Many high-tech toys start with a fun and fascinating idea only to make it frustratingly complicated in the execution. Leave it to LEGO to make a technologically advanced toy fun to play with. The enormous 718-piece LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System lets you construct a variety of moving robot vehicles and then program them from your Windows 98- or Windows Me-compatible computer. The robots are all based around a bright yellow basic unit, which serves as the functional heart of whatever is being built. The brick receives commands from the computer via an infrared tower unit. The computer interface is incredibly user-friendly and intuitive. What's most impressive about the system, however, is the variety of robots that can be built. There are detailed instructions for each one, and since these are LEGOs, builders are free to come up with an endless variety. --John Moe ... Read more

Outfitted in orange and purple, this electronic learning system for preschoolers plugs directly into a television, and at first take looks a lot like a video-game console. Insert any of Vtech's "Smartridges" into the unit for lessons on language, math, phonics, problem-solving, music, and more. Children can choose between two difficulty levels. Included are a large joystick, adjustable to right- and left-handed kids, and an Alphabet Park Adventure cartridge; other cartridges are sold separately. There's also a storage compartment on top that holds up to six cartridges. The system can run on either three C batteries or an AC adaptor; strangely, neither are included. --Andy Boynton ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This
This started out to be a wonderful toy for my 4 year old son.But after a month (and after I'd spent quite a bit of money on the cartridges) the problems started. The power goes on & off at will. When I called the V-tech 1-800 number they walk me through the re-set process which takes 2 minutes & is a pain the he heiney. And within a few days it happens again. What a pain...

2-0 out of 5 stars vsmile a bit disappointing
I bought the vsmile thinking it looked cute and would be a great way for my child to learn. From the beginning, the controller had a loose part rattling around in it.After about two weeks the "enter" button kept getting stuck.I had to pay shipping to send it back, but it was replaced with a new one.I will be calling tommorrow to have the unit replaced.Often the power button would stay on and now after replacing batteries, the power won't even come on.A bit disappointed at this point because my child rarely got to play with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's like having a live friend
My daughter wanted to tell everyone how much she likes her Tamagotchi: I'm nine and I have two Tamagotchi. They are SO cool!! They eat, poop, play, can be praised or put in time out, get sick, have their lights turned off, and interact with each other. The best things about the interacting is that they can exchange gifts, compete in races, and get married. You will also find a friend list, that will show how much your Tamagotchi likes every other one it's met. It will hold up to 50 friends! You can have generations after generations, pick what names you want, and if it dies you can reset it. They even have a heartbeat.

One of my friends at school accidentally left hers in her pocket, and it went through the whole washing machine cycle....and STILL WORKS! Wow.

This all sound like it's going to take alot of training to work. But you only need 3 simple buttons to do all this. It also has a built in clock. They're the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why do kids like this?
At first my mother is like," Why are you going to get this Tamagotchi for? Everytime we buy you a new toy you play with it the first few days and then never ever play with it again." Well i promised her that i would play with it all the time and that I would take care of it just like a real pet. Also, I told my mother that I wanted a dog pet. My mom said that if I could prove with my tamagotchi that I could take care of my pet she will buy me a dog. So I got my Tamagotchi I was so excited! weeks and weeks passed and I enjoyed it Alot. My mom said that she had never seen me like a toy so much. I responded that to me MY Tamagotchi is like a pet and that I didn't want I dog no more I just wanted my Tamagotchi! Tamagotchi is my special digital pet. I hope just like I enjoyed my Tamagotchi named cutie You will enjoy it to You'll see the fun it is to have A TAMAGOTCHI!!!

