Editorial Review

While Thomas the Tank Engine and his various friends have been featured quite nicely in a variety of toys, games, stories, videos, books, and pajamas, it's as a train set that Thomas really makes the most sense. And this sprawling ensemble is certain to delight any Thomas fan. Measuring 62 by 90 inches when laid out in full, it features Thomas and several of his pals including Percy, Harold, Annie and Clarabel, Terrence, Trevor, and Cranky, all of whom are motorized. Tunnels, bridges, and houses add to the authenticity of the set as do three engine sheds positioned around a large turntable with directional switch. 26 pieces of road let you arrange the town according to the prescribed plan or design your own unique layout. --Charlie Williams ... 5-0 out of 5 stars greatest toy i have ever had
my son loves this toy so much even forgot his favorite icecream when he was playing. not only he loves this toy, i am crazy about this`too. we had a lot of fun since we got this toy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Crazy
My 3 yr old son is Thomas crazy. He has the wooden railway which he loves and we just recently bought this one. He seems to like the larger trains made by Tomy better than the wooden ones. I like this set, but I agree with previous reviewers that you'll have to find a way to re-configure it. It is VERY LARGE and my 3yr old tends to knock over and disconnect the track fairly frequently. The only other thing that I would add is that the box and picture of the vehicles is very misleading, 3 of the vehicles trevor, terrance and caroline are miniature. They are smaller even then both the wooden and metal trains by learning curve. This was a little upsetting to us because that was one of the reason we bought the set for the rare vehicles. All in all it most be pretty good because my sons plays with it from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed. You can hear him playing out the stories that he watches on the tapes. Also, although it is motorized you can put the trains in the off position and they can push it just like the wooden trains. We don't even put the batteries in anymore because like another reviewer we found that he just watched. It promtes much more imagination this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really keeps our 3 year old busy
Although this set took a while to put together, my son absolutely loves it.He received it as a gift from a friend and he plays and plays and plays with it.It really helps stimulate learning in different areas and he doesn't even know it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thomas
My 4 year old son really enjoys this toy!! It's not for hours on end but he enjoys the logs and the helicopter most. The durability is great because he has dragged the train all over the carpet lol. I would recommend this as a starter train set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Toy!
This is a very cute set! My 3 yr old loved to watch it, but we both grew tired of that after awhile. He prefers to push the trains himself. He can do that with the Tomy trains if switched to the off position, however this set is not compatable with the other Tomy trains in that you have to have the special freight car to trigger the different mechanisms. It is also a little difficult to combine this with some of the other Tomy playsets for this reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality productb that is well built!
This is a great toy that we got for our son. He has hours of fun just watching it go around and load and unload timbers. I like the well built design of the trains. I was most impressed with the design construction of the gear mechanisms in the trains. They are made to unspline the gear mesh when turned off. This way when your child pushes the train when it's off there is no chance of stripped gears and ruined motors. If this toy ever wore out or broke I would purchase a new one without thought. Great toy and the motion is fantastic! ... Read more

Watch out for falling rock! Railroad construction ahead!Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends Big Loader will bring out the train conductor in any child. When the big loader is running, use the control buttons on the track to make the train change direction. Itsy-bitsy engineers control whatever it does next. The track includes hoppers, loading docks, and transfer ramps. The motorized chassis fits under Thomas, Percy, and Terrance, the toys' included companions. After parents take a few minutes to read the simple instructions, make sure a 2-by-2-foot space is available for construction. Requires one AA battery for operation. --Andrea Linsky ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Never works!!!
I just spent an hour with my two boys (4 and 2) "playing" with this train set.I was able to put it together relatively quickly, despite the directions being perfectly unclear. But the trains don't work at all.The tops keep falling off the chassis, and we have to push Thomas up the ramp every single time; whatever is supposed to aid the train against gravity isn't working.I can sit there with the kids and repeatedly fix, push, pull, aid, and assist the trains, but the point was kind of for them to have something to do WITHOUT me.I'm going back to the wooden Thomas sets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk!
Waste of time and money.Very frustrating.Keeps jumping off the track.Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing at the store.I will be taking this piece of junk back!

