. Unlike the Playstation and Dreamcast versions of Spiderman, which can get a bit frustratingthe control for "Spiderman Mysterio's Menace"is virtually perfect. Wow!!! Spiderman has a variety of moves, combos and First is Spiderman's web slinging. Simply by tapping the A button twice, Spidermancan swing from building to building with ease. You can also websling and attack enemies atthe same time!!! This has many advantages of the game, asmany enemies are at angles, or high altitudesin the game. Spiderman's combos, consists of a regular punch, Pressing the Start Button reveals the statsscreen which reveals, the area Spiderman is, along with his web supply, the areas Spidermanhas completed, and the number of hostages Overall, I was very pleased with the controls.Activision and Vicarious Visions did a greatjob in this area. ----------- I gave "Spiderman Mysterio's Menace" a 10 because virtually all areas of the gamewere excellent done. Activision has continually improved the Spiderman games that they done have done over years. There are also many challenging enemies in the game. I also like the fact, that game companies "Spiderman Mysterio's Menace" is just a greatgame, and I highly recommend the game toany Spiderman fan.

We now have Harry Potter Uno also, and it's almost as much fun, but nothing beats the Spidey version with its special "Spider Sense" card (when you play it you get to take a look at the entire hand of one of your opponents). What's more, the Spidey version comes in a durable metal tin, which is so important for keeping the cards corraled. We haven't lost one card, thanks to the tin. We love the high-quality art on the tin and the cards, too.(We'll probably never want to play ordinary Uno after having played this one.)But the best thing about the game is that it's just complex enough to be fun for everyone, but it's not too challenging for our (admittedly gifted) 5-year-old.He actually wins about half the time, even though neither of the kids has yet picked up on some of the finer points of strategy that are fairly obvious to the adult player.I really am not sure how the average 5-year-old would do with this game, but I suspect there would be more fun than frustration as long as his/her opponents are patient. This little gem was one of the best toy purchases we made last year, and I'm glad to see it's still available, because it makes a super gift for little (and big) Spidey fans. ...