    Editorial Review

This durable little unit packs in a lot of functions, all of them eminently kid-friendly. Most basically, it’s a tape player that can be easily operated with big, colorful buttons, but it’s also a kind of karaoke machine, letting kids use the included microphone to sing along with the music, or sing a cappella. As if that wasn’t enough, there are multiple settings to warp your voice to sound like a monster, robot, bunny, or Martian. You might have to use your imagination to hear how some of the settings sound like what they’re supposed to (and what does a bunny sound like anyway?), but once you start experimenting with Voice Warp, it’s addictive fun even if you’re a big person. Don’t worry though, you can turn the filter off to hear your normal voice. --David Stoesz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very durable
I have the older version of this player. My daughter got it for Christmas when she was 3 and she still plays with it. (she is now 10) Her brother has also used it and now my Granddaughter has started to play with it. It has been bounced up and down stairs and even banged against the wall a time or two. It still plays and sounds good. My kids have enjoyed it so much that my Granddaughter is getting one of her own for her birthday this month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Voice Machine!
We bought this recorder for our son when he turned 3. I wanted him to have freedom to play his own tapes and also the fun of doing the cool voices. I didn't realize just how much he would actually like this. Not only does he carry it around and talk on it constantly- so does his 1 yr. sister (and his parents, too!). We have laughed so much playing with this as a family. I was hesitant about purchasing this at first but now I am so glad I did!

2-0 out of 5 stars Playback broke very quickly
As at least one other person noted, there is sometimes too much feedback when singing in to the mike. The unit seams built very strongly and is very heavy (too heavy to be carried and played with at the same time), but after very little use, the play button has stopped functioning on the tape player. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Nemo
My son loves this game. He likes to read with it. I think it is a nice addition to the collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game !
My 4YO son loves this cartridge. The children have a choice of reading the Nemo story or playing one of four games. My son does not really like the story, but it is cute. Admittedly it is difficult for an electronic toy to beat mom's reading!

The games are great. They all have multiple skill levels and are fun and challenging. I often have to force my son to let his Leapster "rest awhile". His favorite game is trying to find the fish in the deep dark ocean. On level 2 words are displayed and you have to find the fish by listening for where the word sound is the loudest. Unfortunately, there are a limited number of fish, but my kid hasn't noticed, he is happy every time he finds one. And, instead of sounding out the A like they do with the other letters, they say "Ay".

The Nemo cartridge also has a hide-n-seek game which teaches comprehension skills. Various Nemo characters and props appear in bubbles and the Leapster asks a question such as "Who helped Nemo escape from the tank?" and the child would need to select the "Gill" bubble. I haven't seen logic games like that on the other cartridge we have.

Overall, the characters are cute, the games are educational and my kid loves it. I'd give this more stars if that were possible! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Batteries
I have used Ray-O-Vac Alkaline batteries for years in Toys, Radios, and Flashlights and they have always worked great, compared to low budget store bands and cheap "Heavy Duty" batteries that run out of juice quickly.

I like Ray-O-Vac because many times they are priced lower than the overhyped Duracell and Energizer batteries and work just as well.

The best thing is they are still being made in the USA, other famous brands are now making thier Aklaline batteries in Mexico, China and other countries. So support a company that still manufactures batteries here.

I guess the only "fun" you can have with these batteries by themselves is if you lick the end of a new 9-Volt! Real fun! Zapp!