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
After months of asking, I finally caved in and bought this set for my son's fourth birthday. It was tedious to put together and the pieces are poorly made. After finally getting the track assembled, my son was anxious to enjoy his new toy.I will say that it was somewhat entertaining to watch the train travel around the track a few times while changing to the different characters. The problem for me is that everytime my son accidentally touched or shifted slightly against the track there would be a malfunction where the train would go off the track or the top pieces of the train would fall off.The pieces are flimsy and my son became increasingly frustrated. My husband at one point had to tell my son to stay away from the toy and that he couldn't touch it, but to just simply watch it go around the track. If you want a "toy" that you can't engage in and do not get frustrated easily during the assembly process than this is the toy for you.MY son likes to actively engage in his play, so this didn't fit our needs. We finally put the pieces back in the box, and I told him we would return it for something else tomorrow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy and lovely toy
This is a lovely toy. It is sturdy and has been in the crib of all three of my children. The batteries last a long time. It has been on road trips with us and has worked well. It plays calming music and has lovely 'show' on the ceiling.

Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for road trips!
We attached this toy to the headrest right behind my 2 month old son's carseat so we could travel at night. He loved watching it! There are 2 adjustable straps on the back so the toy will hang securely back there. Luckily I have an older son to wind it back up for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps son happy at bed time
My son loves this toy!We got it when he was 2 months old and he loved it then, and he still loves it two months later. He gets two light shows every night, and he is almost always asleep by the end of the second light show.I would buy this again, and give it as a gift. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for other reasons
I agree that the toy doesn't not hold together very well, and the sounds the dolphins make are kind of strange. That being said, we love this toy.We use it for counting and colors and it's wonderful. Our 2 1/2 YO girl loves playing with it; it's her favorite tub toy.So, know that it's not a magical, musical tub toy, but it is a lot of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Toy
I disagree with many of the other reviews here.We just picked up this toy used, at a Thrift Store for a dollar, and it was well-spent.The dolphins, do indeed make sounds (whistles of differents tones) when you lightly tap their heads. The only time they don't make sounds is when they get too full of water and you just have to empty them out.As for the rings staying together, we are missing one, so I didn't know that the were supposed to form a big ring, but we build chains with them, and have had no trouble at all with them coming apart. My son is 6 months old and he just loves his dolphins. He hated baths until we brought these home! Now he squeals with excitement when we run the bath water and can't wait to get in the tub!

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed with toy
I bought this toy for my kids thinking that the music would be great but this toy does not make music at all.One would really have to strech the definition of "music".I was disappointed because the box makes it looks like it would be a great toy.My son got very irritated at the rings not staying connected.I returned the toy. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Loves It
This was the very first Thomas toy that we bought for my 2 year old.He now has several Thomas items and he still plays with it all the time (he even sleeps with it).The only bad part about it is that it is loud and annoying, but it does have an off switch to turn it off.

Overall, I think it was a great investment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tips over when turning
My 2 and 1 yr. old love to play with this but they get frustrated. My kids don't always turn in a perfectly wide arc which is what this toy is designed for. Sometimes they'll make a sharp turn in the opposite direction. After turning around, the toy tips over. They fix it but when they turn again it tips again. I've had to teach my daughter to just expect the thing to tip and have a good attitude about it instead of getting frustrated and crying about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Cute, But LOUD
This is a nice little train, although, it does tend to fall over a lot. When you pull the string it makes a chugging train sound then a loud horn noise. It's really really loud and scared my son the first few times. But now he seems to like the noise and occasionally dances to it, stangely enough. But for me, it's annoying. Thankfully there's an on/off switch. I would suggest this toy to die hard Thomas fans only. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Kid in every Adult
I bought this for a 1-year olds birthday about 7 years ago.My husband spent the month before the party, pulling the string. He was sad when I took it to the birthday girl.I looked high and low for another one for him. After about 8 months, I again found it.He loves it. It is such a stress buster as you simply gotta smile when you hear the Quack, quack, quack.

When my aunt and cousin (both adults) came to visit, they too fell in love with it.Unfortunately the store I had found it at was out again. This was 3 years ago.I found it again today and bought both the store had left.I plan to get some additional ones to have on hand.

I truly believe that every adult needs to "feed" the kid in him/her.So, if you think this toy is only for children 10 months - 5 years, think again.

