Editorial Review "Rut-roh!" There's nothing more frightening to Scooby-Doo than losing his munchies. Kids can help him and his human companions figure out a culinary mystery using LeapPad's multisensory, experiential learning interface. In Scooby-Doo and the Disappearing Donuts, kids see, hear, say, and touch throughout the book, making it easier to retain and enhance oral, vocabulary, and phonics skills while developing concrete reading-comprehension skills. It's simple to use (just insert the cartridge and book into a LeapPad, and use the attached stylus to hear information), but this system is an innovative technology that provides entertaining, effective learning, designed by a Stanford-trained reading expert. As well, the system has been credited with the TMA's Educational Toy of the Year and People's Choice awards. Two notes: Make sure the LeapPad book you get is appropriate for the child's educational level; this one should be a challenge for kids up to age 6. As well, know that some LeapBooks work on both LeapPad and LeapPad Pro, like this one, but some books only work with one system. --Diane Beall ... Read more Reviews (18)
I give 3 stars for durability, as I will for all Leap Books, only because the book does not provide storage for the cartridge. It sure would be nice if the books had small plastic sleeves for the related cartridge. We have a number of books and keeping the books and cartridges together are a little tough. The chances of losing the small cartridges will keep my durability rating lower than 5. Also, the 3 stars for durability is related to a design "flaw". The wire from the pen and the bottom of the book are constant fighting for space. To turn the page, without possibly bending the page, requires you to hold the wire down so it doesn't interfere with the page. Easy enough for an adult to do, however my 5 year old doesn't remember to hold the wire down all the time. 50% of all of our pages have creases in the bottom of the pages...all in the same spot!

Editorial Review Who can explain the never-ending popularity of Scooby-Doo? Though he was the last "cast member" added to the now-classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon show about crime fighting teen squadron, Mr. Doo was clearly the breakout star. This charming sleeping bag, intended more for sleepovers than legitimate outdoor camping, features Scoob blowing bubbles with the familiar dopey expression on his face that fans have come to know and love. The bag is purple with a purple interior, measure 30"x 57, made of polyester, and is 100% machine washable. Both boys and girls will love this sleeping bag if they can just keep it away from those meddling teenagers. --Charlie Williams ... Read more Subjects: 1. Animals

Editorial Review Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle is part of LeapFrogs range of interactive books designed to be used with their LeapPad learning system. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and youre ready to start. This particular title is recommended for children at stage 2 of the LeapPad library, which is children between 6 and 8 years old. The story itself features the popular cartoon character Scooby-Doo and his friends and is 55 pages (8 chapters) long--an ideal length for young readers starting to read by themselves. Viewers of the Scooby-Doo TV series wont be surprised to learn that Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle closely follows the same story format. The gang is driving though a dark and stormy night (what else?) when the Mystery Machine gets a puncture. Going to the nearest house for help (which turns out to be the usual spooky Gothic mansion), the gang is invited to stay for supper by the owner, Clift Montgomery (like the actor Montgomery Clift--get it?). It turns out that Clift has recently agreed to donate the house to the local council as a museum. Their fellow dinner guests include various prominent local citizens who all have their objections to the plan. Clifts sudden dramatic disappearance gives the gang a new mystery to solve, although as always Scooby requires bribery in the form of his favorite Scooby Snacks before hell join in. Naturally, when the villain is eventually unmasked, his parting riposte is, "I would have gotten away with it if it werent for those kids and their pesky dog." The LeapPad comes with a special touch-sensitive pen--follow the story by using it to touch the words on the page. The story is read aloud by a male American voice, which can sound rather stilted during the dialogue between characters, especially Shaggy and Scooby, who have their own distinctive styles of speaking. Touch the pictures of the main characters on the first page to identify them and learn a little fact about each of them, in the authentic voices from the TV series. (Who would have guessed that Shaggys real name is Norville "Shaggy" Rogers?) The music used throughout the story creates a suitably spooky ambience. To hear a short synopsis of each chapter, use the pen to touch the chapter heading. By touching the pictures throughout the story, you will hear some very amusing sound effects (the wobble noise and Velmas trademark exclamation of "Jinkies!" are particularly notable). The story contains 120 vocabulary words designed to be slightly more challenging (such as mystery, nowhere and skidded)--these are highlighted throughout the text and repeated in a glossary at the end of the book. Touch any of the glossary words and the recorded voice pronounces it correctly and offers a short definition. Comprehension and memory are tested in the Haunted Castle Challenge game, where youre asked questions about the story and use the pen to touch the picture of the appropriate answer. Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle is an entertaining if slightly predictable tale designed to build reading confidence. Importantly, it also encourages children to think about the meaning of words in context and tests understanding of plot and characters. --Alison Drury ... Read more Reviews (5)

Editorial Review This hard-plastic lunch box will definitely start some conversationsamong the lunch crowd. Made of durable plastic and molded to represent TheMystery Machine, this is one kitschy kit. A latch on the front of the van opensthe box lengthwise; inside kids will find a 10-ounce Thermos. The top of the van is half of the storage space, sowhen opening the lunch box, contents may come spilling out. The box isturquoise with stickers of the Scooby gang in the front windows, decals forwheels, and a bright orange handle for carrying. --Pam Lauer ... Read more Reviews (12)

Editorial Review Whether you think that a certain popular cartoon canine isadorable or annoying will likely define your receptiveness to theScooby-Doo! Where Are You? electronic game, a rather arbitrary tie-into the Cartoon Network show. Although rules for five games areprovided, they all center around hiding a plastic rendering of theScoob (powered by two AA batteries, not included) that emits a seriesof phrases ("Scooby-Dooby-Dooby-Doo, HeeeeHeeeHee" among them) every20 seconds or so. Other players then attempt to find him to winor, in another variation, gain a chip to place on a tic-tac-toe board. The 20-second time intervals are a tad problematic: it's long enough tomake for a challenging hunt in an apartment, but probably too lengthyfor the targeted 3-year-old's attention span. And here at the SPCA(Society of Plaything Critics at Amazon.com), we found a little touchof Scooby-Don't in the instructions: we waited and waited for the unitto activate when we flipped the switch. Nowhere does it say to presshis dog tag first. Scooby-Dooby-Doh! --Tony Mason ... Read more Reviews (2)