3-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
Batteries rule! When I don't feel like plugging something in, I totally turn to batteries.I'm all, like, "hey, batteries, why don't you give power to this object?"And the batteries are all, like, "OK, Chris.Just put us in the right way, and we'll do our stuff."And then I'm, like, "of course I'm going to put you in the right way. What am I, some kind of idiot?"And the batteries say, "Of course not, Chris. We were just reminding you--"And then I say, "No, I know what you were doing batteries, and I don't appreciate it.You think you're the boss of me?You don't pay my bills."To which the batteries usually have no response.Ha!Stupid batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Batteries for a Great Price.
As much as I like the Engergizer Bunny, I think Rayovac is becoming my favorite brand of batteries. They last just as long as any of the other major brands (Engerizer, Duracel, etc) and are less expensive. Plus, Rayovac often has special packs you can buy giving you even more bang for your buck. In short, these are some great batteries for a great price. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Pixter is like a personal digital assistant (PDA) for kids. But instead of storing boring appointments and phone numbers, they get to draw, do puzzles, and learn a little, too. The Pixter is about the size of a small book, and has a pretty solid weight to it. It's made out of brightly colored and durable plastic. The main action of this toy is drawing with an attached stylus. The Color Pixter offers much better graphics then the black and white version, which comes in handy with activities like Paint-by-Numbers and Connect-the-Dots. You can draw a picture free form, or you can use one of the starter backgrounds. There are tool buttons, like on a PDA, that give you access to fun stamps, special effects, and the eraser button. You can also save your creation in the Pixter's memory. There are some boppy tunes playing along with all this creative activity, but luckily for parents, there's also a jack for headphones and a volume adjuster. An expansion slot on top of the Pixter accepts ROM-based expansion cards that contain additional software and games. Requires 4 "AA" batteries. (Not included.) --Megan Sullivan ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy Pixter...Go for a Leapster
My 3-year-old loves her Leapster and plays with it in the car on long trips as well as in the house when I have to do things that leave her on her own. That's why, when I saw what looked like really fun and educational games for the Pixter, I put it on her wish list for her birthday. It'll be twice as much fun when there are more games from which to choose, I thought. But it's turned out to be a major disappointment. The screen is grainy, the interface is not intuitive, and one really has to press hard to get the screen to recognize the stylus. It's not easy even for an adult! The drawings skip and you can't drag items once they're placed: You never know where they're going to be centered before you place them. The games are not as educational as those on the Leapster, either. We bought Global Passport, Creative Genius, Barbie Fashion Show, Pet Shop, and Symphony Painter (that one is the worst!). She's using the Pet Shop a little, but that's it. Don't waste your money. Go for the Leapster...It's elegant and fun with a clear picture and sound. Now I wish I'd taken to heart the previous reviewer who bought the Leapster instead because I'm stuck with all this expensive useless nonsense. I had also bought the math, Barbie writing and Clifford cartridges, but I'm going to return those because they were bought in a brick and mortar store and haven'tyet been opened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
How cool is this?! A color computer for little hands. It is a great set.The game cartridges that go along make it just as exciting as any gaming system. The basics to it are drawing and other artistic works such as stickers, shapes and fill-in colors. My son got one at the age of 4 and loved it.He broke the first one by falling on the screen, but we bought a new one because of the use of the first one. Now, nearly 2 years later, he is expanding his artistic talents by drawing with different styled lines, creating his own coloring themes and the like. Works great, day or night, as the screen is lit.We often take ours in the car because of the headphone option and volume control.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get a Leapster instead
I was very disapointed in the Pixter. We returned ours and got a Leapster. The graphics and controls are so much better on the Leapster and the games are much more fun and educational. Also the Leapster is much more intuitive, a child can pick up a Leapster and figure everything out - there is even a "hint" button if the child gets stuck. A child that gets stuck with the Pixter can only look at the grainy screen and wonder where they went wrong. This toy is not worth the money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
Battery is way overpriced. Contact Battery Store near you! I did and found this same exact battery type(2-6volt Batteries) for much less. While there they told me I could use a low amp 12v Deep Cycle battery instead. It did take some time wiring (FUSED LINK IS A MUST) but is well worth it. Lasts all day and you can charge it at a 2 amp "trickle charge" with a "amp selectable" car battery charger. All told it cost me less than $60 for everything. It now longer just "Takes Up Space".

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery stinks!
Our battery quit recharging after about a year.It is very dissappointing to charge a battery for hours and then have to tell your little one that it didn't work.It has been difficult to find another battery.I thought the Fisher price 12-volt would work but it did not connect. Apparently, you have to buy this brand, which, by-the-way, cost about a third of the cost of our tractor! What can you do?