5-0 out of 5 stars So popular
Who can understand the minds of children? I have 2 daugthers 4.5 and 2 years old. This toy has been a special favourite of theirs for quite some time. We only have one of it, so it has been an endless reason for crying and screaming because of its popularity. Both my wife and I are amazed that such a simple toy presents our girls with such seemingly endless joy and play. Yeah, the sounds get to you after a while, but they are certainly not the most annoying I have ever heard in a toy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I had it for both of my kids 6 and 1
It is a cute toy, when your child starts to walk they can learn how to pull it them selves. My 2nd child has been a crier, and I could pull it around and NO more crying. It is cute to pull around for your child and let them watch the ducks waddle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great Idea!!!
Both my boys are truely Thomas lovers.Everything is Thomas the Tank Engine. My children love this toy.We have two of them and I have purchased two additional ones for friends and family. This toy is compact, great for small children and I loved that the detachable pieces fit into the carrying case.We have taken these into restaurants, on vacation etc...It is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect "pocket" toy
This toy has been a lifesaver - always ready to go (the green plastic base doubles as a carrying case and everything fits inside), this is the toy that I grab in a hurry. It has been along with us to countless hospital waiting rooms, doctor's offices, long trips in the car, etc. etc.My son never seems to tire of it.Our Thomas doesn't wind up so well anymore, my son perfers to push him.We paid less than ten bucks for ours and it was well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun but the connectors are odd
My four year old really enjoys playing with this. There are five stand alone plastic sheds that you assemble (two sides and a roof) and then place over the track in the same manner that a tunnel goes over the track. There are five buffers that snap onto the back of the track and then each track connects to the turntable. The turntable has a crank that is easy for a child to turn.It also has a Y track that would connect into an existing set. This doesn't come with any trains or additional track.

I am only giving this four stars because the turntable is configured for four "standard" track connectors and six "diamond shape" track connectors. My son has a lot of the Tomy track and none of it has this "diamond shape" connector. If you try really hard you can jam a standard shape connector into a diamond connector, but I don't understand why all of the connectors on the turntable wouldn't be the standard shape. The track that is included for the sheds has three diamond and two standard connectors so you can connect all the sheds. But the remaining five connectors are three diamond and two standard.

Note, this is not compatible with the wooden track. You need to use the blue Tomy plastic track with this turntable.

In summary, my son really likes this, and it is a lot of fun for the money so I recommend it.I just wish that all of the connections were standard. ... Read more

What child who doesn't love Thomas the Tank's friendly face? The Thomas Medium set is a great introduction--or addition--to Thomas the Tank's world. The set comes complete with a train station, a traffic light, a little greenery and even a drawbridge. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas & Friends - Train Set
Bought this for my son for Christmas he is Four Years Old. He loved it. Setup was a snap (sorry no pun intended) only took 5 minutes. Only needs one AA battery goes in Thomas (just pull middle wheels down and lift off the top carriage).

The bridge is great, there is a switch to stop the train at the station and two props (tree and signal light). This set is extendable if you decide to do so in the future, which is great.

Recommend it, best train set for around (...).

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Train a Really Useful and FUN Engine
This Thomas the Train set is a huge hit with the 3 kids in our house: my girls, ages 2 and 4, and my husband! The interlocking track is easy enough for my youngest daughter to attach (and detach, which she prefers to do).The trains run on the track, on the floor, and even the carpet (slowly). The drawbridge works like a charm. My oldest loves the lever to stop one train (usually to cause a wreck with another oncoming train). The set comes with Thomas and cars Annie and Clarabel.Toys R Us had a sale, so we also bought a Percy, Gordon, and James. It's a good thing we did!Christmas Day my husband had trouble releasing the catch to install the batteries in Thomas and Percy. The instructions (graphics only, no words) were no help at all.Fortunately the batteries in Gordon and James are easily installed into their coal cars.We took the Thomas and Percy back to the store for help.We like this set so much we plan to buy additional track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of Hours of Fun
My 7-year old son still continues to play with this set and all the other related Thomas sets we have.We started collecting these pieces when he was 3 years old. He's been able to put this track together in so many different ways with little or no help from the start. He has a huge toybox full of this train set now. After 4 years, 2 of our 3 bridges broke after being stepped on.We have glued one back together and now it works just fine.None of the bridges have their sides anymore, but the trains work just fine and stay on the tracks very well.Only one piece of track has ever broken, which says a lot for it's durability. You have to be a little careful with the trains with the tenders, i.e. attached second car, like Gordon, Henry, etc.(Not included in this set). The batteries are placed in the tender and 2 wires connect the train front to the tender. If these wires get pulled roughly, the train will no longer work.As I said though, we've had this set for over 4 years and only lost a handful of trains. My son no longer watches Thomas videos or cares to spend a "Day out with Thomas", but he continues to play with this train set and ask for the newest pieces for Christmas and birthdays. We don't mind buying them either. It's a worthwhile gift to buy as it is durable and gets a lot of use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun but not compatible with wooden sets
This is a fun accessory for anyone who has the Tomy plastic Thomas trains. We got this for our son for his forth birthday and he really likes playing with it.There is a Y track that your child can use to direct the train onto two sets of tracks. When a train runs over the inner track, the track automatically raises up a bit to stop the train.Cranky then swings back and forth through about a quarter turn as if it is loading the train. The train is then released to continue on its way.Note that you can't move cargo up and down, only back and forth. As such, you can't raise or lower any cargo.