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST follow the directions to the T!
We have this battery and it works great. We were very skeptical because of all the bad reviews. However, if you follow the instructions to the T it works great. The initial charge MUST be 18 hours. We did ours 24.You CANNOT run this battery completely dead.Once you see the toy start to lose it's speed where first is really doggy, then you must take the battery out and charge it.Again, it must be charged the entire cycle of 18 hours. We have been following these instructions (which are the manufacturers) and it works great. My son can get about 3 hours if running it nonstop.Which he has done a few times.Don't try to quick charge this because it is not made to do that. Also, you must charge it once every month when it is not being used (i.e, winter months).Again, the instructions per the manufacturer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
My daughter received this as a Christmas present and has been singing ever since. She absolutely loves this karaoke machine. She says it is so much "prettier" than other karaoke machines that she has seen. Her only problem so far, is that she is in 1st grade and she can't read fast enough to keep up with the words on the screen, so I'm hoping this will improve her reading skills. The reading thing doesn't bother her though, she just improvises. Two microphones make it alot of fun to share with friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was the only toy the kids played with at Christmas
This was a great buy.I have a 3yr old and a 5 1/2 yr old. When this gift was opened they went crazy for it. It took only about 3 minutes to set it up and they kids were playing with it.My husband and i had to peel them away to finish openeing the rest of the gifts under the tree.

We plugged it into the TV, that took 5 seconds to do all the cables are right with it and color coded so they just pop right in like the camcorder.Although the screen on the machine is black and white the music on the tv is bright colors with pictures (we bought the princess songs to go with it).

My husband has since taken over the machine and tells the kids it's his "turn".I think he liked it almost to much.

This machine is not ment to be a professional type of machine but if you have kids who just want to have fun this is it.Two microphones with very long cords.I would buy it again, no regrets at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars much better
as in the title (advanced mission) is the main feature of the game. instead of shooting only 1 space at a time like in classic battleship you get weapons for most of the ships! for example submarines have sonar which scan 9 spaces for ships but doesn't give the exact coordinate have two torpedos that fire horizontally or vertically down one row or across a column till it hits. the destroyer can hit 3 spaces at once horizontally or vertically and aircraft carrier can hit 5 spaces at once. also you can launch 2 recon planes off of the aircraft carriers. a recon plane is used to scan a small area(4 spaces) each for ships and gives exact coordinates when. although useful, it takes 2 turns to launch the plane or move it to another point and scan. of course both players get AA guns to shoot down those nosy planes. finally the battleship has the most devastating weapon in the game- the tomahawk missile. only can be used once and hits 9 spaces at once. because it is a computer that stores your ships' position if you play against the computer (you can) the computer always hits your ships when using a special weapon. the use of strategy gets BATTLESHIP 5 stars for educational value but overall the game got 3 stars because the hit and miss pegs are incredibly hard to remove and sometimes need to be removed with pliers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool twist on classic battleship
I bought this game for my son but both he and I love the game.It takes the basic battleship game and adds some complexity and variety by letting you choose from among several modes of play. The salvo mode lets you attack your opponent one space at a time, but the advanced mode is really our favorite. In this mode each of your ships has a set of missles that allow you to attack groups of squares in different patterns. The submarine, besides having two torpedoes, can be used to search for the opponents ships. The more you play the game, the more sophisticated the strategy gets. For example, you have to decide whether to use your assests to scan for the enemy ships, or to use your weapons before your ships can be detected and sunk.It is an easy game to learn and we have had hours of fun with it.My son's friends come to the house and want to play this game instead of computer games!

The only negative about the game is that it is really "chatty".Every time you make a selection of your weaponry, you will hear a rather long (5 - 10 second) soundtrack telling you your weapons are ready to fire.If you play the game a lot, these soundtracks slow the game down and become moderately annoying.Other than this minor annoyance, the game has been great fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a 5 yr old too...
My daughter is in kindergarten and she is only 5 years old. She enjoys the game a great deal. When she plays the game I can hear her laughing, counting and spelling. She enjoys this game and loves the fact that she can switch players, she can choose from spiderman, spidergirl and wolverine. There is a part of the game where they are in the grocery store they learn about produce and different section of the grocery store. She likes to come to the store and show me when the fruit section is compared to where the meat section is. Best of all for me is that she is having fun while she learns. The game is good for both girls and boys. My nephew also enjoys the game and he is also five years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours and Hours of fun and learning!
This game offers a little more of a challenge then some of Vsmiles first games. My 6 year old daughter loves playing it and has already learned so much from it. I often hear her spelling the words along with the game as she moves from area to area.It is definatly one of her favorite games by far!

    Editorial Review

Your Barbie fan can create home videos with the Barbie Wireless Video Camera. The frosted-pink camera, which comes with a detachable, handheld microphone; a tripod; a receiver unit; and a blank videotape, connects to your TV and VCR to transmit and record home videos. The camera itself is a compact and sturdy image transmitter, and doesn't actually do any recording. You'll need your VCR to do that. It's got a viewfinder, an adjustable hand strap and a built-in condenser mike, as well as a jack for the external mike. You can use the camera in two ways: to transmit live audio and video directly to your TV, or to record directly to your VCR while transmitting to your TV. The camera can be set up on a tripod. Although this camera can't be used outside or anywhere there isn't a TV or VCR, it could provide lots of fun at birthday parties and other family events. Requires six AA and two AAA batteries (included). --M. Sullivan ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This CAMERA destroyed my TV
In just 1 afternoon of use, this camera caused my 27 inch TV to have permanent damage to the picture tube. There is now a giant discolored ring across the entire screen. No kids toy should be able to burn a giant discolored ring into a television picture tube!Avoid this at all costs or face trashing your TV! And, there wasn't anything in the instructions that stated that anything like this could happen.

    4-0 out of 5 stars 2 players= 2 joysticks
I read one of the earlier reviews that suggested not to get the second joystick, but I ended up buying it anyway. I am so glad I did for several reasons:
    1. you cannot select 2 players w/o having a second controller
    plugged in.
    2. not having to pull one child off the system to allow the other child to have a turn.
We have almost every game for this system, and now both children can enjoy it:)

2-0 out of 5 stars JOYSTICK DILEMA
I BOUGHT THE V.SMILE SYSTEM FOR MY 3 YEAR OLD FOR CHRISTMAS THE GAMES ARE EDUCATIONAL AND SHE ENJOYS THE SYSTEM BUT IM DISSAPPOINTED THAT THE JOYSTICK HAS MALFUNCTIONED SO QUICKLY MY DAUGHTER GETS FRUSTRATED BECAUSE SHE CAN'T MOVE LEFT,RIGHT,UP OR DOWN. I E-MAILED VTECH WITH THE PROBLEM AND STILL HAVE NOT GOT A RESPONSE FROM THEM ITS GOING TO COST ME $14 PLUS SHIPPING TO PURCHASE ANOTHER JOYSTICK WITH THE HOPES THAT IT WILL WORK AND NOT MALFUNCTION LIKE THE FIRST ONE

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Joystick
This joystick is well-designed and great for little kids. The colored buttons flash when you're supposed to use them, the main button is big enough so that even very yound kids can be successful using it, and the cord is really long so you can sit anywhere.Even though my three kids are all right-handed I think it's cool that the stick can be reversed for left-handed kids.

One reviewer mentioned the second joystick isn't necessary for two player games.I agree that it shouldn't be necessary but it actually is necessary in the games we've played.Instead of two players playing at the same time, they take turns (this is how 2-player games work in The Lion King and Alphabet Park Adventure). The fact is that the players can't simply pass the same joystick back and forth. The second joystick is required.