The instructions to assemble this are a little weak. You have to insert the top part of Cranky into the base. You need to be careful to align the hex shaped shaft into the base or Cranky will not be able to turn.It took me about three tries to get this right.

Note that the track is not compatible with the (Learning Curve) wooden sets. The connectors are designed differently for the plastic set.If you are not familiar, there are two common types of Thomas sets. The wooden sets are best known. They are a lot of fun if your child likes to push trains along on the track.Tomy makes a plastic Thomas set that uses battery operated trains that run on blue plastic track. These sets are more fun if your child wants a battery operated set because they go faster than the wooden battery trains. Both types are fun to play with, but the tracks are not interchangeable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Micro Pets
Well my daughter and I have been going to Burger King to get these Micro Pets out of the Kids Pack, and she just loves them. She has started to collect them and just the other day she was lucky enough to match up the Micro Pets with green eyes. She was so excited because she got 2 out of 400 of these Micro Pets that when they are close together their eyes light up green instead of red. These Micro Pets are fun for the kids and cheap for the parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Micropet Crazy!
My seven year old daughter got a Micro Pet III Bundle as an early Christmas present from her Nanna. Unfortunately, it came in a cardboard shipping box, and had so instructions or an introduction whatsoever. My daughter didn't know they could actually do anything, she thought they were plastic figurines. My three year old son pressed down a button on one of the Mice's heads and it's eyes lit up and it walked forward, making sounds. My daughter turned all of them on, it was wild on my kitchen table! As soon as she ignored some of them, (the only one she paid attention to was the unicorn - go figure) the dogs would howl, the cats would sound a little angry, it was hilarious! She gave half of them to her brother and she kept half.

One of them looks like our cat, Ramona, grey with stripes. My daughter kept that one, the unicorn, the pink mouse, the koala, and the brown collie. My son got the rest. He's delighted! These keep the children delighted for hours. Enjoy! ... Read more

My son (3 1/2) just received this as a Christmas present and it is a huge hit! There are 9 pieces (a number he can count to make sure he has all of them) and a "screwdriver." It's a pretty cool toy - the screws are attached and your child needs the screwdriver thingy to tighten them down or loosen them (makes a click sound when tight enough). Once all assembled, there is an on/off button on the bottom to have Thomas go!My son LOVES the fact that he can build it by himself as well as take it apart by himself.Wish there were more toys like this one! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed design, but still useful
My 19 month old daughter received this as a gift. She loves it.Unfortunately, since she's only 19 months old, the remote control is a little advanced for her. However, she carries Thomas around, she tries to push him (which doesn't work and may/may not break it eventually), occasionally lays Thomas on his side to watch what the remote does with his wheels, and more often hands him to me to play with.

The remote is poorly designed for a child. The 2 separate directional controls (forward/backward and left/right) are set in a box that is too large for a small child's hands.Additionally, the left/right control only functions if the forward/backward control is in use, which for a 2-3 year old child is far to complicated to understand. When left/right does not do anything, frustration begins to set in.

I agree with another reviewer that the remote seems to momentarily stop working. This again is confusing for a child. Also, the range is limited. It says 15 feet, but I've not gotten it to work past 10-12.However, as an adult, it works fine for me and I enjoy "chasing" her with it.

I know that, in the Thomas scheme of things, Annie and Clarabel are box cars, however, this toy would have been much more fun if the cars were open to allow the child to put things in and move around.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother!
I wish I would have taken heed of the reviews written here & not purchased this. But I gave in to my son, who REALLY wanted it.He doesn't want it anymore though, because the thing doesn't work!Oh sure, little Thomas huffs & puffs away at first - but after a minute or two of play, game's over. And Thomas doesn't really "join" with Annie & Clarabel - it's a magnet. It's cute but it doesn't work the way it claims it does and therefore it is definitely a complete and total rip off!

Even if it worked...The engine loses the signal from the remote sporadically, no matter how close you are to it.Plus, for a three year old, it is very difficult to tell which way the remote should be held;up is down, down is up.In order to back the engine up to connect to the cars, the connectors (magnets)must be perfectly aligned.I was never able to do it without manually pushing the connector into place;I can't imagine a three year old being able to do it.Any time you go in reverse, the train goes into a sequence of catching & releasing the cars; my nephew couldn't understand why every time he backed up, the cars fell off!Boo! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars so cheap! so cute!
my little babies r sooo cute! and their price is amazing! if u go 2 toys r us u can et a my little baby 4 only $1.99!!! i have 4 my little babies and im not even a bit sick of them! they can blink, dance, sing, eat, close their eyes and go 2 sleep, and their bow (or hat) lights up! also, when u say "my sweet baby" 2 her, she (or he) will respond, "haai!" when u say other things 2 her, her bow will light up 2 show that she has heard u! when u put the baby in your palm and rock her back and forth, she will giggle and laugh. if u lay the baby on her back, she will sing a lullaby, close her eyes, and go 2 sleep. if u clap ur hands 5 times, the baby will sing her abc's! if u dont take care of the baby 4 a couple minutes, it will start 2 cry. then u have 2 take care of her until she stops crying. my little babies r educational because it teaches u how 2 take care of a real baby, and it teaches u that babies need plenty of attention. i luv my little babies!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute fun at a small cost
My girls each received a My Little Baby from the Easter Bunny. They love them! They are 6 and 3.The youngest just wants to "feed" hers but my 6 year old can get the doll to interact with her. While the babies are a little loud for their size, they are by no means distracting or even annoying. And the best part is that they can be shut off---unlike other electronic interactive toys.Pretty cute toys for minimal cost!

1-0 out of 5 stars My Little Baby: Bailey is not worth it!!
My daughter recieved My Little Baby as a Christmas present. She looked it over, but quickly put it down. The little doll ALWAYS cries, and is often put in the closet to avoid the noise. The price of the little doll is not expensive, but considering my it was never played with and avoided, it was a waste of money. I discourage anyone from buying this item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I need to add stars for durability!!!
Wow , this is one strong, fun toy. Both my kids have spent hours playing with it. We have had it a for more than a year now and it has been held to the ground, so it makes that horable clicking noce that battery power vechicles make when you stop them going, it has been thrown around by an adventurous one year old. AND it has spent the night in the swimming pool!!!! and 16months after buying it we are still using the same batteries, even after the pool incident :-)

Both my kids 4 1/2 and 18 months just can't get enough of this toy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Thomas ever!
My daughter has loved Thomas and his friends since she was just a year old.Now three, she loves to add another train to Thomas each time he goes around the track. This has taught her that Thomas has limits, just like everyone else. She has learned about batteries and turns him off to save his energy. She also pushes trains around the track and races Thomas. This was by far, the BEST "Thomas" purchase we have ever made! All of these trains are very well made, sturdy and best of all - guaranteed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This train is GREAT
I bought the medium set for my son about 10 months ago. It's become his favorite toy.Unfortunately, the THOMAS car has done a disappearing actand my 2.5 year old has not accepted the Learning Curve Thomas as asubstitute.I've had to purchase the Thomas cars to replace the missingone.DEFINATELY recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun!
I just purchased this for a birthday present. I took it out of it's little container and have been playing with it ever since, isn't that terrible?
It's so cute. The little baby sings, cries, crawls, kicks her little feet, giggles and sucks her bottle. It's a great little doll to take along on car trips or to keep a child occupied ( or perhaps even an adult.)
I recommend this doll. It's cute, it's fun and that's what it should be all about.