I would have liked it if the V.Smile system and the joystick were designed like other gaming systems, whereby if you yank on the controller it will easily detach from the system before the console falls off of, say, a shelf or a tv.That would have been a good feature for a game designed for young kids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STUFF
I purchased this for my 3 yr old, and she LOVES it--she just had a preschool screening and they said that she is doing Kindergarten level skills--It is all due to the Leapster--

She loves the games, The princess songs and games are great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I just bought this for my 3 year old and I have to say that compared to the other games, this one is not great at all. My daughter finds it too difficult and I think the games are boring. The Dora and Nemo games are far superior to this one and my daughter has played with those two games on and off for over a month. I'm glad I got this on sale because it didn't hold my daughters attention for even 5 minutes- I'm hoping that it will be more fun when she gets a little more coordinated but I don't think so. ... Editorial Review

With classic electric guitar styling and enough special effects to create a lot of excitement, this clever electric guitar starter kit is a perfect option for aspiring young rock musicians to gain their chops. The sound produced by the instrument is impressive for its fairly basic construction, not quite of the performance quality of a Fender Stratocaster but plenty good enough for starters. A quality pickup and tremolo bridge allows young axe-slingers to try out their rock star licks. This is also a convenient way to get started in music as everything you might need is included: case, guitar strap, strings, picks, and even a small practice amp. A booklet on how to learn while you play is also featured. --Charlie Williams ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lil' Quad charger
After many failed attempts to find the right charger for the lil' quad, I finally came across a website to get the right one.Go to 1-800-sunbeam.com. It is the type A for the toddler series.Hope this helps some of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Powerhouse
My son recently received a Power Wheels jeep that had been in use for over 3 years before he got it.The batteries had not been charged as specified in the instructions, and they died shortly after he started using it.The jeep couldn't run on concrete, much less on grass.

I replaced both existing batteries with these, which incidentally are a different colour from the picture, and the jeep now runs fine on most surfaces.

It requires 18 hours charging time before you can use the batteries, so be prepared for some impatience before the vehicle can actually be used. You have to charge them after each use, and also once a month if the vehicle is not in use, at 16 hours each time.

Tech support from Fisher Price is non-existent in my part of the world, where 800 numbers are not accessible, because their site doesn't have a customer service or tech support e-mail address listed.I needed important information, because I learned that the model I have was recalled for electrical problems, and I wanted to see exactly which parts needed to be fixed to solve the problem.

I'm sure that these batteries will last a long time with proper care, but wish the tech support was better

Even electronic toys have gone extreme. Kids love the original Bop It, an electronic toy that challenges response time to pull, twist, and bop different parts of the toy. The Extreme 2 version adds two more tasks, more sounds, and a taunting, smart-aleck announcer who directs the game. As you get better, the game moves faster until you miss a beat and lose, accompanied by a fair amount of noise and ridicule from the toy. People who don't think they'd ever want to play Bop It Extreme 2 won't be able to put it down; it instills a compulsive need to bop till you drop. It can be played in a group and makes a good party game--even for serious adults. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

This is a fantastic game! It is a fast and furious challenge of reaction times & can be played alone, with a partner or in a group.Great for bored kids (or adults)!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could play to a higher score!
This game is very fun. It helps to to clear my mind. The down side is that it stops at 250. I've reached 250 a few times wanted to see if it was just a mistake but nope it only goes to 250. Other than that great for the younger kids helps with listening and motor skills. As far as us adults who play, the game needs to go higher than 250. Overall good fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars This game is for Christmas - not for Life
Hours of addictive fun for all the family.Best used with some headphones if gran keeps nagging you to eat more cakes at a family gathering; which can be off putting to say the least!
I have stated that "This game is for Christmas -not for life" because it only you allows you to get up to 250ish and then it stops - Challenge over - motivation to play it GONE!
However practising to get up to 250 is great fun.Recommended.
